  1. What the f?! Eagles? I'm.. someone please explain this!

*edit* What's hilarious about this is that I wanted to see what the fans are saying on the Eagles forum, and it literally shut down. Usually that only happens in the 4th quarter of a late regular season game/playoff game.

  2. is a mac worth getting? im an engineering student and most of the programs i need are not mac supported (at least to my knowledge)

Not sure what kind of engineer you are, but I bought a Mac right before I entered college in 2004. I must say it was the most inconvenient decision I've ever made for college. I was never able to use anything besides Word.

But in April, before the beginning of my last semester in college as an EE, I bought a new MacBook and never looked back. I got Parallel Desktop working with a bunch of engineering programs, and I kid you not.. it worked just as well as if I had a PC. I programmed with a microcontroller, used Matlab (then found out that there is a mac version for Matlab as well), got PSpice working, and a whole loads of other things.

Basically, with Parallel's desktop, it is just as good as having a PC.

This was back in April before Apple came out with a new lineup of MacBooks, and I basically got the lowest specs besides an extra 2 GB of RAM. So with a 2.4 GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM, I was able to watch a movie off of the DVD player, have my iTunes download NPR podcasts, research my project off the web using Safari, ran Microsoft Excel, used Parallel's desktop with a program called MikroC, and had a USB connection with the program that was working inside Parallel's desktop, all at the same time. That's pretty powerful if you ask me. It was basically a dream come true.

I didn't mean this in a spokesman/salesperson kind of way. I'm just telling you of my experiences as an engineer with a MacBook. My MacBook can do almost anything that I want it to, besides cook my dinner and make me money.

  3. What is your favorite mac program, either part of the OSX or a third party software? My favorite has to be stacks. It has revolutionized the way I work. It is absolutely amazing.

Parallels desktop would have been first, but at some point I realized that I really don't use Windows XP for anything besides school, and even then I already have found programs on the Mac that can do the work for me. <--- Lazzzzzzy.

  4. I could imagine!! After I upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4, I helped a friend out with her iBook that was running 10.3. It was foreign to me! Haha. I can't even imagine going back to 10.3 now....

You may have figured this out, but to change the Time Zone, go to System Preferences, click Date & Time, choose Time Zone, and click roughly the location of where you want to set the Time Zone for. :D

Ah, yes, I figured it out last night. Thanks anyhow.

Although there are a lot of new features, it isn't a drastic difference between operating systems.

  5. My PowerBook died recently. The hard drive just crashed and whoosh, everything was gone. Luckily, sometime during the fall, I backed up many of my important files. Now, I may not be updated with my music, but the programs that I've used for years now are backed up, as well as the majority of my pictures. I would have been greatly depressed if I had lost my pictures. Oh so precious pictures. As I shuffled through my old files on my "backup hard drive" (also known as my old 3G 30GB iPod), I couldn't help but to mutter to myself, "Oh you are so smart. So, so smart. SO, so smart." Hah!

So I jumped the gun and purchased a new MacBook. I love it thus far. Of course, the two greatest challenges for me right now is: A. Trying to adapt to the new operating system. I went from 10.3 (What is that, Panther?) to 10.5. According to some Mac enthusiasts, the jump is monumental. I don't disagree. B. Trying to figure out how to change the fricken time zone. For the past hour, I've been keeping track of what time it is in pacific time zone. That's great for when/if I move there, but currently, it is a pain to keep thinking, "Oh wait, it is only 2. Whew~"

    Mac OS X 10.5

    2.4 GHz

    4 GB SDRAM (Woo!)

    130 GB Hard Drive

I'm glad that with the student discount, purchasing the extra 2 GB of RAM was actually worth it. It feels nice that my computer just flies by now whereas merely two weeks ago, I would have to smack my forehead in disappointment that merely turning my laptop on is a chore.

Today, I am grateful for finally appreciating the subtle things in life. Why do people only appreciate life when they are close to death? That is the perspective I hope to change.

  7. I want to buy a new Mac laptop so badly that it hurts! I purchased my Mac nearly 4 years ago, right before I entered college, swearing that it'll last me the entire four years as I try to justify the price for it. Granted, while it has given me three wonderful years, the past few months have made my heart ache. It is not as fast as it use to be, and it struggles to perform simple tasks that were routine. I've tried to upgrade the operating system twice, but it could never complete the installation as there were errors that prevented it (perhaps that was the start of the downfall).

Now I find myself surfing Apple's store and staring at its price. "I could do it! I could do it if I really tried," I'd tell myself. *scoffs* Like I even have a chance. At the moment at least.

