  1. oh I love potatoes too. the inside looks so tasty. but the outside... looks like it was sitting around too long. I don't how I feel about Choi Jin Hyuk the food photographer...  poor thing, his face does seem to swell up easily. I don't know if it's just hereditary or his diet (too much sodium, too much carbs?) now we know that when his face is bony and angular, that means he's been practically starving himself. this is something a lot of girls can relate too, right? always going from dieting to feasting to dieting again. I think his natural weight is not supposed to be model-thin (for example, Zombie Detective or Justice) he's probably the dad-bod type.

  2. @partyon So, how were the biceps? haha hope you were suitably satisfied. they def look good... haha.

@booha thanks for the previews! I can't wait to watch with subs! orange is one of his colors. I think it's like his lucky color. when he wears orange, it feels like he's radiating confidence and competitiveness.

  3. @partyon well done poll! looks like you put a lot of thought into it. nice, nice. I agreed with so many of the selections! it's been almost a full year since his last drama started... a year is a long time to be away especially when he is at his peak as a leading actor right now... it's such a loss for the arts. Korean male actors already lose two years to the military enlistment, so losing another one-two years is really too much. I really respect him as an actor, so I'm feeling this loss on a deep level. although Zombie Detective and Tunnel were astounding successes for any actor to have the fortune of headlining, I feel greedy for more. I feel like Choi Jin Hyuk has more characters to play and more stories to tell. In a way, he is just beginning, but firmly on the road to becoming one of Korea's best all-around leading men. The worst thing would be if directors and screenwriters typecast him. The truth is that he has the skills to play any role he wanted to. He has charisma and the believability to pull off almost any character. As long as the story is well-written, I will keep watching. He is so dependable and solid as an actor. He is always real, genuine, open on the screen. He always manages to look natural, like he's born to be this character or that character. There are so many stories that he can help bring to life with his emotive, expressive face and acting ability. Is it too unrealistic of me to be expecting at least 5-10 more dramas before he turns 40?

You know what kind of drama I want most to see him in next? I want to watch him in a long-running family drama with 100 episodes or more. Or a hit drama like Penthouse or Voice with multiple seasons. To make up for all the lost time of the past year and half. Right now I'm watching the drama, "Once Again", it's one of those really well-written family dramas that you never get bored of and fall in love with all the characters. That way, we'll get to see him on-screen continuously for almost a whole year!

  4. After months of watching our homebody in oversized t-shirts and a protective layer of winter padding enveloping his face, which I faintly recall used to be rather chiseled, I had almost forgotten he used to have statuesque megastar good looks. I am slightly unused to this dashing long-legged stranger posing there like a model in the photo wearing sharp golf attire. Who could this person be? Almost completely unrecognizable!

  5. @booha I almost forgot to thank you for the wonderful gif's of wet-haired Choi Jin Hyuk. he looks good soaked in a pool or having water thrown in his face like in Running Man. he knows he looks good, too, that sly boy. look at him slowwwly pushing his hair back. my heart fluttered a bit, it felt like the old passion was being ignited in my bitter cynical heart again.

it also looks like he lost some of the winter fat he put on during his hibernation.

oh that wily Kim Jong-Kook is such a bully sometimes. he's driving Choi Jin Hyuk literally into the corner, making him fall down prematurely. he had nowhere else to retreat. Choi Jin Hyuk looked like he was strong enough to have held onto the pole longer if it weren't for that sneaky move.

@partyon I agree with you. I think as his fans, we are attracted to that combination of manliness and a certain "purity". he is certainly more pure if you compare him to some of the other more "experienced" members on Mom's Diary. he doesn't seem to be the cunning scheming double faced complicated type. not saying these are exactly what the regulars on this show are... haha. but the regulars have a certain vibe, and Choi Jin Hyuk doesn't give off the same vibe. so he may have trouble fitting into the group as a whole. I also hope he can stay this way with his good qualities intact. but he should get married soon. marriage is a good thing for men to have. otherwise, they just stay at home playing video games all day, haha. at least a wife would stop letting him eat so much instant noodles and more greens.

  6. I was seriously thinking about attending his next fan meet as a birthday present to myself. That was back when I had him on a pedestal and before watching Mom's Diary haha. I can only blame the show for being a little too realistic! It kinda threw cold water on my ridiculous fantasy of him haha.

I keep on worrying for him, though. I am worried that appearing on Mom's Diary and the creation of the "handsome idiot" moniker would negatively affect his career and make him lose some choice roles in the future. The hosts keep exclaiming how he's so clumsy. So I'm worried that casting directors won't consider him for certain roles like special forces soldier, detective, lawyer, doctor, chef, that requires the appearance of being skillful and/or brilliant, etc. I just hope Mom's Diary brings him good luck and even better opportunities. I really hope to see him snag some amazing dramas. I'm just curious and wary of how reality shows like this can affect actors' careers.

