  1. Guys, I just realized that after the CLOY awards season is over, we can still see HB and SYJ on stage together. The both of them just have to be nominated at the baeksang awards ( doesn't matter if TV or film) during the same year. And as long as they win the popularity award again, we'll see the both of them on stage!
  2. WOW THIS IS AMAZING!!! I think 1 thing you've forgotten is the Daesang. Kim Hye Ja has won a total of FOUR daesangs. She's amazing! Kim Hee Ae on the other hand has won 2 Daeasang's for TV. I think those matter in ranking Nonetheless, this tally is close to perfect
  3. @TotoroSY we think alike! haha. was scratching my head too over some of the things i was reading here and on twitter. @lavanta I don't think people will ever be satisfied until they admit it. In reality, celebrities wont admit until there's proof beyond reasonable doubt (like pictures holding hands etc). haha. In the states, even if celebs are caught holding hands they may not admit anything because they don't want to talk about their personal lives. I think one of the reasons people here tend to nitpick is the lack of "content" from them. Unlike in europe or the US where you get paparazzi pictures often, in korea you don't unless it's a big reveal. So people tend to speculate during public appearances, interviews etc which in reality are all staged to an extent. All these celebs are aware of their every move because they know they are being closely watched esp in Korea. Celebs only let us see what they want us too see. That's part of their PR and branding. I just find it funny that people nitpick over this when they have a stolen grocery picture which basically says it all. That's HB and SYJ in their uninhibited nature. haha. We never know if we will actually see them together again for CLOY related stuff. Completely agree with @binyeji to just enjoy the fact that they were both drop-dead gorgeous, that we saw them together after A LONG TIME, and celebrate the win + the acceptance speech. Let's not be part of those spreading groundless rumors. Let's keep things light & fun without going overboard.
  4. I don't understand why people are commenting on them looking awkward together on cam. HAHA.. Yejin as you guys know is very friendly. In fancams with Jung Hae In in last year's award show, they were smiling and laughing at each other, she touched his arm to tell him something and even took a selfie at one point. We all know Yejin is by nature bubbly and somewhat affectionate. During some parts of baeksang though, you see HB looking at her laughing etc. But since there is so much fanfare and speculation around her and Hyun Bin, they have to tone it down in front of the cameras. Isn't that what we expected though? A tap to the shoulder or a simple glance is blown out of proportion when it could just be a natural gesture. At this point, they had to deny their relationship 3-4 times already. The attention on them right now is kinda like BRANGELINA (back in the day) and that's without admitting anything. Imagine what happens if they actually admit, they'll be the BRANGELINA (at their peak) of not just KOREA BUT ASIA. They are actors that are very passionate about their jobs. Usually when their personal life is revealed to the public, it can overshadow their work. I don't think they work 3-8 months on a project just for it to be overshadowed by questions on their personal lives. In korea especially, they are very conservative and these things can be considered "scandals' that impact their films or tv work. That's why a lot of korean megastars remain single (at least in the public's eyes, but may actually have partners. there are some who don't even say they are married until the media catches on) and make a conscious effort to keep their personal lives personal. On top of that, those who go public usually breakup. We all know where SYJ stands cause she's never had a "scandal" in her 20 years. As for me though, the way I see HB & SYJ's, there's no need to overanalyze things (as I noticed some people tend to do) to find proof. They say that usually the simplest reason is the right one. More than those CLOY BTS or interviews (actors can be extra friendly for to promote their work so i try to not read into those things), it's really the grocery pictures. These two people were spotted in LA doing groceries together. They met up NOT in korea but abroad to do something very domestic. IT'S AS CLEAR AS DAY in my eyes. Hahaha. I don't think they'll ever confirm anything (unless they decide to tie the knot) and it's actually better for both their careers and whatever kind of relationship they have. Let's take the simplest reason for doing grocery shopping with a "buddy' abroad and leave it at that. I urge us not to respect their privacy as well by not overanalysing or speculate too much (like when they'll get married and things like that) without basis. Let's just take it for what it is and not add anything. Just enjoy the moment and be happy. I really wish them success in both their personal live and careers. I'm so excited for their future projects especially on the heels of CLOY's WORLDWIDE SUCCESS. This is really such an exciting time for them career wise!
