  13. Rain offered new afterlife drama Goodbye My Beloved

    by girlfriday | November 3, 2015

    Rain1.jpg

I can’t say I’m all that excited about a Rain drama comeback after his last show (the oh-so-forgettable She’s So Lovable), but at least the drama itself sounds interesting, which means it could potentially wipe the slate and make us actually forget that She’s So Lovable ever happened. The new series is called Goodbye My Beloved, and it’s an adaptation of the Japanese novel Mr. Tsubakiyama’s Seven Days (Tsubakiyama Kacho no Nanokakan), which was also adapted into a movie of the same name in 2006.

The series is currently under consideration over at SBS, and comes from writer Noh Hye-young of the movies 200-Pound Beauty, How to Use a Guy With Secret Tips, and Singles, and PD Shin Yoon-sub of Rooftop Prince and Watch Out for Fools. The original is about a middle-aged department store manager who dies from overwork and stress, who asks the powers that be in the afterlife for a chance to complete some unfinished business. He gets to return to the land of the living for 7 days, during which he inhabits the body of a beautiful 30-year-old woman.

The warm human drama is about family ties, and of course life and death. It sounds pretty much like 49 Days crossed with Who Are You, where one last chance to observe your life from the outside gives you a whole new perspective. In the Korean drama adaptation, the main character will possess the body of another man instead of a woman, which cuts out the potential gender-bendy shenanigans.

Rain has been offered the leading role of the manager who inhabits another man’s body — or I guess technically he’ll play the body that gets possessed, though that’s not specified. It’s basically Oh My Ghostess with boys, isn’t it? The department store manager dies of overwork and comes back in the body of a pretty boy “elite” manager, and as a result his social status, outward appearance, and even personality will change.

In the original source material, there are two other characters that return for their own 7-day trip alongside the manager — a young boy who died in a traffic accident and a middle-aged yakuza boss who was murdered in a case of mistaken identity. The powers that be let them return in different bodies as long as they follow 3 strict rules: They can’t reveal their true identity, get revenge, or stay any longer than 7 days.

It makes me feel better knowing that there are rules in the novel, because I often watch these supernatural dramas feeling like they just make up rules as they go along and change them whenever it suits the next turn in the story. I like the concept a lot, despite the likelihood of tears shed — there’s a lot of heartfelt, laugh-out-loud comedy to be mined in these types of stories too, which I’m sure this PD-writer combo won’t be ignoring.

Goodbye My Beloved is being considered for a 2016 broadcast on SBS.

Rain in Talks for 2016 SBS Drama Goodbye My Beloved One

    rei.jpg

I wrote about this upcoming drama a month ago and really found the premise promising. SBS bought the rights to Japanese novel Tsubakiyama Kacho no Nanokakan (Director Tsubakiyama’s 7 Days Time) by writer Asada Jiro. There is already one onscreen adaptation of the novel, the J-movie of the same name in released in 2006, so it”ll be a nice change of cultural style and medium for SBS to turn it into a drama tentatively titled Goodbye My Beloved One. Even more exciting for me to hearing that Rain is in talks to headline, marking his first return to dramas in over a year since last year’s underwhelming My Lovely Girl.

Rain was sooooooo miscast and misused in that drama it wasn’t even funny, so picking the heartwarming Goodbye My Beloved One feels like a step in the right direction. The story centers around a workaholic department store employee who dies on the job but can’t let go of unfinished tasks. The powers that be give him three days back on earth to complete his lingering regrets, and his return to the living turns him from a middle aged man into a beautiful twenty something woman in the novel, but for the drama he’ll turn into super hottie Rain. Along the way he/she meet up with other recently deceased with the same three day option. Me likes the sound of this second chances and soul swapping stuff.

    reugfu.jpg

    rei1.jpg

The screenwriter adapting the novel into drama form also wrote the movie 200 Pounds Beauty, while directing will be veteran SBS PD Shin Yoon Sub behind Ugly Alert and Rooftop Prince. Since its airing on SBS, the drama can potentially follow Six Flying Dragons on Mon-Tues, or Remember on Wed-Thurs.

Rain unsure about starring in new SBS drama

    • Updated : November 04 2015

    image
    (OSEN)

Singer-actor Rain is mulling over the lead role in SBS’ upcoming drama “Hello My Love,” (working title), his agency Rain Company said Wednesday.

“We’ve got the drama’s synopsis, but no decision has been made yet,” said the label denying news reports earlier Wednesday that he is set to star in the drama. “The singer is currently busy preparing for his concert next month.”

Based on the Japanese novel “Mr. Tsubakiyama’s 7 Days,” the drama will revolve around an ordinary man who dies from overwork and later gets to be born again as a smart, good-looking man.

