Dramafever, Viki, VIU, and [illegal website] : Which of these Top Subbing sites has the Nearest and More Accurate interpretation from the Korean Raw Languages?"
    many thanks.

I can only comment about DF, Viki and VIU since I haven't tried [illegal website] (but I read somewhere that they take their subs from the three too, correct me if I'm wrong).

Most of the time, the translations would actually be about the same across all three groups with minor differences like: "Missing Soul (Viu), Miscellaneous Omitted Person (Viki) and Special Case (DF)". Which, if you think about it, roughly means the same thing. When one of them is different from the two, I tend to follow the translation done by the two (majority wins I guess). The tricky part is when all three of them translates it different.

Personally, I prefer Viki because I like that they sub the bgm at the same time and how they sometimes give a quick info on things if there's more meaning to a word that the characters are saying. However, Viki is usually the last to release their subs. And since it's not available on my region, I have to rely on subtitles that other people have ripped (taken?) from Viki. And I'm really thankful to them for that. But sometimes they don't wait until the subs are at 100% complete so the quality isn't that good.

For this show, Viu was the fastest and with consistent quality so I would watch it first with VIU and then re-watch it again with Viki subs. And then sometimes with DF afterwards (I re-watch a lot lol).

DF is also good actually but like others have commented here, they tend to smoothen out the translations. Which isn't really bad and I think it's easier for some people to watch but since I know a bit of Korean, as much as possible, I prefer that what I'm reading and what I hear them saying are in sync. Like for example, when Grim Reaper tells KS that he doesn't want him to die he goes "You dying, I don't want that" (which is how Viki translates it) but DF may translate it as "I don't want you to die." Which means the same and is grammatically correct but I still prefer the first version because that's how he literally said it.

In the end, I think, it's just a matter of the viewer's personal preference really.

I vaguely remember that scene, since I was too sad to look past the details. So I thought his attire was a bit lowly? I mean grandfather always wore this suits, and carried himself with poise, so I thought this man couldn't be deok hwa. Also deok hwa would call him 'uncle' [samchun] right? Just because he grew old would he address him as Sir?

*Btw thanks for explaining the word in terms of  korean linguistics. So, it is not the hotel attendant either. That sure is interesting.

Yeah I have to agree that his attire wasn't anything much, which makes me wonder too if he is indeed DeokHwa since we've seen how flashy he can get with his clothes. That's the only part that's making me doubt it actually.

I don't think DeokHwa would still call him "uncle" though. He did tell Kim Shin after his grandfather's passing that he'll be his brother, father and grandfather to him like his grandfather was. And since his grandfather called KS "naeuri" then it could be because of that.

@shahlooblah But an attendant from the hotel would also address him as 'sir' right? Or  I don't know if there is any other korean word which suits the term better. When ET comes back if 60 years have passed in between, then deok hwa would be 30+30+30=90 yrs old. :S The butler didn't look that old. Also I doubt Shin would make Deok Hwa do those chores considering their relationship. DH should sit at the top of the business remember?

"Naeuri" is an olden Korean form of speech (saeguk) though which isn't really used anymore by present day Koreans, unless in saeguk dramas/movies. It's often translated to "My Lord", like a liege lord. Hotel attendants would more likely go with "-ssi" or "-nim" I think. Unless Kim Shin specifically requested to be addressed as "Naeuri" which feels strange since we've never seen him done so before. Secretary Kim simply refers to him as CEO, even when he knows there's more to him than that. While, on the other hand, we've seen DeokHwa's ancestors do so through generations.

At 90, DeokHwa could be retired already or had simply dropped by for a visit while he was in Canada also? Since they own the hotel too, he could've visited to check in on the hotel and Kim Shin. Like how grandpa would visit Kim Shin from time to time before and worry about the silverware not being cleaned. He didn't ask the old guy/DeokHwa to do any chores though?

Now that we're in this train of thought, it makes me curious to know who Kim Shin's new caretaker is, since grandpa was around 80-81yrs old when he assigned(I can't think of a proper term) DeokHwa to Kim Shin.

  4. Hi! Silent lurker here. I've been coming and going in this thread for a while now, reading and being thankful of everyone's theories and thoughts and gushes^_^

Like most of you, I finished episode 16 (at 4:30am!) with mixed emotions (more like a blubbering mess lol). A part of me felt, still feels, like it would've been wonderful already if we ended midway, right at the wedding night when they fell asleep together. I would've been perfectly happy to accept "and they lived happily ever after" at that point. But a part of me also likes the ending that we got.

