SHwa is painted as a strong, independent woman. The modern woman who is confident and self-sufficient. Everyone is amazed at how she as able to squeeze everything into her day because it seems so impossible (which is taking a toll on her health apparently). She seems to have everything under her control and she’s always level-headed and objective that you can be confident on her opinion. Praised as an achiever, she's used to accomplishing things on her own. She arranged IJ’s first surgery in Yulje all by herself and as I’m observing how she teaches her students, she also has the tendency to take things into her own hands. No one can question her capabilities. But when you’re always so self-sufficient, it could also get lonely at times. When you’re always the pillar, don’t you reach a point where it’s hard to bear all the weight by yourself? We might not see it, but she has her own weaknesses and struggles. She’s human afterall. But she has mastered being strong and independent that she is able to keep her composure even in the toughest times. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean she isn’t shaken inside.

I love your detailed analysis and reasoning behind SHwa, all the while respecting her love for solo independence as a female and yet not downplaying how we all need some good company at times in life. SHwa is no doubt my favourite character in HP, and often it's because of her character being such a strong supporting pillar in the 99s friendship group, and how refreshing it is to have a capable, inspiring woman in Kdrama yet all the while being sweet, kind and not at all intimidating to her peers and subordinates. As I re-watched all the episodes, I really enjoyed the way the writer peppered snippets and insights of her story and weaved it into the main storyline, be it her friendship with all the boys or her potential loveline with IJ.

She's portrayed as an extremely capable career woman, and I really think the Daddy Long-legs Program scene in ep 4 (jumping ahead here) explained a lot about her personality traits, with her taking all the reins and charging on despite CH offering his help multiple times. That's also one of the reason I was never onboard the SHwa-CH ship because he's always shown as missing his timing and a step behind (be it his courting actions or his confession).

Interestingly with IJ, we are able to see more sides of the human Songhwa and not just wonder woman ghost Professor Chae, but more of her insecure vulnerability and (lack of better term) the more fragile side of her as a woman. That look she had when she saw IK waiting at the hospital for her review during the breast diagnosis scare and knowing that won't be alone facing this? Or the one she gave IK when they were about to enter the room for the doctor's review? Oopf, she's definitely looking for assurance, and IK has always been there to support her during all these times when she needs someone to be with her.

The camera perspectives and intercut scenes by Director Shin have always been very deliberate in his shows, and I have no doubts the same for HP.  We were shown quite a number of fleeting scenes since ep 1 of the camera panning to SHwa and her reactions to IJ and his actions like below, and I think it's pretty obvious how intentional the writer and director have been in setting the backstory between them from the start to the transition point around ep 4 when IJ got divorced.

    - Ep 1: The scene of SHwa smiling outside the door when IJ's surgery was a success and he wanted her to inform the patient's family instead of him doing it.

    - Ep 2: At the flashback scene with SHwa was singing "Introduce me a good person", the exact lyrics when she was pointing out the cake and smiling to IK after was "I want someone caring who noticed even small details". Totally apt for the someone who's always there at the right timing when she needs someone and  silently expressing his care in the most IK way ever (nothing better than getting your morning coffee delivered the instant you craved for it).

There are so many more and I really can't wait as we rewatch all the eps again to relive the story between two life-long friends and count down till season 2 to find out the meaning behind SHwa's deep love for rainy days. I'm sure it's gonna be all sentimental and romantic, and definitely linked to her first love IJ.

This is the longest clip that I’ve saw from this interview until now (if someone has the link of the full interview pls send to me).

Anyways I could understand the last two questions that SYJ and HB replied ‘cause was already translated on SNS by other ppl, but the first question wasn’t. If someone could translate  I would be extremely grateful :

There you are, translations for the first question! How cute that SYJ totally ignored the key part of the question and tried hard to answer logically.

    ------

Fan: Let’s be honest. The negotiation fell apart because your heart fluttered after seeing HB and you just couldn’t stay angry isn't it?

SYJ: There were many moments (in the movie) when I felt angry. But as the truth was slowly revealed to me in the later part of the movie, I felt like I could identify with him more and sympathise (with his actions). But as a negotiator, there can be no failures and so I tried hard to stay logical. hehehe..

    ------

Plus the latest update on the CLOY DVD which I could find posted 28 Feb says that the staff from the production company are working remotely due to the virus situation in Korea. Therefore, the DVD team is anticipating some delays for the crew to gather together and proceed with the DVD meeting. The team has not heard anything back from the producing company yet, but the distribution firm has requested data transfer from them to ensure that the relevant footages will not be deleted for now.

Previously i asked this in LUTYN thread.. how they called each other names.. and thank u for give this clip.. at first kaj called him kim nam gil shi.. but after that she called him "oppa".. LOL. Its a good start consider they r close now.. she also said that she felt comfortable acting with him..

btw i wanna hear kng called her "joong-ah" :D do u have any clips of it?? If u have it share it here please.... :D

I just read in DC that the same production crew who revealed the BTS happenings commented that the cast called each other their real names on set, while the crew calls them by their character names.. So i'm guessing she calls him oppa while he calls her Ah-joong? Or maybe Ah-joongah or Ah-joongie to be more affectionate?

