Lol. I'm so sorry about that. @Meliere and I have this inside joke thingy where she's the Neoul to my Jong Bong. It has nothing to do with the show. Lol. We just adored their bromance and wanted to base our bromance here on the thread on that. That's all. Sorry for the confusion. :P

  3. Dear friends,

I have a lot of doubts about this competitive streak that Taekie apparently has. Maybe you guys can help me with this. I know we are told that Taekie has a competitive streak, and in the latter episodes, that is emphasised by multiple repetitions by different people. He is compared to his apparently “competitive” father and the video arcade storyline with JB appears a clear example of his competitive nature. But can we take a step back to look at how he's been behaving all this while.

It goes without question that Taek takes his baduk seriously. But I'm not even sure if he likes to win. I have a terrible memory and my attention to detail is pathetic so please correct me if I've gathered an understanding that does not reflect what we are actually shown. Contrary to everybody saying that Taek is competitive in his sport, I find that he has a very troubled relationship with baduk and the competitive nature of the game. Rather than being joyous or ecstatic at every win, it appears as though his victories only succeed in bringing a drowning Taek to the surface. A sense of relief like he's come out of water and has finally managed to start breathing. In the first few episodes, we see Taekie less as a competitive guy than as someone who does not know how to cope with loss. There is something quite disturbing, pathological about his obsessive need to keep playing and keep winning. It's as if the inability to cope with loss extends beyond Taek's relationship with baduk, and that baduk is trying to fill a bigger void that existed before (I don't have definitive evidence but feel an urge to connect this with his mother's death).

If he was so competitive, as people call him, being a winner on most days, at least he could have come off as happier. His repeated questions to his friends about whether it's okay to lose also signals that baduk far from something done for the mere sake of competition. He's asking whether his friends, his social circle will still find it okay to love him minus his baduk skills and his status.

Again, the people in the show tell me certain things, and by now I'm cautious enough to not believe in them at first glance, especially if it is about Taekie. Competitiveness is something that helps them to understand how he manages to win these games. But what the show is showing me is that the game brings out Taekie's vulnerabilities more than anything else. He's just so frail, so fragile, so uncertain in the face of that loss, and needs to discover for himself an existence where losing is a reality, but one that does not leave him feeling defeated.

That Blue Marble scene was also taken as evidence of his competitiveness. But I saw it as evidence of his intelligence more than anything else. He read the instructions and the cards himself and figured out how to play the game on his own. The credit to his victory goes to that. And the way he figures out how one of the cards is missing was only showing how methodical his way of thinking is. So thorough that he was able to make out that a card was missing just by being ultra attentive. He won because he's smarter than everyone else, and played the game well, but the squad took it to be a sign of his competitiveness.

That's why that arcade scene with JB was refreshing. Because, goodness, he is being ultra competitive there. But look at the stakes, look at the importance of that game in the larger picture of his life. He's competitive only as far as something that is meaningless. More important things bring out more complicated associations, and I don't know if striving to win it all all the time is really Taekie's thing.

What leaves a sour feeling in my mouth is the way people constantly attach this competitive nature (which I doubt is present at all) to his pursuit of DS. I cannot make sense of that at all because he's never been competitive in his relationships. In a future post, I have pointed out how there were several opportunities for him to take that position as the unquestioned male lead, but he hasn't done that (I'll share that soon). He's gone about it in his own slow way, so I don't know why he'd suddenly step up his game and act out based on his acknowledgement of JH's feelings. I've never found that Taek's desire for DS is shaped in a way that would make him want to win her over, to possess her or own her in any way. So why this sudden expectation that he will get competitive and war-like? We've discussed here multiple times, how their's is a quaint romance, one that feels old and comfortable like worn out shoes, not dazzling and sexy, and Taekie's approach has never been aggressive. It cheapens the relationship to think of its ultimate success as a result of Taek's competitiveness.

I'm really thankful for @shooastrid's posts on baduk because they help illuminate Taek's motivations so well. For Taekie, baduk is not just a game, but a value system, and he has internalised this system to the extent that it reflects the gentle, non-aggressive, highly aware, deeply sensitive, immensely receptive, and pragmatically methodical way in which he approaches his relationships and interacts with people. Competitiveness doesn't feature high on the baduk value system. Patience does. As does humility.