Although we don't see them drinking the oblivion tea, I want to believe that Kim Woo Bin and Sunny got the clean slate that they wanted and fell in love with each other for who they were in their current timeline without the grief of Wang Yeo and Kim Sun. I think Sunny decided to leave because there was too much pain and guilt between them to ever love each other at that point. I don't think it was about Kim Shin anymore, since we saw him giving his permission to Grim Reaper by giving him Ji Eun Tak's letter as an excuse to see Sunny.

As much as I didn't want Eun Tak to die (damnit it whyyyy :bawling:), the missing soul part did need to be resolved and it was pretty much consistent with her character. And if her mortality was indeed going to keep being under threat then I'm glad that she got to choose, and that it was meaningful, rather than having a random final destination moment.

I was really glad for that video post showing that Kim Shin had somehow forseen this future of Eun Tak’s at episode 1. With everything that’s happened, I kinda forgot about it and had to go back and re-watch it again. Like some who’ve theorized here, I would like to believe too that Kim Shin can end his immortality when it pleases him because his punishment had already ended. He came back for Eun Tak and he stayed because she asked him too. Which I feel like, is such a callback to when he told her “Whatever it is, if you say to do it, I’ll do that too” (Ep.10).

And it reminds me so much of one of my favourite quotes that I stumbled on in Tumblr by Kiersten White: “And I’d choose you, in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you.”

That being said, for the special episodes next week, can we please have an epilogue instead and find out how things go with Kim Shin and EunTak/SooMin. Given that at least 60years have passed, I want to see the shock in DeokHwa’s face when Shin shows up with her lol. I want them to be the odd couple that somehow ends up befriending Lee Hyuk and Sunny (did they ever say what her new name is?). How Kim Shin sometimes drops by and helps Hyuk out on his investigations and they both still call him Grim Reaper (and yeah everyone at the precinct pretty much calls him that but sometimes he feels like there’s such a familiarity there when Shin or SooMin does it). Where Kim Shin still bickers with this Sunny and SooMin just rolls her eyes at them laughingly. I want to know so much about SooMin and how her life has been and ok, how about a season 2 instead lol! A season 2 where there’s no truck of doom or death cards and only hijinks and cuteness and kisses ensues and Lee Hyuk who suddenly finds himself being housemates with Kim Shin.:D

Any other versions of translation for this line? Viki subs?

I think it could have been used by the old lady to say that she was a hot chick in her youth. But if anyone knowing Korean and Korean culture would be helpful to understand this. May be its a common phrase there!

On "I used to devour youth back in days".

On Viki it's : "Even though I look like this now, I broke a few hearts in my day."

  6. Sharing this here too:

    De-lurking for this cute exchange:wub:

    PBG: Today too, you're beautiful.

    Hyeri: Taek-ah, congratulations~

    PBG: Thanks, Deoksun-ah.

The MC prods them about how they could be awkward with each other like that.

    PBG: She's my wife.

    Hyeri: He's my husband.

Bonus: RJY holding PBG's name card lol why do you even have it:lol:

Hyeri always calls PBG husband but I think this is the first time we're hearing him call her wife

    3. Why is Sun Woo asking Taek who taught him the cuss words when he was present when DS was teaching Taek these? I found that strange.

I always assumed that it was because the part when he was present happened afterwards (after him asking about it)? That DS was already teaching Taek how to swear off-screen and the part where JH, DR and SW were present was a follow up to that. Cause the trio didn't know why DS was teaching Taek how to swear and Taek was echoing DS's words with less fluster than in episode 4 (when JH and SW were encouraging him to let out his frustrations by swearing).

:tears::tears::tears: I were watching Coin Locker Girl without know anything what will happen to uri Gummy... and then :bawling:

but, CLG is a good project for PBG. He try many different role and ending... sigh... that's one a bad ending ever though...

The same thing happened to me while watching CLG:sweatingbullets: I hadn't seen/read any spoilers yet when I watched it so I didn't know in advance but I had a sense that something bad was going to happen to him so I kept putting the movie on pause just to prolong the moment from happening lol

  10. Haven't been active here in a while (work and travel plans) but I'm just too excited about the possibility of a Kim Go Eun and Park Bo Gum reunion to focus on anything else lol:D I'm obviously rooting for KGE to take the offer because, asides from my obvious coinlocker girl biases, she's talented, can pull off a believable girl-dressing-up-as-a-guy look, we already know they have chemistry and I personally find her very pretty. Her looks are quite chameleonesque (or is it that she's not afraid to change her image to suit her role?). From her character in Eungyo to Monster to Coinlocker girl to CITT.