Oh and although unfortunately, we have yet to get our hands on the bday message vid or even just what she said.  I swear, you'd think it's like governments secrets. At least we do know thanks to a fan account's reaction to the vid...he was shocked the most by hers because it was the longest one.  But like I said we still don't know what was said. :tears: *sigh*

Do you have any idea which fan account is this from?

Notice how at 3:40, Hyeri was hitting RJY in a very gf-like way when Lee Moon Sae was on stage teasing RJY about proposing in real life to Deoksun?? Her reaction was really suspicious and she was mouthing "mo-ya, mo-ya" which means "what is this? what is this?" to him.. Hahaaa this couple is definitely not just friends. No way friends would do this when they are teased if they do not have feelings for each other.

  6. Happy Lunar New Year to everyone who celebrates it!  모두 새해 복 많이 받으세요~ *^o^*

Hyeri talked about tearing up at Junghwan's confession scene again in her recent interview. I only selectively picked some parts of the interview which I felt we would be interested to know more to translate and share.

Hyeri, "The moment I read the script, it was so sad that I thought that it's definitely gonna be a big thing. From Hyeri's perspective, and not from Deoksun's perspective, Junghwan's feelings that couldn't be expressed even once were really unfortunate. I was sad as I felt we were saying goodbye. I felt that it would be difficult for Junyeol oppa to face me so I tried hard to avoid his eyes. But hearing his lines just through my ears made me tear up more.

  7. Ryu Jun-yeol shared in V-app streaming that the whole atmosphere was very down during JH's confession scene in ep 18. He's not the kind who would spend a lot of time reading the script many times but for this important scene, he memorised the lines and went into filming.. Hyeri couldn't stop crying and they had to pause filming even and wait for her to calm down before they start filming again.

  8. I admit to watching ep20 with a heavy heart yesterday. And I'm glad to write here that my love for the story remains the same.

I've always been a firm JH supporter right from ep 1. When they showed the scene of JH's smirking smile at DS on TV. I'll be honest and say that it has been difficult for me to let the story development sink in since ep 19 and it's largely because of attachment to the wonderfully written (and acted) character Kim Jung Hwan.

Despite the ending couple not being the couple I wish for, despite JH not getting the closure we all wanted so much for, despite many loopholes we did not get answers for in the last ep, I'm writing this because I still want to thank the writer and the team for giving us a memorable Answer Me 1988.

After rewatching ep 19 and 20, and reading many comments on Naver, TVN board, DC Gall and the recent recap on Dramabeans site, I finally came to an end about this overwhelming sense of bittersweet sadness I've been feeling after watching the ending epilogue.

If we go back to the family theme of this series, I believe the writer has fulfilled what she promised.

She has created a neighborhood full of loving characters whom we love. Families we all feel like our own. Mums who never fail to stop worrying over their kids just like our own. Dads who made us cry over their silent suffering like our own. Siblings who fight and love just as strongly as our own. Husbands and wives who prove screaming and nagging are just another form of love like ours in marriages. First loves who's heartbreak aches just as much as our past loves. Characters whom we felt like old friends. Friendship forming and fading, so we know how precious relationships are.

And the youth we know we can never go back again.

In the ending scene when DS was asking the gang why are they here, and JH simply answered "What do you mean why are we here? Where would we have gone?”, i really teared up at the meaning of this simple conversation. That our youth, those days we remember fondly. Those times that felt so faraway and those things that we can no longer find in reality, are simply more beautiful because they are remembered as part of our memory, that we have lived and loved once.

Looking at the current landscape of Korean dramas, when would we ever have such a poignant story written again? A story about times when things were simpler. A story that talks deeply about the love and ties of family, friends, siblings, husbands and wives. When i wonder that, I begin to believe that Answer Me 1988 is and will always be a gem in Kdrama history. A story that dares to move the central love to the backseat and spend time telling stories honoring our fabulous mums and dads.

That's not to say this drama is without its flaws. Plenty it has, but I think the flaws do not take away the meaningful messages this series has tried hard to relay. Like many frustrations I've seen, the husband hunt story and choosing not to focus on DS's inner thoughts was what I felt a key barrier from keeping the story flowing. Nearing the end, I was contented to see DS happy and enjoying a cute romance with Taek but at the same time sad that I stopped feeling invested enough to feel the happiness her character was feeling.

Of course we could say the writer could have done much more in the last 2 eps. They could have given us a perfect happy ending with the whole gang turning up and hanging out like old times in 2016. They could have given us a proper closure for JH and clear up the disjointed hints scattered in the past eps. But in my opinion, it was probably an intentional buildup the writer wanted.

Like the broken, abandoned Ssangmun-dong we see, things don't stay the same forever no matter how much we wish for forever. Like the friendship we yearn to protect forever, things often don't work out the same way and relationships fade.

