  1. Dramabeans posted an Actor Spotlight on JJH:

    http://www.dramabeans.com/2019/03/actor-spotlight-joo-ji-hoon/

It seemed from reading between the lines that the writer hadn’t actually watched a lot of the listed projects as they kept  describing what the story “sounded like” rather than commenting knowledgeably. I know Dramabeans has had issues creating consistent content lately and maybe they just wanted to push out an article. However it was still a nice summary of JJH’s career highlights thus far and made me want to rewatch some things.

  2. Siwan, please promptly accept so that our eyes can be blessed with this combination of charisma and talent! :o

Really proud of him for receiving this offer. It seems from other sources he’ll likely play Suh Yun Bok, the first Asian winner of the Boston marathon and a world record holder at the time. The film sounds like a prestige project and really, HA JUNG WOO is all that needs to be said.

Going to rewatch that scene in Misaeng where Siwan runs up the hill!

  3. Just saw that one of JJH's upcoming movies has been invited to screen at the Cannes Film Festival! I believe it was previously titled Duke and also Operation, but now it seems to be titled The Spy Gone North. It's screening out of competition in the Midnight Screenings section (where Gong Yoo's Train to Busan and Sol Kyung Gu/Im Siwan's The Merciless were screened in previous years at Cannes).

I'm excited about this one because it also stars acting powerhouses Hwang Jung Min, Lee Sung Min, and Jo Jin Woong. Hopefully JJH will get to attend the festival with everyone. :)

“The Spy Gone North,” from filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin, is to be screened in the noncompetitive Midnight Screening section. The section features horror, action and other genre films.

“The Spy Gone North” (CJ Entertainment)

The plot, inspired by a true story, follows a South Korean spy who infiltrates the North to obtain intelligence on its nuclear weapons program in the 1990s. Featuring Hwang Jung-min, Lee Sung-min, Jo Jin-woong and Joo Ji-hoon, the film will hit local theaters this summer.

This is director Yoon’s second time to be invited to Cannes, following “The Unforgiven” in 2006.

The 71st Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 8 to 19 in the southern coastal city of Cannes in France.

  4. So happy about all the success of Along With the Gods! I was able to see it at a local theater in the US yesterday (well, we drove over half an hour each way to get there, but it was worth it!) and no spoilers -- I really enjoyed the movie! It's epic, and entertaining, and emotional, which are all the things I want out of a cinema experience. I'm not Korean, but I kind of feel a bit excited for the country for producing such a huge "Hollywood" CGI/effects-heavy movie series, if that makes any sense. I'm really looking forward to the sequel!

JJH was very good indeed although his character was a bit shallow IMO, but the role had him doing a lot of action and looking extremely handsome in his costume. Seeing him on the big screen made me realize all over again how TALL he is.

The movie was packed with Korean actors operating at the top of their game, so that was a treat as well. For me the highlights were: Ha Jung Woo, whose work I always love to watch; Cha Tae Hyun was excellent; and I also thought Do Kyungsoo did very well with his part. The little girl from Train to Busan had a super cute cameo type of role.

Here's a "behind the scenes" video from the Facebook of CGV:

*** Does it mean that ISW is fluent in English? I miss ISW - I hope time flies so fast that his discharge will be soon.....

His English is good enough that he can handle short interviews. This is from last year at KCon in New York:

And this is a cute one from ZE:A Five promotion in 2013 (skip to time 3:03):

By the way, Siwan came in 2nd in the popularity contest for the Seoul Awards, with fellow member Park Hyungsik in 1st (and co-star Yoona taking 1st for actresses). They’ve really come far since early ZE:A days!

  6. Thank you so much to everyone for posting so much Siwan news! I've been tracking his hash tags on Twitter and Instagram and it's just exploding thanks to this army festival and his new duet -- which I love, by the way! It's going on repeat. Happy to see such a great selection of images and videos here. It's hard to know where to look first, and that's awesome because I expected when he enlisted that we'd hardly see anything of him for months and months. :D

I want to ask you. What is the meaning of the writing above his name in his right chest, and the one at left in his left chest?

Is it the sign of his position as "Instructor Assistant"?

It looks like the hangul on his right side badge is 조교 which means "assistant to drill instructor" according to Naver's dictionary here.

On his left side badge, I remember that was circled in pictures when news reports surfaced of him receiving a "Special Warrior" commendation. It looks like the hangul is 특급 which means "special class" according to Naver's dictionary here.

