  1. It is probably a sleepless night for those loyal fans of Descendants of the Sun in the Asian zone, and a restless afternoon for me here in NYC. What an ending to Episode 10!! It was totally not what I could have expected, absolutely not what I should have witnessed, and surely not what I would have hoped for any of my most cherished foursome: Si-jin, Mo-yeong, Dae-young and Myeong-joo. All the happiness vanished in a blink of an eye!! This drama is so terrifyingly realistic and brilliantly dreadful!

I had so much to say before I saw how the fate is twisted and turned up side down in the end of Episode 10, but now all I have left is my sincere prayer that the almighty creators would wisely surprise us with a different outcome from what it seems to be heading towards, just as we have been granted thus far for every single event in each episode. This is the first time I can’t 100% say that I look forward to the next episodes, but I have a week to prepare myself. One thing for certain is that it will be a very long and taxing week for us all until next Wednesday. Brace yourself, one and all.

  2. It would appear that many of us are very eager to find out what kind of twists and turns will be bestowed onto the fate of the people who we have come to love so dearly and with whom we empathize so deeply in "Descendants of the Sun", especially the main characters, but I just don’t see the benefit in speculating about the ending already as we are still at the early stage of the journey!!

I do very much look forward to every Wednesday and Thursday for the new episodes, but I also want to take my time and savor every single poignant moment this drama has brought to me. Yes, we can all become the most arduous critics unapologetically picking apart every scene to point out the flaws. Yes, we can all self-proclaim as the most protective guardians of individual actor/actress unjustly attributing the success to one or a few instead of glorifying the group effort. Yes, we can all pretend to be the imposing know-better story-tellers unashamedly conjuring up some biased views to produce so-called real purpose of the characters/plot. But why bother? After all, where is the fun when we can’t just behave like the true spectators and simply let those involved in creating this marvelous drama shine brightly?

To ensure my incessant enjoyment of this drama, I made several conscious decisions after finishing Episode 1: I will NOT venture in guessing what will happen to the life on Uruk in the coming weeks, I will NOT try to analyze the plot for faults or complain about characters for wrongdoings, and I will NOT read about any unsubstantiated leaks or fictitious findings from any sources. You might think that I am simply too lazy to make an effort to dig deeper in all the events as they are unfolded. However, all I really want is for this drama to carry on with its unbelievable magic as it has been since the beginning - every tear shed, every smile shone, every word spoken, every gesture made,  and all the courage, determination and love demonstrated - so I will continue to watch it as it is intended to be played out.

It is not about how it ends, it is about the spectacular views on the way to the finale. We still have a long way to go, so let’s be patient and be absolutely grateful that we have been provided with such a splendid drama for entertainment in weeks to follow.

  3. This is going to be a very short post as I am just way too overwhelmed and absolutely exhausted after witnessing the life in Uruk being put in such a precarious situation.

This is probably one of the best produced episodes in any dramas ever. It is so beyond the ordinary life where most people are consumed by trivial feelings and insignificant struggles. Growing up with plenty of experience being shaken up by earthquakes, I know exactly how scary and terrifying it is to be in the midst of such an unpredictable disaster. I have the utmost respect to those who run towards the dangers when everyone is trying to get away: first responders/rescuers, paramedics, firefighters/police/soldiers, etc. It is also due to such courage and sacrifice, we are humans and we see humanity and hope when everything else fails.

Well done, the entire crew and cast of “Descendants of the Sun”, as you have provided not only a great drama for pure entertainment but also challenged us to be better than who we are with an inspiring story. I am in awe!

  4. There are so many memorable moments in Episode 5, as in the previous ones. It's like a roller coaster ride and I could hardly hold on to my seat as so many emotions were flowing through. Absolutely overwhelming!!

However, the car ride to find the little boy was the ultimate highlight for me. It simply broke my heart when I heard Shi-Jin confess to Mo-yeon (note: my translation is based on the Chinese subtitles I saw on the Chinese site): "You can avoid talking about it (the kiss) and you can be mad at me, but please don't think of it as a bad thing. After all, I thought of it a thousand times before gathering enough courage to do it." Have you ever heard of anything more sincere than theses words? Have you ever been talked to with such an honest tone? I would have hugged Shi-jin so tightly if I were Mo-yeon.

