I have, for some reason, used a lot of earphones over the years. Everything from the good ol' stock Sony 9mm drivers to custom IEMs (well, Shure S500/SE510/SE530/SE535 reshells anyway).

Cheap: Thermalright Isurus - Good punchy sound. Slight loss in the high frequencies but still better than your regular earphones. Comes with a mic and splitter for its TRRS (phone) connector so you can use the mic with your computer.

Mid-range: Denon C360, Ultimate Ears 350 - both nice and musical and play well with popular electronics. C360 has slightly "warmer" mids.

Don't buy: The iMetal Maximo-something - sounds like you're listening through a plastic cup and string. The non-BA Shures (1 series? I forget) aren't much to speak of either. If you're going to the high-end consumer range, don't get the Sony XBA-4 unless you've tried them yourself - they're the most detailed (across the range) IEMs I've tried but the balance of sound is a bit unusual.

  3. and what do you guys think of this store? http://www.digitalrev.com/en/index.php

you guys think its trustworthy? and like not dodgey? and are the cameras actually real? because its a lot cheaper than normal stores

and do you think their ebay store would be trustworthy? cause i like some of their deals/packages :)

They're definitely a reputable online/ebay store and have been operating a camera business out of Hong Kong for a long time. They've got a nice youtube channel - their frontman has a recognisable childish Estuary English accent .

Not sure whether they're grey market or not but they do have a better warranty policy than other grey market stores.

  4. Hey everybody, this is my first time venturing into the Tech - Cell Phones forum ^^ I'm on AT&T and up for an upgrade to a new phone, it'll be my first smartphone yay! I'd really like to get an Android, but I've heard that AT&T doesn't allow you to install third-party apps on the phone -- is this such a big disadvantage that I should look at other phones instead? What am I really missing by only getting apps from Android Market?

I'm mainly looking at Samsung Captivate and HTC Aria -- Does anybody use one of these on AT&T? How do you like it so far?

Thanks so much for the help!

    -Stephanie

I've been using an unlocked Captivate for a little while and I find I only need a couple of apps from the android market. I mainly use sipdroid to make use of my ISP's free VOIP service - wherever there's wifi, I can make calls for next to nothing and subsequently I've downgraded to a $10/month plan (http://www.iinet.net.au/mobile/byo-10-plan/).

As for my opinion on the captivate; the Super AMOLED screen is a generous size and is pleasant to look at - it makes many other screen types look washed-out in comparison. It's quite thin, and much lighter than I expected. The hardware seems quite capable too. The only drawback is that Samsung is slow to release software updates (Android 2.3 has been released and Samsung hasn't even mentioned an update from 2.1 to 2.2 yet). I flashed to a custom ROM based on 2.2 just yesterday and it seems to work fine so far, but really I'd prefer a polished official release.

I agree with Hermit's take on it. This kind of ending started making sense to me mid-way through the season, around the time the Richard Alpert back-story was shown.

PristineNyte: You have a new phone now?

... and hi IonNuke... I recognise you from other forums

I'm looking at the slim models like the docomo P-03B:

    http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/product/foma/sm...3b/gallery.html

    Maybe in black/silver or white/silver.

I see a few on YAJ:

    http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w47893887

but not sure how much they usually sell for

If it says it does 3G and global roaming. That doesn't mean it can do 3G in other countries right?

  7. I think we've majorly hijacked this thread haha. I guess we just needed a general discussion thread about this sort of stuff.

Anyway, to blatantly continue this derailment...

Hahaha, I'm currently trying to sell my 707SC II so I can buy a Docomo.

Really wanting to get this beauty, the N-02a

    http://www.n-keitai.com/n-02a/images/des_img_01.jpg

Does anyone know if the keypad is flat like a razr or the 707SC, or if it actually has separate buttons. I prefer separate buttons.

Ah I think the buttons are where you and I differ, I kinda like the the flat buttons. I find I'm liking the P-04A http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/product/foma/sm...4a/gallery.html. As for selling my old one, I don't think I can sell it for much... It's taken a bit of damage from keys and other pocket-related items over the years and now it has "character"...
If Docomo and Softbank released international versions, they wouldn't exactly be considered 'exotic' phones anymore. I wouldn't want one after that.
I can see how the rarity (at least outside of Japan) is part of the appeal but I'm not so concerned about trying to stand out. I just simply don't like the look of most of the phones on offer where I am. I mean I wouldn't object if the new line of docomo/softbank phones were discovered to be more compatible with my network, or even if a new hypersim became available that allowed me to use the internet.
  8. Dammit some of the newer ones are so pretty it almost hurts.

Why doesn't internet work? Why??? We need to petition docomo and softbank to release international versions. I mean half these phones have 3G international roaming anyway so shouldn't be too hard to just change the firmware a little right?

Ah well, I think I'll be sticking to my 707 for a little while longer.

  9. p1000092y.jpg

Handily, I have this pic from testing out a new camera last month. It's ye olde Samsung/Softbank 707SCII that I bought a couple of years ago... The two annoying things are that it has no predictive texting and net/email only works on Japanese networks. Also, the phone was released before there was widespread use of Windows Vista and last time I checked there were no drivers/software for Vista, let alone the English version of Vista.

