  1. Gong Yoo Talks About How He Chooses Acting Projects, Reuniting With His Previous Co-Stars In His Film “Seobok,” And More

Gong Yoo Talks About How He Chooses Acting Projects, Reuniting With His Previous Co-Stars In His Film “Seobok,” And

Gong Yoo recently participated in an interview to talk about his acting career and his new film “Seobok.”

“Seobok” is a sci-fi film about a former intelligence agent named Ki Heon (Gong Yoo) who, for the final mission of his life, is tasked with ensuring the safe transportation of mankind’s first human clone. Park Bo Gum stars as the titular clone Seobok, the target of many forces seeking to steal the clone for themselves.

First off, Gong Yoo talked about his unique filmography. He said, “Due to my filmography, I get asked questions about the difficult topics [of the movies I star in]. I realized that my acting projects are all something that made me think. I don’t know why I ended up choosing projects like this, but I want to appear in movies that make me think and wonder.”

He continued, “Originality is not the only absolute criterion. Although ‘Seobok’ is a movie about clones like the ones you see in Hollywood or foreign works, it’s a topic that has never been properly dealt with in the Korean commercial scene.”

Gong Yoo also discussed reuniting with Jo Woo Jin, Jang Young Nam, and Park Byung Eun in “Seobok.” Gong Yoo previously worked with Jo Woo Jin in “Goblin,” Jang Young Nam in “Finding Mr. Destiny,” and Park Byung Eun in “A Man and A Woman.”

The actor shared, “Park Byung Eun and I met before, and we starred in ‘A Man and a Woman’ together. Because of our shared interest in fishing, we got very close outside of work as well. We naturally teamed up for this movie, so it was very comfortable.”

He continued, “Jo Woo Jin is an actor I really like. It was too bad we couldn’t work together a lot in ‘Goblin,’ but I think he did a great job playing the center role in this movie.”

Then laughing, Gong Yoo said, “Jang Young Nam played my older sister in the movie ‘Finding Mr. Destiny,’ which was my comeback film after I discharged from the military. She’s very respectable, and she’s polite to her junior actors as well. She usually speaks informally to others, but she always uses honorifics with me and is shy around me. I think she’s even more awkward around me after watching ‘Goblin.'”

Gong Yoo also talked about how the release date of “Seobok” was pushed back because of COVID-19. He commented, “Rather than being upset, I thought it was something that I should just accept because it’s something everyone is going through. The movie was released a long time later. The press conference on April 12 felt different from the usual session of talking about the project. I felt less prepared. I’m happy that the movie is finally released, but I think I was a little burdened because it wasn’t released in time. The existence of this movie has already been known to many people, and it seems that expectations have increased because it wasn’t released. I was happy but honestly pressured because there might be a gap between the expectations and the direction the movie wants to go towards or the story the movie wants to talk about.”

“Seobok” was released on April 15 simultaneously in theaters and in CJ ENM’s OTT (over-the-top) streaming platform TVing.

[Herald Interview] Gong Yoo says ‘Seobok’ is thought-provoking film about purpose of life

    http://res.heraldm.com/content/image/2021/04/14/20210414000693_0.jpg

When actor Gong Yoo first read the script for his upcoming film “Seobok,” he felt like it was asking him a question.

“I felt like it was asking me ‘So, what is the purpose of your life?’,” Gong Yoo told local reporters during a joint media interview Tuesday via Zoom. “I could not give an answer to that question. This experience stunned and interested me.”

He explained that he decided to perform for “Seobok” because it was not only written for the sake of entertainment.

“Among the scripts that I received at the time, this was the one that made me feel the agony that the creator had gone through,” he added.

When asked whether he found the answer to the meaning of life after shooting the movie, the actor responded “No.”

“I took the role because I wanted to find the answer to the question, but I came to the conclusion that I cannot figure this out through a single film. I think I will have to search for the answer my entire life,” Gong Yoo said.