But I'd love to hear your take on this so I can gain some perspective I may still be missing. So please help me out chingus!

LOL. Neoul-ah! You're a genius (pun! pun! pun!). But don't you get it? That would be the ultimate red herring cause we'd all be so focused on the colours we'd never look at the black and white. All this micro-analysing of non-existent clues has only served to dumb us, the audience, down. And we'd NEVER find out! Like not even after the show's ended. *moves to the stereo to raise the volume*

I do think regarding the chocolate that the fact TK has had a bag in his room this whole time is an interesting connection. In ep 2, they were also really really trying to fool us into focusing on SW and JH ( think about it, we just got this flashback of TK, what better way to undercut it than to bring back to focus to SW and JH (as TK obv has no bag with him which made him seem totally out of the game)

:bawling::bawling::bawling: LOL at the radish. Is the show going to opt for fluorescent kimchi and pastel rice just to save us from colour theorising the life out of this drama?

    4. The actor Park Bo Gum cries so much, even in scenes where he is not supposed to cry. So when he didn't cry during rehearsal, everyone looks surprised asking him, "Wow, you didn't cry today." And then Park Bo Gum replies, "I tried so hard to hold it in." Awww~~

That is soooooo adorable. Often it's the acting that you think makes a character shine, but I knew Taekie was made up of a lot more of Bogummie than just his acting chops. This boy's heart, heart, heart from head to toe. Oh dear me! My heart's melting and spilling all over the place. I love men who dare to cry when life/people/the world move them. If I had the skills, I'd make a MV with you all over it, but for now, this song's for you, Bogummie!

Your mention to me brought me to this thread. And just want to say thank you and I'm humbled by your praise. It took me a whole lot of time to watch certain scenes over and over again to justify my thoughts and put it into words. But in all honesty, this drama has been hard to put into words the moment things got serious with the main love line. I've done quite a few "compare and contrast" scenes between Jung Hwan and Taek these past few weeks, and the more I gather evidence, the more I become aware how just different Duk Seon acts with these boys. Yes, the grand gestures were swoon-worthy at first few scenes (that's how usually relationship starts, you think the guy is great and you're just head over heels for him). But what about what happens in your everyday life - the mundane things you do to get the relationship going? (Because sooner or later, it's the ordinary things you do everyday with your other half that will make spending forever with him worth it). And that's exactly how I interpreted Duk Seon is with Taek - their conversations and actions most of the time fit what couples in a long term relationship usually do (they can freely ask each other if there was something wrong, Taek: What do you want me to bring back to you from Japan?, Duk Seon openly suggesting what Taek can do - that it's totally okay to eat medium rare food, to lessen his take of meds, that it's okay to say no to people sometimes). Y'know little things like this - I live for moments like this - this is the kind of everyday life we live in. Little things like this that connect us with our other halves. I, for a while now, have been searching for scenes like this that connect Duk Seon and Jung Hwan. Sadly, the more I look for something, the more I wonder why I haven’t seen a scene where I discovered something new about them just from their everyday conversation. Jung Hwan can’t even naturally asked why she was crying – what caused her to cry in Ep 15. While he was having seconds thoughts whether to ask her or not, Taek had already asked her – as if it was a very natural thing for him to do. He didn’t need to think twice whether he should ask her or not. Duk Seon’s mundane conversations with Jung Hwan were mostly about something or someone else (They bragged about parents during the go-stop-game, Jung Bong and Min Ok’s date). I wanted them to talk about something that will make me learn new about their character – I learned Duk Seon ordered more than she ate in Ep 7, so that’s that – but... that’s it? They were even with her friends when they talked about that. Also, I noted that Taek and Duk Seon can plan things on their own without asking the rest of the group to come with them. This is the second time they planned to see a movie together with just the two of them. Jung Hwan and Duk Seon went to see two concerts by themselves only because the others couldn’t make it. Well, Jung Hwan and Duk Seon did plan to see a movie together, but we didn’t see that scene – we were only shown their backs discussing it with Duk Seon’s girlfriends spying on them. I’m still weighing whether I should consider that significant or not. Like I don’t know, I just wanted to have more substance in the scenes they are together – but I’m not just seeing it. I wanted them to do things that will make me connect to their relationship (I am in a relationship so I wanted to say: “Omg yes we do that too! OMG I do that too!” everytime I watch them together. But I noticed I’ve been doing that with Taek and Duk Seon’s scenes lately: I ask my bf too if he’s ever gonna eat or what because he is workaholic too, I tell him to dress warmer too cuz he does wear light clothes in the winter – I guess it’s a guy thing?).

