Episode 3

Prince Chung-nyeong sneaks out of the royal palace to see the real world and how people live daily. When he returns to the palace, he drums the Sin-mun-go requesting a face-to-face meeting with King Tae-jong, his father. Sin-mun-go is a drum which anyone can hit and request a meeting with the king.

“Sin-mun-go long lost its sound. The drum is covered with dust. Maybe that’s why the people call the king a tyrant.”

However, Chung-nyeong’s innocent motive is distorted and pushes the Royal Court into disarray.

“How dare a mere prince to scold the king? The blood of the prince can be shed on the palace ground.”

The young prince believed that, no matter how others view his actions, his father and mother will understand his true intentions. However, King Tae-jong and Queen Won-kyeong face him not as understanding parents but strict rulers.

“If you are such a weakling, how dare you to talk of the world and the state affairs?”

“He needs to learn how to lower himself and wait quietly. Then, I have to be harsher and stricter to him.”

Chung-nyeong has never before thought about death. It weighs heavily on the prince’s young heart.

“I should never think of the people every again, right? Or else, I will lose another.”

Ep. 3 & 4 - OH the drama is unfolding so nicely! What I like most - Prince Choon-Nyeong and his teacher/master, Prince Choon-Nyeong and his love for his servant *sobs*, Prince Choon-Nyeong with his eldest brother the crown prince..So far these 3 prong relationship has build up so well. I especially like his relationship with his eldest brother the crown prince, flashback pictures when they were little boys, the crown prince wanted to protect and take care of his brothers during times of trouble - what a great ko ko (hyung), big bro...

And the ending climax on Ep. 4 - so can't wait for Ep. 5 !

Kim Sang Kyung shi - bpali bpali come out! Ep. 6 ? Ep. 7? The young man acting as young King Sejong aka Prince Choon-Nyeong *claps* what a sweetheart he is!

I can even enjoy the palace politics and intrigues!

I can get the file from S2's clubbox but it is not listed on the site that they are subbing it.

I've been watching this drama since episode 5 from kbs world and I really hope the pd's and the writers do justice to King Sejong's story.

I'm curious on to how the story of the two older brothers of King Sejong would be played out as I've read in a lot of articles that prince Yangnyung and prince Hyoryung believed that Sejong was destined to be king and believed it was their duty to put him on the throne and it also said he was favored by the King because he excelled in various studies.

would the writers follow what is written in history or go through a different direction?

i just watched ep3 on KBS world. I found it to be really interesting. though im not too familiar with the history and all. right now, i sorta dislike the crowned prince yangnyeong, i find him conceited and a bit arogant in some ways when he grew up. he always got this smug look on his face. that i wanna smack him. lol. i mean before he was nice to his bros now its like he undermines them and stuff.

just curious, when will the crown prince become prince choongnyeong?

what is the roles of dayeon and jang young shil in the drama?

what's the whole deal with being the concubine's wife? i thought sometimes they even became succesors or a big part?

in some other saeguks. they didnt really delve that it was bad being the son of a concubine. not that i remember anyway.

hehehhe

ep_sejong.jpg

How far can a leader ask his people to sacrifice?

The crown prince returns victoriously. Prince Chung-neyong has mixed feelings to look at his older brother. However, the reality of Gangryeong Port is not as glorious as the victory.

“You must be bored to death to worry about the country and its people.”

Yun-hoe makes sarcastic remarks at Prince Chung-nyeong but tells him the miserable state of Gangryeong Port.

The government tax office in the area was already robbed, but no one would dare to belittle the crown prince’s military exploit. Thus, the tax officials covered up the truth and squeezed the residents to recover the damages.

People were weak. However, the troops hit mercilessly on them to collect more money. Prince Chung-nyeong is heartbroken and has to make hard efforts to restrain himself as he watched the troops trampled on the people, who were his heavy, earth and universe.

It’s all because of the crown prince. People have to suffer to make him look good.

The wrong must be corrected.

Prince Chung-nyeong returns to the palace.

He halts his steps when an old memory comes back.

As a non-crown prince, the price of his interest in politics was terrible. He remembers how his attendant Jang-won and his uncles were executed for his disloyal thoughts.

The prince is hesitant.

Will he report the leader’s mistake or protect his surroundings?

As a prince and as a man, he has to decide.

The English title of this thread should be changed from "King Sejong" to "Great King Sejong" or "Sejong the Great". Sejong is one of only two kings, the other being Gwanggaeto the Great, who are given such an honorary title in Korea.

Anyways, this drama gives a very interesting and dramatic twist to the historical events that occured.

