I just finished ep 2 and I am glad they addressed the fall out of the financial crisis using Yi Jin’s character. It was very hard to watch him promise those men that he would never be happy again.

I’m now watching ep 3 and yes, I think mommy Hee Do isn’t the right actress - something is off and I think it’s that we can’t see young Hee Do in this actress’s portrayal.

For me, it starts with the voice. Kim Tae Ri has a deeper alto-ish voice. The actress playing older Hee Do has a voice that's rather nasally and lispy.

Not for nothing, a better and more accurate translation would have been "I keep wanting to be greedy."

While Yi Jin could have possibly meant that he wants more for Hee Do, it is far more likely that he was talking about himself -- that he is permitted to chase his dreams despite his family's bankruptcy. This is also book-ended by the guy sitting next to him during that job interview saying that he will continue to live chasing his dream even when he gets old.

  2. This drama makes it hard to like Soo Hyun a lot of the time.

Instead of thanking Yohan for pretty much saving her butt or apologizing to Yohan for putting Elijah at risk and leaving all alone to get physically assaulted, she instead points at gun at Yohan ten times longer than she needs to.

That's some mighty fine police work.

  3. I can't believe Elliot Smith was used as the less-depressing music choice.

I'm relieved that Yohan got the necklace back (though I'm confused as to whose blood that was). That scene in the hospital was infuriating. Hard to believe they were THAT desperate for money. I wish we had gotten a scene with young Elijah.

I'm not sure I've ever seen two characters like Yohan and Sun Ah in a kdrama. That kind of love/hate relationship is usually reserved for soap operas/telenovellas. I'm all in favor of hate sex between them if that's the case.

Jin Joo's frustration felt a little hollow to me -- or at least the reasons she gave did. Not being informed of Yohan's plan to resign? That's the best we get for her reasons to be tempted over to the dark(er) side? I wonder if there's a bug/tracker/explosive device in that pearl necklace.

Ga On has thankfully made his choice and hopefully we can pick up the pace in the second half. Felt a little for his mentor as Ga On roasted him. "They should have done better." This episode did show how out of touch he is. The country is falling apart and his answer is to take down the live courtroom? There's a war going on and he's trying to fight with buckets and twigs.

The Team Yohan meeting was unexpected. Such catharsis when assistant guy said, "Don't pretend to be smart." I hope we see the young actress and the lawyer continue to play a role in the final 8 episodes.

  4. It feels like Yohan is grooming Ga On to be his successor and has been working on creating the image of an infallible and unimpeachable idol judge with a heartbreaking past. Unfortunately, this might suggest that Yohan doesn't plan on surviving the war he's started. And if dramas like Sweet Home has taught us, if a teenager acts all bratty towards a family member for almost the entire show only to warm up to them near the end, there's a good chance the family member is going to die.

I haven't been too big of a fan of Jin Young's acting in his serious and angry moments but he was excellent in his breakdown scene in the prison yard. Reminded me of Brad Pitt in Se7en after he found out what was in the box.

Rolled my eyes hard at Soo Hyun being concerned about Elijah's welfare. She wasn't concerned at all about what she had done to Elijah, but rather only what Yohan might have done to her. That entire scene was like Ga On and Soo Hyun fussing over the expired food in the refrigerator after they had set the house on fire.

I've read complaints about Kim Min Jung's acting but I'm adoring it. She's dived headfirst in the Catwoman role and committed to it. From the yoga poses to the leisurely pace of how she talks and how she moves, Sun Ah is all feline. There's even a slowness to the way she blinks.

The final scene had a League of Shadows vibe all over it. From the crowd dressed in all in black to the banners with a logo straight out of a comic book, Sun Ah has pretty much taken on a duo villain role of Catwoman and Ra's Al Ghul.

    - The SC judge looks suspicious but I think he's an honest by-the-book person, he even threatened Go An to mend his ways or they'll go commit suicide together at his parents grave, so he may even turn out to be a relative / father-figure/ guardian. Someone has to rebuild the judiciary after Yo Han's judicial activism / media trials end with breakdown of trust in all existing institutions, and it will be him.

I'll just say it was pretty suspicious how the two of them witnessed kids play-flogging right after they had their talk about Ga On staying at Yohan's house when the Chief Justice probably sensed he was losing Ga On.

I don't think it was part of the plan for Soo Hyun to start questioning yet.

Just my opinion, but the fact it took all of 2 seconds before Ga On started playing good cop to Soo Hyun's bad cop makes me think it was the plan. For him to take Ga On without getting anyone's permission or even inform anyone simply to have her meet Soo Hyun so that she can have a female friend seems...naive.

    - Is the show trying to tell viewers that while a huge donation is being given to Stanford University to name a damn hall in Elijah's name and she is a brilliant student of computer engineering who got there on scholarship, BUT CAN'T GET HER LEGS/KNEES FIXED THROUGH SURGERY IN TEN WHOLE YEARS?

Who believes that? I don't. It's fiction, but fiction should make sense too or are we supposed to keep our brains in freezer and just enjoy the visuals?!

Uh, there are a lot of very wealthy paralyzed people though.