I love my Mac, but I inhibited the development my education in my major for purchasing it. In my major, nearly every single important program uses Windows XP as its main platform. If I were to self-study, I'd have to be on campus for every single moment, and that's not entirely productive. Now I'm looking at the new Macs and its Windows capabilities, and I salivate at the possibility of using my Mac at home and work on the development boards at the same time. *salivates*

  8. I also feel hunting deer, rabbit, and geese/quail for sport is barbaric. Imagine shooting ppl dead for fun as sport? No punishment there. Why not condemn those people? America makes no sense.

My take on why there is a difference is because hunting is a tradition that has been practiced since the beginning of time of humans. Not saying that everything that was practiced in the past isn't vulgar, but hunting has a long tradition that has survived many, many generations. As for dog fighting, dog fighting itself is gory and brutal as (usually) two malnourished dogs are pitted against each other until one of them has been injured badly or, worse, dead.

Now, is it a sport like Stephan Marbury said? Geez, that's a really difficult question. I remember thinking about this last night, and I immediately thought that it isn't. That's just not what a sport should be. However, wouldn't you call wrestling a sport? What about mixed martial arts competitions? What about boxing? Hell, this is an NFL thread.. isn't it barbaric for us to put 21 players onto a field of grass and run against each other at a force that has severely injured thousands, maybe millions of lives in the past century? There are a lot of sports that are vulgar and crude, yet most people don't bat an eye.

No matter how you put it, this Vick controversy is one of the biggest any sport has faced.

I think that when innocent animals are malnourished, put into danger, and are killed for sport, the person or people involved should be chastised. Why isn't hunting as controversial sport as dog fighting is? Maybe because dog fighting is illegal, and it is a closed-door, underground event that is thought of as mysterious and sketchy, whereas hunting is a televised, legal "sport". Most likely it is because dogs are thought of as man's best friend; dogs just aren't suppose to be fighting; dogs are pets or workers, not game. How terrible of a person can Vick be if he can treat such revered pets in such a poor manner? (not my words, but I'm sure that's what people are thinking)

Also, while Vick isn't the crime boss in this controversy, he is the biggest name. Authorities are making an example out of him. Is that fair? I don't know who said it, but.. don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

  9. I strongly agree. Society as a whole are like puppets. They loved him when he performed for them and when he's commited a crime he is hated and criticized as if he killed someone. How many ppl in society are 100% innocent? Who has never done a crime in their life whether it be petty theft or something more serious? Get realistic here. Like everyone else, though, I do not condone dog fighting, but his crime wont go unpunished. After he does his time, I believe ppl should welcome him back with open arms and help him get back on his feet and learn from his mistakes (which he will have a lot of time to think about in the slammer). I also believe he should be given a 2nd chance at playing again. How many players in the NFL have broken the law to some extent and still given the right to play? And it should be noted that Vick is a 1st time offender. He should be given a chance to redeem himself after doing his time to come back and get his life back together along with hours of community service. It's just the right thing to do in my honest opinion.

Quoted by Stephen Marbury of the NY Knicks:

"I think it's tough," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors."

"There is no list for which animals should be killed and which shouldn't. I love animals and none of them should be harmed. However, we don't react the same when other animals are being killed for sport or the sake of human pleasure."

Just because it is impossible for someone to be completely civic throughout his life does not mean he cannot condemn Michael Vick for his crimes. Just because I stole $5 does not mean I'm not allowed to bash and criticize Michael Vick for what he did.

Yes, you are right. Fans are very fickle. But again, he owned property where he knowingly allowed dog fighting to exist. How could you not condemn his actions? Dogs are very sacred in the western culture. To a lot of people, dog fighting as a sport is as barbaric as pitting two innocent people into a cage to fight until death (note: whether or not it actually is like that does not defer the point that I'm trying to make).

And dog fighting is very different than hunting for sport. Hunting for sport does not place two innocent animals to fight against each other. Again, it is barbaric.

  10. Let's be honest, Vick isn't the smartest guy out there. I mean, if he thinks he's going to walk away from all this, after the FBI FOR A FACT found cages at vick's house, FOR A FACT foud dog fighting gear, FOR A FACT found dog KILLING gear, and now that his "boys" are jumping ship to testify against him, game over i say.

"For a fact", Michael Vick has not been proven guilty that he was in charge, condone, or present during any dog-fighting related allegations. That is what the trial is for.

