The script reading scene of tvN's highly anticipated drama Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born has been revealed. 

Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born tells the story of Yoon Jeong Nyeon, a girl with a talent for singing who strives to become the best gugak actor. The K-drama is set against the backdrop of the immediate aftermath of the Korean War in the 1950s, an era characterized by poverty. 

The casting of Kim Tae Ri (as Yoon Jeong Nyeon), Shin Ye Eun (as Heo Young Seo), Ra Mi Ran (as Kang So Bok), Jung Eun Chae (as Moon Ok Kyung), Kim Yoon Hye (as Seo Hye Rang), and special appearances by Moon So Ri and Lee Deok Hwa have garnered anticipation.

The actors also expressed their excitement about participating in Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born.  

Kim Tae Ri remarked, "I enjoyed reading the webtoon, and I decided to participate because I found it interesting that women's gukgeuk [traditional Korean opera] had significance and value at the time. I'm diligently practicing singing and dancing, and also practicing dialect with my [on-screen] mom (Moon So Ri)." She added, "I think it'll be interesting to watch what charm there was in women's gukgeuk that captivated countless fans during that era. And what it would be like if that charm were to be showcased through the faces and voices of the captivating women of our time."

Shin Ye Eun stated, "Since learning about gukgeuk, I've felt its many charms, and I hope you all will fall in love with that charm too." She continued, "I'm proud of Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born. Please give me lots of love."  

Ra Mi Ran added to the cheerfulness by saying, "I chose to participate in Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born because Kim Tae Ri is appearing in it." 

Moon So Ri shared a behind-the-scenes story, saying, "I learned vocal techniques in my twenties. I even went to Mokpo with Kim Tae Ri and Oh Kyung Hwa to study the Jeolla dialect."

Based on a popular webtoon, the drama is directed by Jung Ji In, known for “The Red Sleeve.” Set in the 1950s, shortly after the Korean War, the series follows Jeong Nyeon, a young vocal prodigy who dreams of becoming a top traditional theater actor. The show explores Jeong Nyeon’s journey through competition, teamwork, and personal growth amid the era’s poverty and romance.

The cast includes Kim Tae Ri, who takes on the titular role of Jung Nyeon, alongside Shin Ye Eun, Ra Mi Ran, Jung Eun Chae, Kim Yoon Hye, and special guest Moon So Ri. The impressive cast has generated high anticipation for the drama’s release.

tvN's new weekend drama Jeong Nyeon has confirmed its premiere date for October 12 and unveiled its first two posters. 

Jeong Nyeon tells the story of Yoon Jeong Nyeon, a girl with a talent for singing who strives to become the best gugak actor. The K-drama is set against the backdrop of the immediate aftermath of the Korean War in the 1950s, an era characterized by poverty. 

Based on the webtoon of the same name by Seo I Re and Namon, Jeong Nyeon explores the concept of women's gugak (a type of traditional Korean opera that gained great popularity around the Korean War in the 1950s, where all roles are played by women). The two posters depict the five main characters who will shine in the Maeran Women's National Theater.

The theater beckons in the first teaser for tvN’s period drama Jeongnyeon — The Star is Born, in which a young girl strives to stand on the stage that spoke to her heart. Based on the webtoon of the same name by Seo Yi-re and Namon, the twelve-episode adaptation will portray an empowering coming-of-age story against the backdrop of a troubled time.

In the 1950s, amidst the arduous aftermath of the Korean War, the women’s theatrical troupe attained popularity through the romantic idealism of their tales. As for our eponymous heroine Yoon Jeong-nyeon, played by Kim Tae-ri (Revenant), she only has a vague impression of such an art. “I heard the actors take up roles, singing and dancing and acting,” Jeong-nyeon muses.

 

Then she attends a performance, and it changes the trajectory of her life. Upon the stage, Jung Eun-chae (Your Honor) commands a charismatic presence as Moon Ok-gyung, the troupe’s star who takes up the mantle of the leading man. Opposite her is Kim Yoon-hye (Goodbye Earth) as Seo Hye-rang, whose graceful movements are befitting of a prima donna. As the stunning spectacle unfolds onstage, woven through elaborate costumes and dynamic choreography, an enraptured Jeong-nyeon watches. “What I saw today,” Jeong-nyeon breathes, utterly transfixed, “was a whole other world.”

Captivated by the theater’s magic, an awestruck Jeong-nyeon aspires to rise onto that very stage. Stepping into a pair of traditional shoes, Jeong-nyeon spends her nights rehearsing in the front yard, honing her skills with a determined diligence. She’ll have to contend with the stoic and upright troupe leader Kang So-bok, played by Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern), alongside Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse) as the capable rival trainee Heo Young-seo.

But talent flows through Jeong-nyeon’s veins, and the spotlight soon welcomes her into its nascent glow. Kim Tae Ri will soon be starring as the lead of the highly anticipated webtoon-based K-drama Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born. Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born has revealed a new teaser showing Kim Tae Ri’s Yoon Jeongnyeon’s challenging journey from a small village to the opera stage. 

On September 5, 2024, tvN dropped a new ‘growth teaser’ starring Kim Tae Ri from Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born. 

In the new teaser, we see Kim Tae Ri as she melts into Yoon Jeongnyeon and begins her journey as a normal village girl from Mokpo. She first aimlessly walks with her dreamy eyes and after knowing where she has to go, her pace picks up. 

Opening a door to the new world of opera theatre, Yoon Jeongnyeon becomes a trainee in Ra Mi Ran’s Kang So Bok’s Maeran Theater Company. She is then seen in a new get-up as she practices for her part while holding a script. She is slowly closing to the stage that is her dream. 

Finally, Kim Tae Ri opens the last door which brings her to the Korean traditional opera stage as she finally reaches the end point of the challenging journey she has taken. Yoon Jeongnyeon is seen in her costume for the part, a traditional Korean hanbok while bold makeup makes her face shine. 

 

Yoon Jeongnyeon now boldly acts her part as claps fill the theatre. Kim Tae Ri’s Yoon Jeongnyeon finally reaches the opera stage and makes a gesture as if telling the world that she achieved her dream of becoming a lead and star of the Korean traditional opera stage. While the screen reads “Sound is my floor and sky”.
