  1. africandramalover said: I've been doing my research in screenwriting and I think I understand why some of us were not too happy with the end. One writer defines the final step of a story as, (I've copy pasted) "Step 12: Complete (Return with the Elixir) When you watch the 100m Final at the Olympics, you don’t go home after the race is run. You stay for the medal ceremony. That’s what this sequence is all about. We’ve just witnessed some heroics at the climax; now we want to stick around to soak up those overwhelming emotions." I think we were slightly disillusioned with the final episode because we didn't get enough time to soak up the glory of the triumph over SeoHan and the fire of their unrestrained and unrestricted love. We knew the bad guys had been taken down, but after the scheming that happened along the way, we needed to see it. The ending was left up to us to decide whereas we would have preferred to revel in seeing OHWs victory. The best way could have been a reunion after 1.5 years, where we know for sure that she paid for her crime and now she's free and divorced and ready to play the piano and stumble around Sun Jae's apartment. ....or a better one in Gangnam. (And live on that stack of money that no one could trace) A Wife's Credentials had the perfect ending where the bad guys met their doom and we were left with no doubt that they'd been punished. I've never seen a better takedown! Maybe the writer didn't want to repeat the literal "type" of ending. ....dunno. What do y'all think?

  2. Thanks @gretac‌ !!

As a side note, I'm watching shining inheritance (I won't even bother capitalising the title) and I'm just about to throw in the towel at episode 3.....so many tropes!! 6hr amnesia, bad hair on the male lead, nosebleed from working hard....... SLA ruined me!!

Maybe you would like to watch Misaeng

  3. Last spring when we were coming to the end of this drama being aired, we talked about meeting again at another thread sometime and what shows coming up would be interesting. I remember that the remake of the Japanese Nodome Cantabile was mentioned because it would be having a lot of classical music. Have any of you from this thread been watching that one, and what do you honk of the treatment of the music compared to Secret Love Affair? It has been renamed to Tomorrow Cantabile.

  4. I am having a problem, and I think it might've happened just after the update. But it might've started before. When I am on a Soompi thread - like one of the dramas and want to go back to the main drama page and check another thread - if I push the backspace button, I get kicked out of being logged in. And when I try to login again it won't let me. But if I don't push the back button and just click under the reply box where it says "dramas and movies" then I stay logged in and I am fine. This must be a bug. Has anyone else got that problem? Do you know what I need to do about it?

  5. Welcome, @africandramalover ! We are happy to have new friends here. Several of us, including me, were pulled into Soompi by SLA. Our first place to post. I have branched out to comment on other dramas, but always come back here because it's home. You make friends with people you interact with, even if it's on the web and not real life. How fun to find cultural similarities in countries you thought were very different! I guess that is one reason we all watch the dramas, we connect somehow. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I did not want to watch episodes 16 again. The first time I watched it I was quite upset and kind of in shock that she ended up going to jail. All the stress with the chairman's family and the prosecutors and the trial and then the jail. I went around for a few days feeling like the time Mr. Spock got killed off in one of the Star Trek movies. How can you do that to a main character? I could not accept it as a happy ending. It was at least a week before I got over being angry at the show. My husband thought it was an appropriate ending and was surprised I hated it. After a while when I read everybody's comments I decided it was okay but not the best. So I quit thinking about it but I do not want to watch it again

  7. Haha! I watched parts of episode 15 over a lot of times when I was writing the parody. I half expected things to happen that I had made up. Like when Hye won put her laptop in the water and stood up, I thought Kang should be there with the cops. And when she took her USB out of the speaker I thought of her taking lots of things out of it like Mary Poppins with her carpet bag. Funny parts: The chairman saying that Mme Han smelled like a bag of musk. Young woo rushing around to straighten up her apartment and sticking a large lamp shade over the top of the small one. Seon Jae calling out: are you watching? To the men sneaking around the parking garage following him and Hye won. Mme Baek telling Mme Han that even her daughter, who only goes to school once a week, knows about the scandal. And speaking of the nasty Richgirl,The part where she sits down to play the piano with the Quartet, says she will replace Seon jae, and starts plunking. That's pretty good too. I was pretty happy that there were so many cute parts of the next to the last episode, which is usually pretty grim.

  8. These episodes are also where Sec Wang starts getting a little bit larger part. In Ep 13, when HW gives Mme Han back the USB, Wang talks to her and hugs her to make all nicey-nicey. We see that she has a book on mahjong. Is this the first time? Then in Ep 14, Wang goes to the party and reports all her little secret agent information to Mme Han. She gives the nice secretary an order to bring her some tea, just to flex her power. Then she asks Mme Han what to do about all the calls coming in (about the articles defaming HW) and Mme Han says to figure it out herself. She goes back to her mahjang book. It made me think: fiddling while Rome burns. Haha. She was annoying but kind of a funny sideline during a time of the show which was mostly depressing. Ah, little slimball Sec Wang. She thought she was so clever. Not.

  9. One scene that I didn't think was clear is the one where HW meets the Snake around a coffee table. There is a paper with numbers on it and they choose one and then he tears the paper up and puts it into his paper coffee cup. Were they planning a payoff for getting the chairman out of jail? The next scene after that was a row of black cars, and then Chairman was home complaining he hated jail. It wasn't the payoff for her to take the fall  because that was the next scene, when the chairman gave her the money himself.

[edit] I saw that @dualnon has already brought this one up. I didn't see it before. It looks like we both have the same guess.

And after the pottery scene, I liked the little touch where they show SJ walking home, so dejected, slumped over, plodding, no spring in his step at all. His posture and the way he walks shows it all.

