  1. POWER AND THE KING

"Jeong Do Jeon one of the scholars who helped found Joseon acknowledged that each king was different – with different weaknesses and personality – so he believed it was up to the prime minister to balance out the king’s weaknesses. Monarchic authoritarianism was rejected in the Joseon dynasty and power of administration allocated to the prime minister.

%EC%95%8C%EC%94%A8%ED%8E%B8%EC%A7%91_%ECBut the actual power of the king varied depending on the personality of the king himself and the strength of the political factions at the time.

Although Jeong Do-jeon the prime minister wanted the government to have actual political power rather than the king, King Taejong (the third king r.1400-1418) was very ambitious and power-hungry and he created the State Council of Joseon (의정부), declaring that all decisions passed by the State Council could only come into effect with the approval of the king.

But later, other kings struggled against the powerful political factions that had developed in their governments over time. King Jungjong (r.1506-1544) (left played by Im Ho in Jewel in the Palace) came to power after a coup to depose the tyrant Yeonsangun. But he struggled with the  strong Hungu political faction since they had helped him become king.

And some kings were mere puppets while other family members – queen mothers, queens, in-laws – were really in control! For most of the 19th century the Andong Kim clan of the Norin faction controlled the government. And all the kings at this time had to marry queens from the Andong clan!"

oh, no... please, hide or delete the quote I wrote. It's a SPOILER, and my SPECULATION based on historical facts. Tha't why I hid it like that.

thanks... i watched the great seer and in the last part the queen convinced the king not to give the throne to LBW cause he killed Jung Mong Jo... it's annoying that he should be rewarded for what he have done but in the end they even tried to kill him..

i wanna see a part where the future queen run to the battlefield when she heard about LBW's death..

@homura to tell the truth I was practically hating the sight of Yi Bang-Won in TWDR... he was very ruthless and all he ever want was power. Wonder what kind of event the writers are going to make to turn Yi Bang Won into that kind of devil in TWDR.

I think it will start when JDJ and his group decided to kill him to secure the throne for Yi Bang Seok despite his contributions.. He will snap.. cause he contributed the most and then all of that will turn into nothing.. On top of that, they wanted to kill him after helping them established Joseon.. seriously, where's the appreciation??....

so many people have been judging and criticizing  bang won for being ruthless for killing his in laws and sejong in law. but the in law later one were the cause  of the joseon dynasty fall . And they also blame him for killing his half brother but as I watch jung do jeong he along with his brothers from the same mother were all on this together , How could they not when their father pass over all them to install his favor son as crown prince. I blame lee seong gye the most for the first strife of princes . As for jeong do jeong , he too was looking to kill bang won , but bang won got the better of him first. As i watch tree with deep root we can see moments were sejong blame himself for being too soft on the enemy has he not been soft maybe all those senseless murder may have not occur . Has taejong not been ruthless may be sejong would not have a chance to take the throne .

    i agree... :)

oh I understand that part, but thanks for the explanation btw :)

my question refers to the inital reason why LSG did release the white horse instead of the black one. As BW said he is not capable of betraying georyeo(?), but  I feel like there's something that I missed out and I can't put it together into words lol.

To prevent the war against the Ming, they were supposed to start the revolution but they couldn't start it without LSG's permission..but LSG rejected it.. so that's why it's a white horse..means cancellation..

In my own POV he is weak.. he has the qualification to become a king but the question is can he fight back the opposing sides without someone urging him??

LSG witnessed how his soldiers desperately plead him , then he realized he had to make a move...

I watched the Great Seer korean drama, Hae In told him "If you just run away, you are not qualified to become a king." and then I remember how he just escape to Hamhung after the first strife of the prince ...without doing anything as a father...

Seriously, reading the previous posts here (and the one in another site) made me speechless. I love how everyone tries to give an interpretation of each episode with good insight. On the other hand, I guess people just really put this show into their heart, so any single thing plays out of expectation gives some concern, in a bad case, it turns out into bashing etc. My take is one can't please everyone, it's the same with SFD's writer. Personally, I prefer a happy note for all the dragons since they are literally embdded in the title of this show, so, I still / will focus on their roles in creating new country instead of, let say, focusing on what relationship they have with each other. Moreover, I am all in with the romance department, but this show is EXCEPTIONAL. It has all the best things of any drama can deliver, so I can't and won't ask more. I might cry a river when something bad happens to my favorite characters, but I'll get over it if it is done as awesome as this show always does (so far).