May I ask whether T9 input or internet works on the docomo phones? I'm looking for a new phone in a similar light/slim folding style though I'd really like better functionality. I've just ordered Windows 7 too so I hope history doesn't repeat itself with the new phone not playing well with the new OS.

    [pic will go here later]

    pros:

    -looks nice +10

    -light/thin

    -buttons are reasonably responsive

-popular in japan, but more rare outside of

-screen has good picture colour and detail

-does all the things you want

    cons:

-can only be opened with two hands unlike my old RAZR where you can jam a finger in the side

-doesn't have an english dictionary so texting is slow as you have to text old-school style by pressing numbers repeatedly to select the letter

-frame rate is a bit slow, and it's obvious when you're navigating the main menu as the animations are quite choppy

i bought the 4GB M6 in january and i did a little review in this thread. the whole setup has taken quite a beating and has been out in the rain at least half a dozen times as i walk (or run as the case may be) to work.

the M6SL has lost the mirror-finish metal back plate and is a fair bit thinner, has also lost 1mm or so from both length and width. the "play/pause/power" button on the M6 is no longer there on the M6SL, replacing the "enter" button on the touchpad.

^ main screen turn on. the M6SL screen is about the same size and appears more pinkish. both screens have some sort of rainbow/light refracting ill-effect when viewing it out in the daylight, which slightly discolours the screen in a rainbow pattern.

the stock earphones are the same as from a year ago - they're good compared to some other stock earphones, though bass is lacking.

^ one down side to the new SL model is that videos play back with a bit of a blue tint whereas the screen seemed to be a bit better on M6. the photo makes it look a lot worse than it actually is. it's not a huge problem as you quickly forget about it when watching stuff, but i'd still be hanging out for a software update that fixes this or lets us play with the screen's settings etc.

i spent two hours testing the sound in a range of different ways and have come to the conclusion the M6SL definitely brings the mid-range forward a bit more, making a few instruments like the violin and piano more noticeable - more subtly, the highs are a tiny bit softer than the M6, bass is similar on both... there's really not a massive amount of difference on the whole though. video-watchers may prefer the original model for now as the screen seems to have been a sacrifice when they were trying to make it even smaller than what it already was.

-sound is surprisingly good on the stock earphones - treble and midrange are good, but bass lacks definition as demonstrated by the lack of ability to reproduce bass drum detail on the included demo FLAC track (at most points, you can barely hear the bass drum at all, even when playing with the EQ and bass boost. i was able to hear it more clearly on other earphones though).

-the bundled video conversion software is preset to quick and dirty encoding, which is generally good for small videos. however, the only problem is that your regular 25-30fps SD videos or 50-60fps HD videos don't exactly decimate nicely down to 18fps and so converted videos will have a slight jerk every second or so, even when played back on the computer. the motion may be smoothed out slightly by going from 30fps to 15fps (i haven't tried it yet) but 15fps is already starting to get a little low.

Oh by the way, what do you guys think of the Sennheiser CX300, I was planning to get it on ebay. This one here, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BRAND-NEW-Sennheise...1QQcmdZViewItem

the price is okay but I don't want fake ones. I know they're around 60usd but this seller has had great feedback and all

i bought a pair of sony ex90s from the stores and later found the cheap version on ebay - i thought maybe these cheap ones are "fell off the back of the truck" versions that would be identical to genuine so i bought a pair to chuck in my uni bag. when i received it, it came in a proper box and everything, but i noticed they didn't include the usual extras like manual and carry case etc... next i noticed the silver parts were grey rather than silver and the rubber sleeves were slightly more stiff/opaque than the genuine ones. at this point i was still hopeful that maybe the insides were at least a backwards engineered replica. however, when i listened to them, the sound was horrendous - worse than anything i'd ever heard (no joke).

i don't know, maybe there are some genuine "factory surplus" ones out there but the ex90s i got weren't even worth the $15 or however much it was.

that meizu player looks pretty good, maybe i'll get one...

i'm still using MDs at the moment

my first MP3 player was an MPMan F20 that i bought in HK in the late 90s. from memory, it had 32MB storage, parallel port extreme slowness galore, and one AA battery for 1.5 hour's worth of music, not to mention the dodgiest looking homebrew software you've ever seen... hopefully MP3 players have come a long way since those days

    hey range, i was wondering...

i bought a second-hand dell laptop not too long ago and it came with a 90w charger. on the dell website, i noticed that on my model, they give a charger that's say 65w as standard, but also give you an option to upgrade to a 90w charger... is the higher wattage supposed to charge the battery quicker or something? it doesn't say what it's for...

my main question is that will idling draw the same amount of electricity on both chargers?

also, out of curiosity, if i have my laptop plugged in and turned on most of the time, would it be best to remove the battery? i formatted the thing and did my own OS installation and am using the windows default battery management software rather than the dell software.

    ahaha it's this thread again...

having a penis gets annoying sometimes because you have to choose what type of underwear to wear depending on the level of physical activity you'll be doing in the day... e.g. if everyone wore boxers while playing basketball, there'll be a lot of mysterious flopping noises so you have to have briefs on those days, but they don't feel as comfortable. yes, it's a harsh life being a man.

the appearance of the package also depends on the weather... when you get a cool breeze on your nuts, the anatomy will retract towards the body