Anyways I’ve written an essay again ~_~ Sorry guys. I’m just... really emotionally invested in this drama that’s why I wanted to understand each and every scene for the main love line. I wanted to have some sort of connections with the characters I fall in love with. And I love Duk Seon, Jung Hwan, and Taek so much because they feel so real to me and I feel the need to analyze each and every move they make - they don’t make. And my heart breaks every time they somehow disappoint me with their actions. That maybe one guy is stepping back and another is stepping forward because it’s really meant to be. That maybe one guy is just meant to love Duk Seon in the background, while the other one’s love is being reciprocated by Duk Seon. Whoever that guy is, I look forward to see him in the next four episodes. Either Jung Hwan’s arc has really ended at Ep 14 and Taek’s arc begins at Ep 17, or Jung Hwan’s arc continues on with a new and fresh limelight at Ep 17, we’ll see.^^

I forgot to mention the 4-episode gap between Sun Woo and Jung Hwan’s arc (Episodes 7-10). In my opinion, that arc was meant for us to discover more about the serious contenders as Duk Seon’s husband. It was somehow a break for us to get to know them more, how they interact with Duk Seon, and I guess for Duk Seon as well (to switch to a new interest).

@13infamyss! Both your posts (on the main thread and this one that I've quoted above) are so heartfelt and beautiful. I'm quite late in joining the party but I wanted to say, welcome to our thread! Please come curl under the pink blanket in Taekie's room. It's a little crowded here but there's always space for people like you who allow us to make so much more out of the show than what appears on the surface. And long essays are things we cherish the most. Ask anybody out here. I think fangirling over Taekie has infected us with a little bit of his patience as well. The reward is priceless. So no apologies for that, please. I haven't read on, but am looking forward to any more comments you may have posted below. :)

  8. Finally finished watching ep 15 & 16, and all I can say is - what's up with the squad undermining Taekie's ramyun making skills? You gotta let Taekie make the ramyun sometime! I mean he's always offering to do it but always gets pushed off.

    Screen_Shot_2016_01_02_at_11_27_47_am.jp

Says something about how everybody keeps underestimating him. You know, I bet he's probably better at making ramyun than anybody else in the whole of Ssangmundong. The show's been ace at turning all Taekie related setups and expectations on their heads and I'd love to see a ramyun scene with everybody beside themselves drooling cause Taekie's ramyun is so damn bashda. Followed by some bleating goats, of course. Don't know why I'm so bugged by Taekie being banned from the kitchen lol, maybe I'm just hungry.

Next time we gather in Taekie's room for a party, I don't want pizzas or bananas, but some namja ramyun made by Taek.

Taking a short break from work and wanted to share this with you as it struck me as interesting/mouthwateringly-delicious an idea depending on how delulu you want to get. Also I might forget if I don't post it right away. So here goes.

So this is what hubby dearest says at the end of ep 6:

    Screen_Shot_2015_12_29_at_8_43_59_pm.jpg

Doesn't it ring any bells, my friends? Wouldn't it be a fun thing to tease your wife by, say, if she had claimed 27 years ago to have known EVERYTHING about you, twice too, so confidently, but had been wrong all along? :D:D:D

I mean it's a small, small detail. But if writer-nim intended this to be deliberate, then it is subtle, clever foreshadowing and a thing to reh-lish!

Lol obviously pushing for Taekie's husbandhood and giddy beyond belief to find moar and moar affirmative clues along the way.

  13. Why do I feel like nothing much happened and we're stuck at the same place we were yesterday? Haven't watched but the recaps are leaving me feeling a dissatisfied. :(

And what is the irony? That the song I just called to say I love you is playing throughout the episode. But when Taekie actually calls, he gives her the opposite impression. And it's doubly ironic because he actually does love her?