  7. Well Japanese viewers are in for a real treat...!! I read a blog written by a writer in Japan and I recommended Zombie Detective to her a while ago, but at the time it wasn't available on Netflix so she couldn't watch it legally. Now I can tell her that it'll be on TV! Zombie Detective is the perfect drama to watch during this pandemic! Do you guys think that Choi Jin Hyuk will get a lot of new fans after this drama airs in Japan? I for one think so! After all, Zombie Detective is where I fell head over heels in love with him ^^ Tunnel paved the way, though. It put him on the map and got me to notice him and develop real respect for his acting. Not all actors can really act. He just has this immense gift for acting, an ability to act like the camera isn't there. His face is relaxed on the screen, he doesn't freeze up and neither does he over-act. His acting is just so natural and magnetic. There are a lot of people who are very smart and very talented but you put them in front of a camera and they just freeze or turn to mush. People who are suave in person turn awkward, and articulate speakers turn into babbling idiots. Only a few people can handle the pressure of being in front of a camera. Choi Jin Hyuk comes alive on camera. It's really amazing, if you think about it. Acting is a very unpredictable gift. You really can't tell who has the gift until you actually cast them. They may even perform well in rehearsals but in the actual scene lose steam and miss the beat. I just wish Zombie Detective could be broadcast at an earlier time so that more people can catch this great drama and be comforted, entertained, and laugh a lot. This drama is like a hug, a sweater, and a mug of tea all rolled into one on a winter day. Even if I didn't like Choi Jin Hyuk, it is still a fantastic drama. Sigh... just thinking about the first time watching Zombie Detective puts a big silly grin on my face :) Choi Jin Hyuk has turned me into an idiot...

  8. I am really looking forward to this next episode! Seems like a small group setting may suit him more. He kinda got lost in midst of all those fierce and outspoken guys at the pep rally. It's a tough crowd, especially being the new face. He's so brave!

By the way, he looks good in a lot of outfits, but I think my favorite is when he wears this color - tan/khaki/beige (?) He looks like a ray of light :)

It's such a waste when he just wears an oversized t-shirt that hides his figure :P

He really shines when he puts on clothing that suits him.

The color is similar to this jacket he wore traveling to an overseas fan meeting. Love that jacket so much!

  9. This episode of Ugly Duckling is all about how abnormal you need to be in order to be eligible to join the cast. I love the part where Choi Jin Hyuk is being introduced to the team and they're remarking that he seems too normal. And then the sharp and witty hosts back in the studio are slyly pointing out that he's really not that normal. It is so funny and cracks me up. They're mostly good-natured and accurate observations. But later on, some cast members were a little bit harsh on Choi Jin Hyuk's soccer playing. Yes he did make some really random kicks, which was kinda funny, but I guess it was frustrating for his team members and they had to say something. I'm sure if Choi Jin Hyuk knew ahead of time that they would be playing soccer, he would have practiced his moves beforehand and made sure to be more prepared. But one of the cast members tends to not hold back when pointing out other's mistakes. I guess that's kinda like me, so I should also learn to be more gentle with my words on this forum and in real life as well. Even if what they say is completely true, I think it can be hurtful to be criticized in that way in front of everyone especially being a new member. Being on shows like this is no joke. Ego and pride really takes a beating. The fact that Choi Jin Hyuk's made it this far in the entertainment industry mostly intact and mostly normal is an admirable feat. I really don't think I could have done it, to be honest. You really need a thick skin and persistence. Seriously, I have so much respect for him to have survived and is now thriving. Many people in this world are born with talents and gifts, but only a few ever have enough grit to pursue their passions and luck to make their dreams a reality. In that way, Choi Jin Hyuk is heroic. Back to the soccer game - I feel like he lost steam and seemed dispirited and uncertain in the second half after they criticized him. I wonder if his knee was starting to hurt, since he was moving very slowly then and not trying as hard to score. He mentioned that he used to be a very fast runner but his knee problems seems to be affecting his playing ability. This is so sad for guys who are used to being active and can't run and play like they used to. Poor baby.

Ultimately though, he knows, we know, and the Ugly Duckling cast knows that Choi Jin Hyuk belongs to the acting world, and it was only due to the pandemic that he had enough free time to participate. We are lucky to have these few precious episodes and a peek into the "real" Choi Jin Hyuk. I do hope he makes more effort to level up his cooking skills beyond ramen and kimchi fried rice. I've yet to see him eat a vegetable other than kimchi. I wish he would eat more healthy and more health foods. He doesn't seem as health obsessed as other people. Like, I want to see him whip up a smoothie with organic spinach, blueberries, soy milk, and chia seeds. I want to see him digging into a bowl of kale, quinoa, and tempeh. I want to hear him wax poetic about the virtues of phytonutrients and antioxidants. I want to hear him lecture about the importance of fiber. But he seems very much a meat and potatoes kind of guy. Oh well.

