  1. Ha Ha, good news for middle aged guys, if they happen to live in North Korea.

    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

South Korean actor Hyun Bin won’t be sweeping any real North Korean women off their feet anytime soon, according to defector and YouTuber Park Yoo-sung.

Hyun Bin has been in the spotlight for playing charismatic North Korean army captain Ri Jeong-hyuk in Netflix’s Crash Landing on You, but Park said he felt “suspicious” of the drama’s portrayal of the star as a dashing heartthrob.

  2. Real-live RJH?

Pianist Kim Cheol-woong was born into an elite family in North Korea, and learned piano at kindergarten - a privilege enjoyed by very few in the country. He spent time studying in Moscow, where he discovered different types of music, including A Comme Amour by Richard Clayderman, and he planned to play it as he proposed to his girlfriend. It was while practising the song back home that he was reported, and subsequently interrogated for playing western music. It was then that Cheol-woong decided to defect. But before he found safety, he had to brave freezing temperatures, treacherous borders, and the Chinese police.

Just wonder how Captain Ri will be able to enjoy that kind of freedom in Switzerland at the ending of CLOY?

  3. I know folks here are going to snicker, but the KDrama that made me moved on from CLOY is tadaa... "I'm not a Robot" which I read was a total ratings failure.

Extremely cheesy and implausible plot but funny and totally enjoyable.  The main couple also has pretty good chemistry.

I tried to watch other highly rated  Kdrama like goblin etc.... but all them were pretty boring to me.

Point 4.  The Switzerland Ending.  Why again this is a PLOT HOLE?  Given the circumstances, what is wrong if Seri gets pregnant and JH only sees the child/children in 3 months after birth, and every year thereafter? And that they get very sick and cant inform each other.  This is the best CLOY can end given the restrictions and political limitiations.

    An angry CLOY fan.

To be frank, even the ending is not realistic. There is no way RJH would be allowed that kind of freedom while in Switzerland. He would have been discovered by the NK intelligence  that he is dating a famous heiress from South Korea. That would get him and his family in trouble. The only plausible ending is that he defects to SK.

But then this is a Korean drama, who cares about plot holes!  If we can tolerate superheros, time travel and warp drives  just enjoy the fairy tale.

In my country (Malaysia), CLOY is STILL ranked #1 in Netflix Top 10 list, and HB's other dramas like Secret Garden and Hyde Jekyll & Me and the writers other dramas MYFAS and LOTBS are all trending on Netflix.

    //////////////////

Yup, rewatching CLOY again as a form of escapism after our sickening politicians decided to launch their own  barf worthy K-drama series.

The best way to get these unaired scenes are usually through the Directors Cut.

    I hope it pushes through!

Wow, this thread is still active!

There is one scene I would love to see in a director's cut version. In NK, after the clam-soju party with the guys, Se-ri woke up and wondered how she ended up in RJH's bed . I recall seeing  GIFs of the Captain carrying her to his bed and tucking her in(she was drunk).

Instead of showing us numerous "recall" scenes, they should have showed us more of this instead.

Yes, exactly. Thank you for write down exactly the weird feelings that I always have while watching CLoY but can’t describe. I laugh and love everything of CLoY but can’t help feeling sad at the same time. The SAUDADE is so real, the separation and longing to meet eachother again are so real. In real life, many separated people of the Korean lived & died, & never can find or see their bro, sis, children, mom, dad... again as it has been almost 70 years! I still can’t imagine :(.
I am very happy reading somewhere that NK defectors said they can sometimes contact their relative still living in NK through China connection, so at least there is still some hope there....

Very sad fate for the Korean people, I feel.

The China connection is actually more logical and  plausible for a continuation of the main couple relationship.

As someone mentioned in reddit, the Captain could be assigned to NK embassy and Se-ri would not have problem visiting China continuously for business. I guess the writer wanted to weave Switzerland into the ending for a more romantic and full circle ending.

Chemistry and ratings wise, CLOY is the drama to beat now.

I'm really happy for all the actors and the team behind the camera.

I don't  mind if they'll go for season 2. There are ways on how they can do that because nothing really ended in Ep 16. I would love to if they can because I really want to see how they'll balance JH-SR family life in their situation plus I want to see more of the love story of GSJ and SD (it was indicated that he died but again they can find a reason for him to still be alive). 16 episodes actually is not enough given the complexity of the situation.

I actually think CLOY should be two seasons of 10 episodes just like some Western series.

