    3년만에 뮤지컬로 돌아온 '납뜩이'

    조정석 영화 외도 끝내고 컴백… ‘블러드…’서 색깔있는 연기

      뮤지컬 '블러드 브라더스', 3년 만에 뮤지컬로 돌아온 배우 조정석의 '금의환향' 작이다. '헤드윅'에서 피부가 너무 뽀얗고 예뻐 '뽀드윅'이라 불린 그가 2012년 영화 '건축학 개론'의 감초 '납뜩이'로 이름을 알렸을 때 뮤지컬 팬들은 알게 모르게 냉가슴을 앓았다. 영화에서 뜬 그를 한동안 무대에서 보기 어려울 것이라는 우려 때문이었다.

      조정석은 올 상반기부터 내년 상반기 무대에 오르는 대부분 뮤지컬의 제작사들로부터 러브콜을 받았다는 후문. 하지만 '의리'가 대세인 요즘, 그의 선택은 자신을 주역으로 만들어준 '헤드윅'의 스태프(쇼노트·창작컴퍼니다)가 제작한 '블러드 브라더스'의 미키였다.

      드라마, 영화 등 장르를 넘나들며 다양한 연기를 보여주고 있는 배우 조정석(오른쪽)이 3년 만에 뮤지컬 복귀작으로 선택한 '블러드 브라더스'. 창작컴퍼니다 제공

      ' 블러드…'는 뮤지컬보다 연극에 가깝다는 인상을 준다. 150분의 러닝타임 동안 16곡의 노래가 등장하지만, 노래 길이가 대부분 짧다. 인상적인 것은 배우들의 연기력이다. 러닝타임 동안 7세 어린이, 청소년, 20∼30대 성인 연기를 다채롭게 선보이는 미키 조정석과 에디 장승조의 연기가 능청스럽다. 1인 다역을 맡은 문종원도 작품의 흐름을 잘 이어가며 감초 역할을 톡톡히 해낸다.

      관 객들은 다시 돌아온 뮤지컬 스타 조정석의 연기에 가장 큰 반응을 보였다. 34세의 나이에 7세 연기가 어려웠을 법도 한데, 망아지처럼 무대를 뛰어다니며 어리광을 부리는 모습이 자연스러웠다. 청소년기로 접어들어 교복을 입고 등장한 모습에 관객은 마치 이모가 어린 조카를 보는 양 반겼다. 어리광을 피우다가도 노래를 부를 때에는 힘 있는 창법으로 객석을 사로잡았다. 존스턴 부인 역을 맡은 배우 구원영의 연기도 맛깔난다. 억척스러운 8남매 엄마의 모습을 보이다가도 가난 때문에 쌍둥이 아들 에디를 입양 보낸 슬픈 모성애의 감정선을 자연스럽게 연기한다. 슬픈 듯하지만 왠지 '캔디'처럼 일어서는 모습에서 관객은 응원의 박수를 보내게 된다.

      아 쉬운 점은 결정적으로 이렇다 할 '한 방'이 없다는 것이다. 극의 초반부 10분가량은 다소 지루한 전개를 이어간다. 극이 결말로 치달을수록 점점 힘이 부친다. 성급한 마무리와 커튼콜 후 공연장을 빠져나왔을 때 딱히 입에 맴도는 멜로디가 없다는 점도 아쉬웠다. 공연은 9월 14일까지 서울 종로구 대학로 홍익대 대학로 아트센터. 5만5000∼11만 원. 1544-1555

    [마이데일리 = 허설희 기자] 뮤지컬 '블러드 브라더스'로 돌아온 뮤지컬배우 조정석의 귀환이 반갑다.

    뮤지컬배우들의 스크린 및 브라운관 활약이 활발해진 가운데 그 선봉에는 조정석이 있다. 조정석은 지난 2004년 뮤지컬 '호두까기 인형'으로 데뷔해 다수의 작품에서 활약하며 인기를 모았다.

    그 는 '남자넌센스 A-Men!', '그리스', ' 벽을 뚫는 남자', '찰리브라운', '바람의 나라', '헤드윅', '올슉업', '내 마음의 풍금', '스프링 어웨이크닝', '트루웨스트' 등에 출연하며 남다른 연기력과 가창력은 물론 특유의 끼를 발산하며 뮤지컬계 스타로 떠올랐다.