I don't know if an article was ever posted here in the thread about him receiving that commendation, but you can read about it here. Basically, he excelled in many skills tests like shooting, physical strength, and combat, and it was quite notable for him to receive this in only two months. :)

Soompi also mentioned it when they shared his pictures rehearsing for the festival:

The special class soldier badge on the left side of his chest caught fans’ attention. Im Siwan achieved outstanding scores in all categories including shooting and strength and reached the status of a special class soldier in just two months after enlisting, which is highly unusual.

  7. Clearest photos of Siwan in uniform yet! https://www.facebook.com/armyfest2017/posts/1930970190524122

The full set of pictures include Joo Won and Super Junior's Ryeowook. The performance they're prepping for is for a 5-day army festival second week of October, so hopefully we can look forward to new pictures AND his duet being released around the same time. According to Allkpop it's about a man enlisting, so that's apropos.  https://www.allkpop.com/article/2017/09/soldier-siwan-to-collaborate-with-urban-zakapas-jo-hyun-ah-for-new-duet-release

I'm very glad that he looks healthy and happy, and that even though he's currently enlisted we've still had so much content from him.

Also, I'm not sure if this was previously posted already here but apologies if so. Actress Min Young Won went along with the TKL cast to visit Siwan and she shared a quick video and pic:

  8. Thanks so much for sharing the Along With the Gods teaser! So nice to finally see some footage from this project. I'm not sure I've ever seen so much CGI in a Korean movie -- makes me wonder about the production process and how much the budget was! But JJH looks really good and Ha Jung Woo is sexy as always.

I scouted around for Knetizen reactions using Google translate on Naver and Google News search results. It seems like many are disappointed that there are big plot and character changes from the original webtoon. Hope a big audience still shows up to buy tickets once the movie is released in December.

  9. I came running over as soon as I saw the Netflix news! I'm so excited for him being offered this high profile role and I really hope he can do it. I can imagine he might want a break after filming so many movies one after another but please, JJH, this would be such a great career move! Signal writer Kim Eun Hee is excellent and talented, and Netflix has so much money available for productions and of course massive international reach. Even for this to be offered to him makes me proud, especially after all of his recent public trouble.

Bae Doona is also considering the female lead and if there will be romance between their characters, I'm having trouble breathing imagining the hot chemistry they could create. :o Please let her accept too!

As I've said before, I'm very impressed at all the big co-stars JJH has started to associate with. Speaking of which, he was recently spotted hanging out with Ha Jung Woo so it's nice that they are keeping in touch after Along With The Gods finished filming. And I believe the director of this Netflix show also directed HJW's recent movie Tunnel (also with Bae Doona and a very very good movie) so perhaps he had some advice to give JJH about working with them. There is bonus Hyeri who ran into them and greeted them in the photos:

  10. JJH started filming another movie yesterday! According to his agency's Instagram it will be out early 2018. Based on Google translation of a news article about it, it seems like a very dark story -- he's playing a serial killer in prison who sends a detective on a hunt for more murders (played by Kim Yoon-seok). It sounds kind of like Silence of the Lambs, with JJH as a Hannibal Lecter type. :o

Kim Yoon-seok and Joo Ji-hoon star in the crime thriller movie "Homicide" (director Kim Tae-gyun).

According to the showbusters on the 16th, "The murder of the male and female" was confirmed in major casts such as Kim Yoon-seok and Joo Ji-hoon.

The film portrays the intense psychological confrontation between a detective and a murderer, confessing seven more murders that a murderer in prison has hidden.

The title 'murder of a male or female' means a murder case in which a victim is present and an incident has occurred but has not been reported and no body has been found so the investigation agency can not recognize it.

Kim Yoon-seok played the role of detective Kim Hyung-min, who explores the truth of hidden murders to the end.

Joo Ji-hoon confines the murder cases while being held in jail, and divides him into a serial killer Kang Ta-o Oh who seizes the detective.

The movie is scheduled to open next year.

  11. Actually, it's 3 movies because With God is split into Part 1 and Part 2. Both parts were filmed at the same time, but they will release Part 1 in December this year, then Part 2 in summer next year. Hollywood does this sometimes with multi-part movies filmed together, but this is apparently the first time it's been done in Korea. Filming took 10 months!

Because the cast is so massive with so many big names, and the story is from a popular webtoon, it will probably do very well at the box office. More info here: http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr/jsp/news/features.jsp?blbdComCd=601013&mode=FEATURES_VIEW&seq=367 (the last section)

For Duke, I don't know if a release date has been announced yet, but they only just finished filming, I think.