As they say, although he is "not totally normal", he is "really wonderful in dramas." I couldn't agree more with this. He is really wonderful in dramas. What a wonderful compliment to make, and so true.

  10. Maybe he was thinking of this scene with Jang Nara in The Last Empress, the last time that someone tried to feed him. He seems uncomfortable here too! I would also feel weird if someone suddenly tries to feed me, it makes me feel helpless and self-conscious about how it looks. I think being fed requires a lot of trust and intimacy LOL

A few months ago, Lee Min-ho uploaded this video of him and Lee Seung-gi day camping and holding a small live concert outdoors. I don't know if you guys have seen it? Anyways, I immediately thought of Choi Jin Hyuk, who has worked with both these guys, and I thought, dang, how nice it would be if they could have invited him. I even wrote a comment "Next time please invite Choi Jin Hyuk!". I was actually really sad that they didn't include him, because he loves to sing and he sings so well. You can just imagine him singing live in that great outdoor setting with professional musicians accompanying him... it made me sad because a lot of the Youtube videos of him singing were filmed by fans at his fan meetings where he just sang to a pre-recorded track, and so the quality isn't that great. But he has such a beautiful voice. I really wish he could do something like this - just a professionally recorded performance with musicians of songs he likes, not just drama theme songs. I would love to listen to a whole album of songs like that. I downloaded a lot of the fan-made videos of him singing his favorite songs, but the quality is so terrible! Such a good singer, such a darn shame he doesn't have an album or at least high quality recordings of songs he likes to sing. I really think live instruments make a big difference, like the acoustic guitarist accompanying Lee Seunggi. The quality instantly goes up.

Also, you really have to watch Lee Minho and Lee Seunggi's slick and professionally made camping and singing video to fully enjoy Choi Jin Hyuk's camping and singing video. It makes it twice as funny and poignant. For me, it's funny and heartbreaking at the same time. I hate when gifted singers don't have any high quality recordings of their music. I mean, it can't cost that much to make a video like this, right? Choi Jin Hyuk can afford it, right? I had my hopes up that Lee Minho might actually invite Choi Jin Hyuk, but I realize that every friendship is different and he would only do this for someone that he really wants to do it for. You can't force someone to make a video like this for someone else, it really has to come from the heart. In this case, Lee Minho may have just liked this particular song of Lee Seunggi's and was inspired to record a cinematic acoustic version of it. Choi Jin Hyuk may have to get the ball rolling himself. It would be neat if he could write his own songs. He is a great actor but the world forgets that he is also a great singer. I have rarely seen an actor who is both brilliant on the screen and on the ears as Choi Jin Hyuk is. I'm really not just saying that, it's true. A lot of the actor-singers in my country are both mediocre singers and mediocre actors, but are still famous and successful for whatever reason. But Choi Jin Hyuk... has a genuine gift and affinity for the arts of acting and singing. The downside is that he can't do both to its full potential at the same time. So it's kind of like not having one of the gifts because he doesn't have the time to use it. Most people would be lucky to have one gift, but he has two. Again, I hate that his singing is on the back burner now. Anything could happen, I just want him to record an album of songs he genuinely likes, like the ones he sings at fan meetings. I can't re-watch his dramas all the time, but I can listen to his songs all day long, his voice is especially soothing at night time. Come to think of it, there are not many baritone singers even in my country. I can count 1 or 2, but I don't necessarily like the songs or the styles they sing. But Choi Jin Hyuk's voice and his song preferences resonate with me. Gah.

  11. Bae Doona and Choi Jin Hyuk as suggested above for the film - two very charismatic actors together - that would be so interesting to watch! I'm assuming she would be playing his daughter, though, so it wouldn't be a romantic pairing. Would love to see them together, if there is a director out there brilliant enough as the person who suggested this pairing. I have a theory why film directors don't cast Choi Jin Hyuk in films, but I'll save that for another day to hash over. I'm sure the film version will be great - it better be great because the drama was already great. They already have a proven recipe for success, and so if they manage to make a film that is worse than the drama, well then, that would be really hard to do, wouldn't it? Actually, Tunnel the drama, if you just edit the episodes down to 3 hours, you'll get an instant film that way. Just saved them a million dollars, you're welcome. Most Korean dramas, if you just cut it down to feature film length, would be AMAZING films. You cut out all the fillers and fluff, and keep all the good stuff. These film-length dramas would actually be more watchable and enjoyable than some real films! You know how some Korean and Japanese films can be really artsy and super boring with the worst dialogue, right? But somehow they still manage to get made. I bet our drama films could even win Oscars, because there are some Korean dramas that are super well made and superior in quality to films. There are so many dramas that I would love to go back and re-watch, if I had more time. But how often do you have time or the patience to re-watch 16 episode-long dramas, even if they were fantastic? For a long time, I've wanted to edit my favorite dramas down to feature film-length so that I can re-watch them more often. Even my favorite dramas have parts that could be cut out. Plus, it just seems like a fun intellectual exercise - selecting which scenes to keep and which scenes if left out can actually make it better.

