  1. Korean dramas escape to fantasy

While K-dramas are known for their far-fetched plot twists, they look set to take the bizarre to a new level this winter. Delving into the fantasy genre, Korean television is offering two hotly anticipated dramas featuring supernatural creatures -- a mermaid and a goblin -- as lead characters who fall in love with ordinary human beings.

On Dec. 2, tvN will air “Goblin,” the latest project by Kim Eun-sook, the scriptwriter behind the smash-hit military drama “Descendants of the Sun.” Kim, known in the industry as something of a nonstop hit-maker -- she previously wrote the sugary high school romance “The Heirs” -- says she rummaged through historical documents and spiced them up with her imagination to create a fantasy series based on Korean folklore.

“Not much research has been done on dokkaebi (Korean goblins), so there was a lot of room for storytelling,” Kim told reporters at a press conference in southern Seoul on Tuesday.

    restmb_jhidxmake.php?idx=5&simg=20161123

The main character of “Goblin,” Kim Shin, is played by Gong Yoo, who has been enjoying a prolific year on the big screen with “Train to Busan” and “Age of Shadows.”

Kim was turned into a goblin and rendered immortal after being impaled in the heart with a sword. Though he underwent no physically grotesque transformation, Kim has become both blessed and cursed with a lifetime of eternity until “the true goblin bride can remove the sword,” according to prophesy.

So Kim leads a torturous existence for nearly a thousand years on earth, until one day in 2016, he meets Ji Eun-tak, a sprightly 19-year-old high school student played by actress Kim Go-eun, who was in the 2016 series “Cheese in the Trap.”

Kim is drawn to the cheery young girl, who has the uncanny ability to see spirits and can summon them by blowing out candles. Eventually -- inevitably -- he will have to make the choice between immortality and love.

“It’s a challenge playing a role that isn’t human,” said Gong. “But I hope people will be able escape from the difficulties of reality through this drama.”

“There are largely two reasons people seek the fantasy genre,” according to drama critic Yoon Seok-jin. “The fantasy world can either offer a new set of moral rules different from those of the real world. It can also solve things that can’t be solved in the real world.”

In recent fantasy series, including “My Love” and last year’s “The Girl who Sees Smells” -- which features a girl able to trace smells as visible colors and shapes -- the heroes possess supernatural abilities that are used to unravel unsolvable problems, Yoon said.

“This can reflect viewers’ frustration with the established systems,” he added.

The fantasy genre, meanwhile, poses the risk of running amok.

“There’s the danger of everything being explained away with supernatural phenomena,” said Yoon. “A set of rules need to exist within the fantasy world as well.”

    restmb_jhidxmake.php?idx=5&simg=20161123

Actress Bae Doo-na recently gifted actor Ha Jung-woo with a coffee truck on the set of his upcoming film.

Bae‘s agency, SBD Entertainment, shared a picture of the coffee truck on their Instagram account on Tuesday.

    restmb_jhidxmake.php?idx=5&simg=20161123

Ha is currently filming his upcoming movie “With God,” and so to show her support, Bae sent the coffee truck with a banner that read, “To my husband who saved me from a tunnel, and is now with God, best wishes for your movie!”

Bae and Ha played a married couple in the survival drama film “The Tunnel,” which is why Bae referred to Ha as her husband in the banner. She also wrote that he is now with God, in reference to his current film “With God.”

  6. Kang Dong-won to Revitalize Box Office
    November 08, 2016 12:50 |  By Lee Tae-hoon  | The Chosun Iilbo

Actor Kang Dong-won is set to make a splash at this month's box office with "Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned."

The film was originally due to be released this Thursday but has been kept back for six days to target students once they have sat the college entrance exam next week.

The movie is a fantasy melodrama about a boy who returns from a mysterious world where time and space stand still, and a girl who is the only person to believe him.

    2016110801573_0.jpg Kang Dong-won

The anticipation has resulted in some shuffling.

Romantic comedy "Because I Love You" starring Kim You-jung, who became the nation’s sweetheart in the TV series "Love in the Moonlight," and rom-com stalwart Cha Tae-hyun, originally had the same release date but was postponed till next year.

Instead "Split" starring Yoo Ji-tae will be released this Thursday, a week earlier than planned. "Brother," starring Cho Jung-seok, will be released the same day next week as "Vanishing Time," a week earlier than planned, because the fan bases are unlikely to overlap.

Kang is one of very few actors who can "open" a movie, i.e. guarantee ticket sales, and his fan base heavily leans towards women.

This autumn has been a quiet season in the cinema except for the unexpected hit "Lucky," a gentle comedy for a weary nation, and the industry hopes that Kang's return can stir things up.

"It would be good if some movies can still attract people to the cinema in the low season before the blockbusters erupt at the end of the year," a staffer at a movie distributor said.

  9. Sung Hoon lands leading role in pre-produced rom-com drama

    sunghoon_10.jpg

Sung Hoon has landed a lead role in an upcoming pre-produced drama, capitalizing on his recent and growing wave of popularity (thanks in large part to his crowd-pleasing loveline with Shin Hye-sun in Five Kids; he was also a cute sidekick in last year’s Oh My Venus). He’ll be the leading man in a rom-com that appears to be going by the English title My Secret Romance, although the Korean title means more along the lines of “frustrating romance” or “you-drive-me-crazy romance.” (I can see why they opted against a literal translation; the term gets a bit lost in translation.)

The plot sounds cute: In a dating world fully of busy people who tend to flirt and chase “some” relationships rather than having meaningful connections that allow them to show their true feelings, our main couple has a one-night stand. They meet again three years later, whereupon they kick off a shaky push-pull romance that’ll keep them on their toes as they fall in love.

