I did not have any problem with watching them before, and after seeing your post I tried to watch them but couldn't. Looks like the SBS promo team screwed up the links while updating the site. If you click on each character, you will see the character description is moved up to the right link except for the one for Go Kwang Reol (Son Hyun Joo). Okay...the SBS team's working hard for the updates *handclaps*, but hope the videos are restored soon. ;)

fivemagic,

Thanks for clarifying the relationship. I can't wait to see how Jang Hyuk and Kim Min Joon interact together on the screen. ;)

Thanks o-cha for posting the photos of Kim Gap Soo as A-Gui, a key figure bringing tragedy and sorrow to our protagonists. The character descriptions lack the part of YoungMin's story, i.e., how he will meet Goni again after turning back from him. I am wondering if Young Min (Kim Min Joon) will be on the side of A-Gui. Then he must be struggling between friendship and professionalism (?). Since the character of Young Min is a new creation in the drama, all is up to the writer now. ;)

I really like the character of Young Min (Kim Min Joon).

When I translated your words in Italian, I was very impressed by that "mild eyes" referring to the eyes of Goni.

Young Min seems a man who is struggling to manage his indomitable character.

Yet, he seeks in a Goni something special...

Something that loses its certainties.

Wils and O-cha,

I am having the same problem too... maybe we can all check it out later in the week... they (SBS team) must be updating the site and gotten the links messed up.

Anyway, Wils, I was just assuming that Young Min will be friend with Goni at first and then later on in the episodes, YM will turn bad... I don't know that for a fact, but it was just my thoughts.

I just found some big changes in the character descriptions.

The updated descriptions show more detailed relationships between Goni, Nan Sook, and Young Min.

I will update the translation soon. ;)

BluOltremare,

Thanks for sharing your insightful thought about Goni and Young Min. ^_^ Glad to see Tazza is being translated in Italian. Thanks!

Fivemagic,

The new character descriptions clearly say they are destined to be against each other. phew.

wils : woohooo...that means I'll be checking back on this thread on your translation.

Wils and O-cha,

fivemagic : What I really want to see is how Young Min will change. He must've been torn inside when he realized that his uncle is his friend's nemesis. I guess this would be the case where blood is indeed thicker than water -- him probably choosing A-Gui over Goni. I don't even know if Yeoung Min will turn 'bad' necessarily...my thoughts is that he chose his uncle over his buddy....but to what extent? hmm...interesting

Besides the relationship between Goni-Young Min, another one that I am very interested in is Madam Jung-Nan Sook.

I just don't know Nan Sook can stay so patient under the tutelage of Madam Jung (A-Gui's lover) while on the inside she's probably boiling with anger over A-Gui.

Yet another relationship worth dissecting is Young Min-A Gui. How far can a nephew take an uncle's cruelty? Young Min seems like a nice enough guy so how far can the limit of his morality be stretched? I'd also be curious as to how A Gui treats Young Min.

Gosh...the characters are so 'juicy'.... I think we can have endless talks about them...and this even before the drama starts...hehehe.

I think that Young Min lose the compass of his morality when

killing the step father of Goni

.

On that occasion, inside him is a turning point.

The turning of evil.

but

A-Gui killed Goni's step father

.Which is what makes me even more intrigued since Young Min knew that

A-Gui caused the death of Dae Ho (Goni's step father)

yet YM 'chose' A Gui and shunned Goni. Like you said that might be the turning point in YM's life...maybe the point when he can accept

his uncle as the murderer of his friend's father

and be 'okay' with it...that's the point of no return.

Are you translating Tazza into Italian? How wonderful!

Thanks wils for the clarification on Goni and Young Min's rival! I should have looked at it carefully before posting my comment... thanks again.

Me too, I am hoping to see your translations.

O-cha - My thoughts exactly! I really want to see how he will change too... after finding out that is.

okay..so I just went back to Goni and Young Min's character description from page 17.