Anyway, can somebody clarify this for me? LSG said he wanted to protect his family so he declined sambong's revolution plan. but how is that protecting his family? does going into the war prevent the royal troops/guards?/General CY from threatening him through his family? (I know it has something to do with the history, but my slow brain can't comprehend this political situation correctly lol)

General Cy took them as a hostage.. CY didn't go with him in the expedition cause he had to stay by KIng U's side..So CY was unsure if YSG will follow his orders , and he had to take YSG's family as a hostage. and then many of his soldiers tried to run away and plead to him that they don't want to go to the war against the MIng and cross the river... then he remembered what Sambong told him about the nation, as a King he will be considered as a father, and the goryeo's people will be his children too...he prioritized his family's safety that's why he was going to the war but then realized that these people/soldiers though were not considered by blood but still can be considered his family ...So he revolted..

    Composer : Joo In-Ro - 주인로 / Title : 님금하 아라쇼셔

Aww, the title is in Medieval Korean language. So it is too difficult to translate in English. It roughly means "임금이시여, 알아주소서 Your Highness, please recognize (or appreciate, realize)." The song is contained in Six flying dragons OST part 4.

Thank you very much... it's one of my favorite.. :)

I read in the esillok site that before King Taejong became a king, Queen Wongyeong had a dream about him sitting in the middle of the sun and then he was embracing her..

Hmm, in the history, King Taejong (Yi Bang-Won) and Queen Wongyeong (Lady Min) are notorious for a couple like enemies. Of course, they had been excellent political partners until they get to the throne. However, no sooner had he become a king, he accepted as many concubines as possible as if he implied that Min clan is nothing to him. He even tried to depose her, but ended in failure. Instead, he killed her brothers. King Taejong's first son, Prince Yangnyeong, ended up being deposed because the king thought he was too close to his maternal uncles. The queen was miserable in her latter years. I guess that's why the writing team didn't choose her as one of the six dragons, even though she was the mother of the greatest Korean king ever.

He deposed Prince Yangnyeong? I read in other sites that Prince Yangnyeong gave up his position as the crown prince and same with the second prince to King Sejong.. They knew that KIng sejong was suited to become a King..That's why the first prince pretended to show some misbehavior in the court, going with people who was a bad influence to him..and then later years the first became a traveler while the Second prince became a monk.. And the reason why he took so many concubines from different powerful clan was not because of the politics? to keep the Min Clan in check..

@homura thanks for the information in the earlier posts..:)

Some people choose to follow their minds while others choose to follow their hearts. In the same idea two people can watch the very same thing and get something totally different from it.  I think for me after watching episode 19 I may have felt different than others.  To me this episode felt to be laying some ground work such as the conversation between LM & SY which I posted about already I found that part important.  Mind you I tend to look at the little things which may or may not be important to others.  From what I am about to write I should wear a heart sign that's flashing.  I thought the part with LBJ & YH which some have already done a great job writing about was moving to me too!  To be honest if LBJ & YH are in the same area during an episode there should be a runner underneath the subs saying CAUTION your heart rate may rise.  Not to mention if where your living is cold like here don't worry they will warm you right up:blush:For me the tender moment was when BW was talking to BY about her talking informally.  He always seems to be saying more than the words that come out of his mouth.  To me it's as if he was saying there is little closeness we can share don't take this away from me.  I also loved the back & forth way they kidded about biting each other.  What stood out was when BW said "Your the only one for me too" It seemed like a simple reminder.

As far as what people are saying about BY although her acting doesn't need defending when she is perfect for this part like I said in another post great acting is just that GREAT ACTING!  I think most already know as I posted it before but I too am a GSY fan and like those here I hope the ones who are saying things about BY will reconsider and stop.  From everything that I know, have seen & read about GSY her heart and compassion for others she would be the first to ask the same.  I also agree with who ever wrote that not only are the leads great every person to the smallest part to me has been perfection.  Even when the credits are rolling you hear the voices of men singing even those very few seconds are like a soft battle cry.  Haven't watched 20 yet but the pictures of MH kneeling I don't know what he was saying but his face made me know that his heart was speaking.....

Episode 20 is already in dramafire... you can watch it too..

I am fan of GSY and Lady Min too..

I feel like we won't be getting much romance from anyone. i don't mind it either if there isn't much love because the chemistry between every couple in this drama is already great. What's keeping me going with this drama is the script, music, and phenomenal acting from everyone in the cast. I'm not talking about just the main cast, I'm saying even the ones who have one scene in one episode.