  5. There are other award shows where we might see them but if they don't win, they won't attend. Usually in these award shows, it's the winners who attend unlike Baeksang. And it also depends on their schedules. They are Korean A-Listers/megastars after all. -Other award shows: korea drama awards, seoul international drama awards, APAN awards, and seoul awards I read that some of you were wondering why korean media was referring to them as a couple, that's how they really do it if you are a famous 'couple' from a drama. By no means does it mean they were saying that they were romantically involved. Like during DOTS, the 'songsong couple' (prior to them admitting they were a couple) was very famous and thats how media and even some award shows would refer to the. So for HB and SYJ, they are the "Riri Couple". I'm hoping Baeksang is not their last award show together but their both just such big superstars. It will be a gift for the award show if they can have the both of them attend. They were the most talked & searched about (despite just winning the popularity award) Baeksang topic in both korea and worldwide beating out those who won multiple awards. HAHA.
  6. While I'm happy they won the popularity award, I am disappointed because I feel like CLOY deserved so much more. This is an unbiased opinion. I've been watching K-DRAMAS for a long time and yes I acknowledge the impact of When the Camelia Blooms in their country because of what the show was about. It was a heartwarming show. But seriously, CLOY deserved to win more than ONE MAJOR AWARD out of it's SEVEN NOMINATIONS. It's not as if the show was all fluff. It was a critically praised show BOTH IN KOREA AND THE WHOLE WORLD. BOTH I REPEAT. For how it presented North Korea, the acting, writing, directing PLUS reviving interest in korean shows. It's just so hard to reconcile that shows like My love from the Stars, Descendants of the Sun and Goblin were all recipients of Daesang yet CLOY wasn't. CLOY wasn't well loved in western countries which korean drama hasn't penetrated til CLOY for no reason. It was well received because it was HIGH QUALITY WORK. The fact that it only won 1 major award is CRAZY given it's impact not only in korea but worldwide. WTCB: 4/8 awards CLOY : 1/7 awards TWOTM: 2/4 Sorry but CLOY deserved more than just best supporting actress. If they didn't feel like it deserved daesang, then how could they not pick it for BEST DRAMA at the very least.I know you guys says just be happy but just like US awards shows, there are times when shows or films are robbed and this is 1 prime example. It feels like how LEONARDO DICAPRIO was nominated for a bajillion times but never really won until The Revenant in 2015. That's how it feels. And I think it's perfectly fine to feel this way.
  7. No, winning the popularity award does not affect the merit based awards by baeksang. They just have a tendency to spread it out among their legitimate awards. Also i'm sure since it's usually a panel of well respected 7 individuals who wote, they are done voting by now. Usually the ones who win popularity awards are idols followed by HUGE hallyu stars since they have the more passionate fanbase (esp those of younger actors/actresses). If you noticed, when an idol is nominated for the popular awards, it most often goes to them. For this year, I automatically assumed IU was winning the popular award. HB on the other hand has had 2 MEGA HITS prior to CLOY being Kim Sam Soon and Secret Garden, so I wasn't that surprised he beat out the other idol. For SYJ it's a different story though cause IU's fanbase is HUGE. The idol HB was up against isn't as big as IU. Nonetheless, it is not easy to beat KPOP fans because are one of the most organized and intensely passionate in the world. The fact that they both beat idols is a feat in itself! I feel like SYJ will be surprised once she finds out she topped the popular votes. Even I am stunned considering how famous IU is. Goes to show the power of CLOY fans!
  8. Maybe I should just condition myself in thinking the only awards SYJ and HB will be taking home are the popularity awards + screenplay so I don’t get disappointed. hahaha. I’ll just believe KHA wins daesang, someone else wins best actor and actress so that in the event they win, I’ll be over the moon. Hahahahaha.
  9. I've never watched a korean awards show. I usually watch the Oscars, Golden Globes, The grammys, and AMAs but this will surely be the first korean show i'll be watching. I'm so excited though that we finally can! Hopefully in the years to come, there will be subtitles or some english so we can understand it more. haha.