    그런 그가 본격적으로 브라운관 및 스크린을 통해 얼굴을 알린 것은 지난 2011년. 뮤지컬 '헤드윅'을 마지막으로 무대를 잠시 떠난 그는 드라마 '왓츠업'으로 브라운관 문을 두드렸고, 영화 '건축학개론' 속 납뜩이 역을 통해 기대주로 떠올랐다. 이어 드라마 '더킹 투하츠'에서 은시경 역을 연기하며 그야말로 대박을 터뜨려 이후 드라마와 영화에서 활발하게 활동했다.

    그렇게 조정석은 공연계 뿐만 아니라 브라운관 및 스크린에서의 입지를 차근차근 다져갔다. '반짝 스타'가 아닌 진정한 '대세', 공연 뿐만 아니라 어느 매체를 통해서든 믿고 볼 수 있는 진짜 배우가 된 것이다. 그렇게 되기까지 3년. 자신의 고향인 무대에는 오르지 못했지만 그 이상의 수확을 얻게 됐다.

    그런 그가 3년간 떠났던 무대로 돌아온다고 했을 때 많은 이들이 열광했다. 기존의 공연 팬들은 무대 위 그를 다시 볼 수 있음에 환호했고, 공연 외의 활동을 통해 조정석을 알게 된 이들은 조정석이 왜 공연계 스타가 됐는지 확인할 수 있는 기회에 설렜다.

    이는 조정석 역시 마찬가지. 조정석은 "다시 와서 공연한다는 것이 축복에 가까운 행복한 일이다. 첫 공연날 너무 행복했고 설레고 기대했던 마음 그대로 공연을 할 수 있었다"고 밝혔다.

    3년만에 무대로 돌아온 조정석이 택한 작품은 뮤지컬 '블러드 브라더스'. 뮤지컬 '블러드 브라더스'는 1960년대 영국 공업도시 리버풀을 배경으로 어렸을때 헤어진 두 쌍둥이가 우연치 않게 만나 우정을 싹틔워 가며 벌어지는 비극적인 운명의 이야기를 강렬한 노래로 담아내는 작품이다.

    1983년 영국 웨스트엔드 초연 이후 24년간 10,000회 이상의 공연을 했고, 1983년 웨스트엔드 올리비에상 최우수 뉴 뮤지컬상, 여우주연상, 1988년 웨스트엔드 올리비에상 남우주연상을 수상하며 작품성과 흥행성을 동시에 인정받은 명작이다. 한국 배우들 또한 누구나 탐내는 작품 중 하나다.

    좋 은 작품에 좋은 배우가 출연하니 호평은 당연하다. 조정석 뿐만 아니라 송창의, 오종혁, 장승조가 극중 배역에 푹 빠져 다양한 연기를 선보이고 있다. 또 진아라, 구원영, 문종원, 김기, 배준성과 같은 굵직한 배우들과 최유하, 심재현 등 젊은 배우들의 통통 튀는 연기 역시 '블러드 브라더스'의 완성도를 높이고 있다.

    특히 무대 위 조정석의 모습은 명불허전이다. 비극적인 운명의 쌍둥이 형제 중 자유분방하고 순수한 미키 역을 맡은 그는 7살부터 성인까지 20여 년의 세월을 연기하며 폭 넓은 인물 소화력을 자랑한다. 특수분장 없이 오직 연기력으로 그 나이대의 인물을 표현하기에 그의 연기력이 더욱 돋보이고 있다.

    무대 위 7살 미키가 된 조정석은 등장부터 남다르다. 귀여우면서도 어딘가 어설픈, 어린 아이들의 몸짓을 그대로 따라하는 것은 물론 대사 하나 하나가 30대 조정석을 잊게 한다. 10대의 미키는 누구보다 자유롭고 거침 없다. 그럼에도 좋아하는 여자 앞에서는 한없이 수줍어 하는 모습이 사춘기 청소년의 귀여움을 전한다.

    그렇게 성장하는 과정을 그린 다음 20대의 미키로 분한 조정석의 연기는 그야말로 몰아치기 시작하다. 쌍둥이지만 이를 모른 채 친구로 지낸 에디와의 관계가 변하는 것도 이 때다. 세상에 치이고 온전한 자신이 아닌 세상에 놓여진 자신을 보기 시작할 때부터 그의 감정은 요동치고 비극은 시작된다. 에디 역 오종혁, 장승조와의 호흡도 극이 진행될수록 더욱 깊어지기 시작한다.