    More on Question #2 -

How does an officer of the law, follow not one, but 2 speeding vehicles on a highspeed chase, and 1) not call for backup  2) stop a quarter mile away when they stop  3) watch as one of the "criminals" destroys the others car with a sledge hammer AND attempt to falsely entrap the man - and he's a JUDGE -  4) make no attempt to arrest either one?

... still loving this drama anyways though

Nor do anything about the guy they were chasing in the first place.

I'll keep watching the show because I liked Lee Sang-Yi in "Once Again" but the leads are kind of boring me. I've only ever seen the FL in a minor role in "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" and have never seen the ML before. I kind of like the second female lead better. So far, the FL seems like a Mary Sue. She's a great person who helps children who get hit by cars on the street. She doesn't seem to have any flaws.

Well, Myeong-hee is already a person who has committed fraud in exchange for money, so that's a bit of a flaw.

Watch "18 Again" with the ML. It was one of the best dramas of last year.

  10. Can't believe the drama ended without a callback to Tae Jin Ah singing "Run Across Her" (preferably at the OTP's wedding.) It was the like the easiest set-up ever. The finale seemed rather lackluster, as if they had already gone over-budget. It was a bit of a whimper-ish end compared to such a strong beginning, but ultimately a satisfying watch.

Could have done without the happy ending for the lying suicidal stalker with daddy issues. Dude should be in jail for all the stuff he did (fraudulent reporting, setting up the accident at the studio, breaking into Do-Hee's apartment).

  11. This has unfortunately just fallen off the rails these past couple of episodes as its gone to the generic kdrama bag of tropes. Do-Hee pulls the noble idiocy card and instead of taking some time and doing some self-reflecting and growing, immediately goes back to Hae-Kyung just because his mom died and she "has no other choice." Taking the time for some growth would've made better sense and would have reflected what happened in the webtoon. And now, a car accident out of nowhere. Worst thing is that in the previews, Jae-Hyung is still walking around when he should have been forcibly (involuntarily) committed awhile ago, especially after a suicide attempt. There's 2 psychiatrists around him, plenty of sane adults, and yet he's STILL not in jail or a hospital.  That simply doesn't ring true.

  12. Starting a theory that Gun-Woo is actually Loki, the trickster god, in disguise.

He serves no purpose in the drama other than to create chaos. He was the first person to show Jae-Hyeok a picture of Hae-Kyung. When No-Eul fought with the debt collectors, he called Hae-Kyung to help her instead of doing anything himself. To facilitate Hae-Kyung joining the webshow, he called Hae-Kyung over so that No-Eul could tell him to join. He was the source of Do-Hee discovering Jae-Hyeok lied to her about his past and family. He illogically called Hae-Kyung for help when Jae-Hyeok was passed out drunk at the pojangmacha. When Do-Hee was prepared to cut Jae-Hyeok entirely from her life, he tried to placate her by saying Jae-Hyeok has accepted the break-up. When Jae-Hyeok was sick and hungover, he called Do-Hee for help instead of doing it himself. Sensing Do-Hee was completely over Jae-Hyeok, Gun-Woo tells Do-Hee a sob story to try and soften her heart toward Jae-Hyeok. And finally, he advises Jae-Hyeok to seek psychiatric help from his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and conveniently tells Do-Hee so that she arrives right on time to witness the physical confrontation.

No sane person would have done these things without malice aforethought. All this mischief was done for Gun-Woo's personal amusement. Plus, he has orange/red hair. Loki is a god of fire.

I'm just a little confused in the scene when HK patted DH's hair and her expression is like she didn't like it. Then HK told her that he'll drop her off and she said, what now all of a sudden so HK asked do you want to sleep over and she said no, we should go, then hurries to get out.

Why didn't she like when HK patted her hair? And why she said they are leaving so sudden but when HK asks if she wants to sleep over, she said no, we should go then hurries out.

I read it as DH being disappointed that post-confession all she got was a pat on the head and not a kiss or at least a hug.

I also have a different take on the forehead kiss. I'm seeing more as a sign of HK's wariness with skinship and intimacy, with all of abandonment issues and possible years of celibacy.

This was indeed a sweet gesture but was no one else kind of bothered that she only took maybe two spoonful and then no more? Most of it was left overnight and he threw it away in the morning. However, I must say that at least Korean drama shows let the actors eat because in Chinese drama food are almost always a decoration. I like to see the actors actually eat food if that’s what they’re supposed to be doing in the scene.

Exactly. That was part was a bit clunky, though I suppose it goes with the philosophy that it's the effort of the one cooking that matters.

But still..."Let me get you another bowl of soup because the the bowl of soup which you had one spoonful of has gone cold, but then immediately tell you that you should go home before you eat even try another spoonful even though we agreed to just start dating."

  15. Had a lot of hope for Gun-Woo this episode as more than just an enabler for exes who happens to be gay when he referred to what Jae Hyung is doing as "violence" but then he just went right back to enabling and sticking his nose in everyone's business.

Keanu should be revealing everything at this point about Jae Hyung as confidentiality would be waived if he considers him to be a public danger (if he even has his medical license).

Still waiting for someone to investigate the accident at the studio.