It has been revealed that entertainer Rain has been offered a role in the drama ‘Hello My Most Precious Person’ (working title), and is currently considering it.

Rain’s side said, “We have indeed received an offer, but nothing has been confirmed. Rain is currently busy with preparation work for his upcoming concert tour.”

The drama will be based on the Japanese novel ‘Tsubakiyama Kacho no Nanokakan’ by Jiro Asada, and tells the story of a department store manager who dies from stress and overwork but returns to life for 3 days only. If Rain does sign on, he is likely to take on the role of the good looking department store manager.

Rain will begin his concert tour starting with Changsha in Hunan on November 7th.

Ilgan Sports - Naver: Kim Tae Hee "Jeju trip with Rain? You're rubbing salt into the wounds"

    1. [+8,064, -261] Rubbing salt into the wound ㅋㅋㅋㄱㅋㅋㅋㅋ Kim Tae Hee is cute

    2. [+8,004, -349] Kim Tae Hee seems like the honest type ㅋㅋㅋ She's blunt and unpretentious in her interviews. She gives off an easygoing and comfortable vibe compared to Jeon Ji Hyun who answers by the textbook.. Unless her interviews are with Ha Jung Woo, she's quite robotic

    3. [+5,979, -844] She's really pretty but you can tell that she has aged

    4. [+3,909, -152] Just the questions you'd expect a journalist to ask. They're responsible for spreading false news and creating antis. They need to reflect

    5. [+4,035, -649] Seems like it was only yesterday when she starred in 'Stairway to Heaven'. Kim Tae Hee who was once the most beautiful Korean actress has also aged..

    6. [+1,348, -39] I never knew she has such a fresh personality ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ She struck me as quiet and serious but she's surprisingly wise

    7. [+606, -41] She's got a pretty face with a sassy personality to boot. Definitely someone to look up  to ㅠㅠㅠ

    8. [+568, -37] How would they even go on a trip to Jeju when all eyes are on them? Spending time at their luxurious housed would be a lot better... I like at-home dates than going out

The 2015 Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards were hosted by the Korean government to honor stars for their contributions to promoting Korean culture both domestically and abroad. 29 celebrities received awards during the event that was held on October 29 at the National Theater of Korea.

Great news for Pinocchio fans! Both Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye were awarded the Prime Minister's Award for their contributions as actors. In addition, IUKim Jong Kook, and JYJ members YoochunJaejoong, Junsu also received the same award for their success as musicians and entertainers.

    Don't they all look great?

JYJ's appearance was extra special because this marked the first time all three members have been together since Jaejoong enlisted in the army in March of this year. Yoochun is also currently serving in the military, but both were able to get permission to attend the event. It's great to see them all together again!

  22. [Funcurve Review] "Pinocchio"

    2015/10/31

    Source:Hancinema

    photo648723.jpg

    Lie Detectors

"Pinocchio"'s got all the right ingredients for a promising Korean drama: a novel disorder that can naturally create conflicts, a cast of eye-candy actors who can actually act, and a classic revenge theme. At first glance, the drama seems to be centered around answering one key question that we're all dying to know: can someone with Pinocchio Syndrome (telling lies causes hiccups) live normally in a world where deception is common? But to my pleasant surprise, "Pinocchio" contains far more depth than I had ever hoped for. It explores the tragic consequences of fabricating facts and serves as a sounding alarm to remind us not to be ignorant of the truth. The real question "Pinocchio" aims to answer is one asked by the main hero Gi Ha-myeong: "if it's a lie that can fool the entire world, can it be turned into the truth?" Through the eyes of our rookie reporters, we are taken along a thrilling journey in separating fact from fiction.

"Pinocchio" contains far more depth than I had ever hoped for.

What's even more impressive is that the journey is a well planned one. "Pinocchio"'s story development and sequence of events are meticulously thought-through. Each of the plot segments serves as a building block leading into the next one so it never feels like any episode is a meaningless filler or an afterthought. "Pinocchio"'s characters, including many of the supporting ones, are equally well-written and non-conventional. With such great pacing, killer story, and charming character chemistry, I was wholly absorbed in the drama, unable to peel my eyes away even for a second.

    Screen 1

    Funcurve

    Episodes 1-3 Review feel4.png

The prologue of "Pinocchio" has one job: setting up the main storyline and character relationships. And it's a job well-done in successfully captivating my interest to find out more about these characters' future developments. But first, let's meet our heroes and learn about their backstories, in three different time lapses.