On another subject - have you noticed how "veteran" experienced lead actors like Choi Jin Hyuk half of the time gets paired up with novice inexperienced actors? For example, Justice, Zombie Detective. As directors and casting directors, the job is not just to find the best looking pair, but most importantly, the best acting pair. Personally, I think this type of uneven match-up is a recipe for disaster, and a waste of talent. The method that makes most sense is pairing up good actors with good actors, so that you get a good drama. One actor, no matter how good, cannot make up for another actor's weaknesses and shortcomings. This may sound harsh, but a bad actor, especially in a lead role, can undo all the advantages that a drama may have, such as a strong script or an otherwise strong ensemble.

PS The English subs for Ugle Duckling are out!!! And I love Choi Jin Hyuk's appearance this time!!! Our handsome idiot is back and just as idiotic yet strangely lovable!!! He is a man full of surprises. Definitely not your typical A-list leading actor in Seoul. The TV show is listed as Mom's Diary - My Ugly Duckling. Episode 243. He appears in the last 40 minutes, but if you have time, the first part is nice and touching to watch. It shows another celebrity - a singer who visits his mom's grave - she passed away when he was 22-23, before he became successful. It was very sad to see, you could see the regret and sadness in his face. His mom is the one person who supported and loved him the most, and the one he misses the most now. I feel that although Choi Jin Hyuk has experienced a lot of struggles and difficulties in his career and personal life, he is fortunate to have both parents around, and that he could shower them with love and gifts now that he's successful. He doesn't have live with the regret of not being able to give back to mom and treat her well. But I know he has other regrets... but still... I guess those of us who have parents around are unspeakably lucky, even if it can still be frustrating at times, right?

  12. Oh I'm so glad to hear he'll be appearing again in something. Anything! I am SO ready for a Choi Jin Hyuk drama though. It's when he's not around that I really start to miss good actors like him. I've been trying so hard to find a good drama to watch lately, but nothing catches my eye or heart these days. I lose interest very quickly if the actors are not up to par. You know, with some actors, you believe in them from the very first minute. They capture your attention right from the start. They fit their character with this kind of ease and bring it to life. And then you know you are the presence of greatness.
I just keep thinking, "if only he was Choi Jin Hyuk..." If only! Choi Jin Hyuk is really a special actor. He makes characters real and make them come to life. He would have added so much depth and emotional range to the main character. He makes acting look easy. Again, having the ideal face and the perfect nose are not what makes a drama good. A nose does not bring a story to life. Good acting does. And acting comes from the inside. You either have it or you don't. It's true. A lot of people, including directors and casting directors, make this mistake: they look for actors who fit the image they have in their mind of what a lead actor should look like. They think as long as they get an actor with those types of looks, it will guarantee a top-notch drama with high ratings. Oh but they are so wrong.

  13. I have to say, again, he was really cute as a kid. Not all actors have such adorable childhood photos, even if they grew into handsome adults. Choi Jin Hyuk's been good-looking all along, which is actually quite rare. Kinda makes you want to have a kid, doesn't it? Not easy raising a boy, but if he turns out anything like Choi Jin Hyuk, it would all be worth it.

By the way, there's something I wanted to say, even if it's useless at this point: I really miss how he used to look, up till around Pasta. I miss his cute face and that cute nose in particular. Back then, his eyes were the first thing you noticed. Now, the first thing you notice is his nose. I think for an actor, the eyes are more important than the nose, anyways. I think he had a really nice nose to begin with. It hurts me to think what kind of pressure made him want to change it in any way. Now, the balance shifted more towards his nose. It takes the focus away from his emotive eyes, which is a shame, because for an actor, eyes are the main focus point. Anyways, as I mentioned, there's no point to talk about his nose now. Since it can't be changed back anymore. But just some thoughts about actors, the screen, and cosmetic surgery. In general, my opinion is that the screen is very unforgiving towards cosmetic surgery, and surgeons are not artists - their work is not artistic. They may give you an "ideal" nose, but it may look unnatural on your face and throw off the delicate balance of your features. So I think it's better to stick with what you got if you want to be an actor. You don't need a perfect nose to be a good actor. Actually, I think the actors we know who have the ideal perfect noses aren't always the best actors. Actors should not do anything to their faces, especially the nose - it's too risky to mess with something so important. The natural, no matter how "imperfect" is still vastly better than the "perfect" nose made by some individual who went to med school - not art school - at least on the screen. What do y'all think? Thanks for reading, as always :)