  10. Agree with you guys on WTCB @yejinatic1981 @shpectator, it really left a huge impact in the hearts of south koreans because it was realistic and like what we all said, it tackled social issues and cultural undertones that we foreign viewers may not understand as much. If you look at the trends for what they pick for best drama, they really tend to go for these kind of heart warming, realistic shows. - 2019: My Mister- It's a show about the unsuccesful regular koreans + it tackled depression, failure and was ultimately healing in the end. No romance but mainly 2 people who are the most pitiful in the planet from different social classes but find solace and healing in each other. It was somewhat heavy at times but really good at least for me. I don't think it's for everyone though. - 2018: Mother- a teacher who realizes one of her students is being abused - 2017: Dear my friends- most of the cast are old actors and it's about the last years of life of these friends When The Camelia Blooms really fits when you think of the kind of shows they go for Best Drama. With regards to IU, she was amazing in Hotel Del Luna. I don't think she'll win though cause she's a junior in terms of acting. Seniority is big deal in Korea. More than that though, everyone else gave really strong performances. Perhaps if this were another year and she wasn't up against these legends then she would stand a better chance. I just cant imagine her winning against them despite how good her acting was and how different her character was. In fact, her character in hotel del luna is one of my favorite female characters (along with yoon se ri) in recent years.
  11. Hi guys! I’ve been a SYJ fan since 2010 and am so happy that so many people appreciate her now. She’s had runaway success in Film but her TV work hasn’t matched her film success until CLOY. I first saw Hyun Bin in Worlds Within with Song Hye Kyo (not one of his famous ones) and i really like him there. Both their acting and chemistry was was really good. When I both found out that HB and SYJ would star in CLOY, my heart was so happy cause my favorite actors in korea were finally doing a TV project together. Regarding Baeksang Awards, I’ve studied it and looked at the trends. I don’t think Kim Hee Ae will win Daesang as someone previously mentioned. What I learned about Baeksang: 1) They distribute awards (As you guys know) and it’s uncommon for a show to win a lot in major categories. Take last year for example, Sky Castle won 4/9 awards (mostly for acting) which is considered a lot but it didn’t bag the daesang or best drama (despite it being the highest rated show ever in cable at the time). Mr sunshine also had 9 noms but only took home 1 award. 2) No one has ever won the DAESANG without the show being nominated for BEST DRAMA (unless the winner was from a variety show). You guys can look it up. All the actors and actresses (and even the writer) who won the daesang belonged to shows whose work was nom for best drama. This is precisely why I’m convinced Kim Hee Ae won’t win Daesang. The world of the married only garnered 4 nominations this year and best drama wasn’t included. 3) They don’t use ratings as the standard for handing out awards. Take Goblin and DOTS for example- both were international hits, revived hallyu, multiple noms in Baeksang including for acting but Goblin only won 2 awards while DOTS won 1-2 (not including the popularity award). Sky Castle despite it being the highest rated cable TV show at the time didn’t bag best drama. So it’s not about ratings for these judges. Take note however that both Goblin and DOTS won the Daesang (so we have a good chance). My predictions: Recap: Most nominations is When Camelia Blooms followed by CLOY DAESANG: 1) CLOY: Park Ji Eun (writer) I actually think she has a good chance of winning this. For Goblin, it was also the writer who won. As you guys noticed, in as much as the entire cast was stellar, the writing was heavily praised. The screenplay was so well done she made us all fall in love with side characters as well. Critics said it was the best depiction of NK that SK has made because it made NK relatable. Interest in NK was also one of the reasons people were drawn to the show. Park Ji Eun also was given a “Person of the Year” award recently by one of the govt agencies. 