BTW, General YSG, I think he's my favorite character out of every single one. His expression just says it all, his voice is so powerful too. He loves his people. I think I find him a very humble man.

yeah, YSG is a good man that's why he can never become a strong king... he loves his people, and betray the order of the King to cross the river.. He's amazing.. and i was amazed at the end of ep. 20 when the song "Mu-yi-yi-ya" played.. but still it took him like forever for making a choice whether to cross it or not...He's amazing general but let's see if he's still amazing in the political arena...

BW and MH are my favorite characters in 6FD.. I like Bang Won the most not because he is Yoo Ah In but because of King Taejong..

I watched the previous episodes of 6FD.. and YH's character made me realized something.. YH told JDJ to kill BW and maybe the lost of BW will encourage YSG and join their group.... But BW on the other hand he kills those potential enemies and his enemies for the throne..He just did it for the future generation esp for his son King Sejong. King Sejong ruled without bloodshed must be because his father had already made a preparations for him..King Sejong's reign enjoyed peace and prosperity for many years.. not until he made a wrong choice with his son Danjong.. But King Sejo was a good king, he was similar to King Taejong and all of his works were influenced by King Taejong.

It just shows King taejong burden everything.. He was a good king and a father to his sons.. He did everything for his citizens, sons and for the future generations. Not until the Mid or Late Joseon dynasty, noble clans started to take full control of the government.

i have to admit that i was really rooting for JDJ and philosophically he is my kind BUT as the story unfold and i hear more from @homura and @shirayukihime i slowly turn to LBW the more i hear i become more of his follower

why would BY be the last decent of King gonmin? didnt he have other offspring?

just a fiction... not real..same with the mystery around King U..like was he really the son of King Gong Min or Shin don? so no one knows anyway..it's possible that they hide the child cause they don't want her to involve in the politics..

don't change your views now, it will just only change later on...

For me, I'm BW's side. JDJ is still a mystery... I read somewhere that JDJ feared the influence of women in Goryeo dynasty (maybe he noticedLady Min)  that's why in the Joseon Dynasty women were considered inferior to men, and limit their chance for owning a land..

While I was reading about slaves and gisaengs during the goryeo and joseon dynasty, I found out that King taejong's passed a law for the slaves. It's about the children of a noble man and slave woman will always follow the father's status.. and then King Sejong passed the law that children will follow their mother's status.. We know that slaves women were in disadvantage,,, they were took as a concubines of the noble, and their children were still illegitimate.. so i think the law that King Taejong's passed was very beneficial for slaves women..( i remember BY)  .We can see how BW's grand daughter was discriminated and beaten to death.. His granddaughter was the daughter of his first son with the slave..

they will be devided so soon? i thought it will be after LSG is the King and wants to crown his 8th son, so it will be soo?

and im very curious abou BY & BJ mother we still have to hear what GSM has to say about it

and i think GSM will reveal her mystery to BY and WOW a princess? and BJ a prince? that would make a twist in the story

After they founded Joseon and Yi Seung Ge becomes a King, it will start a rivalry between Bang Won and JDJ.. I think there will be more events, like not agreeing on something especially about the ministers controlling the court  and things that will benefit them.. like in the history King Taejo distributed the lands to the scholar officials... and the scholar officials will try to hide the lands..... then it will lead to choosing of crown prince and the strife of princes..

Maybe just only BY... It's just my guess anyway. They hid her to become a sole survivor of King Gongmin's lineage.....if they plan to form a rivalry between lady min and by

My personal opinion about why Boon-Yi was bashed by Korean netizens in ep. 19.

    1. Misogynists don't like "a strong female leader". Unfortunately, there are more and more misogynists here in South Korea recently due to increasing economic crisis. Men living in poverty have a tendency to bash women because women are easier target to run down. They also hate Cinderella story. "A lowly female lead falls in love with a rich Prince Charming" is the worst story for them.

    2. Infidelity is the most hated thing among married Korean women. They are TV drama's prime viewers. Even though Bang-Won and Boon-Yi fell in love with each other before his arranged marriage, and even though it was natural in that period for a married noble man to meet another woman, many Korean female viewers start to feel uncomfortable about their relationships. Some of them began to show more empathy toward Lady Min, treating Boon-Yi like an illicit woman.

    3. Others criticized that Boon-Yi's attitude toward Lady Min in the beginning of ep 19  looked arrogant. They say that it is unthinkable for a commoner maid to talk to a noble class lady like that in such an extremely casted society.

    4. Korean Sageuk fans usually don't like a romance between a historical figure and a fictional character. This is a typical backlash. Many of them just hate any romance in Sageuk.

    5. The trio's night trespass on Biguksa temple looks childish. It gives a negative impression that they are playing a revolution adventure for fun.

