All the talk this morning (my time) about new threads made me remember a topic I wanted to talk about which is actually about Addicted!

There are a few scenes in the series I think are a little weird, but I'm never sure if it's because I'm missing some essential info, maybe because I don't know Chinese culture well enough.

One such scene is the one were a random guy from another class comes in and starts blowing steam and insulting BLY with enormous venom. Whereupon GH goes bezerk and beats him up, to protect what he in his confused state of infatuation with BLY at this point probably consider his damsel in distress who he has to fiercly protect.

    Here's what I find weird:

    1. Why is this guy so angry with BLY? There's not a hint of explanation in the series, to the viewer he really is just randomly angry. I was hoping the novel would explain more, but I just read @estreline's terrific translation (thanks again, dear!) and all that's said is that he's mad that BLY got such good grades. Huh? Was BLY's result published - it's possible, I suppose. Why would that make this guy so angry? I was thinking the explanation would be more personal, like he's BLY's ex-gf's brother, or something. It's just so random.

    2. What's the big deal about BLY's mum? I understand that it's a big deal for BLY, he was abandoned by his mother at a tender age, that definitely hurts. But for other people, why do they care so much? Here's where I feel there's a cultural clash. I'm guessing Chinese society is still a lot more traditional than my own, and that traditional family values are important. Still, like that girl, trying to impress GH by gossiping about BLY's mum also seems odd. Why does she think that particular issue would matter to GH? It's merely coincidence that GH really does care, a lot, since he can relate to how BLY is feeling.

    3. In the novel, GH's attack on this venomous guy is completely over the top. Such excessive violence! I'm so glad they toned that down so much in the series. Not only would it have been too violent, but it also makes it more believable with less. The way he in the novel practically massacared that guy is horrifying to me. Actually, GH's violent streaks over all were very off-putting for me at first. I hate violence and the way it's told, it's like it's perfectly normal, somehow, to beat people up when he feels like it. Particularly when he punches that poor class mate who said BLY had Hep B...

Actually, if you'd turn Addicted into a realistic, kitchen-sink style series, the themes would be pretty dark: GH is possessive and manipulative and forces himself on BLY. He abuses people, is violent and extremely jealous. In such a series, BLY would have to flee to a safe house run by an organisation for abused spouses. ;)

But thankfully, Addicted the tv series, is very light and fluffy, so GH just seems like a big, infatuated puppy who doesn't know how to behave properly. And BLY just has to stand it, since he's also such a nice and very sexy puppy who actually needs some taking care of by BLY. And who'll follow BLY around, everywhere he goes, fiercly loyal. Like a puppy! :)

    What i think:

    1. This guy have some reasones:

The girl he likes in love with BLY, he mad that a poor boy like BLY is better and loved in school, and like you said he angry beacuse BLY get a very hight grades.

    2. He said that BLY's mother is the "lady of the night"= richard simmons, and that BLY is a bastard.:(

I think that in china its rare to not have a mother in young age and who didnt die...

    3. i agree with you:)

    EDIT:

    someone already answerd :sweatingbullets:

  3. i have 3 question/request:
    1. i will be happy to know how GH didn't manage to find that BLY was actually alive for 2 years and when he know that why he didnt search him? (i think it doesn't fit to his image...)

    2. i know that someone post a summery, but i will be happy if someone can translate the chapter in volume 2 when YM show GH what happend in the accident, and what was his reaction -very interesting-.:grimace:

Me too.. but I keep changing the theory many time.. especially when GH giving flirty affection words to BLY starting from i like your handwriting, you are my medicine..if you want me to be better..u need to suffer me..etc.. when BLY drunk, BLY did ask GH is it bcos of the mother matter make GH tease him a lot to feel better.. GH does not give any clear answer..  lastly the clear confession ep 11.. GH clearly said from the 1st time he talk to BLY, he already have the interest to him.. thats make me think that the 1st conversation they had is about the art non human handwriting..

So i have my own theory:
In the start GH was bored and when BLY told him, in the first episode with snob face to pick his ruler, GH understand that he has something to do and someone who could be his friend. dont forget that when he like or dislikes  people he does strange things.
Now that i saw episode 3 i realize that he fall in love with BLY when he saw him walking in the rain (SO HOT):dizzy:
the way he stopped talk and watched him was very special.

@guhai I am looking forward to reading your fanfic!

My interpretation on Lou Yin's psyche, maybe you will find this interesting:

Lou Yin came from broken family. His mother left when he was still a child, because she dissatisfied with his father's economic condition. This, in my opinion, put some barrier for Lou Yin to fall in love with someone. He was afraid to open his heart because opening his heart to love someone means opening his heart for betrayal.

Lou Yin also forced to be an independent kid since young age because his father's was a klutz*. He also has aging grandma (and granpa in the novel?), which left him no choice unless be an independent boy. He could not let himself rely to others, because there was no one to rely on!

*At first, I thought that Lou Yin's father was a real klutz; clumsy, foolish etc just because he was. Now, I think that he was a klutz because his self-esteem was destroyed when Lou Yin's mom left them. I came to this conclusion after seeing Lou Yin's father changed in later episodes. The most profound change happened after he had been promoted. BUT, the first change had happened before that. It was something trivial: He started to cook more properly when Gu Hai came. I do not know what was inside Lou Yin's dad's mind at that time, but maybe Gu Hai's presence with his antics brought freshening atmosphere to the house (and Lou Yin's dad).

So, we have Lou Yin, who was an independent and aloof boy. He was courteous and kind, but he consciously put some distance to other people. If Lou Yin is a river, his stream was kindness but his troubled childhood put some barrier to the stream, preventing it from run freely. This barrier was something that Gu Hai desperately tried to break, as told in the first part of the series.

One of the main weaknesses of the series in my opinion is, it did not show Lou Yin's mid adequately. Gu Hai was an expressive person, it was easy to understand his thoughts through his actions. That was why LuLu could see clearly at their first meeting on how special Gu Hai treated Lou Yin; Gu Hai showed it blatantly as he always does when loving someone. It's just there were selected few who Gu Hai considered worthy enough to get his love and attention.

But Lou Yin, he was a reserved person. He was kind to everyone but no one is closed enough, not even Yang Meng, his childhood friend. When Gu Hai started to break his barrier with his unyielding attention, in one hand Lou Yin felt threatened. If he let Gu Hai in, who know what sort of pain Gu Hai could inflict him in the future? On the other, though, Lou Yin felt happiness. For the first time in his life, he had someone to rely on.

This constant struggle in Lou Yin mind was the one that trouble him the most; he constantly at war with himself on whether he should open his heart to Gu Hai or not. Gu Hai's violent outbursts (kidnapping, raping) were hurting him but at the same time assuring Lou Yin that he can handle these kind of pains that Gu Hai brings with his love. But, maybe, he could not bear the pain of losing Gu Hai. This might be the main reason why Lou Yin left Gu Hai after the accident? Rather than having to wait anxiously on when Gu Hai would leave him (because of changing heart or death), it is better for Lou Yin to leave Gu Hai?

*whew, this is longer than my take on Gu Hai! I hope some of you find it interesting :D

+Plus+ he had a girlfriend who left to USA and because of that he can't sleep...also she has try to come back to him and call him and don't understand that she is hurting him more:bawling:
