“I went back with some red ginseng and other Korean foods, but some of them said it didn’t agree with them. So now all my gifts are Korean cosmetics.” Chinese tourist Yang Shuai, 30, was shopping at a duty-free shop in central Seoul on Oct. 14. “This is my third visit to South Korea,” Yang explained. “At first, I came for tourism, but since then I’ve come for the shopping.” Yang Bin, also 30, was visiting a nearby department store. “I took some extra time to stop in here and buy some South Korean cosmetics my friends had been asking for,” Yang said. Also standing out from the crowd at the duty-free shops and department stores were the numerous male tourists from China watching shopping bags - sometimes as many as ten - while their female travel partners bought cosmetics. The term “youke” (Chinese for “tourist”) has been adopted to refer to these Chinese travelers, and the first thing many South Koreans associate with them is “shopping” or “cosmetics.” In surveys by Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), perfumes and cosmetics have consistently held the number one spot among the top ten products bought by Chinese visitors to South Korea between 2008 and 2013. Youke demand is as strong as ever this year. The number of Chinese visitors to South Korea first topped one million in 2010, when 1.01 million were counted. Last year, the number was up to 3.14 million. This year, another 3.16 million visitors were counted through August alone - a 50% increase from 2013. If the trend keeps up, estimates put the total totally for 2014 at around 4.69 million. The increasing numbers have also brought new patterns in youke activity. It was Lotte Department Store in central Seoul on Oct. 14, and a Chinese man in his twenties was lingering at Young Plaza’s Line Friends store, which sells character products for online messaging “lines.” After spending some time looking at the products, he picked out a few sheets of character stickers and assorted notebooks showing different character images. He then headed over to the design store 1300K, where he bought two bars of French soap at 12,000 won (US$11.30) apiece, along with two name card wallets made by a South Korean designer accessory company. “In the past, our Chinese customers were mostly rich, but lately it’s expanded to include a more general public,” said a sales employee at Shinsegae Department Store. Seo Yeon-chung, who heads up the China team at KTO, said past Chinese tourists tended to come in groups from relatively nearby places like Beijing and Shanghai. “The trend’s now changing, and there’s more individual tourism from those regions, while more and more group visitors are coming from the western mainland,” Seo explained. If the main Chinese visitors of the past were group tour participants from nearby cities, today a much wider range of tourists are visiting, in groups or on their own: teenagers drawn by the Korean Wave, visitors in their 50s and 60s attracted to the natural beauty of the Jeju landscape, and twenty- and thirtysomethings come mainly for the shopping. One of the biggest changes in the age distribution of Chinese visitors processed by immigration is the large jump in the percentage aged 20 and under - from 6.1% to 2010 to 11.0% as of August. “We get a lot of questions about the Korean Wave,” said a Mandarin interpreter at the main Lotte Department Store building, referring to the burgeoning popularity of South Korean popular culture in other countries. “Some people come up to us with a leaflet showing actor Kim Soo-hyun on it and demanding to know what brand it is. There are also a lot of questions about where to find Star Avenue, which has a lot of electronic displays for Korean Wave stars.” In another sign of diversifying youke trends, the percentage of seniors aged 60 or over processed by immigration rose from 6.1% four years ago to 8.4% as of August this year. Youke shopping patterns are changing as well. Sales figures posted by retailers this year for Chinese tourists show that the scope is broadening from well-known foreign brands such as Gucci and Chanel, cosmetics, and women’s formal attire to mid- and low-range cosmetics and fashion products. Until 2012, foreign luxury brands such as Gucci, Chanel, Prada, and MCM always occupied two or three spots of the top ten purchases made with Union Pay (a Chinese credit card brand) at Lotte Department Store. But during the first eight months of 2014, MCM was the only one of these brands in the top ten, holding out at number two. In their place, Stylenanda, a South Korean budget casual clothing brand that shot up to number two in number of sales last year, rose to the top position, while Too Cool for School, a low-priced cosmetics brand seized the number three spot. The influence of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, brought SM Town, which sells products related to celebrities with SM Entertainment, to sixth place, two ranks higher than the previous year. Line Friends, a store selling character products, also made a strong showing, debuting in the top ten list this year at seventh place. As the range of purchases expands, the average revenue per Chinese tourist at this department store has fallen from 1 million won in 2012 to 900,000 won in 2013 to 650,000 won in 2014. In a survey of 300 or so Chinese tourists carried out in the first quarter of this year by the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, the category of item that the greatest percentage of respondents said they had purchased during their visit to Korea was perfume and cosmetics, the same as the first quarter of the previous year. At the same time, this percentage fell from 82.5% to 75.4% over the same period. One noticeable change was the percentage of jewelry and accessories, which fell from 12.2% (fifth place) in 2013 to 5.3% (tenth place) in 2014. In contrast, the percentage of respondents who said that they purchased food products increased from 41.6% to 47.7%, and alcohol purchases entered the top ten for the first time at 6.2%. Survey results indicate that per capita expenditures also declined from US$1,885.50 in the first quarter of 2013 to US$1,738.40 this year. To be sure, expenditures by individual tourists visiting the Gangnam district of Seoul are on the rise. Per capita purchases made on Union Pay at the Apgujeong and Trade Center branches of Hyundai Department Store rose from 960,000 won in 2010 to 1.22 million won in 2012 and then to 1.26 million won in 2014 (January to September). Famous overseas brands such as Hermes and Cartier continue to hold most of the top ten spots in terms of revenue. But even at these branches of Hyundai Department Store, food purchases rose to eighth place in revenue. “Revenue in food products has increased since individual tourists are coming who know more about Korea,” said a source at Hyundai Department Store. “The surge in youke demand will last for about three years,” said Lee Hong-gyun, president of Lotte Duty Free Store, where Chinese purchases account for 60% of total revenue. Lee explains that large duty free stores are starting to set up inside China, while there are increasing efforts by Alibaba and other Chinese online businesses to buy up stock from South Korean brands and sell them in the domestic market. Lotte Duty Free Store, which sells “everything but cars,” is diversifying its product line, bringing in baby products such as diapers and formula while keeping South Korean smaller fashion brands in stock.

said: I miss KSH very much.

The other day while I was lurking in this thread. My husband saw me looking at his photos. He commented that KSH looks girly (My husband is not into K-drama or K-Pop. I am also not into K-drama until August this year). I was quite angry with my husband for his comment and I give him a stabbing stare for that comment on my love. since I watch KSH dramas and movie, He is very manly to me. Then I think he may think that he is so handsome that he look like a girl. Yes. KSH is a manly flower boy. I have never thought him as a flower boy but I see him as a real actor.