“Seobok” introduces Ki-hun (played by Gong Yoo) who is an ex-intelligence agent. He is diagnosed with cancer and finds out that he does not have much time left to live.

One day, Ki-hun receives his last mission from his ex-boss, director of the intelligence agency (played by Cho Woo-jin), to move Seo-bok (played by Park Bo-gum), the first-ever human clone that possesses the secret to eternal life, to a safe place. Through being part of this mission, Ki-hun gets a chance to cure his cancer through treatments created using Seo-bok.

From the beginning of the movie, Gong Yoo’s character Ki-hun does not hide his strong will to live longer.

“Ki-hun’s desire to live longer came to me as a natural feeling that all human beings have,” Gong Yoo said. “I believe that all human beings cannot stay calm when they face their own death.”

For a more in-depth understanding of his character, the actor also discussed a lot about Ki-hun’s background that is not explained in the movie or script with “Seobok” director Lee Yong-joo before the shooting started.

“The director and I talked about all the different medicines that Ki-hun must have taken to live. I imagine that he probably tried both western and eastern medicine.”

Gong Yoo also talked about how he tried to look at the character Seobok, which is played by co-star Park Bo-geum.

“Although Ki-hun saw Seobok’s special power, he still sees Seobok with the eyes of brother or uncle. I think that is why there is a scene where he casually asks him if he is hungry after a quarrel,” Gong Yoo said.

During the interview, he also shared his personal feelings about the character Seobok and the movie.

“In the audience watching the movie, Seobok seemed like God disguised as a child,” he said. Gong Yoo added that he felt like watching God keep on challenging Ki-hun by asking difficult questions.

Toward the end of the interview, the actor was asked what he would do if he got the chance to live forever, and his answer was to give it away to his parents.

“I have been busy working so I did not know that time has been passing by. One day I realized that they became old. ... It was my dad’s birthday a few days ago and (his age) really hit me,” he said.

“Seobok” hits local theaters and OTT platform Tving on Thursday.

Gong Yoo says he doesn't understand why people harm and fight each other so much

Gong Yoo said he doesn't understand why people harm and fight with each other so much.

On April 13th, the actor held an online interview for the upcoming sci-fi film 'Seobok'. In the film, Gong Yoo plays a character who unapologetically displays his desire and fear. When asked about his own desires, Gong Yoo replied, "I don't really understand why people harm and fight each other so much. I try to put myself into another person's shoes whenever I'm in such situations. But there are cases where I still can't understand the other (which could be entirely due to my lack of understanding so I'm a little cautious) and my personal desire is not to be the same person when I meet that type of person."

By the same token, he commented about his personal fears, "From an actor's perspective, we mutually inflict pains on each other in a relationship naturally. So I believe a human being is the 'scariest' being. I'm afraid of getting hurt by people. And acting for the camera is always unnerving."

Meanwhile, 'Seobok' hits theaters on April 15th KST.

  4. (Yonhap Interview) Star actor Gong Yoo hopes his filmography can show who he is

SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- A-list actor Gong Yoo has built a splendid career on the big and small screens in recent years.

All his picks, like the zombie thriller "Train to Busan," the period action thriller "The Age of Shadows" and the fantasy romance TV series "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God," have been the talk of the town and made him one of the most bankable actors in the South Korean entertainment industry.

This time, about two years after his last silver screen project "Kim Ji-young: Born 1982" (2019), his choice was the science-fiction movie, "Seobok," a story about a human clone who possesses the secret to eternal life.

This photo provided by Management Soop shows actor Gong Yoo. (PHOTO NOT FOR SALE) (Yonhap)

This photo provided by Management Soop shows actor Gong Yoo. (PHOTO NOT FOR SALE) (Yonhap)

The 41-year old actor said "Seobok" is full of unanswerable questions about life and death from the beginning.

