Now back to our regular programming. :)

What is the significance of them both having this shirt? They obviously have one each, so surely there's some point to it. And it's not something GH & BLY bought together, in the series, since they each wear it, long before their relationship turned into more.

MOD EDIT: DO NOT QUOTE IMAGES, GIFS, AND VIDEOS!!

In episode 4, ypu see BLY is wearing it under his jacket as he's passed out.

      Hide contents

    l0MOpSr.jpg

Then in episode 5, GH is wearing his sweater as he's lovingly folding the jacket BLY washed for him (GH also changes shirt in the middle of that scene, when you see his arms only, he's got another shirt on. But that's a case for @liesl, I believe. :) )

      Hide contents

    p6vqzz4.jpg

Then, in episode 6 and 7, which seems to take place during the same day (although I'm not sure about that), first GH wears it, then BLY, then GH again.

      Hide contents

And I think in episode 15, they're both wearing it at the same time, even - you glimpse it when BLY gives GH that red scarf he knitted. (When did BLY have time to knit that, anyway? GH follows him around constantly. Maybe BLY combines visits to the loo with very efficient knitting time? Haha!)

So this isn't a continuity error or anything like that, since there are two identical shirts. Is it supposed to be a statement about how they belong together? And that they're more alike than they think from the beginning? (Sorry if this has been discussed before, I've missed it, in that case.)

This is so brilliantly exposed ! Thank you for all the work it supposes and the care you had to share it with us who are extremely interested in 'little details" and their significance.

“Ah, Xu Weizhou. The man I have been looking for. Come in, come in.”

“My king…it is rather late. Perhaps I shouldn’t—”

    “Are you disobeying me?”

“No! I would never disrespect you in such a manner, my king.”

Tsk tsk. “Well, then do come in. And why the formalities when we are alone? Call me by my real name, my Zhouzhou.

“If that is what you desire, my ki—Huang Jingyu…”

“It is indeed what I desire, but tonight, I desire so much more.

    Swallow. “J-Jingyu ah…” Pant.

This is exactly the kind of plot for future movie they can shoot together as a "pair". The ZZ character in this plot, would be someone like a high-ranking literrato  供石 (gōngshí) collector. And JJY of course, as a warrior-prince.

Regarding this, you can read it here.

"Experts warned that Seek McCartney’s approval should not necessarily be hailed as a sign of a relaxation of censors’ usually prudish attitudes...China’s system for evaluating films is still very unstable, because the rules are very unclear. It depends heavily on the individual censor’s whims."

I myself have few things to point out:
"Seek McCartney" is a co-production between France and China. The plot of "Seek McCartney" is well developed, it's considered as serious work, the work that comes from a well produced team and can be seen as "art". There is no couple effect or whatsoever. Everybody knows it's just a movies.

Meanwhile "Shangyin" is just a web series with low budget and illogical plot and can be accessed easily by public tru the internet.
    1. The 2 characters turn gay in the novel. It's ok if they are homosexual, but nope, they are straight but become gay for each other.
    2. They have pre-matured sex, rape scene is involved.
    3. National army as background is being used and heavily abused. Remember all the imagination how BLY abused his right in the army to help GH, GY abused his right to frame CLY to help BLY, etc.? The novel distorts the army image.
    4. The name of the novel is related to drug, i.e Heroin.
    5. The actors are well supported by shippers, they want them to go gay for each other too. Shippers want them to happen in real life.

    6. They are gaining some public attention. A big part of this public recognition comes from teenagers with limited education and can easily be influenced.

Now if I were the censor guy, I'd pick Shangyin to censor too, no doubt.

I would never place myself in censor-position, even in imagination, but I quite appreciate your extensive analysis. I see points 3 and 4 as the main problems for our concerns (and for Addicted team). Could they change name (no Heroin, no Addicted) ? No, it is too late. Could a season 2 happen without the Army or Party background ? No either, or then they have to change every character.

But about "too late", this applies to the government authorities as well. Millions and millions of Chinese (et moi et moi...)*** have watched the series and have access to by-passing the ban.

*** "millions de chinois, et moi et moi" is a famous popular French song. It goes by "millions of Chinese, and me, and me...".

@akira1221oor Every fan group is going to have their own crazies, that is just not something you can deny.  A number of us here, although CP fans, we understand the paths these two are walking and there will always be at least someone that will come out to calm or be the voice of reason when things get too heated.