"Game over" you say? Well.. I'm glad your career is not in law.

well this whole michael vick thing is soo stupid. i mean there are more major problems in the nfl that is going on besides this just like pacman jones how he gets in trouble soo much. people in the nfl do far worse then dog fighting. i mean yeah dog fighting isnt right at all n vick should be punished if he is conviticed but like i said people in the nfl do far worse in their private lives its just they havent been caught while vick has been.

I really don't know how you came to that thought. Maybe you think that all, most, or some people with riches do terrible things. While it may be true, I have no clue how you were drawn to that conclusion. Yes, the Michael Vick issue has brought to light that someone with lots of money can do terrible things, but I'm not going to say that there are some people in the NFL who has done similar or more atrocious things. That's just unfair to those in the NFL. One person should not ruin the reputation of every person in the NFL, other major sports, or upper-class people in general.

yea i agree with u. i mean i didnt litterally think it wuz stupid. it wuz like a figure of speech. i mean yea killing dogs is wrong dont get me wrong on that but i mean i think the dog fighting part got way to many hype n stuff. remember the media always takes little things n blows them up alot. yea im kinda glad to see the falcons move on with this. i think joey has a good chance.

this one is th epic. yea ur right dog fighting is wrong n killing them is wrong but dont u find nfl players rapping people n wen the media or wen the public finds out we are like yea yea wutever if its just a no name player. for example some one on any team gets convicited of rapping a person n he is a 3rd or 4th string player the public would be like yea yea wutever n blow it off but if someone like vick (which already got caught), tom brady, or ne starting qb for a team gets convicited of rapping some one everyone would be like WOW, OMG he deserves to be cut or be put in jail but the real fact is that they all should be treated the same no matter if a 4th string or a starter. so what makes a first string more important then a 4th string wen it comes to crime n stuff.

    I think you mean 'raping'.

But you bring up a really good point that I wanted to point out. Michael Vick has not been convicted of a crime. He is only accused of committing these crimes.

However, the problem is that in the minds of the public opinion, Michael Vick is guilty. I think it was irresponsible of every journalist in America to blatantly accuse Michael Vick before he even had a chance to defend himself in the court of law. Why did they do it?

You hear some of the details of the events that occurred in Mike Vick's house, and you literally become disgusted. You think to yourself, "My god, how could a person do that?" Right after the gory details were released, the public demanded that Vick not proceed with his career at the moment. He was scorn immediately. Protesters, with PETA leading the way, marched everywhere possible to stop him from playing. People labeled Vick guilty without the time of day. Nobody wanted to hear his excuses, because they felt as though there would be nothing that he could say that can excuse him from his monstrosity.

Sponsors are pulling his merchandise off of their line, and a chain of events has unfolded where NFL memorabilia companies are pulling anything related to his name. Reebok has pulled his jerseys from retail stores, and Upper Deck has decided not to publish memorabilia.

I'm sitting here, dumbfounded, thinking when in the world has he been proven guilty? Whether he is guilty or not, nobody deserves the treatment that he has endured. This is exactly what is wrong with the public media in America. People are so quick to judge a person that they don't give them a chance to defend themselves.

And why is Vick such an easy target? Because he was never the model NFL citizen. He played erratically on the field. He flipped the bird at the crowd in the stands-- his own fans, let me remind you. He never won the Super Bowl, or was held up high in glory like some other players has. And maybe you can even say it was easy to target him because he is black. The point is: He is an easy target. He is a common enemy. How do you sell papers? How do you generate more visitors to your website? When you publically scorn a common enemy, because people like to read about a disgraced common enemy.

That's right. I'm blaming the public media for this circus. Because of the public media in America, a man has lost his right to defend his own name. Guilty or not, he does not deserve the treatment that he has faced. It is unfair to him. This is not what America is all about.

I don't condone his actions. I've never been a big Michael Vick fan-- I almost hate the guy actually. But my bias against him does not mean I've lost perception of the problem that has risen.

  11. I use to have roughly 4000, with about 500 or so that I'm sure wasn't synched up with my iTunes. I went on a deleting rampage a few weeks ago, trying to delete anything that I don't listen to or don't foresee myself listening to (it is like going into your high school closet-- a lot of, "What the hell was I thinking?!").

Now I have about 2500 songs, and I'm quite comfortable with my collection to where I can randomly pick songs to listen to. However, I'm one of those anal people who likes having the entire album instead of just a few songs, so I have a bunch of fluffers. I like to keep the entire albums because sometimes I like one song from an album, and then decide months later to give the rest of the album another try (if I didn't like it the first time around). Also, it looks a bit more organized.