"Usually, I'm attracted by screenplays that stir my curiosity. I try to ask myself why the writer wants to tell this story," he said in a Zoom interview with Yonhap News Agency and other media on Tuesday.

"After reading 'Seobok,' on the other hand, I received a big question from the screenplay, which asked me why I want to live," he said. "It looked like an easy question, but I couldn't answer to it immediately. And I became curious about the project and the question, so I decided to do this project to respond to it."

In "Seobok," directed and written by Lee Yong-joo, who helmed the hit romance "Architecture 101" (2012), Gong takes the role of Ki-hun, a former agent suffering a fatal cerebral disease who is assigned to move the first human clone, Seobok (Park Bo-gum), to a safer place.

Ki-hun tries to wrap up the mission as soon as possible and treat the daunting disease, while Seobok who comes out of the laboratory for the first time is so interested in the outer world that he makes Ki-hun angry.

Despite the dire chase by secret forces trying to obtain the human clone, the two start interacting more often and openly and exchange questions about life and death.

Ki-hun tells Seobok about his yearslong struggle with the illness and painful memories after betraying his colleague. Immortal Seobok asks him why he wants to extend his life instead of putting an end here and getting out of the pain.

"On behalf of Ki-hun, he sees Seobok as a little brother and sympathizes with his deep agony over endless life," he said. "But for the audience, Seobok stands as a god, who casts harsh questions to a human and the human gives back weak, faulty answers."

Gong said Ki-hun represents a human who is eager to live longer and cannot be nonchalant about his projected death, no matter how difficult and painful his life is.

The actor lost some weight to portray the former agent who has long fought against the fatal disease.

"Ki-hun might have made all-out efforts to survive the fatal disease, like looking for all kinds of medicine and treatment," he said. "I think it's natural and instinctive for us to avoid the ending here but want to extend it."

Although he started the "Seobok" project by seeking an answer to the question about the value and the reason of life, Gong admitted that he needs more time to get closer to the right idea.

Still, he said "Seobok" will convey his efforts to reply to the profound question when looking back on his career some day in the future.

"I think an actor's filmography represents the direction and the course of the acting that an actor has pursued," he said. "I'm filling in my filmography to let people know who I am and how I see the world as an actor."

Meanwhile, "Seobok," one of the most anticipated blockbuster films in South Korea for its star-studded cast and fresh subject of human cloning, is on the verge of an unprecedented experiment for a new method of movie distribution after monthslong delays due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

It will be released simultaneously in theaters and via Tving, a local streaming service, this Thursday, becoming the first Korean title distributed by a major film company to take the two-track approach.

"The current life (in pandemic) is unusual but has become usual. Everybody is going through this tunnel," said the seasoned actor who made his silver screen debut with "My Tutor Friend" in 2003. "I'm pleased that one of my projects is open to public in theaters and via streaming at the same time. I think we are on the bus already."

Everyone’s favourite Train To Busan actor Gong Yoo and Park Bo Gum starrer Seobok will now release on April 15 both in theatres and on TVing, CJ ENM’s OTT platform, according to an interview conducted by Newsen on April 13! While Park Bo Gum is currently serving in the military, Gong Yoo will be the only one taking part in the movie promotions.

‘Seobok’ is a sci-fi film starring the two most loved male actors in the lead, which definitely created a large wave of fans eagerly waiting for it. Originally supposed to release in December 2020, the movie was delayed due to the pandemic but now will finally release! In the interview, the 41-year-old charming Gong Yoo talked about the movie, how it was working with Park Bo Gum and much more! Let’s dive into it.

The story of the film revolves around Ki Heon (Gong Yoo) being tasked with a final mission of ensuring the safe transportation and protection of the first human clone Seobok (Park Bo Gum). As the theme talks about life and death, Gong Yoo said that Seobok was more like a homework assignment for him. He said that Seobok is a movie that makes him think about a problem and participate in it, in order to try to solve it. He also revealed that he had first rejected the offer because he thought that the story was too big for him to convey. However, after talking in detail with director Lee Yong Joo, he finally was ready to play Ki Heon.