As for your suggestion that ZZ and JY should avoid doing joint projects, I completely disagree with this.  The reason is that they comfortable around each other, understood each other, and seems to feed off strengths from one and another.  When they work on joint projects, their tacit understanding is going to allow them to work more effectively, hence many referred them to as: 1 + 1 > 2.  Fans is not the only one that can see this, others as well.  So, as I see it, if they are going to develop their career completely separate and away from one and other, that is the equivalent of having an axe but using a wooden stick to chop a block of wood instead.

I completely agree with you. They make such a pairing effect ! They often reminds me of the most celebrated movie pair, Laurel & Hardy. ZZ very often looks like Laurel in his attitude towards over-physical JY. The problem is, Laurel & Hardy often played quite ambiguous situations, sharing the same bed, going through very tender relations etc., but it was never explicit. And, besides, no one of them could ever have a carrier of his own.

So, pairing in movies is ok, but not too much. In real life, they just do as they (can)want.

ZZ always flashes a 2 and JY a 6 in their selfies together.

Oh ! Is that so ? Intriguing indeed about ZZ. His personnality has much complexity, or better, as the 6 was already chosen by JY, he had to distinguish himself.

My points are only related to chinese culture (which actually I am fond of knowing more about), not so much to those hand-gestures that youngsters feel necessary to show-off when photographed. Because, you know, the sign two for example is adopted largely around the world to mean victory or success, as this ROW (rest-of-the-world) has completely forgotten the "art" of hand-computing. To go further, the 2 in Chinese culture, related to Tao, is leading to binary mathematics. This Chinese origin was exposed in Occident by Leibniz around year 1700. And binary maths are our masters now, all "modern" life is now framed by them.

In the Addicted series, Laoyin happens to look very happy (he smiles of contentment) to have found the answer to a math quiz. And it is the occasion for his first serious incident with Hai.

Perhaps ZZ leans Taoist and JY leans Buddhist

It would just be the contrary. But never mind. The essential, here, is the path we follow and not the form of the stones we happen to pick up.

    005xMBXvjw1f1yoq7oyvhg30hs0a0nph.gif

Actually, when ZZ says his number is 24, which as I saw it, makes 3 x (2 to the power 3), and I wrote it made him quite a Buddhist inclination with a "zest" of Taoism, let me be less affirmative  about the "zest". Indeed a "2 to the power 3" means that the 2 is the kernel of the result, which places the 2 at quite a center position.

It must correspond to what History can tell about Chinese traditional spirituality, the coming of Buddhism in a Taoist field and the way it (B) sort of gem-cultivated (T).

BTW what is JY's declared favourite number ?

Actually, I had planned to point attention to it, but you did it way better than I could do (I do not handle the devices to insert videos, images and all that sorts).

Indeed, there is a detail here which is highly speaking. ZZ wears the "PIGALLE" cloth in it. The same as the one we can see in Heroin : he puts it at first when invited by Hai & LuLu at the "luxury" restaurant, and he wears it also when majong-gaming with Hai's friends, to get money from them.

Pigalle is a well known quarter in Paris (France). It had quite a bad reputaion for beeing the hottest place in town. But times changing, it now is calmer, but still attracts tourists from all over the world to see French-Cancan and a few other spicy shows. But the days for "les petites femmes de Paris" is definitely over.

This choice would of course be ZZ's.

  8. In Timmy’s song « Remember Your Eyes »
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3EhSUwC-WQ

     it says

« I am feeling the sky in my heartS
     I remember your eyes »

Does not it mean the author (Timmy aka Xu Wei Zhou) has 2 hearts (at least) ? One is organic. The other depicted here must only be spiritual. And we all know to whom it belongs. The belief in spiritual heart denotes an undeniable inclination for either Tao or Buddhism.

His lucky number is 24, he answered when questioned about. We know that Taoism goes strictly with 2’s and powers of 2, when Buddhism goes with 3’s and powers of 3. (Actually, the room number in the school is 27, which is 3 to the power 3.)
So, by choosing 3 x (2 to the power 3), ZZ indicates a strong Buddhist inclination, with a zest of Tao.

  9. I shall focus again on the signification of the characters, and on the filming devices.

Let me first quote myself from what I posted on last Wednesday. I know it is improper but I see it necessary to explain why I have to modify a bit my standpoint on what is, after all, central.

