Hi all, new to the forum but I've lurked here for awhile. Since we don't have new episodes this week, and it's put my mind into overdrive when rewatching the show, I just wanted to post some of my thoughts (might be a tad academic, so my apologies!) on what it says about modern societies.

Someone said awhile ago that it was interesting that SR was happier in North Korea than in South Korea, and she's surprised to find out how much so in episode 10. But I think it makes perfect sense, and here's why.

While the show glosses over a lot of bad things about North Korea - for example, the soldiers are not starving, stealing food, or dying of parasitic infections, which is common in NK - they get one thing right about how North Korea is superior to the South. It was very interesting that the ladies were constantly baffled at how SR at first did not want to join in with all the group activities. She wasn't interested in making kimchi, going to a birthday party, and they had to drag her out shopping with them. That's because where SR is from, she doesn't have a community and is used to going it alone. She can't trust her family and has no real friends at work. Medically speaking, loneliness is more deadly than smoking. As a social species, humans have had to rely on cooperation for survival, and we are masters at it. Think money, traffic, waiting in line - what other species can cooperate at such a sophisticated level? The loneliness  and resultant depression when we do not have community are emergency signals to us telling us we need to "find our people" so we can survive, since going it alone is deadly.

Being in South Korea, with relative prosperity much more reliable and the need to rely on the community for survival significantly diminished, SR struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts, even going to Switzerland to end it all, which was absolutely heartbreaking. In NK, where cooperation + community = survival, she suddenly had a solid community around her. The military wives, the ducklings, RJH, all suddenly made her feel like she was part of something. What happened immediately after it looked like RJH had played her by having a second fiancee? The ahjummas stormed in late at night with beer and lots and lots of sympathy, refusing to take no for an answer, and you could tell SR was moved by how much they cared. That would not have happened for her in South Korea. The ducklings had a picnic for her to celebrate their time together and send her off, and even the man who didn't get along with her well was there to support her and acknowledge her. She might have been more important in South Korea, but she didn't feel like she mattered. In North Korea, she felt needed and wanted on a human level, for probably the first time in her life. This is consistent with what I've read about North Korean defectors - a lot of them complain that South Korea is incredibly isolating and competitive. I like how the writer and production team are talking about this reality.

I think the show is talking about sleep, loneliness, and depression on purpose because in episode 10 they matched it up with science. Studies have shown that those who sleep alone do not sleep as soundly as those who live with others. (I hope it's ok to post the link on this) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22043123

Ever notice how, through most of the time in NK, SR slept pretty soundly despite being under constant threat? She knew RJH was there, she knew she had the ducklings and ahjummas, and she slept better. Fast forward to Seoul, and she's emptying the bottle of sleep medication in order to get shut-eye, and still not doing well, since she's all alone in her glamorous apartment with no threat of imprisonment, running hot water, and reliable power; yet she seems to have preferred a smaller, less advanced but shared, living accommodation.  This is consistent with scientific research - our need for community is so deep that if we do not have it, it affects our sleeping patterns. The fact that the production team included this makes me wonder whether they are really trying to talk about loneliness and isolation in South Korea (and modern society in general) and how it affects health. I'm curious whether the ducklings or RJH will bring anything about it up in future episodes.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I'm loving the show. This and Vagabond have been the best Korean dramas I have seen in a long time. Currently watching Hotel del Luna to try to fill in the gap - but still find myself rewatching CRoY a lot, and waiting for next week. February 1, come quickly!

  2. yes true, vast does not issue a statement that is related to rumors of marriage and rumors of breaking up both. But I mean here, there are some media that give the wrong title (for example in my country) so that the haters commented a lot on that posting.the post is in IG, and I have read it, there are lots of negative comments there. If I could post here the IG account name.Honestly I read the negative comments, want to shout and get angry at the admin who posted it.

All I can do is give lots of love to the BINJIN couple. FIGHTING!

Let be rational here. Why would Vast puts this out against Yejin who is currently doing a project with him? Even if he's disturbed by her (which I highly doubt because they are close friends as they claimed), he wouldn't be warning her at this time. He would wait until their drama is completed before taking any action against her. What kind of child-like thinking is this? :rage:

Vast entertainment must immediately explain it. As soon as possible, for what purpose the legal route is taken. They must act, otherwise this will greatly benefit the haters. Why did the media give the wrong title ???I really love the Binjin couple. They have worked hard in cold weather, but they get very painful things like this.I wanted to scream and be angry at the haters. FIGHTING BINJIN!

Right you said my word @seolhyunarii

Can that news we categorized as malicious information? If yea I'll send those link to VAST.

How come a big Kmedia online give a wrong title.

Wrong title from the media, brings another impact. Haters appear to attack Son YeJin. The haters say bad things about Son Yejin. They said that Hyunbin was disturbed by his relationship with Son Yejin, therefore HyunBin would report to the authorities for people who spread the news of his date with Son Yejin. They also said, Sonyejin was the one who had been pursuing HyunBin's love. We, the shipper Binjin, were said to be hallucinating. Therefore, there was a need for news alignment from vast entertainment for this matter.

Sorry, I do not agree with you. Our BinJin couple will not do anything low (there are rumors of marriage) to make the drama rating rise.Binjin will not use their personal lives to be highlighted just to make people interested in this drama. This drama is always awaited by everyone and always gets a high rating, even from the episode 1 screening, all thanks to their efforts and hard work and all the drama support teams.Let's appreciate their hard work and professionalism to provide a very good drama. Even in extreme weather, they are still shooting this drama.

Hi! new to this thread, a fan of HB (since Kim sam soon), SYJ (since The Classics) and on-and-off Kdrama fan.

I've watch some of HB's  and SYJ's dramas/movies but I never joined their ships until this drama came along... I'm really trying hard to remind myself to be rational and that everything HB and SYJ do are nothing but Fan service:sweatingbullets:..... but I still can't help and lurk at this thread to find an outlet for my shipping....:sweatingbullets::lol:

From all the youtube videos, interviews I've read and backlogging this thread and facebook pages, I think SYJ pique HB's interest during The Negotiation movie when she acted out scenes differently from what HB had expected and cut her hair to fit her role when she was already committed to another melodrama right after their movie. They maybe (I don't know them personally so wrote "maybe") became comfortable with each other during their promotions for the movie and "maybe" became good friends after they started shooting this drama. I did not believe the marriage rumor because the first thing that came to my mind when i first saw the news was, maybe this is just another tactic to boost people's interest same as when Gong Yoo marriage rumor came out but it was actually for his new movie.  As for the break-up, I don't think it's true either because it would be so awkward for them and the whole crew, but then... they are so professional sometimes in their BTS that i think there's no truth to this ship at all....:lol: (yes, that's me sinking my own shipping dream) I'd say, let them finish this drama in peace, let them learn more about each other as a person and flirt/tease each other (on and off cam) all their way till the ending of this drama and whatever interview that may come their way. I will surely enjoy every bits and pieces of videos, pictures and shipper analysis for this ship till the end:wub:... Fighting BinJin shippers!!

the agency denied rumors that they would get married after the drama ended. Their rumors broke up and reconnecting again, were baseless rumors. Filming was stopped because the weather in Seoul Korea was very bad. Keep the spirit of Binjin Couple, please take care of your health.Fighting! We love and miss you :wub:BinJin