2) CLOY: Son Ye Jin Okay so I really want her to win Daesang. She has never won a daesang in Baeksang and I think it’s about time they give this woman what she deserves. It’s just that the competition is so tough this year. Since they like distributing awards, I’m hoping they give SYJ Daesang while Kim Hee Ae Best Actress. -Kim Hye Ja (best and most respected actress of Korea... she’s old already): 4 Daesangs, her latest being last year -Kim Hee Ae: 2 Daesangs. it will be corny if she gets the daesang again this year tbh. -Jun Ji Hyun: 1 Daesang (My Love From The Stars) Even Jun Ji Hyun has 1 and I personally think SYJs character has more depth than Jun Ji Hyun’s fro my love from the stars or even Kim Hee Ae’s. As Yoon Seri, there was so much versatility. She had to make us laugh, make us cry, break our hearts and even gave a bit of action. There was a little bit of everything in Yoon Seri. BEST ACTRESS - Since this is the most competitive category this year, I really hope they distribute the awards. haha. Kim Hee Ae for Best Actress and SYJ for Daesang please. -To be honest though, this is such a hard one to predict. It’s like all the veteran multi-awarded actresses of Korea (apart from IU) decided to release shows in the same award season. Hahahaha. I’ve never seen a category this stacked in awhile. a) Kim Hee Ae (TV): 54 years old - She’s had a prolific career in TV and is known as one of the best TV actresses of Korea. She was the heart of TWOTM. What’s amazing about her is that she’s had TV hits every decade. Btw, TWOTM is the highest rated cable TV show in Korea (28%, even for non cable 28% is exceptionally high nowadays) but it didn't get as many nominations in Baeksang ( 3 acting noms and 1 for Best Director). She is very well known in Korea, not internationally. b) Kim Hye Soo (TV and Film): 49 years old -One of the most awarded korean actresses and has both a successful TV and FILM career. She is indeed known as one of the most respected actresses of Korea. Like SYJ, she draws a lot of people to watch Korean movies. I don’t think she’ll win for Hyena but she’s like Son Ye Jin who gets nominated almost every year for their films and TV. Hahaha. She’s HUGE in SK but not internationally. -Recommending Signal if you haven't seen it yet. c) Gong Hyo Jin (TV): 40 years old - She’s really famous for her TV work esp in Rom Coms. She’s had a string of TV hits with WTCB being the latest. I watched her there and the way she played a single mom plus her character transformation was commendable -She’s very versatile and also multi awarded but is really more famous for her TV work. She does film too and indie stuff. What I like about her is she doesn’t stick to playing 1 type of character. In 1 interview, she even admits that she can’t keep up with the number of awards SYJ has. Haha. -She’s Hallyu level since she’s had a lot of hit K Drama’s d) Son Ye Jin (TV and Film): 38 years old -Where do I even begin. Haha. As you guys know, SYJ does more films than TV and she is known more for her film. Like Kim Hye Soo, she’s able to draw people to watch movies and is regarded as one of the best and most awarded actresses in Korea. -Difference with Kim Hye Soo was that SYJ achieved Hallyu success in the early 2000s with the Classic, A moment to Remember and April Snow. Prior to CLOY, she got recognition again for SITR in Asia cause SITR was a mid level hit and was on netlfix. That’s how a number of international fans discovered her. Of course CLOY happened, and now she’s not just known in Asia but GLOBAL from the US to Europe to South America. How amazing is that?! - Fun Fact: She's close to doing a 2 peat of the triple awards in SK of Baeksang, Grandbell (film) and Blue Dragon (film). She's 1 Blue Dragon award away. - Grand Bell: 3 (2003 Best New Actres, 2014 & 2017 Best Actress) - Baeksang: 4 ( 2003 Best New Actress in film, 2008 & 2017 Best Actress in film, 2006 Best Actress in TV) - Blue Dragon: 1 (2008 Best Actress) e) Lee Ji Eun aka IU: 27 years old -She’s kind of like the “Taylor Swift of South Korea” in terms of popularity as a singer there because she writes and produces her own music. Her face is literally everywhere in Korea and has fans from all generations. In a group dominated music industry in Korea, she's HUGE as a soloist and has the most number of NUMBER 1 HITS in their charts beating out even the most popular groups. Unlike BTS or Blackpink which has a western market, her main market is SK but she’s also huge in China and other asian countries. -In general, Korean idol-actors are looked down upon because they don't act well and that's what i thought of her initial work as an actress. It changed though when I saw her in My Mister (2018). She may be a veteran in music but has only started to gain recognition as a good actress since 2018. Her success in Hotel Del Luna (2019) further increased her popularity in Asia. Now she's very in demand as both a singer and an actress which is very hard to achieve in South Korea. Usually, the singers who make it big in acting focus on their acting careers instead (ex. Suzy from Vagabond, Yoona from K2, Kwon Nara from Itaewon and Hyeri from Reply 1988). -For me, she carried Hotel Del luna. Her character was not your stereotypical female who follows the male lead in K-Dramas. She was outstanding and equally deserving of a nomination. I think she’s one of the most promising actresses of the younger gen and am amazed that she has back to back nominations for best actress at Baeksang. If I were to rank the performances in their dramas. Who I think will win Best Actress: Kim Hee Ae SYJ= Kim Hee Ae IU (I was really impressed with her portrayal character) Kim Hye Soo Gong Hyo Jin BEST ACTOR -I think it’s