    6. Most of all, Yi Bang-Won's fans seem to get angry about the writers. In 1388. Bang-Won should be a father of many children as well as a civil officer working for the central government. In the history, he was the only Joseon king who passed the civil service exam and worked in person as a government officer, therefore he knew the bureaucracy like the back of his hand and masterfully took advantage of it during his reign. However, Bang-Won in SFD looks like an unemployed kid playing house with Boon-Yi and Moo-Hyul. His words toward Monk Jeokryong sound childish.

Spot on!!!! I like your explanation.. and also Lady Min's father was Bang Won's teacher... It was the intention of Min je to marry his daughter to bang won..

but i'm really hoping bang won fell in love with his teacher's daughter, that's why he agreed to marry her..

He loved her but he had so many concubine and children with them maybe because it had something to do with the politics.. he doesn't want Min family will took control of the government just because they were relatives of the Queen Wongyeong and King Sejong...In the later Joseon Dynasty, Andong Kim clan took full control of the government..6 Queens of Joseon Dynasty were from the Andong Kim Clan..

i think the 6 dragons are most powerful when working together and occupying the same screen - for me

i really want to see all of them fighting together including YH which to me is a dragon - with the supporting cast as well

while LM is preparing for the court position and supporting BW from that front

for now.. soon they will be divided into two group.. Bang Won's and JDJ's... Later on, another group will appear again maybe to destroy Joseon just like Goryeo... I wonder who helped LIG before, the disappearance of BY's mother, and the assassination of King Gongmin...

This is just my guess, is it possible BY is a Goryeo princess? Her mother assisted Queen Noguk during her childbirth. so maybe they hide BY..

I feel sadden BY's character is getting bashed. I think everyone should appreciate how well this character is written. She is such a strong character, in the end she chooses to fight for a goal with all the dragons to create a new dynasty and people are against her relationship with BW. I think people don't notice how great the writers are doing, creating such powerful roles for women. Its enjoyable compared to the usual cute, at times annoying women characters portrayed in a lot of other kdramas. As for BW running around with MH and BY, I feel he gets the dirty work and puzzles all the pieces together. He sees the bad in everything while his father is doing the work as a politician as well as a Warrior on the front. I believe as the story continues, we will get to see BW as a politician. As for him being a father with lots of kids already? This is about 6FD, the founding of Josean, not BW's family life.

Yes, it's about the founding of Joseon.. The success and ambitions of 6 people.. it's also centered around Bang Won's life, political rival of JDJ, a  husband and a king.... How he ruled as a loving king to the commoners but cruel to the nobles.. and maybe in the end king Sejong as a child will also make an appearance. I'm just hoping 6 flying dragons will not centered around Bong yi and Bang won too much.. I like Bong Yi's character but I don't want to see so many romantic scenes with Bang Won. The focus of the drama will lose.. I have watched the Shine or go Crazy, and I love the story cause it's about the 4th  King of Goryeo but then centered too much around the 4th Future King of Goryeo and his fictional lover ...

Six Flying Dragons Korean drama is once a lifetime chance for me. cause in the other dramas he was viewed as an ambitious and cruel prince in others' characters POV....but we never had a chance to see his POV and the real behind him. I wanna see Bang Won's POV here, his experiences and dedication to become a king ...I wanna see Bang won falling in love with his Queen.. I know it's not possible but still hoping :)

i agree and i was so happy they made BY so strong regardless of trauma and upbringing and in ep 19 it was mention a couple of times how she is amazing and strong - by BW MH & HDH

and in ep 20 we barely seen her - i know that in alot of ep bf she wasnt that prominent but i fear that the bashing - since its a known fact they change the script according to netizan - she will become secondary and just a follower of BW

i like that they made him follow her, why is it unacceptable? bc he was king?

his story is also a fiction he was never in cahoots with JDJ and was only an aider of his father at this point in history  - so its ok to change BW but not to add astrong General like female?

I think it will still the same... she will always be one of the supporters of BW... just a supporter not a concubine or a lover

Dark Lord ?  Taejong is nothing specially evil or brutal by historical king standards.  He is just the winner of history vs JDJ, other ministers scholars.   Just like YSG,JDJ was the winners of the brutal war against Goryeo ministers, generals like Choi Young.  They did kill one of the most famous Korean generals in Choi Young.  From those last nobles, kings of Goryoe JDJ and co are evil villains....

TWD,Maids and co are just dramas that overly play the dark lord side of Taejong.   Sejong would not have become king if not for Taejong.   Also LBW did not kill any of his brothers with the same mother, only exiled them.  He killed the other half brothers who wanted the throne and lost that war to him.

thank you very much for defending him....