Episode 11

“Diplomacy is like gambling. What you see is not all there is.”

At the royal banquet to welcome Ming’s envoy, Crown Prince Yang-nyeong burst in anger. Due to his actions, the diplomacy between Ming and Joseon is a precarious situation.

Ministers Hwang Hi and Sim On try their best to appease the Ming’s official but to no avail. What’s worse, the envoy acquires the records of Japan’s recent attacks and accuses Joseon of secretly communicating with Japan to conspire against Ming. Then, he demands Joseon to present ten thousand horses as a gift, dispatch one-hundred thousand troops and send the crown prince to Ming. The government of Joseon is in deep turmoil.

At the Ming envoy’s unreasonable demands, Crown Prince Yang-nyeong incites Confucian scholars to rally in front of the envoy’s quarters. However, Prince Chung-nyeong intervenes. He pleads his elder brother to apologize to the Ming’s envoy to prevent a war and save the people.

However, Crown Prince Yang-nyeong turns a deaf ear to his brother. He can only hear the loud cheers from the people.

Prince Chung-nyeong returns to his palace. Yun Hoe harshly scolds the prince that neither he or his brother is approaching the problem right.

I don't know if people know this already but Yang-Nyeung DOES NOT flirt with his uncle's mistress. That man is one of the last royal relations of the last Goryo king. 왕 was their last name but to avoid the eyes of the public, they added another stroke to change their surname to 옥 (Ok) which is why his last name is 옥 in the drama. Remember the scene when the people were on the ship and they died from the attack? They were the last of the Goryo royalty. 태조 (Taejo), the founder of Goryo, killed them. 태종 (Taejong) aka Sejong's father was/is also known for killing many people. In reality, 양녕 (Yang-Nyeung) gave up his title to his brother 새종. The Queen's second son (효롱? 호룡? Can't remember) becomes a monk. I'm guessing most of you knew this already, so sorry if this is repeated information.

ah. so it isnt true about Yang Nyeung firting with that woman --;; it was strange to me how can he do such things . but i must say he is a man who say and do what he thinks ..especially to uphold his beliefs .though sometimes too implusive .i guess his personality wont make him a suitable leader ..

oh i am really interested to see how they get out of the situation with the ming envoy . Prince Chung-nyeong advice to the king really works .

now i am on esp 12..

this should be from later esp ..isnt that the ming envoy ..

hi shirley ... glad to see you're still watching!!! i really like this drama ... the court politics are all intriguing to me. i'm no longer even watching because of kim sang-kyung. kekeke

King Se-jong's father, Yi Bang-won (later King Tae-jong), was the 4th son of the Chosun dynasty's founder King Tae-jo.

In 1398, Bang-won killed the then crown prince ‘Bang-seok’ (his youngest half-brother) and pushed his elder brother ‘Bang-gwa’ (later King Jeong-jong) to the throne. This coup is called "The first war of princes (1398)".

Bang-won's another elder brother 'Bang-gan' was discontented with his position, so he rebelled against Bang-won in 1400. As depicted in the drama (take a look at crown prince Yang-nyeong's memory in ep. 1), Bang-won successfully defeated his brother Bang-gan in “the second war of princes (1400)".

King Jeong-jong, knowing the acting king of the kingdom was his younger brother Bang-won, appointed him as a crown prince, and abdicated a few days later. The ex-king lived in comfort and luxury for the rest of his life.

Queen Won-gyeong and her brothers spared no effort to help Bang-won. They were kingmakers in reality and in name. After usurping the throne, however, Yi Bang-won (King Tae-jong) returned their kindness with ingratitude. He favored other concubines over the queen, and neglected her brothers intentionally to weaken their political power. It was natural that Min brothers threw their eyes upon the heir to the throne (Prince Yang-nyeong). King Tae-jong seemed to accept it as a threat to his kingship.

Her name is

Cho-gung-jang. She is a gisaeng girl favored by the abdicated king Jeong-jong (the current king's elder brother). That is, the crown prince can be blamed for flirting with his uncle's mistress.

The subs on KBS World says that he is abdicated King Jeong-jong ... so he is the king's elder brother?!!! The Ok people are the ones who pretended to help out Choon-nyeong ... the merchants. And one of the eunuch ... Il-chi or something ... the one who stole information & gave it to the Ming so they start suspecting Joseon is in cahoots with the Japanese. If I'm not wrong ... Choon-nyeong's teacher ... is also a Goryeon? Because I remember Hwang Hwe (?) ... Kim Gap Su's character said something about that when he confronted him about his treatment of his student~