between Park Seo Jeon (Itaewon) vs Hyun Bin vs Jun Ji Hyun from Hyena (Kingdom was also nominated, so if they give it to him, it’s like acknowledging him for both roles already). Though my heart screams HYUN BIN, PSJ really gave a strong performance. I have a feeling that if SYJ wins Daesang, then they will lean to a non CLOY actor to distribute the awards. Hyun Bin has won a Daesang for Secret Garden btw BEST DRAMA: -If someone from CLOY wins Daesang, they definitely won’t get BEST DRAMA. That's just how it works in Baeksang. -I think this will go to When The Camelia Blooms because it touched on sensitive topics like being a single mom who runs a bar, social prejudice etc etc. This is why the show was huge there... so many societal issues were tackled which is uncommon in a SK drama. Last year they gave it to MY MISTER (highly recommend) which was a “life drama” and really meant a lot to so many Koreans. So following that logic and if they give CLOY the Daesang, WTCB takes this home BEST SCREENPLAY -CLOY vs WTCBs but I hope they give it to Park Ji Eun of CLOY so Son Ye Jin wins Daesang. Haha. -Park Ji Eun is really deserving of this award because of the reasons I mentioned earlier. We really don’t know what will happen, though I hope they don’t just get 1-2 awards. CLOY is really one of the best if not the best in the ROMCOM-Melodrama genre of Korean TV. It really deserves recognition. It’s the FIRST KOREAN DRAMA to be famous WORLDWIDE (not just in Asia like other Hallyu shows Goblin, Dots, Reply etc ). It literally opened the eyes of NON K DRAMA FANS and was the CATALYST for non-asians to start watching KOREAN drama. Last FEW HOURS of voting guys! Please vote because the popularity award is what we can only ensure. Let’s give it to them cause they deserve it. We need to see them on stage and see them give a speech!
  12. Thank you! Yeah, that's precisely why they everyone thinks Kim Hee Ae will win Daesang (also because she's won 2) though based on Baeksang's history I don't think she will this year. Unless of course, the judges suddenly stray away from their usual patterns. haha. The judges did reward the Hallyu success of DOTS and Goblin by giving them the grand prize. I really hope the same happens for CLOY this year. TBH, who gets daesang kind of determines who wins the other top awards. haha. I really can't imagine TWOTB winning Daesang because that's the grandprize, and it totally makes sense that the winner comes from a show nominated for Best Drama and even screenplay. This I will say though, there are 3 people i think will be robbed if they go home without a major award: -Park ji eun, writer of CLOY -SYJ of CLOY -Kim Hee Ae of TWOTB I think these three are really deserving of top awards. So given that Baeksang likes distributing their awards and as it is, Best Actress is the most stacked and competitive, it makes sense that an actress wins Daesang. For reasons I mentioned earlier, and as good as TWOTB it mostly garnered acting awards. Mind you during Goblin's time, i also couldn't imagine Gong Yoo going home empty handed and same for it's writer. Gong Yoo went home with best Actor while the writer won daesang. So based on Baeksang's trend of awarding daesang to shows who also got nominated for best drama (i think this implies that the show as a whole was superb from all aspects), it may turn out like this: BEST ACTRESS: Kim Hee Ae BEST ACTOR: PSJ or KHN or JJH BEST DRAMA: WTCB BEST SCREENPLAY: CLOY WRITER DAESANG: SYJ
  13. Hi guys! I’ve been a SYJ fan since 2010 and am so happy that so many people appreciate her now. She’s had runaway success in Film but her TV work hasn’t matched her film success until CLOY. First saw her in April snow and was so amazed at how she could convey so much emotion without saying much. I was waiting for the day that people would see how amazing of an actress she was (international fans watch K-Dramas more) and I’m so happy SITR happened followed by CLOY. SITR made her known to the newer fans of k-dramas because people dont watch SK films as much. Of course CLOY happened and her fame internationally at least has sky rocketed. It's kind of like her fame during her Hallyu days in the early 2000s but 50 times more! haha. I really think she’s one of the best actresses Korea has to offer. I first saw Hyun Bin in Worlds Within with Song Hye Kyo (not one of his famous ones) and i really like him there. Both their acting and chemistry was was really good. If I were to rank the performances in their dramas SYJ= Kim Hee Ae IU (I was really impressed with her portrayal character) Kim Hye Soo Gong Hyo Jin BEST ACTOR -I think it’s between Park Seo Jeon (Itaewon) vs Hyun Bin vs Jun Ji Hyun from Hyena (Kingdom was also nominated, so if they give it to him, it’s like acknowledging him for both roles already). Though my heart screams HYUN BIN.
  14. It will be more surprising if they don’t attend. It’s such a prestigious award giving body in Korea that the nominees usually attend. Also CLOY has the 2nd most nominations in TV.