I also go crazy and have each song with its correct artist spelling, album, genre, and star rating. Why? Because it just looks so much neater that way! And it doesn't take nearly as much time as it seems. Every time I get a new song or album, I fix everything immediately. It is like organizing your room by always putting things where it should go instead of leaving things around and saying "Oh I'll clean it up later", and then sooner or later the room would look like a tornado went through it.

  12. Is apathy easier for guys?

Studies from researchers at universities have shown that females are more empathetic than males.

So is apathy easier for guys? On a large scale, yes. However, don't be misled to think that men are always apathetic or more apathetic than woman.

  13. Do guys like blunt girls? I'm curious on this one.

It depends on which way the girl is blunt. If a girl is blunt because she is confrontational and egotistic, then people, not just guys, won't really favor her. If a girl is blunt because she says it like it is (much like me), then why not like her?

  14. I'm sure it has been said somewhere in this thread, but the title has a double negative.

The word 'saddest' already indicates 'most sad'. The adverb (or is it adjective?) 'most' in this case would be redundant.

Yes, I am the new grammar sheriff around here. ^_^

  15. The Chargers are changing their uniforms again? They sure do want to sell new jerseys!

Let's see.. they had the white and dark navy blue jerseys. Then they had a light, kind of like a sky-blue jersey. I think they also had a throwback, or that could have been the sky-blue jersey. Now they are changing their uniforms. I'd sure be pissed if I were a Chargers fan who just spent $300 for an authentic Chargers jersey.

I hope to God that the Eagles don't join the bandwagon and start piling up millions of alternative jerseys or alter their jersey completely. That would drive me nuts. Well, I don't actually wear football jerseys (something about a grown man wearing a football jersey outside a football occasion bothers me to no end).

Ok, if it was a cute girl wearing a football jersey, then lets have it! I remember passing by this girl wearing a Browns' jersey, and I stared at her as she walked past, then away from me. A BROWNS jersey! Girls in football jerseys are just damn cute.

  16. Well, I was on Yahoo Sportspage when I first read that Livingston dislocated his knee and will be out for practically a year, and as I read it, it sounded like he just landed awkwardly. I was curious to how the injury looked, since he tore three ligaments. I mean, how could he land a little awkwardly and tear three ligaments? It had to be on youtube.

Yuck.. it was. When I saw the injury, I thought, "What the heck? He didn't just fall. He collapsed!"

No, it was not the grossest injury I've ever seen. Two others come to mind. Willis McGahee's injury in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl where Miami played Ohio State. Also another injury where a kickboxer kicked his opponent, and his leg shattered. Immediately after his leg made contact, his leg just flailed like rubber. Of course, Livingston's injury might as well look worse than the other two. I mean, the guy just landed like he did the other million times, but this time, he just fell all the way down.

    Gross.

If there are any words of encouragement.. Willis McGahee busted out his knee very severely as well, and he has become the star running back of the Buffalo Bills. Livingston's career is not over, which would be a damn shame because he really is so young (and remember, he came straight out of high school, so it isn't like he has a college to go to or anything). Also luckily for him, the NBA does not allow a team to straight up cut a player. Livingston will receive all of the money from the contract he signed as if he were healthy (I think there might be an injury clause, but for the most part, it isn't a huge portion).

  17. The Bears are holding their own.. though you can sort of see it starting to slip away. Two quick TDs, but their offense have stalled a lot. Part of it was due to field position (I think they had just two or three drive starting past their 30 after their two TDs), and part of was due to very conservative play. Not many shots down the field, a lot of runs up the middle, not a lot of aggressive play.

If the Bears want any chance in beating the Colts, then they will have to figure out that they have to play to win, not play to hold a lead or hold the Colts close. You want to minimize Rex Grossman's losses (because, lets face it, the guy is turnover-prone), but it is the Super Bowl. If you are going to risk all of your marbles, then this is the game to do it.

You do not want your young, relatively weak quarterback losing the game for you, but your defense hasn't exactly stalled the Colts on every drive either. I think the Colts must have had seven or eight drives, and the Colts drove down the field four of those times (one of them being a missed field goal by Vineteri at the end of the half -- very shocking!). Lovie Smith.. I KNOW you're on Soompi during halftime. Take my advice!

I said it before, and I'll say it again.. with bad weather, it is anybody's game.

  18. I swear, this has truly been the weirdest off-season so far (well, off-season for every team no longer in the playoffs). Coach talks has dominated the air waves!