It says that

Young Min caused the death of Goni's parents..so maybe the death wasn't caused by A Gui then

.... but how? I guess we might find out more after wils post an updated translation...but in the meantime that means speculation time. I love speculating about drama storylines..hehehe

Let me know if this sounds absurd or if it makes sense:

Option #1 --

Young Min got into trouble. Dae Ho (Goni's stepdad) helped him out. Goni's parents' death was the result of them helping out Young Min. Young Min felt extremely guilty but instead of asking forgiveness from Goni, he ended up turning his back on Goni and feigning loyalty to A-Gui. By this time Young Min knows he's a scum of the earth so he might as well join the biggest scum of the earth that is A-Gui.

Option #2 --

Young Min brought Dae Ho to A-Gui. Maybe A-Gui tricked Yeong Min to bringing Dae Ho to him. In any case A-Gui had a hwatu match against Dae Ho and won. The winner gets to decide the fate of the loser. A Gui decided to take Dae Ho's life.

Option #3 --

Young Min needed to prove his loyalty to A-Gui by ruthlessly eliminating Dae Ho. Young Min may not directly kill Dae Ho but whatever he and his croonies did might be bad enough that Dae Ho slit his own wrist. Again extreme guilt turned him away from Goni.

Again..those are my speculations...would love to hear your thoughts.

Hey guys

An interesting discussion's going on. The point of no return may be set not only by Young Min, but also by Goni. According to the new description, Goni became to know A-Gui and Young Min stood behind all the misfortunes of his father, Daeho (in a new description he is just a friend of his father), and NanSook (Goni's love) and so decided to revenge. If Goni doesn't define Young Min as an enemy to fight against, there may still remain a chance for Young Min to revert. ;)

To be honest, I've wondered what message we could learn from this gamblers' story. I just read a very interesting review about the movie Tazza. It's a bit a criticism toward the movie. It criticizes the movie does not capture the deep meaning of the Manwha (first volume) despite its grand success in box office. The focus should not be placed on the success of gamblers for their wealth, rather than how to quit the gambler's life. Everyone in the story got into the gamblers' world because they lost something that they should not. To restore or revenge it, they engaged in the gambling world. The only way they could get out of the gambling world is either you lost your wrist (you may now know, 'cutting the wrist' has some symbolic meaning. ;) ) or you win over the opponent and leave the world on your own. Goni in the first volume of the manwha actually did it. But you know the nature of gambling: you never win all the time. You have to make a decision to leave, which is really hard and that's why people addicted to gambling can't leave the world until their death. I am curious how the writer will conclude the story at the end.

Back to the discussion, there may be no 'point of no return' in this regard. The drama is getting more and more intriguing through your discussion even though it hasn't started yet.

edit:

o-cha,

I enjoyed your speculations a lot and will vote for option 2. Even though there are some big changes in the storyline shown in the character descriptions, I bet your speculation still sounds plausible. ;)

wils : thanks for explaining about the wrist cutting. It makes sense to me now... at first I though cutting wrist means comitting suicide but now that may not be the case...so in the drama/manhwa wrist cutting could just mean giving up the gambling lifestyle..so the wrist cutting is really just a symbol. Is this right? I mean the loser who cut their wrist may or may not die?

But oh wow those are big changes..from Goni's step father to just a friend of his father. I wonder what the reason behind the change is.

With the latest revelation...it sounds like Young Min is more 'straight forward' bad rather than questionably bad. is that even a word questionably bad? Dang it I like morally gray Young Min better..hahahaha.

Love what you said about "Everyone in the story got into the gamblers' world because they lost something that they should not".

How true for all of them....

Goni ---the loss of his parents and Nan Sook (Mi Na)

Nan Sook (Mi Na) --- loss of her freedom, first love (Goni).

Young Min --- loss of a friend?? Goni??

Madam Jung --- I can't think of what she lost. Maybe her youth? her love? her self respect?

Hello guys,

I updated the character descriptions. As some of you may notice, there were some big changes in the storyline. The new writer may revise the synopsis a bit. I like the change: toward balancing between main characters. ;)

I put some spoiler device (yellow) in the descriptions as I find the descriptions often going too further.

Other supporting characters (people in House and in Jail) are pretty much the same. So I did not include them here.

****************************************************************************

Revised Character Descriptions:

Goni (played by Jang Hyuk)

"The real game starts from now, and I will throw my cards all my life in the name of revenge."