    ————————
In the story as a whole, Louyin is quite the conservative Chinese figure, when Hai is easy with neo-capitalistic (neo-liberal) way of social operating, Hai is the «modernist» character. Indeed we can see that in many occasions. Louyin for example, refuses to eat the spaghettis western-like. And when Louyin drinks the cup of tea at Gu Weiting’s invitation, he very much concentrates on doing it traditional way. Idem when invited for lunch at GW’s table with mother and Hai, Louyin is very polite, traditional way.
On the other hand, Hai’s behaviour conforms with modernity. He uses his social connections to get what he wants, he is at ease with not following social uses in what they are tradition or hypocrisy. I see here a major reason for the banning of the series by Chinese government. These questions, indeed, are at the heart of the ideological fight inside inner circles in the Party and in the Army. Do keep in mind that we are not dealing here with ordinary people : Gu Weiting is a major general ! It is a major-general family affairs which is depicted in this series. And that explain the ban, much more than the only bl side of the story.
    —————————

We will have indeed, to shift from the judgment "Hai is the «modernist» character", to the simple view of him as one who indeed know well about the modern way, but profoundly despises all it goes with. So to say that "Hai’s behavior conforms with modernity" was an imprecision.
Remember how he behaves with the bureaucrat to get a free-of-charge restaurant for aunty Zhou, going even, in a very profound contempt, to kidnap the dog from him.

Now, I come to analyzing a scene which will illustrate this new point of view, and show how music acts a bridge between sequences. It begins near the end of the sequence when we first see Hai father’s house, after Hai has an argument with the nice guy majordomo-chauffeur-bodygard.
The high-angle view of the drawing room is back and the Vivaldi music begins. It takes long realizing the music does not come from what we see i.e. Hai father's drawing room. Indeed we are now in what looks like a high-class cafeteria in Beijing. The Vivaldi tone goes on and introduces a very beautiful LuLu coming. Hai was the first at this rendez-vous (HAI IS NEVER AT LATE !). He throws back to its basket, a whole piece of viennoiserie offered with his café-au-lait, in a very despitful manner. The shot is very short and inserted between the one introducing Lulu and the one showing her sitting in front of Hai.
It is obvious that Hai does not like western modernity as it is invading Chinese society like a new Opium-War, even if he is at ease "using" it. It is another argument for him to be immensely attracted towards LuoYin. But I maintain Hai as representing the Confucianist, when Luoyin would be the Taoist side.

Note : Is the name Zhou for aunty Zhou, originally in the novel, or is-it a choice for the filming version, due to WeiZhou’s name of course ?

Thanks to share your interesting work. It fits perfectly with what we suppose the situation is in real.

I suggest you introduce the Corean singer into the plot. Remember no girl flirting can really affect the Two's relation, but any temptation towards such a good looking guy as the Corean singer is definitely a major danger ! And a good argument for interesting developments.

But of course, the Two are always to be united, no matter the hazards life will bring ti them.

  11. HOW WE ALL HAVE BEEN DONE

Note : for this study of the filming sequence, You = you, me as well as Hai, because you, me are led to identify with his point of view.

You are sitting in the sofa, distractedly looking at the TV screen. It shows people making huge soap bubbles. It recalls you what must happen with Yin’s taking shower. You go fantasizing about his body.
    - This is the first disconnection with reality...
Then the TV screen shows frozen people in Siberia (?). It achieves to disconnect you from any reality. But the best is to come. Your hypnotized attention is towards the bathroom’s door. And you hear angry or afraid high voices. Of course, as you are hypnotized looking at the door, you suppose the sound is coming from there.
    - This is the trick, the diabolic trick from the filming direction (= filming and montage sound and image cutting) : before you realize that the sound did not come from the bathroom, but from the TV screen, a young male god appears in semi-nudity.

You have been disconnected, then hypnotized and finally completely puzzled. You are done.

This, in my opinion, is great filming.

I read in wikipedia that the Direction is by a Ding Wei, but I do not find anything about him. Could someone confirm or not  ? Again this is great art in filming, and we must pay him our admiration.

  12. I do not know why Xu Wei Zhou’s song, EMPTY TOWN, did not find any echo here.
Just listen to it (and read Blake’s translation) at

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWJjxbYAp9k

It is a very pure, very sincere and talented song, with just a blues-style guitar accompaniment. Zhou’s voice is emotional to tears.
It seems to possibly be placed after the car accident (as told in the novel) and Yin’s decision to break all relations with Hai in order to save Hai’s future life.
It is quite an illustration of the poem which goes like this:

« Un seul être vous manque, et tout est dépeuplé » (Lamartine, L’isolement)

« One being missing, and everything is depopulated » (Lamartine, Isolation)

Indeed the song depicts an empty town, and the chorus is repeating ALONE, ALONE...

