  1. This episode was a big improvement over last week's episode. I have problems with the last five minutes, but before that..

Kang Mo Yeon!! (SHK I bow to thee) Such a wonderful character arc and SHK slayed it with her acting today. So much so that I didn't miss YSJ at all!

The initial denial, the soul crushing grief, anger, acceptance, attempting to move on, all was shown so realistically. Despite her grief, she didn't lose her grip on the world and climbed back to her original post. This shows her resilience. I loved that the writer had her go on with life, rather than renounce it. The volunteer mission in Albania to commemorate his death anniversary was also a nice touch. But I think something got lost on the editing table. Was YSJ's mission in Albania? Which brings me to the final scene..

It was beautifully shot. No question about that. But the writer better have a good explanation up his/her sleeve. Is it that he heard her call sign over the radio and hence rushed to meet her? Is he in some deep undercover op? What made the army declare them dead? I am assuming YSJ must have checked in with his superiors over the year. Unless he is now a spy, there is no need for him to strike out on his own in a foreign country. I can't wait for the explanation and I have a bad feeling that I'll be sorely disappointed.

PS: The shot of KMY and YSJ running towards each other in the desert, did anyone else notice the symbolism? Or maybe I am over analyzing the scene. What came to my mind was God reaching out from above giving hope to mortals who are seeking it. YSJ, the flawless perfect soldier who has a God complex and KMY the poor mortal who is looking for a way to deal with her grief.

But despite his actions in Uruk, one thing is clear: his top priority is his allegiance to his country and his duty to serve his country.

This is his most fatal flaw, and it takes a certain type of woman to accept that. It's clear now that this was the writers' intention from the start.

Loved your comment, everything was spot on regarding whats wrong with episode 14.

I however, don't fault YSJ for putting country first. That's his job and what he chose to do. There is a reason why being a military spouse takes so much courage. Because your other half has pledged his/her life to country first. I suppose he can switch to a desk job within the military, but there is no reason to do it just because he got a steady girlfriend.

I also think YSJ is a far better human being than Joo Won or Kim Tan. KMY too is hands down the best one I have seen in last few dramas. What I like about these two is that they talk to each other and sort out their issues, something the other pair can learn.

regarding the gunshot wound multiple times ---  given enough adrenaline rush- (which YSJ had)  one can get up and still walk and talk despite any trauma in the body--

Believe me -- I've seen it

multiple times - I work in Trauma hospital in New York City .......  You can get a surge of energy -- just like the NK soldier as well -----

You get an adrenalin surge after you flatline? And your heart has to be electrocuted into action?

    Is this zero to hero?

  4. Sadly the writers dropped the plot somewhere on the way back from Urk. Was it due to SJK's injury that they had to do this? If that was the case, I would have preferred YSJ out of commission on a hospital bed while SDY ran the show in his stead. It would at least give him something more to do than mope over MJ constantly.

    1. I really have had enough of SDY/MJ angst. Why don't these two talk TO each other instead of talking AT each other? In the end they both made the other person look like a fool. SDY really needs to get a grip on his inferiority complex, while MJ should wake up from her dreams where its just her and SDY and nothing else.

    2. The writers and the director needs to be aware that people who flatline, don't just start walking minutes later. It pulls you out from the story to see something so jarring. The buildup in episode 13 was so nice, only for it to be ruined in the first 5 minutes. In addition, what does it say of MY as a doctor if she allows her patient to just walk out, when earlier in Urk, she made the commander come in to visit YSJ?

    3. The lane control feature PPL, dangerous! Do not attempt in cities with stop and go traffic.

    4. They are regurgitating the same topics over and over again... SDY/MJ and their struggle to get aprroval is back at square 1. YSJ/KMY too, they should be past the point where she gets angry over him doing his job.

It might sound like I'm ranting but I find it strange that a pre-produced drama can lose the plot like this.

  5. So, this is the time around which I start noticing flaws in the story. So far it has been a string of incidents happening one after the other with moments of levity in between. First was the earthquake, then the virus while Argus and the diamonds float around in the background. As a cohesive story its extremely weak.

So why am I still addicted to it? Because the individual scenes are extremely well done. The earthquake and its aftermath. The interaction between main characters. Their straighttalk. The acting of the entire cast! Supporting characters included. The OST too, when its not intruding on the scenes.