Then, in the end Shi-jin asked Mo-yeon: "About kissing you without your primission, should I apologize or should I confes my love to you?" I felt like screaming to Mo-yeon through my iPad: "Let him confess please and be ready to be swept away by his passion!"  I know it's way too early for this kind of development, but one can always dream.

    Is it Thursday yet?

  5. It is Tuesday afternoon here in NYC, and I am thinking: Yes, Episode 5 of “Descendants of the Sun” will be available by this time tomorrow, and I will get to find out more about the life on Uruk. The last time I got this excited about a TV drama of any kind? Well, I can’t recall. I might have been looking forward to the new episodes of a few in the past, but never like this as I am trying to clear my Wednesday/Thursday schedule so that I will be able to have a break later for Episode 5/6. It is absolutely crazy, but I know I am not alone on this boat!

I have been wondering why I am so drawn to this drama: the beautiful faces, the admirable performance, the awe-inspiring landscape, the brilliant cinematography, the moving soundtracks, etc. However, I think it is largely due to the simplicity of the plot which speaks about the innermost desires that we all share: we want to feel passionate about life, thrive to excel in everything we do, march on with undeterred faith and determination, and we ultimately want to fall in love with the right person in the instant connection. Nothing complicated: just a man and a woman who are attracted to each other, they speak their minds and they go for it. It might work out, but it might not. Some might get a second chance, but others might not. That’s life: unpredictable and challenging but always full of hopes as long as we work hard and never surrender without a fight. I am not sure what is waiting ahead of Shi-jin, Mo-yeon and all the other characters, but I hope to see them put forth their hearts and souls to live their lives to the fullest.

This is definitely the first time I don’t think I care too much if the love story in a drama will come to fruition and whether the lovers will get to live happily ever after. Don’t get me wrong as I am all for a happy ending. However, in this case with Shi-jin and Mo-yeon, they are already cemented as one in my mind. So, even if they are not together physically in the end, they are forever ONE spiritually.

    Is it Wednesday yet?

  6. It has been a long time since a drama of any kind could successfully catch my attention from the very first 5 minutes. I wasn't going to watch it as I didn't like the pairing of SJK and SHK. I've always been a fan of SHK since her amazing debut in "Autumn in My Heart" and I absolutely enjoyed SJK performance in "The Innocent Man", but I just thought SHK's well-honed sense of presence would just make her look too old/mature for SJK's seemly boyish appearance. To my surprise, the chemistry between these two as Yoo Shi-Jin and Kang Mo-Yeon is just magical!! SHK's natural beauty and SJK's easy charisma compliment each other so brilliantly!!! The immediate attraction and the physical pull, enhanced by the cleverly-written dialogues, intriguingly-constructed plot and beautifully-shot cinematography, grabbed my heart so tightly that I couldn't help but fall in love with this drama.

I simply can't wait to find out if and how Shi-Jin and Mo-Yeon find their courage and faith to fall in love again with all the challenges unbeknownst to them in the harsh territory of Uruk.

  7. It has been a dreadful day for me as I have been stuck in meetings all day until now. As I was taking a short break browsing around on-line, I accidentally bumped into this bts from Angel Eyes, I couldn't stop laughing!! I know I shouldn't have laughed at this as it could have been a serious accident if LSY had fallen from the rock, so thank God for the great balance that LSY has.
LSYssi: For your own safety and for the sake of your fans who would be heartbroken if you were ever injured, please try to pick a level ground to sit/kneel down while reading the script, OK?

I can't believe that there is more interview coming out after nearly two months of promoting Santa Barbara. I am certainly not complaining as we do need our daily dose of human vitamin, don't we?

A fan from HK attended the birthday party, and shared this photo of LSY all smiling and happy. She mentioned that LSY was nicely dressed for the occasion (very handsome). It was apparently a fun event as she laughed so much that she was having a sore throat, and she clapped her hands so hard that they were all achingly red. She got to shake hands with LSY and let LSY know that she came all the way from HK to be there, so it was all worthy it!!

Thank you, HK Fan, for sharing your experience and thank you for being a wonderful fan.

  9. On this cloudy Sunday afternoon, sitting in front my computer and ready to start working through my very long to-do list, all of sudden, a beautiful smile came to my mind. It was Park Dong Joo’s first smile from Episode 2 of Angel Eyes. Ah, I do miss you, my dear boy, Park Dong Joo.