We shall also remember that GH's presumably using his dad's clout in extracting favours from local officials (to secure free rent for the Auntie's store) and business owners (BLY's dad getting a new job beyond his professional credentials). Also, GH's family has plenty of money shloshing around - quite difficult to attain just from his dad's military salary. That, and BL story equals to a true Sodom and Gomorrah in the govt's eyes.

The point indeed is here : a soldier's salary cannot explain such ease and "money shloshing around". It has many names : corruption, use of power, abuse of dominant situation... But whatever its name, the longtime question is how to deal with ? It is a philosophical choice : modernity or tradition, or in Chinese context, "Konfuzianismus und Taoismus" as studied by Max Weber in 1916, plus the fact that the present "modernity" reveals itself as a new Opium War.

    - What is the third consequence of the Opium War ?

Just a thought: Maybe the film crew or the actors love to play Go in their free time? Or the house owner? Or it's just an insight by the director? Good directors always put interesting stuff/easter eggs.

You guys pile up 4 pages when I went to sleep. XDD

Thank you for reacting. The Go board must definitely be a choice by the film director. Indeed it is very present at the image when, inspecting Yin's room, You Qi sees Hai's "limited edition" watch on it. Now, for the count of black stones in the drawer, it is also quite deliberate. So I encline to suppose an indication here. If it is in the novel, good for all, and if is not, good for the "happy few" !

  16. My point in insisting about Louyin’s maestria in Go-playing (could it be confirmed in the novel version or not), is to demonstrate his eminence in strategy. Louyin is depicted as a strategist, and his superiority in Go-playing should just add to this side of his personality. He often anticipate situations. Look for example at how he let Hai elaborate in having always been living in Louyin’s poor quarter of Bejing. Until on the bed, Hai has to confess it was a lie, Louyin plays the one who is supposed to admit it is true. And laughs at it when Hai comes to confession !
    This is of a strategist.
Idem for the love-gaming : Most of the times, Yin is anticipating two or three moves ahead.

By the way, I think Heroin Web Series and the banning reflect perfectly China’s at its croisée des chemins.

In the story as a whole, Louyin is quite the conservative Chinese figure, when Hai is easy with neo-capitalistic (neo-liberal) way of social operating, Hai is the «modernist» character. Indeed we can see that in many occasions. Louyin for example, refuses to eat the spaghettis western-like (spoon or not ?). And when Louyin drinks the cup of tea at Gu Weiting’s invitation, he very much concentrates on doing it traditional way. Idem when invited for lunch at GW’s table with mother and Hai, Louyin is very polite, traditional way.

First of all, the TEAspoon is weird in my opinion no matter how you put it. I live in Europe and have been to Italy and have also been eating pasta all the time. I wouldn't consider myself an expert but I've never EVER had a teaspoon on my dish plates to extract some pulp (what?) from lemon slices. To be honest, I've never even had lemon slices on my plate of pasta but since I think it could also be a decoration, I didn't mention anything about it in my post (I do get lemon slices when I eat fish or steak but never pasta) Lemon in the dish is to my knowledge squeezed on top of the dish to let the juice comes out. Never have I needed to pull out the pulp from lemon slices and why would you even eat it? Have you eaten lemon slices before? Try eating it. It's not refreshing. It's SOUR.

Second of all, if your psychological explanation is correct then he should set the clock earlier than 15 o'clock not later. This has the opposite effect and makes him being late instead. By the way, look at this scene.

And about the go, I wish you luck to find some answers since I'm not familiar with the games so I can't help you with this. ;)

Quite sorry to have to contradict you here. I also live in Europe (I am French), like you I have never seen a teaspoon on my dishplate to extract whatever. But we are here in a Chinese top-of-the-hill supposed restaurant providing the supposed nec-plus-ultra western way of dining (with Chinese conterfeit Bordeaux though !). So, a rational should lay on that and not on what we (you and me at least) could experience at a good restaurant in Milano or Roma (where we should have raped cheese to go with). But suddenly an idea : the teaspoon may be for getting some raped cheese ! Yeah, Hourrah ! But still, we don not see any cup full of raped cheese on the table. Another problem. Too bad...