So i finally figured out the why behind my bittersweet sadness. Maybe the ending was just a little too true to reality that my heart was refusing to accept the sad truth. That I was not ready to answer their call for my 1988, my days of youth.

This series will stay on the list as one of my favs. Because no matter its flaws, it has given me a good nostalgic dose of heartwarming happiness, bad sobbing, heartbreaks, frustrations and many more ups and downs in emotions through Ssangmun-dong and its 5 families. And just for that, I really thank the writer, PD and the whole cast and production team for coming together to make 1988 memorable for us.

  9. One theory I was hoping fellow shippers can share some insights on too ~

The scene in ep 18 where they named the theme of the ep "Goodbye First Love" captures a white feather floating on the doorstep, past the Forrest Gump movie poster, through the gate bars, and then towards JH's open window. The scene then narrows to JH entering his room after a bath. The background song for the whole scene was the instrumental piano song "Forrest Gump - Feather Theme" in the movie OST.

I'm not familiar at all with the movie, having not watched it before. But some reading on the synopsis and the movie tells that the white feather has a strong symbolism in the Forrest Gump movie. I'm pretty certain that scene wasn't filmed just for aesthetic purposes but carries a strong meaning towards the storyline. The whole 1988 story in fact, is shown to carry some elements of the Forrest Gump movie, such as main characters knowing each other since little kids, first loves, key stories happening on bus scenes, male character in the armed forces, and so on. It was also the movie JH and DR was catching before JH finally makes a pivotal decision to go after DS.

Back to the Forrest Gump story. Tom Hanks, the main character of the movie interpreted the feather as: “Our destiny is only defined by how we deal with the chance elements to our life and that’s kind of the embodiment of the feather as it comes in. Here is this thing that can land anywhere and that it lands at your feet. It has theological implications that are really huge.” This ties in exactly with what ep 18 and JH's narration has been telling us. That destiny and timing is driven by the decisions and actions we make at each crucial point of time.

With the white feather floating towards JH, I'm interpreting it as as an intentional symbolism from the scriptwriter and PD about his character. That he is the one embodying this journey, and the destination of the journey is dependent on how he deals with decisions and actions from now onwards. Any thoughts from those who are familiar with the movie? :)

I was thinking "don't tell me that this is just JH's imagination, please" at the end of the confession, but the writer-nim is actually more evil than that. aigooo.

I still can't get over the look on DS face when SW ask her "you got fooled too right?" it's like she's faking a laugh.. the two friends might don't know, but DS should know. what JH said were all true; DS experienced it, when JH gave her umbrella waiting for her to came home at night, when he gave her the gift or the bus scenes the alley the 'bed' scene PLEASE DEOKSEON-AH :tears::tears::tears::tears:

I strongly trust that DS knows the confession was real. The connection was between them even though SW and DR were present as well. Like you said, she was part of all the memories he brought up, and the "hajima" scene was enough for her to conclude that JH then has been crushing on her, so I'm not doubting that she has an inkling the confession was very much his heartfelt words.

But I'm not blinded to her glance towards the glassdoor scene either. If that's her true reaction (without any trolling or reversal on the scriptwriter's side) after hearing JH's confession, then I think it's really time for us to let go and wish all the best for the other couple.

BUT I'm still feeling hopeful that we weren't given insight about her real feelings YET. I need her narration of her inner dialogue to really come to an end about DS's real love story.

So I'm with the rest who said that it could be the director's intention to make her feelings unreadable for now. So that we could have a bigger, more impactful reveal later.

  11. Guys, I've got to get this out after watching this ep.

I've watched TONS of dramas. Good and bad crappy ones included. Answer series have always been one of my favs, and 1988 is of course the one I hold most dearly to my heart so far.

There hasn't been any confession scenes that I've seen in any drama before that made me cry. JH's one is ep 18 was the first.

His lines, his acting, his facial expressions and the setting of the scene was just so soo sad. The fact that he has to resort to using this gathering to make his confession. No romantic atmosphere, no music, no preparations. The two of them weren't even alone!

My heart really broke seeing his wistful smile at the end. The fact that he had to turn his long-awaited confession into a JOKE! God knows how long he has been crushing on DS, it could jolly well be since they were little kids!

I'm not going to care how the scriptwriter is going to lead us to the end anymore, but I just want a proper closure for JH's love line. He deserves for DS to know how much he ever cared and loved her, to have the past misunderstandings cleared and for DS to know that he has always been there in those moments she thought he didn't care.

People says JH missed many of his chances and timing to confess. I agree, but what's sadder is that he knows he brought this on himself. But he still couldn't helped it. He chose to keep everything bottled so that hopefully his friends could stay happy. So he turned his confession to a laughing joke, turning the burden to be on himself and not DS.

I really love all the characters in this series, especially the gang of friends in 1988. Whoever gets to be the lucky guy called DS's husband has my blessing. I'm only wishing now that the story leading us there would be written beautifully and ended with meaning for all of the friends. Their friendship is too precious to be wasted on a messy husband mystery plot.