Sung Hoon plays Jin-wook, a second-generation chaebol who only dates casually until he meets the heroine, and starts to change. He’s the type of guy all the woman are crazy about, but he doesn’t particularly feel anything for them and enjoys partying and going to clubs, always finding himself in the spotlight wherever he goes. He and the heroine, a perpetually single 25-year-old named Yumi, meet at a Jeju resort and get caught up in a series of misunderstandings and accidents. She’s a bit prim and doesn’t bother to wear makeup or do her hair, but somehow they get caught up in the mood of the night; she’s initially charmed by his sly, playful personality and they spend the night together.

But in the morning, she’s gone: “She disappears like the wind like Cinderella, leaving behind one shoe, and after that night, he becomes romantically handicapped, like he’s been caught up in a spell.” He’s irrationally angry with her for leaving without a word, or even telling him her last name, though he tells himself it’s because she’s insulted him.

Three years later, the couple runs into each other again: He’s completely changed, turning into a prickly workaholic corporate director who no longer parties or even enjoys his life, focusing solely on his job. Although thinking of Yumi still angers him, he’s been unable to throw away the shoe she left behind. One day she suddenly turns up as the new nutritionist at the company cafeteria, and although they pretend not to remember each other, as they dance around their physical attraction (and memories of that one night), they begin to wonder if this could turn into anything more, or if it’ll just end up hurting them.

My Secret Romance was selected in the 2015 Top Creator Audition held by KOCCA, the Korea Creative Content Agency, and is being produced by Godin Media, which produced the currently airing remake drama 1% of Anything. Directing will be PD Kang Chul-woo, who is also directing 1% of Anything, as well as both seasons of Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo-yong. The drama will be 100 percent pre-produced, and while there’s no broadcast information yet, it’s calling itself a “global romance” project that is aiming for a multinational and multi-platform release, online as well as on television. That seems rather ambitious in scope to me, but I’d be satisfied if it turns out to be another cute, sweet romance on a small cable outlet, like 1% of Anything, which is my favorite currently airing show of the moment.

I’m not sure if it’s just that the descriptions provided were more thorough than usual, or because they were well-written to cater to my romance-loving heart, but this kind of story premise is exactly my kind of catnip, so I’ll be keeping a close watch on updates. My Secret Romance is aiming for a release sometime in the first half 2017.

  10. Sung Hoon In For A New Kind Of Romance

    fmh9cms38l99voxxm7kliocq67n83sv9.jpg
[by Ent Team] Sung Hoon has been casted to interpret Chan Jin Wook, the male protagonist in upcoming drama series ‘My Secret Romance’.

‘My Secret Romance’ tells the story of sly Cha Jin Wook (Sung Hoon) and Lee Yoo Mi (no information on the casting yet) who meets three years after their first, unique, encounter: a one night stand. This comedy treats flirting and how romance can be created from fleshly memories.

In the drama series, Cha Jin Wook is a second generation chaebeol who isn’t really serious about relationships. But his meeting with the female protagonist of the show will change him. With physical advantages and a handsome face, Sung Hoon was perfect for the role.

Last year, the actor played CEO Kang Hoon in web series ‘Noble, My Love’. His acting was highly praised by the audience. This year, he also gained popularity amongst cinema lovers in movie ‘Five Enough’, in which he played pro golfer Kim Sang Min.

Known for a perfect immersion into his characters’ lives, Sung Hoon will, this time again, satisfy the public with great acting.

Meanwhile, the filming of ‘My Secret Romance’ will kick off very soon. (photo by stallion entertainment)

First still cuts of Gong Yoo with Kim Go Eun for 'Goblin' released

    201611040850039910_1.jpg

Article: 'Goblin' Gong Yoo and Kim Go Eun's first meeting in the rain spotted

    Source: Newsen via Nate

    1. [+657, -65] Ugh... Kim Go Eun... not that we can do anything since filming has already begun but she's such a bad fit for this role. People are saying wait until after the pilot episode airs to dish out the hate but there's no need to wait for that. There's something called chemistry between the leads and these two don't have any at all..........

    2. [+594, -45] If they were going to cast Kim Go Eun, they might as well have opened up auditions to anyone~ ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    3. [+540, -41] Wow, I always thought she had a unique face, but at this point it doesn't even matter whether she's pretty or not, she just doesn't match with Gong Yoo at all....

    4. [+42, -5] I bet Kim Go Eun has a huge, huge sponsor like Choin Soon Shil helping her along

    5. [+40, -5] What is she, seriously... can't they cast someone who actually matches the leads? This is a romance drama, the still cuts already show that they don't match at all

    6. [+36, -4] I wonder what luck Kim Go Eun was born with to be matched with all these handsome male leads... when her acting never improves. I can already tell by her facial expression in these cuts that her acting remains the same.

    7. [+27, -3] I feel like Gong Yoo is not going to do another drama if this one fails after 'Big' did too.. ㅜㅜ this is our last chance as the viewers to hold on to him ㅠㅜ

    8. [+25, -2] At least Gong Yoo is fulfilling his end of the job..

    9. [+25, -2] The scene looks like Gong Yoo looking at some high school student passing by him after class

    10. [+24, -4] Yoo In Na should've been the lead, drop Kim Go Eun to supporting

    11. [+21, -3] I have to wonder what sponsor Kim Go Eun has when every single drama of hers has been controversial about lacking chemistry and lacking acting skills

    12. [+20, -4] The imbalance of the visuals...

the hate on KGE is pretty harsh.. but I guess to each his/her own. cause I like her.. like super like her... and my goodness Gong yoo is looking so fine...
