Descendants Of The Sun Writer To Bring Out New Fantasy Drama; Will History Repeat Itself?

Descendants Of The Sun writer Kim Eun Sook was the brain behind the story of the iconic show. He is already working on the next project which is expected to be a fantasy drama tentatively titled Goblin.

The new drama by Descendants Of The Sun writer is expected to be aired around December 2016. It is backed by network tvN. The lead pair in the series will be Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook.

Kim Eun Sook is also behind the story of drama Secret Garden. The new drama Goblinwill be very much different from his earlier projects. Goblin is a story of an immortal goblin who is looking for a human bride so that he can end his life. He ends up living with a grim reaper who is suffering from amnesia.

The story revolves around the encounter between the two and how the journey goes ahead. The ups and downs of this relationship will be explored in Goblin. Will the writer be able to weave a magic script yet again?

Descendants Of The Sun was a story of an soldier falling in love with a doctor. The couple grow closer to each other and blossom in their love in a crisis ridden state. The 16 episode drama series garnered immense popularity across the world. The lead Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Ko rocketed to fame and had crazy fan following for them.

Descendants Of The Sun broke records in terms of TV rating. The finale episode of the show reached 38.8 nationwide viewership rating in South Korea. According to statistics from Nielsen Korea, the episode was watched most among women in their 40s. The average rating for the entire series was 28.6%.

Meanwhile, Goblin is adding more to the cast. Latest update is that Yoo In Na is expected to join the cast, reported Soompi. If all goes through well, Yook Sungjae will be portraying the role Yoo Duk Hwa, which is that of a rebellious eldest grandson of a big corporate family.

Fans will have to wait and see if Goblin creates the same history as that of Descendants Of The Sun.

  2. Train To Busan is No. 1 at Singapore box office and top Korean movie to date

SINGAPORE  - South Korean movie Train To Busan is as resilient as the zombies it portrays - it has clawed its way up to the top of the local box office and also become the highest-grossing Korean movie in Singapore to date.

As of Wednesday (Aug 24), the film, which is still showing in cinemas, has made $3.1 million at the box office. That is more than triple the earnings of the next best performing Korean movie here - in 2007, romantic dramedy 200 Pounds Beauty (2006) had made $980,000.

Last weekend, Train To Busan also knocked Hollywood superhero blockbuster Suicide Squad off the box-office charts to reach the No. 1 spot - which is quite a feat given that the zombie flick was already in its third week of its release.

Starring Gong Yoo (Coffee Prince, 2007) as a workaholic fund manager who travels with his daughter by train from Seoul to Busan on her birthday, their journey soon descends into chaos when there is an outbreak of a virus that turns the passengers into crazed zombies.

Public relations specialist Fu Shuhui, 32, enjoyed the film so much she watched it twice in the cinemas.

She says: "I think this is the best zombie movie since 28 Days Later (2002), because this wasn't just a thriller - it was an action-packed emotional ride. The pacing was relentless but there was still time for character development too."

Train To Busan is distributed by Clover Films and Golden Village.

Ms Song Ting, distribution and marketing manager at Golden Village Pictures, believes Singapore movie-goers were captivated by its breathlessly thrilling sequences, much like how they tend to be excited by "other horror films".

She says: "There is also a touching human story here, and along with well-executed action sequences and high production values, all of these factors add up to the film's winning formula."

Traditionally, South Korean films do not fare particularly well in Singapore, despite the popularity here of the country's pop music and television shows.

According to industry insiders, it has been a challenge in recent years for Korean films to even break the $200,000 mark at the local box office.

In comparison, the list of top Asian titles in Singapore - besides local films - are dominated by Hong Kong and China co-productions.

The top three highest-grossing non-Singaporean Asian films here are gongfu movie Ip Man 3 (2015), which made $7.65 million; Jackie Chan actioner CZ12 (2012, $5 million); and Ip Man 2 (2010, $4.66 million).

Ms Song speculates that there are several reasons behind the poor performance of Korean films: "There is an increase in movie varieties at the cinemas. Some Korean films are also released much later here than when they first open in Korea, so people access them online."

Train To Busan had also set records when it opened in its native South Korea back in July, recording the highest single-day gross of US$9.64 million (S$13 million) from 1.28 million admissions.

  3. i 've faith in this drama for many reasons

First it's 3 lead actors who can act ( Gong yoo Lee dong Wook and Kim Go eun) it's rare nowadays

Second this story is new , unusual so it'll be add to this drama although fantasy drama can be big hit or big mess

third it'll be air on tvn honestly i trust tvn and all cable channels than public channels which depend on popularity only

forth the writer is KES i don't like her recent dramas but i can't deny she has the ability to attract fans and make any drama so popular

so please stop worrying and support them :blush:

That's weird... From latest news neither Nana nor Nara will play in Goblin. They have script reading next week, but they're still in process of casting for one of leading role.

I'm a bit worried for "Goblin". And I wonder how KGE's dating news will affect drama.

look i don't think KGE dating news 'll affect this drama , the only one thing that 'll affect is writing, story line and acting as i said before all of 3 leads acting is so good so i don't worry

i will support Gong Yoo in any day and in anything but not in this time and not in this s**t

sorry but this drama his end for me Before its start i hope this drama will be big Failure so he Learns some lessons

if you really love him you 'll support him in every project , and you don't like this project because of writer or story or only Kim Go Eun

and to be honest i trust gong yoo choices in movies more than drama but since i'm his core fan i'll always support him :)