  19. I'm actually very excited to see Mike Tomlin coach the Pittsburgh Steelers. The guy really sounds like a Tony Dungy/Lovie Smith type of coach a with very similar personality (and, *cough* Dungy and Smith are both going to coach in SB41 :P ).

I'm not a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, but I do envy how historic that franchise is, especially with their head coach situations. Only in Pittsburgh, I guess.

  20. 1. running near your own endzone is very standard, but obviously the running game wasn't working for them. like 25-30 carries combined and they had like 44 yards? i wouldn't be very confident with that either. and no. running 1st and 2nd does not always work. (g.r.e.g.k.n.a.p.p) teams will destroy you with their defense the second that they find out.

    2. i think the only reason bush got the ball when deuce was hot because they needed to get bush some useless carries or else he'll probably feel under-utilized. (if that's even a word.) but yeah id probably feel like id have to give bush a certain amount of carries each game, and to switch it up so that the defense are on their heels (instead of just pounding it with deuce over and over) sounds smart idealistically, even if deuce is on fire at the time. just didnt work out fo them.

    3. yeah seriously, i thought the first time that Caldwell was like O_O from droppin gsuch an easy pass, but after the 2nd tim eand seeing the same shot from like 3 different angles, i noticed that they were HUGE. god.

Once again, it doesn't matter if the run has been effective all game long or not. The point is to gain several yards, whether that'd be 2 or even 3 yards, to give yourself space to throw the ball (as evident when Brees sort of ran out of room in the backfield). Now, yes, the defense can figure out that the Saints would run the ball, but that doesn't mean a thing. You can figure out what play the other team is running and still won't stop them (think back last week to when the Eagles stuffed 8 men in the box to stop the run, and still couldn't).

I don't think Payton gave the ball to Bush to keep him happy. All season long, the two outwardly voiced to the media that they were more than happy to share the workload. I mean, just read some of the articles that were written about the two, and you would realized that they really were team players.

  21. No, are YOU kidding ME? The Bears showed blitz for the most part to put pressure on Brees. That completely closed up gaps in the middle. When the Saints actually tried to run, the Bears stopped it. Why would you stop passing when it's worked for you the entire game? If it's not broken, don't fix it. Well, it seems like every coach isn't as "smart" as you...or as dumb, when they're at the 5yd line. Had the Saints ran, and failed, it would've been either a safety or a loss of two or more yards. It's not exactly the best place to run Mr. "I'm a football genius". We can bring up "what ifs" all day long about the Saints' running game. Point is, the Bears rendered the running game, useless.

Run blitz and pass blitz are two different types of blitzes. You really can exploit each one by doing the opposite of the type of blitz.

I don't know what game you were watching, but the Saints passing offense (or any kind of offense for that matter) wasn't clicking the entire game. For nearly an entire first half, the Saints struggled to move down the field. They had two or three drives of productive passing, but for the most part, the Saints were not throwing the passing game as efficiently as you think. The "don't stop passing if it isn't broken" idea is very off.

I also don't know how much football-IQ you have, but running near the goal-line is a very standard play. What you do is you run to pick up as many yards as you can in order to give you space to pass the ball, which in effect, would get you outside your own endzone. Yes, if the Saints had ran the ball, they could have loss a few yards and had a safety, but you cannot expect to lose yardage every time you run the ball, especially considering that the Saints have Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush. Also, the Saints were on their 5 yard line (if you don't believe me, check the box-scores on ESPN.com, Yahoo.com, Sportsline.com, etc). Running the ball on your 5 yard line is not a dangerous play at all!

Sean Payton is not a terrible play-caller, but you do have to question his calling sometimes. Last week, he went away from Deuce when Deuce was on a roll, and it seemed like a terrible idea giving it to Bush when Bush fumbled the ball. This week, although the running game was not as efficient as it was in the past, Payton went away from the run all day.

  22. actually no,

supposedly 30 percent of the league does it, but thats not the point.

it was totally stupid of him to try to think that he could get on wtih the bottle in the first place..

he threw it out, but then security decided to go dig it back up because he was reluctant to give it up at first, and it happened to be the only bottle in there because the garbage was recently cleaned out..

and yes, the falcons' offseason is going pretty well thanks

Do you have a source for that information? I don't ever remember reading that security dug up his bottle in a trash can after Michael Vick threw it out.

  23. If the yanks did that at fenway, the fight would be on espn for the next 48hrs. San Diego is sending 9 guys to the pro bowl. Bellichick could very well be the coach if the pats win this Sunday. Another reason to root for them.

Perhaps it is another reason to root for them, but it is not a reason to excuse them.