Talking about his co-star Park Bo Gum, he explained he at first thought that Park Bo Gum would be no fun because he’s so upright and honest! He also added that the role he’s playing in the movie is of a different kind and will help him expand his spectrum of works he has been doing, after he comes back from the military. He even said that if Park Bo Gum was by his side, he would’ve been less nervous for the press conference, citing that he does feel alone promoting the movies. However, he did get an impromptu phone call from Bo Gum who sounded ecstatic when he heard the movie was finally releasing!

He also talked about how this is the first time he is acting with a junior male actor, while revealing that he didn’t know Park Bo Gum was casted. He has majorly acted with senior actors so this was his first time leading with a junior male actor. People liked their chemistry on set and he hopes that it entertains the viewers too!

On a different note altogether, Gong Yoo talked about his character’s swearing in the movie, adding that he wished he could swear more. He thought about how he had always been playing a nice guy, so he loved this refreshing change!

When asked about his 20th year in the industry, he said that he wasn't keeping count. He found out about this after hearing from his fans! He added that many people have been nagging him to take care of his appearance with laser treatment in advance but he wants to stay fit and healthy without all of those as long as his joints allow him to. He did admit that he didn’t feel the same physically as before but he said he’ll exercise harder.

Fans can watch the movie in theatres or on TVing from April 15 onwards.

  5. (Movie Review) 'Seobok' asks philosophical questions about life, death

The upcoming blockbuster "Seobok" is named after a sorcerer who sought an elixir of life in the ancient Qin Dynasty of China.

Director and writer Lee Young-joo, who returns to the big screen nine years after his hit romance drama "Architecture 101" (2012), portrays the human fear of death and the desire for immortality through a human clone that possesses the secrets to eternal life.

This image provided by CJ ENM shows a scene from

Its beginning follows a common action movie plot. Ki-hun (Gong Yoo) is a retired agent but secretly assigned to move the first human clone, Seobok (Park Bo-gum), to a safe place.

The duo is tracked by a group of secret agents who try to destroy the human clone and Seoin, the company behind the confidential cloning project, that wants to use the human clone as the elixir of life and rule the human world.

But the journey of Ki-hun, who is suffering from a terminal illness and has only one year left to live, and Seobok, an offspring of a DNA modification who lives an eternal life, is not just a blood-splattered escape movie as expected but also a philosophical exploration.

They keep asking questions about the finite life and its ending that every human has to face but a human clone doesn't.

Ki-hun says it is painful to go through life filled with guilty feelings after betraying his colleague a few years ago. Nevertheless, he admits that he doesn't want to end his life here and finds a glimmer of hope that his fatal disease can be cured by Seobok.

Seobok, who knows he is trapped in the endless life, asks Ki-hun whether his entire life is painful and what the fear of death feels like. The clone says he hopes to be meaningful and worthwhile even in his unlimited time.

From this point, "Seobok" is not a typical sci-fi film that shows the creation and the dangerous use of human clones or power struggles over the secret project. It casts philosophical questions about the attitudes toward fear of death and desire for immortality.

The on-screen chemistry between South Korea's two heartthrobs of Gong Yoo and Park Bo-gum, their frequent jokes and humorous tones in dialogue lighten up the film's heavy atmosphere and figurative message.

Also, it has enough eye-catching attractions, including gun fights and car chase scenes, to convince people that the 16 billion-won (US$14.2 million) project is one of the most anticipated films in the yearlong pandemic era.

But the director seems to have lost the film's beauty as a sci-fi blockbuster or a rare Korean title on human cloning to indulge in the philosophical study of human fear of death and mortality.

"Seobok" will be released simultaneously in theaters and via streaming media Tving this Thursday.