Goni, a light-and-warm-hearted soul, showed a natural talent for gambling from his childhood.

In his high school days, he tried to shun gambling since his father died because of it. After a short period of happiness in the reunion with his first love Nan Sook, he got into trouble when he joined the professional gambling games for the first time to prepare money for the surgery of his best friend Young Min's grandmother. He lost in the game and realized he can't go back to where he was.

Leaving home and wandering around, he met Pyung Kyung Jang who brought him to a new tazza's world, but soon became washed off by AGui. He ended up being in jail, falsely accused of murder, where he became to know AGui and Young Min were responsible for the death of his father and Dae Ho and the misfortune of NanSook. While his angelic smile turning into a cynical stare, he has become reborn for revenge. There will be no old Goni until he gets revenge. He defeated powerful tazzas from the nation in a queue, and finally comes to sit at the table opposite A-Gui. The real game starts from now, and I will throw my cards all my life in the name of revenge.

Nan Sook (played by Han Ye Seul)

"If I sell my flesh now, I will make no more than hundred thousand dollars.

But if I use it differently, I can make at least half million dollars."

There is a dull and shoddy counter table at a billiard hall. If she sits behind it, she can make it bright.

She is a girl with mysterious coldness and charm. She is the first love to Goni and Young Min.

When her brother happened to step in the hwatoo game that A-Gui planned, her life changed. He not only lost the building (probably his family owned), but also had Nan Sook be sold to Kye Dong Choon.

Liking Nan Sook at first sight, Madam Jung took her with a mind to raise her as a tazza. Nan Sook goes to school during the day, while at night, working and learning hwatoo games at the room-salon and house Madam Jung manages for business.

YoungMin's love to her, rough and clumsy, but genuine, is a luxury to a broken soul NanSook. But after meeting Goni again, she recovers her smile. Their dating, with each unaware of what the other is, continues until they encounter each other at the house. Goni is washed off there. NanSook later comes to know AGui and Young were behind her misfortune. The elaborate execution of her revenge starts in the name of Goni's and her loss of happiness.

Young Min (played by Kim Min Joon)

"No one knows when the game ‘Go’es or ‘Stop’s until it is really over."

His eyes are sharp, his feet noiseless, and his fists deliver powerful punches.

He has such a charisma that no one dares to come close to him.

Several gangs often targeted him for recruitment, but he never paid attention to them.

He did not want to give his grand mom any concern who raised him alone..

When he first saw Goni who was able to conquer him with such mild eyes, he became interested in Goni, with unexplainable bewilderment.

He thought he did not need more friends if he had Goni as a friend.

At the death of his beloved grandmother, he cried and cried, with his heart filled with rage against the cruelty of the world. He chose to be under Agui's wings to be a hardboiled gambler, a divergent path that leads him to being opposite Goni. Their destiny as rivals becomes clearer as YounMin takes Goni's love NanSook to the world of evils, the gambling world and causes the death of Daeho, the person whose being is like a father to Goni.

Madame Jung (played by Kang Sung Yeon)

"I will raise a baby tiger with her leg chained."

She looks in her late twenties, but is indeed 35 years old.

She shines in her sizzling glamorous beauty. Even the white teeth slightly shown between her red lipsticks look simply smashing.

She smells like a rose. No one sits with comfort oppsite her at the gambling table. Beauty is her fatal weapon. Through her life experiences, she does not trust men, but rather hates them. That's why she loves the gambling games where she can destroy men to her fullest.

Go Kwang Reol (played by Son Hyun Joo)

cast_3.gif

A braggart, talking nonsense and rubbish non-stop

He is so talkative to be often laughed at as playing a hwatoo game with his mouth. But he can't help it.

He is a sympathetic, softhearted, and warmhearted tazza.

He is the best friend and like a brother to Goni. Whenever Goni gets in trouble, he gives Goni a fundamental help, but at the same time it is he who often gets Goni into trouble. He always stays next to Goni, helping him defeat the AGui's party one by one.

A-Gui (played by Kim Kap Soo)

"Do you know who cut off this finger? It's him! I've never forgotten what this cut finger means at any single day for the last 20 years."

He is a legend of the tazza world, but at the same time a figure of extreme evil.