LSY as Park Dong Joo, is the real reason why I continued watching Angel Eyes. I was really not planning on getting addicted to a Korean drama and certainly not a Korean actor again. Last time, I was hooked to a character from a drama was more than a decade ago – it was SSH as YJS in Autumn in My Heart. There hasn't been anyone or any drama in between.

This might sound funny, but I watch Korean dramas during my daily workout as most of the Korean dramas are just mindless entertainment perfect companions when I struggle to stay on the treadmill. I will watch at least two episodes before I decide if I will finish it or just skip it. I was going to give up on Angel Eyes as I didn't connect with the young DJ/SW right away and found the storyline was a bit too depressing. However, as soon as I saw LSY as PDJ make his grand appearance on a bicycle gliding along the bridge, I knew I found a reason to keep on watching it. My heart skipped a beat when I saw DJ took a deep breath with his eyes closed and his face tiled to the blue sky, and I remember asking myself “Who is this guy, so lovely and yet so manly? How can a guy smile like an angel: so innocent and so genuine?” I knew there and then that I am once again falling in love with another Korean actor. The feeling is exactly the same as the first time I saw SSH as YJS emerge from the dark tunnel on a bike. It is love at first sight and it is love that will last for years to come.

I rarely cried for any dramas; however, I found myself tearing up just from seeing DJ, on his bike, tracing his way back to SW’s house at the end of Episode 2. LSY was able to beautifully deliver so many emotions that DJ was going thought with just subtle changes on his facial expression: profuse excitement mixed with weighty remorse, blissful ecstasy shadowed by yawning anxiety, fervent anticipation intensified by total determination, and heartfelt love deepened with aching yearn. It was just excellent acting from LSY right from the start and it heightened and persisted till the end. There is no doubt in my mind that LSY’s successful embodiment of PDJ contributed momentously to the brilliance of Angel Eyes.

As a new fan, the more I get to know LSY as an actor and as a person through his previous works and various interviews, the more I am fond of him. I love the sincerity in his being, the respectfulness his attitude, the eagerness in his aspiration, and the professionalism in his presence. Of course, I also love his striking beauty, effortless charisma and that one and only celestial smile which could brighten up every dark corner. I really look forward to more greatness coming from LSY.

OK, now back to work seriously…

I think I have lost counts as to how many interviews LSY has done so far since he started to promote for Santa Barbara. Well, I am not complaining: the more media coverage, the better!!
From the rough Google translation, this Q&A interview focuses primarily on the film itself. I think (well, I guess based on the Google translation) the last question is about the character LSY would like to play/try next, and his answer is again "a villain". Well, I am with you LSY and I hope you'll be give the opportunity to portray a villain and I know you are going to be awesome as a really good "bad guy".

  11. Arirang Showbiz Korea (in English) - Press Conference of Santa Barbara

This video contains a good summary from the VIP premiere press conference on July 9. It does look like LSY and YJS had a great deal of fun filming this movie (a lot of drinking and eating, worried about gaining weight...) and they seem to get along really well.

LSY won the BBF Popular Star Award in 2013, perhaps for his performance and the enormous popularity gained from My Daughter Seo Young (?). This is the first time I have seen this video since I am a "new" fan. LSY looked very handsome all suit up accepting his award, and he appeared to be quite a gentleman as he made sure "ladies first" for In Na Yoo.

