Kim Haneul is looking to get back to dramaland, with reports that she’s eyeing her first TV series in four years (since 2012’s rom-com hit Gentleman’s Dignity) and also the first since her marriage last year. The project is KBS’s On the Way to the Airport, which we previously heard was considering Choi Ji-woo and Lee Sang-yoon to star. Choi Ji-woo is no longer in the mix, but Lee Sang-yoon (Twenty Again) still is.
On the Way to the Airport features a married couple at its center, with Kim Haneul playing a flight crew member with 12 years of experience. The character may look elegant and soft, but she’s got a tough strength about her and performs her job capably and competently. She was the breadwinner for her family in her younger days, and is now married (Lee Sang-yoon would play the husband), a pregnancy having prompted them to tie the knot (LOL)
The drama is described as telling the story of a second adolescence for people in their late thirties and early forties in a realistic and delicate way, while also incorporating themes of Jeju island living and traditional Korean architecture and the lives of flight crew members. I know, I know, what a scattered description, and not one that particularly sings. But the producers have some solid credentials, such as PD Kim Chul-kyu’s prior dramas Hwang Jin-yi and Daemul; it’ll be a first drama for film screenwriter Lee Sook-yeon (One Fine Spring Day). Plus, I have found that dramas with hazy descriptions can surprise you by turning out unexpectedly well-crafted and thoughtful, in the cases where skilled execution far outstrips the basic one-line plot. So I’m firmly in wait-and-see mode here.
On the Way to the Airport is looking at the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot on KBS to follow Uncontrollably Fond, which puts its premiere in September.

On the Way to the Airport is the name of a new project under consideration at KBS, which spent some time (a LOT of time) fighting with SBS to claim Jealousy Incarnate, then sulking about losing it. I guess they decided to move on to more productive avenues, and word is out that offers have been made to Choi Ji-woo and Lee Sang-yoon to headline the new drama in the timeslot meant for Jealousy Incarnate. But… we just saw them together in Twenty Again!
Not that I disliked them together, since they were adorable and that drama was sweetly funny and I loved their rapport as bickering adults with crushes on each other (well, mostly it was him crushing on her)—but I tend to think couple reunions work best when some time has actually passed between shows. (Twenty Again wrapped last October.) Still, I suppose I wouldn’t be unhappy to watch them be Twenty Again Again, although reps for both stars stated that they’ve only received offers, and have not decided anything.
About the story: On the Way to the Airportcenters around married couples and the “second adolescence” experienced in one’s late thirties and early forties. It isn’t a drama that’s specifically about flight crew, but does intend to portray their everyday lives in detail. It also depicts island life on Jeju as well as old-fashioned Korean architecture (han-ok), both noted as popular romantic ideas/fantasies.
That sounds pretty scattered as far as plots go, but reading between the lines, I’m presuming that there’ll be a lot of travel to and from Jeju, with one or more main characters a part of the crew, possibly undergoing some kind of mid-life crisis despite being happily married. (The plot description does state that it’s not a story about dating or adultery, but about couples in honest relationships.) It sounds to me like it’s a warm human drama type story, but we’ll have to await further details.
This will be the first drama series written by screenwriter Lee Sook-yeon of movies One Fine Spring Day and The Sword With No Name; directing is PD Kim Chul-kyu of Hwang Jin-yi and Daemul. On the Way to the Airportwill air at the end of August as a KBS Wednesday-Thursday series.