    Screen 2Screen 3

In the year 2000, Gi Ha-myeong (Lee Jong-suk) is a bright young boy who lives happily with his family consisting of a respectable firefighter dad, a loving stay-at-home mom, and an equally intelligent older brother, Gi Jae-myeong (Yoon Gyoon-sang). But I was sad to see that tragedy soon finds itself at his door. While trying to rescue survivors in a factory explosion, Ha-myeong's dad went missing. The media, led by a sensationalist reporter, Song Cha-ok (Jin Kyeong), heartlessly blamed Ha-myeong's dad for leading his men to die and evading responsibilities. Not able to cope with the finger-pointing, Ha-myeong's mom brings him along to commit suicide.

    Screen 4Screen 5

To my relief, Ha-myeong gets rescued by main heroine Choi In-ha's (Park Shin-hye) grandpa, who mistakenly thinks Ha-myeong is his long lost elder son Choi Dal-po. Thereafter, Ha-myeong lives in disguise as country bumpkin Dal-po. He quickly builds a close friendship with his similar aged "niece" In-ha, who is a cute straight-shooter with Pinocchio Syndrome and hiccups whenever she lies. Just then, we're presented with a startling discovery that In-ha's mom is none other than reporter Song - the woman who ruined Ha-myeong's family.

    Screen 6

    Screen 7Screen 8

Fast forward five years to 2005, I'm pleased to see a hint of sweet romantic interest between our leads. Teenage Dal-po bickers with In-ha constantly but is secretly very protective of her. In-ha also seems to genuinely care about Dal-po and defends his credibility in front of other classmates. But while Dal-po is aware of his feelings, In-ha remains clueless of her own heart.

    Screen 9Screen 10

The lovable yet sassy In-ha is a welcomed departure from Park Shin-hye's usual roles.

Another eight years later in 2013, grown-up In-ha tries to become a reporter. But her dream is ruthlessly crushed by her mom who claims a Pinocchio who can't lie could never be a reporter. Seeing In-ha so devastated, Dal-po decides to become a reporter himself to prove reporter Song wrong and to reveal the truth behind his dad's case. With the complicated backstories and relationships all set up, "Pinocchio" becomes more enticing than ever. Adding to the appeal of the drama is the amazing performance by Park Shin-hye in portraying the lovable yet sassy In-ha, a rare but much welcomed departure from her usual roles.

    Screen 11Screen 12

    Episodes 4-7 Review feel5.png

With In-ha and Ha-myeong both aiming to become reporters, "Pinocchio" officially enters the second stage. In this important arc of the drama, the storyline grows on three exciting fronts: experiencing what it means to be a reporter, learning how to love, and sowing the seed of revenge. Along the way, there are many delightful moments like meeting quirky new colleagues, reuniting with trustworthy old friends, and finally getting rid of Dal-po's hickish looks.

    Screen 13

With effort and a bit of luck, In-ha and Dal-po become intern reporters at rival news networks MSC and YGN respectively. On their new jobs, they meet their wacky partners Seo Beom-jo (Kim Yeong-kwang) and Yoon Yoo-rae (Lee Yoo-bi). It turns out that Beom-jo is a second generation chaebol who grew interested in In-ha after inadvertently stalking her text messages. He became a reporter purely to meet In-ha. On the other hand, Yoo-rae is an adorable oddball who uses her fangirl skills to spy, pry, and collect news. She gets assigned to be partners with Dal-po to compete for the same story that In-ha and Beom-jo are after. Very quickly, they learn how tough the job is while staking out at the police station to beg, steal, and eavesdrop on story leads while living like bums. The only ray of hope for Dal-po and In-ha is getting case intels from their old classmate Ahn Chan-soo (Lee Joo-seung), who is a detective at the same station. The drama's comic yet convincing portrayal of reporters' difficult lives gives me newfound respect for this profession. It's also refreshing to see Beom-jo as a totally non-cliche chaebol character without ego, arrogance, and constantly throwing money around.

    Screen 14Screen 15

    Screen 16Screen 17

Meanwhile, through Beom-jo's prying, In-ha finally recognizes that she has romantic interest towards Dal-po. She couldn't get rid of the hiccups from denying her feelings until she mustered up courage to confess to Dal-po. But not realizing Dal-po's heart, she tells him to ignore her feelings and begins to avoid him out of awkwardness. It's gratifying to see the love tension building towards a boiling point as they try to refrain from their feelings for each other to avoid compromising their familial relationship. And the eventual outbreak of their emotions does not disappoint as Dal-po passionately hugs In-ha after spending the night attending to her sickness.

    Screen 18Screen 19

Developing in parallel of the heart-melting romance is the chilling revenge planned by Ha-myeong's brother Jae-myeong. He carefully carries out his plans and gets rid of the people involved in his dad's case one by one. Dal-po traces a missing person case that Chan-soo's been keeping his eyes on, which leads him to meet Jae-myeong. As Dal-po shakes Jae-myeong's hands in the final scene of episode seven, I too share his fear in finding out what he's about to uncover.