edit: because this is a sensitive subject, I would like to apologize for offending any readers who went to med school and/or have experience with cosmetic procedures. I didn't mean to put you down. actually, the surgeon who worked on his nose did a pretty good job. I mean, it's not bad looking at all. you can even say it looks better than before. but there are times I can still tell it's unnatural, that's just me. I have a critical eye, I guess. I can't help it. and being able to tell is distracting. I prefer the natural, imperfect aesthetics of the nose his mama gave him. It's boring if every actor had the same looking nose. I'm getting a little tired of the sharp, high-bridged look anyways. I think the nose he had was beautiful and I can't help but miss it sometimes and feel sad that he had to change it. I realize that he became the breadwinner in his family when he was young, so he must have felt a great deal of pressure to get ahead. And so some things that were precious had to be sacrificed in order to advance in his career.

  14. just tell me where to send the money! let's do this quickly before some other crazy fan group gets the same great idea and buys up all the splatter screens in Korea for him. I can imagine him sitting on his living room floor surrounded by boxes of splatter screens, googling ideas for making arts and crafts on his phone as mentioned with all the extra ones he's about to get...

  15. Thanks for the update on his activities. Very unexpected but also makes sense to hear him join a golf show. I remember he mentioned in an interview that he discovered that he really liked golfing after learning it for Heirs. And to be honest, as obsessed as I am with Choi Jin Hyuk, I can't help but be relieved he is no longer doing invasive reality shows with multiple cameras in his home. I think it really affects my perception of him as an actor and it will distract me from immersing in his future dramas. By the way, are those two rolls of kitchen mats in the picture he posted on Instagram of the 15 anniversary gifts? ^^ I wanted to get him a splatter screen for when he pan fries the beef. Haha. Let's look forward to the golfing show hahaha I wonder how they will manage to make it interesting hahaha. But I understand everyone's disappointment. I never watch golf either. It's more fun to play golf in person, but watching it on TV seems really boring, doesn't it?

I also want to mention, I think the reason why we do feel a bit let down about the abrupt end to his appearance on My Little Old Boy is that the ending was really abrupt! The episode just ended literally in the middle of them still chatting in the living room. That was not well done at all. You don't wrap up a story like that. It leaves us literally hanging. And with all sorts of questions left unanswered. Such as, "Why does he have so many fridges?" and "Why does he have fermented skate in his fridge when he doesn't like to eat fish?" and "Why does he put his clothes on the floor to absorb splattering grease?". It feels like you're having a dream and then suddenly you wake up. The dream is all jumbled up and makes no sense. Right?

  16. Because I'm bored and Mr Choi is taking a break with no end in sight... he could be on break for the rest of this year... let's talk more about his appearance on Ugly Duckling. I watch his part in the show a lot. It makes me laugh, which is good for my well-being. And then I went back to watch the episode he was on Running Man to promote Heirs. Man... he was like a different creature! Lean, mean, fighting machine. All muscle, all brawn, all confidence, all smiles. He even won the game! What a champion he was. And then... to compare that with his bumbling appearance (no offense intended) on Ugly Duckling... is such a shock to my system lol. But we are all like that, aren't we? We have times when we were at our peak, when we were shining. And then times when we are unsure, eating ramen and getting fat, sitting in front of the tv. I just found it interesting that the Running Man Choi Jin Hyuk was a natural automatic woman-magnet. You just feel drawn to him. He was so attractive. And then contrast that to his real down to earth at home self on Ugly Ducking... relaxed and letting his physique go... at this time, he just seems like a brother figure to me. he's not unattractive, but there is something different in how I react to him, you know? do you guys or girls know what I mean? the reaction is different. I'm trying to figure out why. I think maybe I like guys who are on the thin side. like how he was on Running Man and Zombie Detective. but during those times he can't eat what he likes to eat. but when he can eat what he likes to eat, his face isn't as sharp, his body is like a marshmallow, and if he keeps this up, he'll be dad-bod soon. hahaha. so I think the secret to being a top Korean star is being tall and thin and toned. there's a physical appeal that is undeniable.