Sorry guys if I am repeating any comments here, but I just read about the spoiler and almost threw away my laptop. After watching the Always MV of Yoon Mi Rae I saw this:

MOD. EDIT: Don't quote pictures, gifs or videos!

When I was watching this MV the previous week, I already found this strange but didnt pay any attention to it. But maybe this rumor is true after all? I am just angry at those people who leaked the rumor, they ruined the whole drama for us! I sincerely hope KES wont take this route, but somehow I am more convinces of this rumor the more I think about it.

Sorry for leaving the pic in, but I want to point out certain things in it. If you look closely at the inscription on the cross, the dates on it are 1910-1982 (youtube in HD resolution). Since we know YSJ was not born in 1910, we can safely say its not his grave.

  7. For those interested in a real life perspective on Korean soldiers, you can read this NYTimes article. It's from 2014, but I think it's still valid today.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/06/opinion/south-koreas-sexist-military.html

Particularly this paragraph for the KMY-YSJ story.

    Quote

The military suddenly lost its stature when the dictatorship ended in 1987. Today, being in the army means living on a modest salary in one of South Korea’s coldest regions near the demilitarized zone. Military men have trouble finding wives: Many young women, accustomed to a comfortable urban lifestyle (or, at least, aspiring to one), have little regard for professional soldiers. And the constant movement of a military life can be tough on children. My father was an officer in the army, and I was forced to change elementary schools six times.

Watching the episode with subs right now. I love MY, and her reasons for rejecting him were so so valid. I applauded her in the opening scene of ep 6. But then when she hears SJ already left, that's where I start to be "annoyed" with how she's handling all this.

He has given you sooooo many chances. This comment of him not giving second chances after she rejected him quite harshly just didn't seem fair. He finally was able to walk away (also because he had to of course) and then she seems angry with him that he actually did. I get her completely, but it's still not really fair of her.

    Still love her to death.

Aut her some slack, she is human like the rest of us. How many of you have let go of a person thinking it was right, only to regret it in hindsight. Off course self-preservation dictates that we publickly maintain it was for the best. This being a drama allows them to meet again. My only wish now is that she gathers up her courage soon enough, lays her cards on the table and not hide being her ego.

  9. I like this episode much more than yesterday's. This was KMY's redemption. Her conversation with YSJ the night before his departure is how rational people think and talk. Till now she felt like a half formed character. The outline was there, but no colours were filled in. How mature of everyone that they immediately grasped that the situation they were in was bigger than their personal issues. It's a big plus that characters here just talk everything out. They may jump to conclusions, but they also apologize if their conclusions are wrong. And they don't sulk or lash out in frustration. I am fine with all the cheese if the characters are solid.

If other drama I might become annoyed with the female lead right now but for this drama I cut Mo Yeon some slack. I mean come on the male lead is not a chaebol who has crazily possessive mother/father or jealousy insane sister/brother or annoying fiance/future fiance but a soldier that have a risk to being kill and potentially die. Yes at the beginning she's interested and respond back to his affection but now slowly she see the reality being soldier. He's hot but his job is dangerous. Not to mention that sometimes he had to leaves and go to the foreign countries for some period. Before this she asked to broke up because its easier to end the relationship before you involve deeply in it. But fate make they meet each other again without she know it. At first she try to acts normal and guarded her feelings but what to do when the man continue to flirting, courting and openly shows his affection and care for her? As a normal woman her heart and feelings feel touch and shaken. I don't blame her if she's feel hesitate about it.

And as for the royal hotness Captain Yoo Shi Jin he must be open to her about his job that become a part of his life. if you want the sexy doctor to accept you, you must be open and share unless you're not serious about it. Woman need some feels of secure in a relationship dude!

i'm happy that they separated for a while so she can thinks seriously about her feelings for him. Actually I want episode that they apart from each other a bit longer to see how she manage and cope the situation without him.

LOL at the royal part :D

I don't think SJ can open up about his mssions. That's against military rules. She just has to deal with it. Just like she can't discuss her patients without violating doctor patient privilege.

  11. Wow! This is an active forum!I just had a quick question about something that left me puzzled in episode 13. I hope people here with some insight into Korean culture can answer it for me.
Why did JH's mom abandon him? It looked like she was really sorry about it. Even her husband was really sorry about it... so then why couldn't they ask him to stay with them? Why did they leave him to his own means?