    Screen 20Screen 21

    Episodes 8-11 Review feel5.png

With Dal-po and In-ha's loveline established so early on, I start to dread that "Pinocchio" will fill the remaining 12 episodes by slowly dragging things on. But it quickly proves my worry unnecessary. As Dal-po continues to dig into the case involving Jae-myeong's revenge, the intensity of the drama is pushed to greater heights, culminating into a new era I call "the return of Gi Ha-myeong".

    Screen 22

Coming off of the previous arc, "Pinocchio" continues to amplify the ominous atmosphere surrounding Jae-myeong with great scripting and excellent acting. In a surprising turn of events, In-ha's team accidentally captures Jae-myeong saving a little boy from being run over by a truck. MSC News makes it a top story, turning Jae-myeong into a national hero. Jae-myeong uses this perfect opportunity to his advantage. He agrees to an exclusive interview with reporter Song with the goal of carrying out the final step of his revenge plan.

    Screen 23

Meanwhile, in researching Jae-myeong's background through news clips from 13 years ago, In-ha inadvertently finds out about Dal-po's true identity and his relationship with Jae-myeong. She is shocked to see her mom's cruelty towards the Gi family. Upon overhearing In-ha's detailed recount of the incident from 13 years ago, Jae-myeong creepily stalks her to question why she knows so much. In an intense, nerve-wracking scene that had me holding my breath, Dal-po comes to In-ha's rescue and finally reveals his identity to Jae-myeong.

    Screen 24Screen 25

Soon after reuniting, Dal-po is devastated to confirm his suspicions of what Jae-myeong's been up to. He spends the rest of his time convincing Jae-myeong to stop his extreme revenge plans and agonizes over whether he should expose the truth. Dal-po's pain and desperation is clearly felt by anyone watching the drama. Ultimately, Dal-po chooses the path less traveled. But he commits to Jae-myeong that he will resume the revenge - by showing reporter Song what it means to be a real reporter. And so, with an unexpected twist and a newfound mission, "Pinocchio" enters an exciting new chapter - the debut of reporter Gi Ha-myeong.

    Screen 26Screen 27

    Screen 28

    Episodes 12-15 Review feel4.png

The pacing and intensity of "Pinocchio" calms down quite a bit after Jae-myeong's case wraps up. Nonetheless, new conflicts in the making are keeping things interesting for me. Ha-myeong officially enters war with reporter Song while a bigger conspiracy gradually surfaces to the top. Entertaining supporting characters also make it easy to forgive the slower progress on key plot developments.

The introduction of a deeper conspiracy is unexpected and thrilling at the same time.

Reporter Song's manipulative approach towards news is made known to the public through Jae-myeong's case and her reputation rapidly deteriorates. Ha-myeong gets wind of a defamation case against her and frantically collects evidence in attempt to bring her down even further. But when things didn't go as he had hoped for, Ha-myeong faces the tough choice of personal vendetta versus divulging the truth yet again. Just when I feared he would make the wrong decision, I was gladly proven wrong.

    Screen 29

Shortly after, another factory explosion takes place and once again, reporter Song changes the flow of the story by directing the blame towards Chan-soo. The more our rookie reporters dig into it, the more they realize that the progress of events is shockingly similar to Ha-myeong's dad's case. It's almost as if someone behind a curtain is directing the same play, act by act. The introduction of a deeper conspiracy and a hidden culprit is unexpected and thrilling at the same time. It paves the perfect path leading towards the final showdown.

    Screen 30Screen 31

    Episodes 16-20 Review feel4.png

The last stage of "Pinocchio" regains much of the tension from earlier episodes as our heroes battle to expose the truth. The key factor keeping me entertained is not so much in answering the question of "who", as that becomes clear rather quickly, but in the mind games used to unmask the slippery culprit.

Through their relentless efforts, Ha-myeong obtains proof exonerating Chan-soo and clears his name. Meanwhile, In-ha and Beom-jo uncover critical evidence that lead them right to the mastermind who's been directing reporter Song like a puppet since 13 years ago. Yet each time our reporters try to go public with the story, their efforts are blocked and diverted - even their lives are threatened. For me, this resulted in countless fist-clenching and facepalming moments.

    Screen 32Screen 33

Eventually, "Pinocchio"'s writers devised a rather surprising method to help our reporters expose the culprit, certainly one that I did not expect. At the end of the adventure, it's a relief to see the wall of lies crumbling down and the truth hidden behind come to light. As Ha-myeong puts it: "The truth is ten times more comforting than a lie".