  6. Gong Yoo Discusses His Film “Seobok,” What His Co-Star Park Bo Gum Is Like, And More

Gong Yoo recently sat down for an interview to talk about his most recent movie “Seobok.”

Seobok” is a sci-fi film about a former intelligence agent named Ki Heon (Gong Yoo) who, for the final mission of his life, is tasked with ensuring the safe transportation of mankind’s first human clone. Park Bo Gum stars as the titular clone Seobok, the target of many forces seeking to steal the clone for themselves.

    gong-yoo-5.jpg

As a film that revolves around the subject of clones and deals with the topic of life and death, “Seobok” wouldn’t have been easy to film. Gong Yoo commented, “‘Seobok’ is a movie that makes me think and wonder about a problem, and it makes me want to participate in that problem.”

He described “Seobok” as a “homework” and explained, “I refused the offer to star in the film once. I deeply thought about it and decided, ‘It’s too big of a story for me to portray.’ But I was contacted about it once again, and then I met with director Lee Yong Joo to hear the details.”

    gong-yoo-4.jpg

Gong Yoo also talked about his bromance with his co-star Park Bo Gum. Park Bo Gum is currently serving in the military, so Gong Yoo is promoting the movie without him.

Gong Yoo commented, “Park Bo Gum is a very honest and upright person. He’s so upright that it made me think he might not be fun.” Then he added, “In this movie, Park Bo Gum’s eyes are very unlike him, and they’re something he hasn’t showed before. I think ‘Seobok’ will help expand the spectrum of new projects and characters he’ll take after he comes back from the army.”

Gong Yoo continued to talk about Park Bo Gum, saying, “Park Bo Gum is someone who doesn’t reveal his difficulties. He is not the type of person who complains when things get hard. I knew how he felt too. So I told him to express everything and vent.”

Then the actor talked about receiving an unexpected phone call from Park Bo Gum. He shared, “He was so happy that our movie was being released and that we were holding press conference. He said he was nervous too. I think I would’ve been less nervous if he had been there with me. It’s lonely being alone. I thought, ‘He’s watching everything from the army.'”

Gong Yoo admitted he didn’t know he would work with Park Bo Gum, saying, “This is the first time I’ve done a movie alone with a male junior actor. Although I’ve worked with many senior actors before, it’s my first time leading a movie with a male junior actor. People like our teamwork, so I hope we’ll be able to entertain the viewers a bit.”

Next, Gong Yoo talked about swearing in the film. He explained, “It’s pretty much my first time swearing in a project. I did barely any projects with swearing in them. I thought, ‘I only played the nice guy that didn’t suit me,’ and it was refreshing. It was nice to curse freely. People tend to curse in emergencies, so it felt refreshing because it felt like those restrictions were being lifted. I wanted to swear more.”

This is Gong Yoo’s 20th year acting, and concerning that, he said, “I don’t count how many years I worked. I found out it’s been 20 years since my debut through my fans and viewers.”

Then he added, “I don’t feel physically the same as before. But I will continue to exercise hard and take care of my physical strength. People around me tell me to take care of [my appearance] with laser, but I won’t do that. They nag me to do it in advance. I think they’re worried that I’ll ‘disappear’ [from the industry] in a moment. But as long as my joints allow me to, I will keep my body healthy by keeping fit.”

    gong-yoo-2.jpg

The actor shared, “I take a lot of vitamins. I take 13 of them. I don’t take 13 different kinds of vitamins, but five of them are the same.” Then laughing, he commented, “Even if I don’t take vitamins, I’m still healthy and young. So my fans don’t have to worry about me.”

Gong Yoo revealed he isn’t the type to look back on his past and said, “I feel the preciousness of the time given that day, and I think that I should do my best without regret in it.”

    gong-yoo-1.jpg

Seobok” was supposed to premiere in December, but was pushed back due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Korea. It will now premiere on April 15 simultaneously in theaters and in CJ ENM’s OTT (over-the-top) streaming platform TVing.