NK one season and SK one season. The cliffhanger for 1st season would be when Captain Ri appears in Seoul. But I understand it would be difficult for the main actors schedule and hurt the ratings.

Also why does KDrama need to keep showing flashback scenes, don't they trust viewer memory? The time wasted could be used for additional scenes.

  9. For those interested more  about life in North Korea and haven't seen it before, here's Michael Palin trip to North Korea . The filming was done when Trump and Kim Jong Un were in Singapore last year. I agree with some people here, the NK part of CLOY is indeed more magical. The second part was more of a crime thriller , got a bit messy and there was less time for interaction between main couple.

  10. Beautiful ending, expected but still good.

    My rating of CLOY

Episode 1-9 *****   Exotic locale, "titillating get to like you phase", simple plot-line(get Se-ri home), chemistry off the charts.

Episode 10-15 ***1/2  To many plot lines, not enough lead couple time..., chemistry wattage went down a bit.

    Episode 16 ****** ( Redemption for ep10-15 )

p/s How on earth did Master Sarge ChiSoo get promoted to Captain? He is a non commissioned officer. That's a jump of 3-4 ranks to Captain, even over the "handsome" soldier who's a First-Lieutenant.

@newbie if indeed for Ep 16, then the clue to the ending was already with us.... from the 1st episode...

I thought Se-ri is dressed a bit older in the final Swiss scene of the opening credits. A time jump perhaps?

Hmm, I  wonder how the ladies here would react if the ending is like Makato Shinkai's anime, 5 cms per second i.e. Captain Ri waits for Se-ri to find out that she is now married and have twins?

Too cruel and the writer better hire some real bodyguards.

  12. Does anyone see that there are two scenes in the final ep. preview involving Capt Ri+his 5 loyal troopers and NKorean soldiers.

    (1) The tense prisoner exchange scene(on a road,  NIS and NK soldiers pointing guns at each other). Capt Ri runs back across the demarcation line, presumably Se-ri is there watching secretly and the good Captain needs to say a heartfelt goodbye. Cue more tissues.

    (2) Forest scene in which Ri+5 are surrounded by NK soldiers and the fat military director. Presumably they were hijacked on the way back to NK after the prisoner exchange?

Captain Ri and the five are wearing the same clothes in both scenes, I think they are purposely out of order in the preview to throw us off the scent.

This in my opinion, points to the open ended scenario 3 of this forum's poll. Se-ri and Captain Ri will not unite in SK and manufacture twins as per the wishes of the majority of fans here.

Looks like Captain Ri has been captured and they're saying their goodbyes under the watchful eyes of NIS?

Sorry TotoroSy, don't think Captain Ri can perform his sacred mission under these circumstances :-).

Im a bit disappointed with Captain Ri. Dont get me wrong, i like his character, courage and wit. but why on earth he kept on placing himself in a vulnerable position. Twice he had placed himself in an open space which made him an easy target as he was looking for Cheol Gang. I think it is logical to shield yourself, be stealth and cautious. But he didnt and twice Seri had to do something to save him. Just saying. Love the drama still though. Im just a little disappointed. But of course that was in the script.

LOL,  the bad guys were even more disappointing. They ran out of cover so that they could be shot down. Reminds me of the German  soldiers in the old Vic Morrow "Combat" TV series.

  15. jamy47, I am puzzled as to why secret garden is so highly rated with drama fans? That Hun Bin character is a loudmouth, first rate ahole and could be arrested for sexual assault nowadays. He is the exact opposite of Captain Ri.

Based on the discussion here, I tried to watch the series but stopped after the second body switch.

In fact CLOY could probably be my first and last Kdrama, it has set the standards too high for me. The NK  episodes were especially good. Some of the cinematography and especially the lead chemistry was just brilliant. (As an aside, I actually think Se-ri was more radiant and beautiful with NK garb then her designer clothes in SK).  And as a bonus, I was also educated on some interesting aspects of North Korean life.

I tried to watch some highly rated series like Goblin, mylovefromthestar on Netflix etc but stopped after a few episodes as they did nothing for me emotionally. I dunno, there is something special about CLOY that got me hooked.

  16. Hi all ,

New guy to kdrama land here. Watched CLOY by accident but now totally hooked.

I thought all KD romcoms have happy endings but I learned from this forum that it is not always so.

So  now I actually think that Captain Ri will die in the end but will father Seri's children. This is based on my interpretation of the soyu drunk scene, that the good captain's wish will never materialize.

Is this kind of sad ending plausible in K-drama land?
