    Part 3

Fire is a queer creation. As old as time, long before any other state of matter could arise, it has endured and will do so until the universe finishes serving its purpose. Maybe even beyond then.

Thus it is ironic indeed, that Science, for all its brilliance and omnipotent comprehension, still hasn’t learnt the true nature of fire. We know how to create it, tame it, use it, kill it… but despite having had eons to analyze, none really ‘know’ it. It does not follow our rules, does not care for our predictions and despite the coaxing done by gazillion scientists who have tried to tempt it with their customized version of guidelines, this element still remains a mystery in a world that no longer believes in magic. Living in such times where we are taught that all things can be logicized and have specific reasons, fire reminds us one of the most ancient truths: That which belongs to the heavens is not for earth to discern.

Our ancestors revered this truth and associated it with realms beyond worldly powers. God’s heart is a blazing furnace, sacrifices are offered into pyres that consecrate and reach them to deities, legends state that a flaming torch had to be brought down to earth so that humankind could walk upright. Thus in the course of history, if our first great triumph was learning to create fire, it is only befitting that nature deemed our redemption in it as well.

That is why Love- the greatest emotion we are capable of, the choice that damns or saves us -is described in its various states as different forms of fire. The connection between two souls could be akin to a flame, an ember, a conflagration or an inferno. Love creates the same things as fire: heat and light. Love burns through you, seeping warmth, breathing life, molding thoughts, recreating senses, unleashing your true powers and sparking the divine within your human shell. It is our most primal yearning to be connected to another, for our soul to bind itself to its mate. And as long as that longing remains in this universe, love shall remain too.

For thirty years, Ji Chang Wook has lived well. Seen places, seen people, done things he cherished, done things he regretted, learnt to make choices and decisions which were beyond his age and before his time, abided by his mother as the best son he could be and moved on ahead in life with a will to take nothing for granted. He has always wanted the same things as most everyone else: a happy family, good friends and good appetite. In his quest to achieve them, he met everything and anything that has shaped him into the man he is today.

And until today, love had to wait.

Maybe it came knocking before, but didn’t stand the test of time. Maybe lust disguised itself and left disappointed hearts in its wake. Maybe the harsh realities of life were all too real to let tender emotions grow. Maybe there was simply no will to endure. Maybe he wasn’t ready.

What I have read of his viewpoints on romance is similar to what most of us struggle with. Idealistic hopes meeting jaded experiences. The attraction eroding away over time. Unexplainable volte-face on little things. Priorities and circumstances taking over the desire to keep a relationship. Realizing that what’s here is different from what’s wanted. Believing that physical distance correspondingly creates an emotional one too. Classifying ‘ordinary’ love from ‘fantasy’, yet hoping that destiny would bring the kind of love that has some magic in it.

The truth is these thoughts can at times plague even married couples, pairs that consider themselves soulmates, people who have committed themselves for the long haul and for good. We are all humans and it is our nature to err and familiarity somewhere along the road can at times bring disillusionment. The difference between calling it quits and continuing to journey together is the depth of love. Loving someone to the point where their greatest flaws are accepted, to the point where you are unafraid to reveal your own, to the point where you cannot contemplate their absence from your life even in your nightmares, to the point where you consider them irrevocably yours and losing them is the worst alternative to everything else that could ever happen. That is the point where troubles and obstacles would keep coming in only to find you stronger and better because you have dared to love unconditionally.

Wook has that kind of steadfast love for his mom.

But in a romantic situation, things are drastically different. He works in an industry that is smoke-and-mirrors on good days, on a job that is such an intrinsic part of him that he cannot shake it off at the end of a long day, where no one ever lets him forget the man they collectively swoon over onscreen, where he isn’t sure that women are able to see past the face and the broad shoulders long enough to see him. And when he does manage to meet someone, the thing simply… fizzles out for one reason or another.

When he met Hyunnie and gradually got to know her, one thing was very apparent. His motive- to be associated with her beyond the dictates of the script. It manifested itself in many interesting ways but what drove the point home was the utter lack of attempts at concealment. He does not have much of a penchant for subtlety, so he compensates for it by not being too forward in public situations. Moreover, he is notorious for privacy, so color me surprised witnessing this.

He is at it as usual, aegyoing and inching his way closer to her until she is lost for words at the cutie-patotie act. The best she can manage is complimenting him for being so good at the thing and immediately director-nim chimes in with the army jab.

Right on cue, damning all consequences, he sees his window of opportunity and launches the first salvo. “Bring me food in the army.”

No, it wasn’t a joke. Yes, he meant it for her. That split second (go slo mo at 0:46) his head and eyes tilted her way laid bare the entire story. He was going to ask her anyway, one way or another, sooner or later. He was going to make it loud and clear that Episode 40 was so not going to be the end of their journey. They would have their own epilogue and she was going to find herself right in the middle of his personal life and even more personal intentions.