For those who haven't seen coinlocker girl here's a fmv that let's you skip the main gory bit between the two:

Note: There's still violence in it though.

Also, look at how cute they are during this press release:

Skip to 1:20 to have PBG suddenly staring back at you:wub:

  11. I have to agree that there are parts when YOF-Africa does get boring. I think it's just a combination of all those long drives + lack of natural disasters (lol) + editing.

I've watched three out of four of the YOF series and everyone in each group mostly really get along. They're all adorable and half in awe of each other. Like Son Ho Joon and Baro with Yoo Yeon Seok (Laos) and Kang Ha Neul with his hyungs (Iceland) and they in turn receive a lot of love from them. So I don't think the Africa group are too nice/camera conscious. GKP and AJH have known each other for 7yrs now so they've probably had school/team outings together from way back and already have they're own rapport. RJY loves traveling so it's no surprise that he's efficient and easy going. And I don't think I've ever seen PBG not half in love with his castmates lol. He just really admires them a lot.

Although the Laos group did some traveling too we didn't really see a lot of it. Which makes me think that they probably had more footage to work with and could cut back on those scenes and their travels weren't really as long as Iceland and Africa. Both Laos and Iceland groups had weather problems to make the drive/ride more interesting for the viewers. Laos had a storm (which had the production team telling the guys to wait it off) and Iceland had a snowstorm (which they decided to brave through and made everyone worry) and got lost a couple of times. Granted, the Iceland group were more entertaining during their long drives but I think during the YOF Africa launch there was a reporter who brought up that they found the Iceland installment boring? (so yeah, no pleasing everyone I guess. the aurora borealis scene was everything to me). Plus, there's literally little for the Africa group to do or see during their long drives so I don't know how much more entertaining they could've made it. PBG already caused as much accidents as he could lol;)

I say editing, but I feel that it's more like they could've utilized some footage better? I don't know how to explain it.. Maybe fast forwarded the long drives or they could've shown the interview footage better? Or maybe they could've interviewed the boys more? Unless they did and got nothing which is why we're getting what I feel like are just from two separate interviews cut up into different episodes. With Laos and Iceland, it felt like they were interviewed at the end of each day and they were asked more questions. But I don't know.. I'm sure everyone did their best. More animals should've co-operated and made cameos to have made the long drives more interesting lol:P

I still enjoy watching the show though. I only hope the boys remember it as that and won't let the criticisms get to them.