    조정석을 비롯 송창의, 오종혁, 장승조는 7살부터 20대의 모습을 물 흐르듯 표현한다. 비극을 향해 달려가기에 끝까지 웃을 수만은 없지만 적절한 완급 조절로 관객들을 쥐었다 폈다 한다. 여기에 극 초반 가벼운 터치조차도 극 후반 인물들의 엇갈린 운명을 더욱 부각시키고 각 인물들의 행동에 타당성을 부여하니 비극으로 향하는 과정이 관객들을 울린다.

    뮤 지컬 '블러드 브라더스'는 좋은 이야기와 메시지, 좋은 배우들의 합이 돋보이는 작품 중 하나다. 특히 3년만에 무대로 돌아온 조정석의 에너지가 좋은 작품과 좋은 동료배우들을 만나면서 한층 배가 돼 관객들에게 돌아오니 그 귀환이 반가울 수밖에 없다.

    한편 뮤지컬 '블러드 브라더스'는 오는 9월 14일까지 서울 종로구 홍익대 대학로 아트센터 대극장에서 공연된다.

    나 새기의 첫공이자 막공이었던 이번 공연.

    벌써부터 기억이 휘발되기 시작하지만 어디 한번 기억나는대로 써보겠음. 거의 스토리 세세한 부분까지 기억나는 거 다 쓸거니까 대왕스포 밟기 싫은 뀨는 뒤로가기를 눌러주길 바라. 그리고 나 글 못쓴다.ㅋㅋㅋ 난독주의

     

    첫 부분에 큰 나무가 중앙에 자리 잡고 조명이 그것을 비추면서 공연이 시작되는데, 처음부터 이러한 연출이 참 인상깊었음.

    후기를 많이 봤다면 알겠지만 미키와 에디가 총에 맞아 쓰러진 후 존스턴 부인이 그들을 보는 장면, 그것의 회상으로 이야기가 전개돼.

    나 역시 후기를 많이 본 후 공연을 보러 갔기 때문에 예전부터 이러한 이야기 방식이 참 맘에 들었어.

    다른 후기를 보면 나래이터가 극 중에 개입하는 것이 공연에 몰입을 방해한다는 것도 봤는데, 나는 그런거는 별로 못 느꼈고.

    존스턴 부인이 많은 아이들을 기르면서 겪는 재정난, 결국 라이온즈 부인에게 에디를 보낸 것도 이것이 원인이 되지.

    쌍 둥이가 태어나기 전, 한 아이를 자신이 기르고 존스턴 부인이 매일 집에 와서 일을 도우며 아기를 볼 수 있게 해주겠다고 맹세한 라이온즈 부인은 아이가 태어나자 말을 바꾸고 존스턴 부인을 해고하는데 이 부분에서 라이온즈 부인이 이기적인 인물이라는 것.. 더 깊이 들어가서 참 .. 인간은 한없이 이기적이구나.. 라는 생각도 들었고.

    후년에 미키가 7살, 거진 8살이라고 주장하며 관객들에게 무한 잔망을 떨 만한 나이가 됐어.

    첫 등장, 말을 타는 시늉을 한 뒤 문을 쾅쾅 두드리면서 "엄마아~! 진짜 문 안 열꺼야아~?" 하는 씹덕 목소리를 내는데.. 이 때부터 진지하게 작품을 감상하던 나 덧쿠의 눈알은 미키만 쫄래쫄래 따라다녔다는 후문.

    (아 그리고 7세 목소리 낼 때 "엄마~" 하는 거 진짜 7살 아기 목소리.. 엄마한테 칭얼대는 목소리랑 존똑.. 졸귀ㅠㅠ)

    엄마한테 공원 근처에서 논다니까, 엄마가 불같이 화내면서 좁은 공간을 가리키며 저기서만 놀으라고 하니까 엄마 말씀 잘 듣는 미키는 그곳에 눕더니, 침을 캭 뱉는데 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 무슨 분수인 줄 알았다.

    또 일어나서 침 모은 후에 왼쪽 오피석에다 대고 '베~' 하는데 오피석이 참 부러웠다고 한다..

    그러다 에디가 미키에게 인사를 하고, 운명적인 그들의 첫만남은 후년의 비극의 발단이 된다.

    의형제를 맺는다며 자신의 손에 칼을 댈때는 얼굴 있는대로 구기면서 살짝 베고, 에디에겐 거침없이 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 아주 예전부터 알고 있던 것이지만 웃음을 참을 수가 없더라 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 관객들 호응도 너무 좋고.

    인디언 부분에서 손가락 꼰 채로 죽기 싫다며 히잉 대는데 정말 7살인 줄 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 씹덕..