So that's something I have in common with Choi Jin Hyuk. Actually, more than one. We both hate fish (but then why did he have fermented skate in his fridge...?! was it for him or for his family?) and we both struggle with staying in shape. it's funny how he complains a lot about how the hardest thing about being an actor is working out and not being able to eat what he wants. he's mentioned that in at least one interview. it cracks me up. I can relate... I am positive that inside Choi Jin Hyuk is a fat person trying to get out... hahaha

As men and women age... especially if you're on screen... you slowly lose the sex symbol status... maybe this happens after 40... and then what do you have left? what you have left is life experience... character... sense of humor... etc. I wonder what kind of actor Choi Jin Hyuk would be like someday when he's older, maybe with a beer belly. I think he would still be a solid actor, someone who captures your attention. He does have that quality in dramas.

What dramas are you watching while waiting for his comeback? Any substitute Zoppa's? Right now I'm watching Mouse. So nostalgic for character-based stories like Zombie Detective. Taking that drama and also Tunnel were two of the best career decisions he's ever made. And he has better dramas than some other top actors. Think of the really famous actors his age or older who maybe had one good drama and then weren't as lucky afterwards. they may be more rich but their acting career isn't as rich. Choi Jin Hyuk is so blessed to have not one but two outstanding dramas. And a bunch of other decent ones such as Emergency Couple and Pride and Prejudice. If you look at superstars, sometimes they peak early in their 20's, get one hit drama, and then afterwards they get rich with lots of ads and commercials, but never get another really good drama.

  17. If he takes too long of a break... it will make me suspicious that he is dating someone... Choi Jin Hyuk... I'm not ready for you to date and marry yet... *tears* wait for me to get married first and then you can do whatever you like... hehe...

  18. Yeah I agree with your concerns about him appearing in variety shows. I really have mixed feelings about it. Of course as a fan, I am happy to be able to see him and inside his living space, satisfying my own curiousities. But the question is, is it good for him? If I were his friends or family member, I would worry a lot about him exposing his private life and apartment. I wonder what made him decide to do it? Is there a slowdown in dramas, less roles available - or he has reached a stage in his life where acting in dramas is not fulfilling anymore, and he wants to try new things? I hope he will be alright and nothing bad happens.

This may an unpopular opinion - but I don't think he needs to do this show at all. His acting skills is at the top - professionally and financially - I have a hard time seeing the need for him to appear in this type of show. Especially since his real life persona and on screen persona are so different hehehe. To be honest, what if I'm watching his next drama but the scenes of him from this reality show keep appearing in my head and distract me from immersing in the drama? am I just worrying too much?

I think what we're seeing with Choi Jin Hyuk is an artist who has poured his heart and soul into his craft, so much that there isn't much left to use in other areas of life. But there are a lot of people like that. I have a musician relative who often forgets dates and misses his flights because he arrives at the airport a day late. We joke that smart people have smart people problems. About the kitchen floor laundry thing - maybe his mom was nagging him a lot to keep the floor clean - so he would rather get his clothes dirty than to leave grease on the floor, which his mom hates. This is just my guess. It's so fascinating trying to figure out someone's thinking process and analyze why they do what they do.

  19. Uploaded some screen shots for you guys if you haven't had a chance to watch it. I really enjoyed these moments between him and his former co-stars from Zombie Detective. they don't hold anything back and tease him like real older siblings do to younger siblings. Choi Jin Hyuk is the youngest one here and he's very respectful to them. below are the "guitar" gate and "fried noodle" gate. before his friends arrived were the other gates such as the infamous "laundry on the kitchen floor" gate, the "weightlifting" gate, and the "unfinished inversion table assembly" gate. I think these were the things that struck viewers as the most memorable and quirky about Choi Jin Hyuk. He definetly became a hot topic as a result of appearing on this show, but probably not in the way anyone would have expected... anyways, sorry if I sounded harsh or judgemental... I actually really like Choi Jin Hyuk and enjoyed watching this episode a lot and laughed a ton at him. Thanks to him, everyone was able to release some stress by laughing. Also, the unexpected breakout star of this episode was to me, his former costars. I love their real life personalities so much. I thought their roles in Zombie Detective were a little campy and over the top at times, but their real life personalities are really wonderful. I hope they also get more work opportunities as a result of guesting.

  20. Nothing kills a fantasy faster than watching a capable actor struggling to go about in daily life on a reality show...

This show is making me reconsider whether I want to marry Choi Jin Hyuk... Maybe I'll be much happier and saner just watching him acting in dramas as opposed to having to live with him in real life... He'll be busy filming dramas and when not filming, he'll be wandering around the house like a zombie without a brain...playing video games... then weight lifting... then eating instant noodles... then covering the kitchen floor in dirty laundry... Reminds me of the TV interview where Jang Nara mentioned that he is very forgetful, like a fish. He seems to be using only half his brain for daily life.