About the clock, it is you who is puzzled here. When it is 6.00 at the clock and only 5.30 in the real, you wake up in advance and not in late. And both clocks (table and wall) are not connected, so they may welle be deregulated at Hai's convenience as I supposed. You see, I am like Hai, I never admit to be late. And I often deregulate my clocks so as to be at time at my rendez-vous.

About Addicted Go playing boys. I still want an answer from people here who have access to the novel.

    1. The weird utensil to eat pasta : Link

And what did Lulu do then? Hmmm... good question. Crying for one and a half hours outside in the cold waiting for GH to chase after her before finally made her way? Who knows! :P That's the... "elliptic excuse" of it to quote @sixte

I want here to answer first about the spoon, which, in my opinion, is not a mystery except may be for someone (like Yin) who is not supposed to be familiar with supposedly western-sophisticated-like eating manners. As I have already pointed it out, the tea-spoon is here to help extracting (along with the fork), some pulp from the lemon slices. It is good, indeed to refresh one's mouth after eating spaghettis, or just to accompany the taste of it.

    - Second, about the clock on the wall, I don not think the "elliptic excuse" is necessary. Remember GH is never late. So he may well have his wallclock (which is not connected), to be in advance, so as to never be late when it is to reach his beloved one. No filming ellipse here, just psychological explanation.

    What do you think ?

    - Third, I had no reaction from those who have access to the novel, about our boys playing Go, and Laoyin beeing the best at it.

Thank you a lot for your researches. They are like precious stones on the path of our neverending journey through addiction.

  19. I am new here, and I want to salute you all, who made this trend such a wonder  !

I want to address here especially to those who have access to Chai Jidan's novel. I think we could examine some details which can be seen in the filming, and try to check if it is an improvisation (invention, suggestion, and from whom ?), or if it just fits with the novel.
    - For example, some of you noticed that the kiss in the car was not in the novel, and that it probably came to the light for us by a miraculous suggestion from the actors themselves.
    - others focused of supposed errors, like the stains and many others. But I just want to plaid here for the right a filming has to not be that linear, but to be elliptic. For example at the high-class restaurant, we can notice many strange differences in the level of the wine inside the bottle. But what if there may have been two or three successive bottles ? And why not accept an ellipse here ? And for the desert spoon, I just suggest the use of them for extracting some pulp from the lemon spices.
I most appreciate all contributions for examining little details.

    - Now comes my point. I have noticed the presence of a Go board (with the regular 19x19 grid). And it is noticeable only apart from when the couple sleeps and lives at Lou Yin’s place. See ep.15 at 14.11. We can even notice the two boxes of stones.
And then in ep.15 at 15.16, when Luoyin opens a drawer, we see 19 or 20 black stones. Probably Lou Yin’s ”handicap” when playing with Haï. (Of course, Luoyin is leading, in this game as in every field related to intellect).
Does the novel mention our two lovers playing Go ? And with this handicap ?
About handicap, in ep.4, so, before Hai any staying at Yin’s home, a very short snapshot at 6.56 shows the drawer containing may be less than 8 black stones. Does that relate to Yin playing with Meng  for example. Again, what does the novel say about the boys playing Go ?
Beyond pleasure to know more about the story, this question leads to the particularly exquisite care for details from the filming crew. As for the immensely talented direction.
I consider the sequence of "going to the roof" as a pure gem, especially when it is filmed slow-moving at Hai’s feet escalating the steps.
Actually, who is credited for filming direction ? He must be a great director.

-Then a very serious question. There is definitely a gap in the scenario. At least a gap in the filming scenario. What about the novel ?

Both parents, Bai Luoyins mother (Jiang Yuang), as well as Gu Hai’s father (Gu Weiting), were to know, long before aunt Chou’s restaurant-opening-incident, that their sons were attending the same school, if not even knowing they sat at the same class (the famous 27th). Proves for that are multiple : first, Yin is fetched from the school to meet GW, and when Hai returns to his city’s appartement after Yin’s heavy drinking, his father mention the big fight his son had at school (so father knew well what school it is). Second, and quite similarly, Yin’s mother is always criticizing her son’s school for not beeing « smart enough » (understand type of school for lower class youngsters), and the chauffeur (quite a nice fellow in my opinion) find Hai for her at the said school, so she knew for sure.

Does the "elliptic excuse" can save the face ?
    Still, a chef d’oeuvre !