    린다가 죽으면 쌍둥이 형도 볼 수 있고 학교도 안가도 된다고 하니까 씨익 웃는데 졸뀤ㅋㅋㅋ

    미키가 에디네 집에 놀러가서 쇼파에서 방방 뛰고 에디가 그걸 따라서 하는데 따라하는 건 장에디가 처음이라며? 첫공이라 비교불가능..

    기억나는 것만 열거해서 쓰는데 다 이미 너희들이 알고 있는 사실이구나 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    계속해서 미키와 어울리는 에디가 불안한 라이온즈 부인은 이사를 결심하고 에디 없이 심심한 일요일 오후를 보내는 미키.

    (애기 목소리에서 노래를 부르는데 갑자기 세옥이 목소리가 튀어나오더라 ㅋㅋㅋ 노래 부를 때 목소리 존멋.)

    얼마 있지 않아 존스턴 부인도 이사를 가게 된다. '새로운 오늘~' 이 넘버를 부르며 1막이 종료.

    푸통푸통. 2막이 시작되고 교복 미키가 나옴.

    난 자첫이라 그런가 존멋 존잘이고 (사실 조금 빵떡이긴 했지만) 춤도 박력있게 다리찢기까지 하고 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 머리 가르마 타서 옆으로 넘긴 것도 존잘.

    고로 교복미키존잘이었음

    미키 14살 됐다고 아기 목소리를 여느 청소년 껄렁대는 목소리로 갈아꼈는데, 엄마한테 츤츤거리면서 린다한테 가는데 그 목소리가 어찌나 존잘인지 ((((((목소리 덧쿠))))))

    버스타고 학교 가서 뒷자리에 엎드려 잠자는 미키를 앞 배우가 가리더라.. 잠깐 자리 얘기를 하자면 9열 끝자리라 시방없이 전체적으로 잘 보였는데 그 부분이 안보여서 답답했음.

    근데 그 부분 보이는 자리가 있긴 하냐? 그 부분 자체가 앞 배우가 가릴 수 밖에 없는 것처럼 보임.

    그리고 중간에 교실에서 '딤섬' 그 부분 왜 자세히 기억 안나냐 ㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 웃겼음. 선생님이 나오라니까 후다닥 뛰어나와서 선생님 매 피하고... ... 참 내 장한 기억력..

    린다와 미키가 청청패션으로 데이트 아닌 데이트를 할 때 린다에게 감정표현을 못하는 미키가 답답하면서도 귀여웠음.

    린다가 가버리니까 "가! 가! 가!..지마!" 하는데 존웃ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    "나도 린다랑 키스하고 싶어, 자고 싶어!" 였나? 암튼 이 대사가 표현 못하는 미키의 마음을 대변해 주는데 참 불타는 청소년이구나 라는 생각이 듦ㅋㅋ

    미키는 14살이 된 에디와 재회하게 되고 다리와 다리 사이 영화를 보러 가는데 그 찰나의 순간에서 에디가 자기 돈 많다며 돈 빌려주겠다고 할 때도 엄마한테 달라고 할거라며 집으로 쪼르르 달려가는게 참.. 애달프면서도..

    그리고 엄마가 화를 내자 에디와 도망치며 "몰라 엄마 존나 짜증나" 하는 대사도 씹덕.. (((목소리덧쿠)))

    영화를 본 후 마주친 린다와 쌍둥이들은 19살이 될때까지 셋이 붙어 다니며 우정을 키움.

    근데 이 답답한 미키. 얘는 19살이 될 때까지 린다에게 고백을 못해. 고백을 부추긴 에디 덕분에 둘은 사귀게 되는데, 그 순간에 키스를 ..

    쪽 소리가 아주 컸어 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 관객들 반응도 대박이었음.

    이 부분에서 에디는 자신도 린다를 좋아하지만 친구 미키를 많이 위해주는 좋은 친구인 줄만 알았지.

    에디가 대학을 간 사이에 임신을 덜컥 결혼을 덜컥 미키 해고가 덜컥.

    미키는 일자리를 계속해서 찾아다니지만 쉽지 않고, 세미 형아의 손에 이끌려 좋지 않은 일을 결정하게 돼.

    경찰에게 걸려 결국 징역 7년형을 선고받은 미키.

    옷이 벗겨져 반팔만 남은 채로 공허한 표정을 짓는데, 이 부분 연기가bb

    만성 우울증에 시달리며 석방되고 나서도 약에 의존해 사는 미키가 걱정스러운 린다는 약을 끊게 하려 해.