He is notorious for the eccentric habit that if he wins a game he cut off the opponent's wrist.

When people see him in person, they get appalled at the wicked ice he gives off.

He is a dandy in white traditional clothes with a cigar, but they can't hide his evil charisma.

He operates a big national chain of Houses with professional tazzas. He dares to buy the nation through gambling and the casino business plays a central role in his ambition.

Other Core Figures:

PyunG Kyung Jang (played by Lim Hyun Shik)

101_act005.jpg

The legendary gambling guru from whom A-Gui and DaeHo learned hwatoo. A-Gui and DaeHo are the second generation of legendary tazzas, while Pyun Gyung Jang and JjakGui are the first generation.

He left the gambling world and lived quietly when he had a conflict with his daughter about the death of his wife. He looks like a street philosopher who seems to master the truth of fortune. After seeing Goni's determination, he helped Goni grow up as the number one tazza of the nation.

Dae Ho(played by Lee Ki Yeol)

00000003714-t.jpg

A friend of Goni's father. He owns a small photo shop across Goni's restaurant.

He, an ordinary-looking guy, looks like none, but has a brilliant smile on him that makes him look generous to anything happening in the world. No one knows he hides sharp eyes behind that smile.

No one can imagine he was the guy nick-named ' chaffcutter of Mountain JeeRhee' a legendary gambler before he settled down here. When his best friend Goni's father died, he played a fateful game opposite AGui.

SoonIm (Goni's mother) (played by Park Soon Cheon)

p_00021092.gif

She who lived a peaceful everyday life, suddenly became a widow when her husband played hwatoo games in hopes of making some money out of cash shortage and died accidently. Her tragedy didn't end here. She also had to watch her son be troubled by being involved in gambling. Despite all tragedies, she, a warm-hearted mother, stays there all the time for her son.

Kye Dong Choon(played by Jang Won Young)

miniphoto45392.jpg

Second in power in A-Gui's party, nick-named as 'spindrier'

He is notorious for collecting gambling debts in wicked ways. His nickname comes from his evilness that he can extract water even out of squid jerky. One of his strengths is he encroaches on non-affiliated houses until they surrender.

Wearing colorful suits, a ring on each single finger and a scarf around the neck, he looks like a typical upstart. Come closer, you feel like you smell a disgusting industrial oil flavor from him and see his evil eyes. He doesn't feel comfortable with Young Min who just joined their team as a tazza chosen by AGui because he looks like a threat to his position, second in power. Besides, he comes to know Madame Jung, who he has a crush on, keeps her eyes on him. He attempts to slander YoungMin to kick him off of their team.

Kwang Cheol (played by Oh Jung Se)

miniphoto47853.jpg

NanSook's brother.

After being washed off, he deliberately set a fire to AGui's House, ending up being in jail. After being discharged from jail, he determined to revenge her sister NanSook's misfortune on AGui's party. But he again becomes the Achilles heel of her sister as he jumped into gambling again, leaving him in debt and thereby enslaved to AGui's party.

okay..so I just went back to Goni and Young Min's character description from page 17.

The third option is interesting.

I think Young Min is a free man in the mind as in his soul, but which, however, can not escape the power of A-Gui.

Young Min did not know the step father of Goni.

Perhaps, he simply had to punish him, according to the orders of A-Gui, but his fists kill Dae Ho and in this way, he changed his life.

A free man who knows perfectly the difference between good and evil, a man who knows himself and his character, a man who knows his own limitations sees his hands soiled with blood.

He is a murderess.

He has crossed a threshold that the first did not know.

First, he thought to be very different from A-Gui, but now that blood on his hands to his eyes show a very bitter truth.

However, his conscience is still vigilant and aware.

If the return of Goni pushes him to direct comparison, it means that his conscience wants to tackle the sense of guilt, then the responsibility of its faults.

The most interesting aspect of character Young Min could be precisely the path of his conscience that, at the beginning, progressing from good to evil, and then ends up pushing him to change, again, his life.

Then, Young Min is not an enemy, an evil which must be punished, but a man who chooses redemption.

Wils, thank you very much for new translations.

Your words are very valuable to understanding the characters.