It seems like JJH almost immediately started filming Duke right after he finished filming With God for 10 months straight, so that's why he has not had a reason to be in the news (until the Ga In story). Promotion for these movies won't start until much closer to their release dates, and then hopefully we'll see JJH in interviews and red carpet. I'm interested to see how he gets along with his senior castmates. The Asura cast got along so well and they spoke very highly of JJH in interviews. I hope he did well in these new projects also.

  12. I have been following the Ga In story. I am concerned that she's not doing well mentally and I hope she's getting support from family or friends. Everything she's been posting on social media probably should have been kept private between her, JJH, this supposed drug pusher, and/or the police. She's getting a lot of negativity in comments on articles (both in English and what I have seen translated from Knetizens), which is no doubt messing with her emotions. I feel she needs to stop sharing so much with the public during this time when she herself admits that she's not stable.

As a JJH fan, I think it's a shame that this is all bringing up his past drug scandal again, after everything he's done to atone and rebuild his career. I thought he and Ga In made a cool couple, but I wouldn't blame him at all for breaking up with her right now. She's potentially damaged his reputation and undone years of effort to get in the public's good graces again. I guess I'm expecting an eventual confirmation from their agencies that they broke up, although I hope JJH himself will maintain a dignified silence because saying anything could bring more negative attention to himself.

(Now, I personally come from a liberal culture when it comes to certain drug use, so my main concern for that aspect of Ga In's allegations is that if there is any investigation of JJH due to the friend connection, I just hope he is found to be law-abiding.)

I'm glad that he finished filming With God already and it looks like he's very close to finishing filming Duke (based on the cinematographer's Instagram d.o.p_chan). So at least he has 2 high-profile projects still to arrive onscreen over the next year. But if he was interested in any new dramas, is it possible he'll have trouble getting parts now?

Hi jinjoint, I've watched "Medical Top Team" because of him & Kwon Sang Woo..... I like the cast and its very strong plot. The cast was full of great actors.  It was a pretty standard show, not bad but not great. But, I enjoyed it a lot. It remained a beautifully shot show with interesting angles, and realistic surgical scenes. The strongest part of the show was its medical aspect.

Thanks for the thoughts! I will try another episode this weekend. I did enjoy how realistic the medical stuff was, and it absolutely looks and feels like a glossy, well-made show. But it wasn't the kind of drama I could sit for hours and watch one episode after another, like with others I've loved. Maybe I can make it once a week similar to Western TV shows. At least it's not as painful as Five Fingers -- I just couldn't handle how ridiculously up and down that one was!

  14. Hello to anyone passing by this thread! I know it has been inactive lately but I only discovered JJH this year, so I thought I would come in to say a belated Happy Birthday to him and maybe meet some fellow fans. I've been looking for JJH fandom on Instagram and YouTube, but they're not the best places for expressing longer thoughts.

I know that many are hoping to see JJH in another drama, but I'm really intrigued and excited by his movie choices. He's been going for darker roles which I think have challenged him to do more with his acting skills and to be more "real" if you know what I mean.

Also, I don't know if the Korean movie industry is maybe more welcoming to JJH than the drama industry, but it seems like he enjoyed working on ASURA last year and made good connections with his older high-profile co-stars. The bromance he had with Jung Woo Sung during the movie promotion was so fun to watch. :D I'm hoping that his upcoming movies WITH GOD and DUKE have also given him a chance to act well with big name sunbaes. If only it didn't take so long for the movies to come out!

I'm also interested to know more about JJH as a person. He seems more distant and reserved now compared to before his military service, with very little action on social media or any websites. But I liked his Running Man episodes and the Infinite Challenge with the ASURA cast, as they showed his fun side. I'm going to watch what I can of his All of Me DVD on YouTube later out of curiosity although it almost feels like another era.

Where are other fans getting their JJH fixes these days?

Anyway, here's what I've watched out of his catalog:

Goong - twice! with lots of skipping through the non-JJH parts the second time, haha!

Mawang - not bad, but still felt very slow

Antique - loved it through and through!

Naked Kitchen - the actors and cinematography were all great, but the script/editing was too quirky

Five Fingers - honestly, I couldn't finish this as it was so over the top makjang

Medical Top Team - still trying to finish as it started getting boring

Confession - also loved this one, great all around

Mask - JJH was so endearing and I'm glad he has this in his filmography, but I had issues with the story

Treacherous - WOW, that was a crazy one, but I'm so impressed at JJH absolutely disappearing into his character

Asura - struggled through some poor English subtitles so I'm hoping it comes out on Netflix, but JJH was great in it

(I use KissAsian, DramaFever, Viki, and Netflix for most of my viewing.)