    린 다가 "약이 들어 있는 너의 몸은 너가 아닌 것 같아. 그래서 싫어." 하는데 미키는 "약을 먹어야 내가 사라져. 내 자신을 잊고 싶어." 하는데.. 정말 내가 울컥 하더라.. 자신을 잊고 싶다는 대사가 갑자기 왜 그렇게 슬프게 들렸던 건지..

    결국 약을 가져가고 .. 그 후에 기억이 휘발..

    순서가 뒤죽박죽인데 실직을 한 후 만난 에디는 꿈같던 대학 이야기를 하며 들떠있고 미키는 애써 웃지만 참 힘들어보여.

    저번 공연을 본 어떤 뀨의 말을 인용하자면, 저번 연기는 그저 일방적으로 에디에게 화를 내는 것처럼 보였다면, 이번 연기는 피식피식 웃으며 체념하는 듯한.

    '체념'이라는 표정이 가장 와닿는 표현인 것 같아.

    일자리를 찾는 것이 힘들다며. 여기에는 크리스마스가 온 적이 없다며. 임금을 반만 받고 일을 2배로 해서라도 그 대사도 깔끔하게 치고. 예전에는 좆같던 그 일, 상자 접는 일을 다시 할 수만 있다면. 이라고 힘들어하는 미키에게.

    자신이 돈이 많으니 린다와 춤추고 술마시고 놀자며 돈다발을 들이미는 에디.

    미키가 정색을 하고 목소리를 내리깔아 돈을 에디 얼굴에 내던지며 꺼져. 하는 대사가. 정말..휴.. 말로 표현할 수 없다.

    내가 다 무섭고 미안한 그 목소리가 처절하게 들리기까지 하더라.

    유복하게 자란 에디가 미키에겐 부러움의 대상이자 그 순간엔 꼴보기 싫은. 그런 친구가 되었겠지.

    시간을 다시 거슬러, 비틀거리며 객석에서 걸어나가는 미키의 뒷모습.

    오른쪽 통로에서 나오는 걸 알고는 있었지만 타이밍을 몰라서 결국 뒷모습밖에 못 본게 나 뀨의 한이 되었다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    미키는 에디에게 총을 들이밀고.. 무슨 대사를 했는지 기억이 안난다..ㅜ

    존스턴 부인에게 모든 사실을 전해들은 미키.

    땀에 젖은 얼굴, 눈물 가득한 눈, 떨리는 목소리, 원망 가득한 눈빛. "왜..날.. 보내지 않았어요?"

    이 대사가 복합된 표정연기에 곁들여져서 더 절절하게 들렸다.

    주인공들이 감정을 채 추스리기도 전에 터진 총탄. 쓰러진 쌍둥이.

    극 초반에서 보여주었던 쌍둥이의 쓰러진 모습이 내 상상속의 모니터에서 클로즈업되면서 내 감정이 증폭...되었으면 더 좋았겠다.

    사실 노네들의 후기처럼 2막이 좀 숨가쁘게 빠르게 진행되어서 배우들의 감정선에 함께 따라갈 만큼의 충분한 시간이 관객들에게 주어지지 않았던 것 같다.

    쌍둥이가 쓰러진 후에 존스턴 부인이 노래를 부르며 자켓을 벗어 덮어주고, 라이온즈 부인의 자켓도 그들에게 덮여진다.

    배우들의 합창이 클라이막스로 치닫으며 극은 끝이 난다.

     

    이 연극은 시대현실이라던지 인간의 이기심이라던지 거스를 수 없는 운명이라던지 참 많은 것들을 비판하고 통찰한 작품인 것 같아.

    이러한 요소가 이 연극의 비극성을 더욱 부각시켜주었던 것도 같고.

    나 뀨에게 조정석의 많은 잔망과 멋짐을 선사해 줌으로써 더 많은 감동과 만족감을 느끼게 해준 작품이라 더 의미가 깊어.

     

     

    내 모든 기억을 여기에 쏟아부었다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 쓰는데는 1시간이 넘게 걸렸으나...

    후기 쓰기 전 하고 싶은 말은 많았는데 모든 걸 글로 옮기기에는 이게 한계인 것 같다.

    아 그리고 커튼콜 때 조정석 눈빛 완전 반짝반짝 벅차보였음. 항상 공연이 끝날 때마다 벅찰 듯.

    커튼콘 때 기립박수 치면서 나 뀨도 벅찼다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    이제 내 관극은 끝이 났구나.. 정말.. 

    정신없는 글이었으나 읽어준 뀨들 수고설리.

    바쁜 뀨들을 위해 중요한 부분은 굵게 해놨어.