It's not really the clothes on the floor that bothers me (hey if he wants to wear steak-scented clothes, go ahead) but what actually bothers me more is that he serves guests instant noodles...!!! to me, that is a huge no-no. I mean, you have 3-4 fridges, you have a successful career and just moved to a spacious new apartment, and guests are taking time out of their busy day to visit you with gifts in hand... even if I didn't know how to cook, I would at least ask my mom to prepare food in advance for my guests. maybe instant noodles is acceptable fare for bros just hanging out, I guess... I wonder how beneficial would his appearance be for his acting career? I mean, probably no more chef roles... but thank goodness for his two friends that he made recently filming dramas. He needs friends like that who can point out areas that need improvement in a humorous way. Although he must be getting a lot of flak right now for laying out clothes on the floor, in the long run, it will save his future wife some hassle. Now he will change his ways and that will be less work and less fighting in his future household. Imagine marrying the man of your dreams and then finding out that he puts laundry on the floor as a creative solution for keeping the kitchen floor clean. Imagine all the fights and tears that are now being prevented from his future marriage because everyone and their grandma is scolding him right now about his unorthodox behavior. Being on this show will slowly help guys like him become better marriage material. Hopefully...

Thank you @booha on Chef Jang's pictures.  I am glad that he took this role in Mr Queen.   I was emo a bit when when he was at the library looking at the King Cheol Jong pic.  Not sure whether he crying in sadness, having to leave him or happiness seeing CJ made it.  I guess mixed feeling, just like many of us.  Wish the ending was not so rushed but generally, I enjoy Mr Queen.

The drama was a delight, just wish Choi Jin Hyuk's cameo was more substantial. Too greedy, aren't I? Did you notice his hair color was quite unusual in the last episode? It had specks of gray. I wonder why they did that to his hair hehe.

On an completely unrelated note, I would like to point out how much Jang Nara reminds me of the elementary school version of Choi Jin Hyuk! The resemblance is uncanny. The same bright round eyes. The cute button nose. The sunny smile. The snow white skin.

Borrowing Booha's heart-achingly adorable photo of Choi Jin Hyuk for reference to compare:

Hello hello  nice to stop by here.   still wishing for Zombie-2  I know at this point it’s unlikely it will happen. But that zombie MY is such a uniquely developed character that not seeing it more is sad. What a waste.  CJH put a lot of effort into it.  He seemed to lose weight for it.  The script would have been better..  maybe then..  oh well life has to go on I guess.   I agree I think it’s time for some romcom for his fans.  :happy2:

Ah, Bonghwan... this cameo gives mixed feelings. On one hand, it's nice to be able to see him again so soon after Zombie Detective. On the other hand... not completely satisfied with the Blue House chef character. There were so few scenes of him. It looks like they shot a lot of footage in the kitchen, but they only used so little of it. The screenwriter and director fail to convince me that he's really the Blue House chef. The scenes they showed were not enough, if you know what I mean. He just did not seem like a chef at all. An attractive man? Yes. I loved the club scenes of him hitting on another man. And the falling into the pool part was well written. But in general, there's just not enough material there for the audience to really connect with Bonghwan or Choi Jin Hyuk. The character seemed fake, to be honest. Plus, I know that in an interview, Choi Jin Hyuk mentioned that he doesn't cook at all hahaha. So him as chef is not believable. I don't buy it haha. So all in all, do I think this cameo was a success? Not really... again, mixed feelings. I noticed that his IG followers reached 1 million recently, though. So maybe he did gain some fans thanks to Mr. Queen. But was the cameo high quality? No. Because there were not enough scenes of Bonghwan, it did not feel real at the end to see him wake up in the hospital and react with relief and joy at the bookstore while reading the history book. It felt really fake, because he had to pull all of those emotions out of thin air. I usually love his smile, but in this case, that felt fake too. So while the cameo seems like a great idea on paper, the execution was flawed. I don't think the screenwriter and director spent enough time on Bonghwan. It felt like anybody could have played in this part. They didn't even really need Choi Jin Hyuk, honestly. It was an unnecessary use of his time and talent. I wouldn't mind if he never took part of Mr Queen and just used that time to rest and look for a better project. But work is work, and all that. Definetly, Zombie Detective leaves an unforgettable memory. The writer is so talented and hope they can work together again. But I didn't lik the last scene where they meet up at the club. It seemed too frivolous and casual. It would have been nice to end the drama on a more meaningful way.

Whaha  Thank you for reminding us CJH is only 35 (yeah in the US).  I like your thinking about the age 35 and 36.

It sounds like that comes from someone with seasoned maturity haha   Yes at some point in one’s age, one has to shave off aging anywhere possible physically and/or psychologically. lol :tounge_xd:   Yup 35 gives out more of a youngish vibe  haha  Still he has to feel his biological clock is ticking for marriage and family.