Dunno. More than sinking, I feel like all ships are on standstill and still getting very little input from DS which is my greatest reason for frustration. No progress on her front, no realisation. Nothing. Nil.

    Saaaaad. :(

he's not a character who's known by his grand heroic gestures.

OMG. So many golden nuggets in your analysis. I wanted to point out how you're so right about the grand heroic gestures. And yet, it also seems like he does those grand heroic gestures. But he's saved them more so for friends and family - or even more accurately, for moments when the situation really calls for his help or intervention. He's got a spectrum of responses - from being nonchalant to being wholeheartedly available, but I think that depends on the situation. He's not transfixed on his beloved in a way that makes her the centre of his universe, and he has the perspective to see into the magnitude of the situation before responding. *more cheers for Taekie!*

And this in quite a funny way contradicts what he says about the nature of his attraction to DS. When he says I might die without her, in my head, I keep thinking, you'll be just fine, my boy. Your way of loving is so mature and tempered and slow and steady and stable that it cannot be uprooted or destabilise your life just because she's not around. She's very significant to you, yes, but you've also saved yourself for friends and family, and will put aside your tragedy (if it happens) to be there for others when they need it. *ruffles Taekie's hair*

Hi guys, finally the day has come for last episode before two looooooong weeks of wait. I spent my Xmas morning on my laptop, watching the show live and reading your Live Recaps, chuckling here and there like manic. You guys are so precious to me, full of insights and crazy goodness. Ahhh, :heart:my little heart can't contain this feelings alone:heart:, that's why I am lucky to have you all to share.

I discussed my current obsession with husband, complaining on how I will not have my dose of happiness after this week, and imagine after Ep 20, there will be no more AM 1988. He came with the solution that I should treat the remaining episodes like a prize, like watching one episode per year on my birthday, and that way, it will never end. Lol. Husbands are like that!

Anyway, it's interesting to see two things I love the most: Korean Drama + Baduk blended in the form of a heart-warming Kdrama. Usually baduk is only depicted in few scenes as additional props/ setting, but rarely adding to the depth of a character (See A Beautiful Mind, Aarang and the magistrate, etc) . In this drama however, Baduk is not only described as one layer in one of character's life but also holds the philosophical element of his character arc. I can't help but love the writer's ability to convey Taek's character into one that is most memorable from the drama for me.

There are couple of observations Baduk related to this drama:

    1. In Baduk, a match of unequal strength will be addressed in order to balance the power. A stronger player usually gives some amount of handicap to the weaker by letting them putting stones ahead. The number of stones are varied usually depends on the skill gap. For example, a 6 Dan player can give 5 stones to 1 Kyu level. Handicap system is unique and there is no equivalent for it in other games. The aim is to LET TWO PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT STRENGTH PLAY A GAME WITH EQUAL CHANCES TO WIN. The stronger one bears a burden not to show his superiority but to strain his powers and use all his skills. In short, he has to do his best to defeat his competitor. Handicap games are interesting and exciting for both partners. I can't give an example of a board game which the stronger player has to give so much in the beginning in order to win.

My interpretation: We all agree that the writer does not treat baduk as a mere additional prop/setting, seeing the amount of scenes about baduk and Taek's baduk portrayed in the series. I think she has a lot of knowledge about baduk and sometimes I think she's kinda fond of the game. Given the normal Kdrama trope which usually would introduce all main leads and their character structure/role in the plot as early as episode 1, I think Taek's gradual revelation is really unusual. He wasn't confirmed as the husband contender until episode 6, and he has been given very limited screen time in the beginning, and his arc is mainly apart but parallel with the rest of cast. Seeing how the episodes fold out now, I think he is serving the role of one with upper hand, the stronger one. That's why to give JH equal chance to play, the writer decides to give that first 6 episodes to build a solid base for JH + DS storyline. It's as if Taek the baduk master gives 6 stones handicap to his opponent, and only on the 7th stones, white starts his play.