  10. Perhaps the reason HW can't stare down DM is that she feels like she is wronging DM. She's married and having an affair, which is involving a much younger man, and is stealing DM's man to boot. DM is an honest character. You gotta love her. When she talks to SJ she says: If she (HW)  leaves all that corruption and goes to you, then I'll accept it. She looks distressed to say it, but she's full of heart.

They threw out a lot of red herrings that we tried to figure out but went nowhere. Like the hidden camera and the pregnancy hints.

About Chairman giving the money to HW, she made quite a face and I'm sure she knew it was a payoff. That's why she hesitated taking it.

One reason it was suspenseful downloading the files was that all this time they had been giving us little glimpses of her putting something in the hidden safe. We all thought it was jewelry, but it was her USB. So now she gets it out and we get a good look at it and what she's doing with it. BTW it's odd that they have to package everything so elaborately. HW has to put the USB into a felt jewelry case, she can't just hold it and hand it over.

I also loved the scene where she stands up to Snake Lawyer Kim. She gives him such a steady challenging look and says, what makes you think I'm going to roll over and play dead?

  11. I watched episode 13. That starts with DM coming to talk to HW at her office. Why is HW so afraid of her when the last episode she was able to completely turn Mme. Han and YW inside out?and yet she is so afraid that she cringes and cries and then faints. They have to call in the nurse.A side issue of that scene is that Mme. Han comes in to check on things and takes a quick look at the ceiling. This indicates she might have secret cameras up there taking pictures in the office, but this idea is not followed up and we never find out.

  12. mdj101 said: Hello Everyone,
Finding myself with lots of time between drama episodes and wandering around  online looking for something to appeal to me, I happened upon old reviews of SLA, written in April (2014). I had seen them in July and even entered a comment, but they seem new to me now.. I would erase it , if I could, since it sounds like I did not at that point fully appreciate  those reviews or the drama!  But the blog writer, achillesbriseis, had an amazing understanding of what SLA was all about. For some unknown reason, the blogger stopped writing after Episode 5.   What  a shame, I thought, since that person noted and gave personal interpretations of matters that we in the Forum and in the Blog have been considering and discussing all this time.  And without benefit of the script, the director's interview,  etc. that we have had since April!
Just in the review  (dated April 10, 2014)  of Episode 5, the writer made two very interesting comments.  If these have already been mentioned here previously, please be understanding because I forget things so easily and have absolutely NO SYSTEM for cataloging and finding DATA  here at all, but I imagine some of you, such as @docster6,  having  wondrous ways of tapping info. when you need it!     NB:... I am digressing like crazy, but I will soon get to the point......I think.
The two "new" points (at least , I think they are new) are about the"punishment kiss" and the "Twinkle, Twinkle" melody:
    1. " Twinkle, Twinkle"  --- If we discussed the meaning of the lyrics of the little song, I don't recall.  The blogger explored how "the star" could be a metaphor for either HW, SJ, or apply to both at the same time!. I never looked at the actual lyrics as meaningful in themselves.
    2.   "punishment kisses"  --- Administered by HW to SJ in the Practice room --- the blogger draws a comparison to the first "garage kiss" with insights that made lots of sense to me.  The connection between the two kisses being the emotions the  "garage kiss"  awakened in HW's whole being.....surprise, pleasure, anger, fear, etc.  and all of these at once and at a subconscious level at first.    The "punishment kiss", which comes suddenly and without any logical justification  at first,   could be interpreted as  a reflexive  response from those primitive reasoning areas of HW's brain.  An unconscious reaction by HW feeling a sudden desire to make SJ feel, or know,  the same  tumultuous emotions she has been having since his "garage kiss".         SIMPLE VERSION:...To make him "suffer" what she had "suffered --- another way to phrase it.   Just made a whole lot of sense the way the writer described it.. Suddenly  I could see how a kiss could be thought of as a "punishment", when even Hye Won herself hadn't consciously thought of it either!
Thank you all for reading some of my recent comments which have been quite rambling attempts to explain some of my obscure ideas r/t SLA.  If I wait for total clarity about my idea, I fear that I will never make the comment.
The blogger's online site is  http://feedingmyprocrastination.wordpress.com .  The blogger even picked up on the significance of the music selections in SLA. and so much more ---- after only 5 episodes, too.  So well worth re-reading, since I did not fully appreciate the reviews the first time. I think the writer posted to this Forum in the past, too.  I remember seeing that blog on a comment long ago.

  13. Sometimes the counters are off. I know I have visited Seungshinl's profile page as well, so that should be at least 3 visitors. But I bet a month or so later it might be updated. When I was doing the promotion work, I also notice the counters sometimes delay a little. Well, at least we know what "visits" is meant to do, according to Endeavor of ADMIN. He is a pretty smart guy, he answered a lot of my questions patiently. There was a huge problem with the "quote" function on another thread, he taught me how use the rightmost icon on the editing toolbar, the <> function. It allows you to write your comments in HTML format. Pretty cool.

Thank you everyone for the effort in tracking that down! I had tried looking on a couple of Soompi threads like the rules thread, and couldn't find anything.

  14. @shamrockmom‌, that's cute you found a handkerchief like the one in SLA. (And totally sweet you give your son's friends rides home.) The thing I don't understand is why you should feel guilty about buying a thing because it reminds you of a show. What about all the geeks who dress up for ComicCon? It's all part of the fun. I have a Star Trek bathroom. The shower curtain looks like a transporter backdrop and the towels are printed like Star Trek shirts. My husband saw it all somewhere and bought it for me for Christmas. It caused quite a sensation last summer at my son's wedding dinner, when the bride's family passed my phone around to look at the picture.
