It’s a Korean (South) drama.  Their history.  They get to make the call.  If they think it’s historical distortion and offensive then it is.  We’re outsiders looking in.  From our perspective it’s just a drama we watch where we can disengage and for the most part feel bewildered by the growing animosity.  For them, it’s a cause that their compatriots died for, they cannot disengage.  It’s part of their national identity and who they are as a people.  So they will not be backing down.  I have no doubt that they will hold out right to the end and more likely than not carry this into the futures of the leads and the writer/PD long after the drama is over.  That’s how strongly they feel about it.

Being a Korean drama that has caused controversy over its portrayal of the  student protests of 1987 is an opportunity for more than simply shutting down a show. As you said, I’m not Korean and I live in the US, so its doesnt draw the same type of emotion as someone who lived through it. It doesn’t even have the same emotion as Koreans under 30, who weren’t even alive during the incident have, cause the still might have friends and family that did. Where this could be an opportunity for those like me, not in the know, is to give sources. What would be a good book or article to read that respects the topic and tells the story? What is a movie that covered the topic that tells it more faithfully? Give us media that can help us gain a better understanding and thus more support. Example for me: I was not born during the Civil Rights era and living in the South, we certainly weren’t taught it in school other than maybe the name MLK. 10 years ago I read Parting the Waters, America in the King Years 1954-1963 by Taylor Branch and it was shocking. A movie would be The 13th on Netflix.. So when The “Black Lives Matter” movement, there was no hesitation in my support. So maybe there are books that can help not only abroad, but within and create more support for those who lived through it and help them heal.

jTBC at this point is adding more fuel to the flames… Airing 3 more episodes this week most likely won’t die down the whole anger towards the drama. In fact, it’ll probably spark more anger in people the more they show and portray ahn gi boo (central/government intelligence agents)

Not sure how you add more fuel to flames that started before the show even aired and by some who had not even watched the show. Complaints based of pre airing character descriptions that most people should realize would be based on 1st two episodes and could not be indicative of the characters through the series. The only ones who truly know if the show in its entirety is controversial is JTBC who has seen the entire thing. People who bash the show without watching it, or after 1 episodes is like deciding on the accuracy of a film as a whole after watching 10 minutes. The show may be bad. It may be inconsiderate. It’s not like we don’t have this problem  in the US but I’ve always thought to base my opinions on a whole story, not on sound bites or on “people say” when those people are rarely named. The freedom that democracy provides is to allow for different opinions and expression. If you truly don’t like drama, don’t watch. If it really offends, let sponsors know. That’s all fine. I’m just not convinced that a lot of minds were not already made up before the show even aired.

  3. The problem with a ‘drama’ is there is always shading or character development that we don’t know til later on. A drama doesn’t give you the whole story at once like a movie. So people make assumptions based on one episode or advertising, that may not be true as the story plays out and things are revealed. I’m not Korean so I understand that I can’t know how the setting truely affects those who lived it. But the US has certainly had its dark days as well and we have allowed movies/dramas to be made showing these, not all well done. Of course, we now have politicians trying to remove books from school that don’t show us as ‘heroes’. Don’t want to let kids know the real story. My question to those who want things gone, is ‘give me examples of how ——- is bad/incorrect? Something specific in the show/book that you have seen/read, not what you have been told.

  4. I find it fascinating that there is even a thought this would be canceled. There are differences between this and Joseon Exorcist. JE writer stupidly/lazily made a zombie drama with real historical characters instead of simply making up new characters like Kingdom did. While Snowdrop is set during a real incident, I believe all the characters are fictitious. 2) I believe the show is already fully completed and since this Disney+ first Korean drama, I would think they would stick with it. 3) Not being from South Korea, would they cancel a show over Petition of 230K which is less than half a percent of the population? People who find things “controversial” will always be more vocal than the otherside. It doesn’t mean it is large segment. If you are offended, don’t watch. If you don’t like it, don’t watch. ‘Cancelling” things to me starts leading us down a slippery slope towards banning books and suppressing free thought and different ideas. All that would be left is propaganda.

If this is true, all I can say, thank goodness for Eugene. Its about time she starts looking for other better drama to work in. Penthouse is getting tiring, its becoming Dynasty of the 80s. Even worst since the dead kept coming to life.

And the prison? Are those criminals on budget vacations? I thought 1 cell for 1 criminals especially those with murder case but here they even have chips & snack & laze around all day doing nothing! Some punishment * roll eyes*

Anyway I watched the show because of Eugene, if there’s no Eugene, than no reason for me to continue watching. I thought she’s gonna get back what she lost; her voice, her singing career, her daughter, her love & her life but seems like she’s back to square 1. Lost everything & eventually her life

I agree in that I always thought this show reminded me of Dynasty. It has been over the top bad people shenanigans since episode one. Despite that, I’ve gobbled it up. It’s never tried to be a serious drama. It’s pulp. There is no question the quality of writing for season 3 is not up to the standards of the previous two. But to me this is more on the studio than the writer. I doubt the writer expected to have to come up with plot for 40 episodes when she started. Mercifully there are only 3 episodes left. Needs to have a satisfying final episode. It was probably written back in season 1 and she has had to strrrrrrettch it out ever since it started dominating ratings.

  6. So, a controversy on a drama where none of the complaints have actually read the whole script or seen the actual show. How very American as we’ve seen this before from Netflix shows to Dr. Seuss, where controversies were overblown. Let artists tell their tale. If you don’t like it, it will be felt in the ratings. Judge it by something concrete, the show, not by synopses and snippets and names of characters that can be manipulated to meet a point of view.