  12. Some of my personal favorite moments from YOF, episode 5:

    • The boys discover Amarula + their faces when they pair it with sausages, as suggested by Ahn Jae Hong = priceless
    • Go Kyung Pyo and AJH have known each other for about 7 years now.
    • They've run out of food the next morning and Ryu Jun Yeol puts some of that magic salt on his hand and licks it lol
    • GKP hands over all the receipts they've accumulated to the PD and it just feels like something my friends and I do when we travel. Spend, spend, spend and later go through all the receipts to confirm that we've spent as much as we have lol. But we see that he's been stressing out about it and keeping from spending as much so he won't have to say no to the others when they want something.
    • In the car, AJH suddenly starts rubbing his hand together and looking around.
      • PBG wordlessly gives him alcogel.
      • AJH, amazed: How is it like this..
      • AJH: Without saying anything, a magnae (term for the youngest person in the group) who still knows that I need
      • AJH: Is there anyone who has tissue?
      • PBG: I do.
      • PBG, while getting the tissue: Would you like an apple?
      • AJH, after a while: Bogum-ah, you don't have hand cream right?
      • PBG: (Of course) I do.
      • AJH: What don't you have (lol)
    • AJH, GKP and PBG start cooking the tomato sauce when,
      • AJH: How do we cook the noodles?
      • They're "huh" faces all around plus that random bug out of nowhere, it's caption: [Why me??]
      • AJH: Should we not eat noodles? (since they only have one pot to cook on)
      • RJY, pointing at the tomato sauce filled pot: But why did you cook that first?
      • AJH: I didn't think about it (lol)
    • GKP, while looking at the pasta cook: Ah it's delicious
      • AJH: It can't not taste good, they're all pre-cooked products (or canned goods, I think)
      • PBG, while slicing the ham: Why? Everything hyung has cooked has been delicious.
      • AJH, whispers: Say it louder.
      • PBG: Every food hyung has cooked were all delicious.
      • AJH, jokes: No. I haven't done anything (I'm not sure if I got this part right).
    • While PBG and AJH are mixing the spaghetti they're cooking,
      • RJY: Be careful, Bogum-ah.
      • PBG: Ok.
      • AJH: What about me?
      • RJY: Flustered + stuttering (lol)
    • Side note: I really want Chef Bong and Sous Chef PBG to show up in Na PD's three meals a day show.
    • When they decide that PBG should sleep on the bed,
      • PBG: Can't I sleep on the floor? I'm really comfortable sleeping on the floor.
      • RJY: If you sleep on the floor, I'm sleeping on the car.
      • AJH: I'm sleeping on the pool.
      • PBG: Hyung, what have I done to sleep on the bed?
      • AJH: You slept on the car yesterday. You'll be more tired otherwise (something like, his exhaustion will pile up, to be specific).
      • The other three explain something to PBG about him sleeping in the bed and why they got the room, I couldn't quite understand it.
      • RJY: Why are you crying again? You keep crying. *Pinches him in the cheek*
      • PBG explains how he doesn't feel like he's done anything for the group. GKP takes care of the tents, AJH the food, RJY the driving and this and that but he doesn't really do anything. We see a montage then of him folding their clothes and cleaning up, which the PD interviewing him points out but he replies that anyone can do that. He goes on that he feels sorry for the others and how he wants to do something well too. Caption: [You did very well..].
    • After giving PBG a massage (aww Chef bong you're the best),
      • AJH: Bogum-ah, let's go eat something delicious in Seoul.
      • PBG: Ok!
    • AJH, GKP and PBG decide to have a drink before sleeping.
      • PBG to GKP: Wow, it smells really delicious.
      • PBG: I've smelled this a lot somewhere before. It's not chocolate milk, what's this smell?
      • AJH: Let me see, I'll tell you (what it is).
      • AJH smells it and: Caramel Macchiato?
      • PBG is properly amazed: Your right, your right.
      • PBG: That's so interesting.
      • GKP: As expected.
    • So PBG doesn't get drunk but he definitely likes the taste of Amarula, I think he starts checking out how much it is, and he now knows how to mix his own drink according to his preference: 2 parts alcohol to 8 parts milk lol.
    • I love AJH for cleaning RJY's feet and PBG for waking up AJH by giving him a hand massage.
    • The waterfalls scene was just all around amazing plus them chasing after the end of the rainbow. I'm so happy that they were so happy about it and all the hugs. I'm definitely developing an extra soft spot for PBG and AJH together.

A question.... i' m wondering the gold turtle Taek used to propose to DS, was it another one of his winning trophy?  Like the winning bowl trophy he gave to DS as a gift to DS.....after all he has this habit of taking a step further or making progress of his relationship with DS after winning a game. So could this also means he has just won a big match & used his golden turtle trophy to propose to DS, who doesn't seem really impress, becos she prefers his "I love you' better?

I don't think the turtle was a trophy... I personally feel like Taek's proposal is his response to their earlier conversation in 1994 when she was convincing him to hold off on telling their parents about their relationship.

    • 1994 Conversation
      • DS: I'm confident my feelings won't change, aren't you?
      • DS: Taek, I trust you. Does our relationship seem like it's going to change easily?
      • DS: I won't change.
    • 1996 Proposal (I'm assuming it's 1996 cause DS tells us they dated for 2 years)
      • DS: What is this?
      • T: A turtle.
      • DS: What does it mean?
      • T: Eternal love.

I noticed in the '94 scene we didn't really see or hear him directly reply to DS in the car that he feels the same way but he proposes with a symbol of eternal love, which feels like a response to that and a promise.

    And, also this pattern:

    • 1994 Conversation
      • DS: I'll give you a present for doing this.
      • DS, leans in: I love you.
      • Taek gives up, totally slayed by that confession, and DS laughs
    • 1996 Proposal
      • DS: You said you'd be proposing. Is this the end (of the proposal)?
      • T: No.
      • After a pause, T: Deok Sun-ah, I love you.
      • Taek and DS laughs.

Plus, both moments happen with them in the same car, same alley and with DS driving and Taek at the passenger's seat.