    2. Modern baduk has two more distinguishing features: a compensation of points (komi) for the white player: for example in chess, white player wins more often whereas black employs defensive techniques from the beginning. However in Baduk, compensation implies a fight from the beginning WITHOUT A FEELING OF LESS CHANCES TO WIN. Another thing, the komi makes a draw impossible. In Baduk there ate no draw tactics and each game has to be decided so players try their d*mn3st best to achieve favorable result.

My interpretation: There is no clear depiction of secondary male lead character in this story. Why? It's because the writer gives them bot fair chance to play. As one with upper hand (Taek's back story, his baduk arc, his depth and selfless interaction with the gang and the people in Sssangmundong, as well as his mutual understanding with DS and his love for her), Taek is restrained with the handicaps (see above points) but at the same time receives Komi points in the form of his peeled character layers. They both have equal chance, to be the husband. But at the same time the amount of handicap is a burden which he must catch up to. In this case, I predict that true to his character as baduk master who is all about fair play, he will not fall for the trap of noble idiocy, but at the same time he will not jump out of character and be all malicious. I mean, he is our Taek who is observant and perceptive of people around him. The friends are like his family. I believe that the writer will find a middle way to let both players shine without sacrificing their characters.

    3. In baduk, a good and fair play is most important. It's better surrender than to play until the end, count on Opponent's big mistake. A game we won having played well is the source of satisfaction. A victory secured to violating ethics is worth nothing. A person learning to play Baduk starts to need NOT ONLY victories but also good play. Baduk creates that need and it is a cource of the need. Practicing Baduk induces not ideal human to behave ETHICALLY.

My interpretation: Again, as a master with great and deep understanding of Go, Taek will try to read and calculate his next move. I will not worry about the noble idiocy, but it's not impossible for a game to be won by handicapped player despite him being "weaker". So, it's up to DS now to decide. If I am not mistaken, Taek is unsure about her feelings. And maybe after this revelation, he will start looking for the sign of DS's attraction to JH? Who knows..

I have several more points, but I will probably post it later. Sorry for the ramble and nonsense.

    Merry Xmas!!!

Wow. Your analysis is so amazing it's making me speechless...

Maybe I like your post just a litttttttle bit more than the episode itself...

look at the dolls lol tumblr_nzy4p0pbqQ1qgrnp6o1_1280.png

Omo omo omo! Just finished watching ep 15 raw and guys guys guysssss!

    *puts on sleuth gloves*

Let me explain the trolling dolls scenario one more time. It appears from this angle like there are only two dolls. Green and yellow. Green standing, yellow sitting. But a few seconds earlier, and a few seconds later, we see the same scene but from another angle, where we get a better view of what's on the table behind JB. And guess what? There's a red doll on the table too! And it's being blocked by JB's body in this picture. It's quite far from the green and yellow dolls and is turned away from them. In fact, it's the exact replica of the alleyway scene at night when JH is about to approach DS but gets intercepted by Taek, and while the two of them talk and hug it out, JH turns away from them and enters his blue gate.

Do you see where I'm going with this? I'm usually cautious about sounding over-confident like this but this scene makes me 99.99% certain that the green doll is Taekie.

I think I'm about to whip up a tornado rolling around my room laughing!

I was lurking around the JH-DS thread and was shocked to find out that they're CONFIDENT that JH is green. Lol. Cause all week long we've pretty much established here that green in fact belongs to Taekie. lololol.

So even in ep 1, the first time these dolls do come up, there are three of them. The yellow to the left, the green to the right, and one whose colour can't be seen in the middle. But guess what they're doing? The yellow one looks happy and chirpy (just like DS), the green one has tears coming out of its eyes (just like Taekie) and the one in the middle looks super grumpy (who else could it be but JH?). All three dolls perfectly embody the three characters.

Lol to the chameleon bag. Such a prop is a trolling-team's greatest weapon. Although I do think it's a dark green bag with shades of blue. Looks green in sunlight and a little bluer in more dimly lit spaces. A symbol of DS's indecisiveness? Or fuel to our madness?

This colour theory is aimed at pushing shippers on both fronts to the heights of deluluness! We're all gonna come crashing down the first five minutes of ep 20. Somebody in Taekie's room had better prepare a first aid kit cause we're gonna need to bandage our butts come finale day.