At the farewell concert, he handed out what he thought were subliminal messages, and with such finesse that even non-shipping long-time fans had question marks popping above their heads. All he had to do was select one of the million available MVs based on his OST (heck, even SBS catch has a version) that showed JiBong romance in all its onscreen glory. Instead, the audience got an eyeful of the raunchy, intimate moments that everybody knew had to be two professionals acting, but still made them feel like Peeping Toms. I could practically hear them rustling in puzzlement when the kiss scene just plain refused to fade after a whole minute!! The way it was so haphazardly edited makes me give in to delusions for just a moment: thinking that Wook was planning to sing along to that BTS in its entirety until the coordinators caught him the very last minute, freaked out, spliced some drama bits in the beginning to preserve a modicum of civility and quietly decided among themselves to pan cameras onto Romeo’s face in the middle of the song.

He was prepared for that girlfriend-during-MS question. He was even more prepared with the answer. That alone speaks of an intent that was lacking or unapparent in his previous romances. What he has now is not something he will allow physical distance to destroy, not from his end. This time around, he promises steadfastness and devotion, something akin to what he grants his mother. This time around, his mind and heart have reconciled as one to the fact that his motive- to seek not merely a girlfriend but also a potential bride for the future -has fit like a hand of destiny into his priorities, his sense of age and maturity, his dreams and even in all that he has achieved so far. This time around, he is ready for love, it has found him and the enlistment he thought would be a hindrance to a relationship turned out to be the greatest blessing of all.

If he wasn’t enlisted now, his spectacular success as the Rom-Com King would’ve sealed the deal for another drama or movie already. Not to mention, truckloads of CF contracts, fan interaction meets, interviews, photoshoots… everything come in an endless loop until he was back on square one repeating the same lines on his previous romances, only this time for Hyunnie. Communication is an Achilles heel for Wook, especially when at work, and even Hyunnie, for all her maturity and understanding attitude, can only take so much for so long.

He is going into the service with just two women on his mind right now, the only ones that matter. And for 21 months, there is no one and nothing to disturb him from thinking only about them. No screaming admirers, no deadlines, no deliberate manipulation of conscience to fit into a character, no attempts to evade questions or hide truths or feign ignorance. Just him, his loyalty to his country and the girl to whom he has pledged his faithfulness should she wait until his return.

MS gave him the break exactly when he needed it. He has already shown the will to pursue his love, now he gets all the time in the world to relish the chase, to savor the courting, to nurture his dreams, needs, wants and desires in a safe homeport… where she alone belongs.

That was the subtext of his answer to Park Seul Gi’s question. The Wook we know is obsessed with not being misunderstood. Previously he welcomed interview questions on his relationship with other co-stars because that was his chance to clear the air decisively and deliberately. He framed his answers in a manner that left no room at all for further delusions or counter arguments. We also know how guarded he is with his love life. Thus it is a marked change indeed that he committed himself to the point of no return to be henceforth linked to Hyunnie. His answer was supposed to stop at ‘Jihyun-yang-ie said she will visit’, complete with the polite tone and expression he had maintained until the previous sentence. The moment he began to elaborate on their personal conversation, he had revealed his hand… and heart. Just as resolute as when denying dating rumors, he as good as confirmed ‘JiJi’ to the world by acknowledging that he is entitled to her concern regarding his personal welfare and while noonas, dongsaengs and fans all over the world can scream ‘Oppa’ at him all they want, the only ‘Oppa’ Ji hyun yang-ie is ever going to worry and fuss over is him.

The sheer possessiveness and exclusivity he exhibited in the space of those few sentences alone had me keeling over. So much so that it deserves its own post.

Your post is beautifully written as always, i am touched reading it, please continue writing, maybe a fanfiction?

  5. @malayaI think hyunni looks very good in an off-shoulder dress especially in blue or yellow color.

I would love to see her in this jenny packham dress, it's simple but it shows all the right curves...if only it has a slit just to show her long legs

So i phoshopped her into it haha

i've also mentioned that the last 4 episodes had last minute changes in the script, which gave my shipping heart the idea that the writer was inspired by their real love story and the hardships they have to face along the way...eg: the text she was suppose to send to wookie while waiting at the park "i love waiting <3<3<3<3<3<3<3"

Yeah i do agree with u chingu

I also can see that in should-we-date-or-not scene in ep 39 where uri jihyunnie is kind of worried to date again while ji wook just wanted to be with her and afraid of losing her. For me it seems like the writernim is telling uri couple to just date instead of worrying about the bad things. But they probably had already start dating since before the bts at the hospital coz everything seems suspicious from then on.

    https://youtu.be/ESW0SNlMXQo?t=1m20s

Btw about this after party vid, i might be reading too deep into this but...

Instead of just focusing on our couple reaction, how about looking at other people reaction too, like ctj coz something seems suspicious starting on 01:50 where he pointed at the cake which has our couple's pic on it (a bts pic that is) then looking at jcw then our jihyunnie started to point as well n then jcw suddenly shake his hand?? Wae? Didn't they do that earlier? Or is it a sign by jcw to ctj to stop doing that (teasing) in case people get suspicious? i bet if jcw does date jh, ctj would be among the first to know. Plus the fact that uri jiji avoiding each other stares added to the suspicion too....just my two cents though :D

    So chill everyone

p/s: still need to familiarize myself with how the forum works, especially with the pics TT