Thank you for posting the award video with CJH.  It was from 2016/11/26 when CJH made the first public appearance after his MS disaster.  It was like a coming back event for him before Tunnel.   I was so happy seeing him again that I didn’t pay attention who was awarded or what kind of event it was.  All that mattered was that CJH returned walking normally after waiting anxiously many months.
This time I watched the video closely.  Korea hosted 2016-WebTVAsia Awards, and I was surprised to learn about the person who won this award.
According to wiki; … Pikotaro, a fictional singer-songwriter created and portrayed by Japanese comedian Daimaou Kosaka...

PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) was released as a music video on YouTube on 25 August 2016, and has since become a viral video…    spawned parodies, and has been hailed as the new "Gangnam Style" by various newspapers and online media.
((**It must be still popular, with over 377 million views currently))

PIKOTARO - PPAP (Pen Pineapple Apple Pen) (Long Version) [Official Video]

Kosaka( aka Pikotaro) is a comedian, so he showed off his goofiness around the award ceremony. ie he thanked the list of people( father, mother, brother, sister, my house cat, neighborhood cousin, Justinbieber, and all of you who supported me)   CJH’s expression suggests that he knew who Kosaka( aka Pikotaro) was.

I'm very impressed that you watched this ceremony back when it happened. Thanks for all the wonderful background info and details. At the time I was still unaware of Choi Jin Hyuk's existence. But Tunnel would change all that. Unless he gets another awesome project somewhere down the line, to me, Tunnel (and Zombie Detective) will always be his most memorable, defining works. I love when he stars in well-written stories with a strong focus on character and less on romance. I don't like it when actors get objectified and packaged into these beefcakes for female audience's viewing pleasure. The work ends up shallow and the characters forgettable. I want well-rounded characters that we can really get to know. To be honest, I'm tired of watching him kiss on screen. Am I getting jealous? Maybe! But after a while, it doesn't interest me anymore. I want him to get meaty roles with substance, that leave an indelible memory. Not fluffy chaebol types or robotic stereotypical action figure. Zombie Detective is one of those dramas that you can watch over and over again because of how well the character is written. The screenwriter took the time to make you fall in love with him, all without a single kiss.

Lastly, I noticed that the drama immediately following Heirs in the same time slot was none other than You Who Came From The Star, starring Jun Ji Hyun. My heart dropped in my chest seeing that recently, because the reason I could not finish watching that drama was because of the leading actor, who in my personal opinion was miscast. Apparently, the two leads worked well together in a previous project, so that's why they were cast again for You Who Came From The Star. But I could not feel their chemistry. The whole time Kim Soo Hyun just seemed like Jun Ji Hyun's stony-faced younger brother. Even though I love the screenwriter for her previous dramas such as Queen of Housewives, I could not for the life of me continue watching the drama. Now I realize, a little brokenheartedly, that Choi Jin Hyuk would have been absolutely PERFECT as Do Min Joon opposite Jun Ji Hyun. It breaks my heart just to think about it. About what could have been. It's so sad when well-written dramas have less than perfect casting. I wonder if anyone feels the same way? I present you the photos from an alternate world where Choi Jin Hyuk stars in You Who Came From the Stars with Jun Ji Hyun:

Also, another screenwriter that Choi Jin Hyuk should have on his radar is Park Jae Bum. He is a screenwriter who writes really awesome action dramas with a strong lead and ensemble cast. For example, The Fiery Priest and Chief Kim. Both were highly rated and highly watchable. They totally deserved their ratings and praise. His newest drama is coming out soon. It's called "Vincenzo" and again, I feel like this would have been so suited to Choi Jin Hyuk. I feel like if he actively courted the writer, he would have a fighting chance of getting a lead role in the future. Screenwriters like Park Jae Bum are a rare breed who can combine different genres such as action and humor and also manage to be meaningful. His dramas are satisfying for both the mind, the heart, and soul. I'll be watching Vincenzo and the whole time wishing it was Choi Jin Hyuk. I already saw the trailer, and I still think Choi Jin Hyuk fits the role better. If you get a chance, check out Vincenzo and see if you agree.

  24. Here's a funny and random video clip of the time Choi Jin Hyuk presented an award to Pikotaro, creator of the Pen Pineapple Apple Pen song. You can see him standing in the back of the stage trying not to laugh at Pikotaro's long-winded and slightly ridiculous acceptance speech. His face is hilarious. It's like, "What am I doing here?" and "Is this for real?" He's obviously trying so hard to take it seriously. And the two professional translators sharing one microphone, furiously translating to English and Korean. The whole awards ceremony seems a bit off-kilter in general, doesn't it? They just rented a large conference room at some hotel, haha. Looks like a scene from a romantic comedy or something.