StorySeoul, the present day. When a group of angry parents storm a music school to reclaim their tuition fees, musician-composer Kim Jeong-u (Lee Sang-yun), who teaches there, has his guitar taken by a creditor. This causes him to procrastinate even more over finishing scoring an indie film by his director friend, Kim Yu-tae (Seo Beom-seok). At a dinner with Yu-tae and his actress Ho-gyeong (Shin Dong-mi), Jeong-u meets Ho-gyeong's younger step-sister, Lee Su-gyeong (Yun Jin-seo). He takes a liking to her but she is non-committal towards him. Looking for money to buy back his beloved guitar, he is commissioned to write a jingle by the advertising agency at which, by chance, Su-gyeong is a creative director; when he is given another job by the company, scoring a chicken commercial that is Su-gyeong's project, she is grateful to him for finding a well-known name, Baek (Baek Hyeon-jin), to direct it. Jeong-u and Su-gyeong spend time together, and discover a shared interest in wine, but she remains evasive when he suggests taking their relationship further. Only after he passes out from too much drink one night does she agree to officially start dating. However, thanks to his procrastinating, Jeong-u only has two days left in which to re-score the chicken commercial and also finish Yu-tae's film. Su-gyeong is furious when he doesn't meet the deadline and the company loses the contract. But her boss, Son (Kim Jeong-eun), isn't worried as she's quitting to start a new company, and Su-gyeong joins her. Later, Jeong-u is again thrown together by chance with Su-gyeong when his friend, Yong-rak (Lee Gyu-hwi), recommends him for a job at Son's company. The two decide to give their relationship a second chance and travel to California together to work on the project. Jeong-u meets his younger sister So-yeong (Esom), who lives there and whom he hasn't seen for five years; their mother lives nearby. As the head of a recording studio they are to use keeps failing to turn up, Jeong-u, Su-gyeong and So-yeong while away time together, including a visit to a winery in Santa Barbara.

    Review

Four years after his debut with the pitch-perfect two-hander Second Half 맛있는 인생(2010), indie producer-turned-director David CHO 조성규 | 曺聖奎 returns to similar subject-matter with his fourth feature, Santa Barbara 산타바바라. Less of a whole than Second Half — which followed a failed producer and a young woman on a culinary tour of Gangwon province — it's still very much in the same mode, self-reflexively set in the media world, close to a conversation piece, and led by an indecisive male character who's trying to find his emotional bearings. Slightly reminiscent again of HONG Sang-soo 홍상수 | 洪常秀's movies (though without their irony and playfulness), the focus here is wine rather than food; and the undercurrent that pulls the film along this time is not whether the two leads are related but whether they will ever manage to have a proper relationship.

In his first leading role on the big screen, TV drama actor LEE Sang-yun 이상윤 | 李相侖 is okay in a rather wide-eyed way as Jeong-u, a terminally indecisive musician-composer whose world is thrown for a double loop when he loses his beloved guitar and also falls for Su-gyeong, an ad agency account manager who plays hard to get. Finding common ground in their love of wine, and also a desire to visit the locations in the US movie Sideways, they both end up working on a project that takes them to Santa Barbara. The first hour mosies along in a charming way as the two grow closer and Su-gyeong finally decides to give him a chance (though more from professional gratitude); however, when Jeong-u fails to meet a deadline, she ditches him. Thrown together again by work, they decide to give things a second chance and end up travelling to California, where Jeong-u has a younger sister, and both realise their ambition of visiting a Santa Barbara winery.

Like Second Half, the movie is all in the chemistry between the leads, and actress YUN Jin-seo 윤진서 | 尹珍序 (horror Someone Behind You 두사람이다 (2007), romanceSecret Love 비밀애 (2009), drama Gyeongju 경주) manages to maintain interest in the insouciant, off-hand Su-gyeong, who has her own career and goals and isn't about to compromise them for a charming but unreliable musician. The film loses some traction in the final half-hour, as it shifts to California, though young actress Esom 이솜 (aka Lee Som), who debuted as the "daughter" in Second Half, livens things up as Jeong-u's spacey younger sister. The film's heart lies in the conversation scenes between the two leads in the first half, in which both talk around the main subject (their possible relationship) the whole time. But with a large collection of strong supporting players — including KIM Jeong-eun 김정은 | 金諪恩 (the tough female trainer in handball drama Forever the Moment 우리 생애 최고의 순간 (2008)) as Su-gyeong's boss, SHIN Dong-mi 신동미 | 申東美 as Su-gyeong's step-sister, and cameos by BAEK Hyeon-jin 백현진 as an egotistical director and Hong Sang-soo favourite KIM Tae-u 김태우 | 金泰宇 — the movie isn't as tightly wound round the central duo as it should be.

Technical credits are smooth, with d.p. LEE Hui-seop 이희섭 (who shot Cho's The Winter of the Year was Warm 내가 고백을 하면... (2012)) making the most of the Californian light, and the gently jazzy, cocktail-bar score nudging things along.

A very interesting title of this article. From the tough translation, it looks like once again LSY touched upon his "perceived" image and considered changing it. It seems to be a rather popular topic for him lately.

Some very lucky fans in SK got to see LSY in person as he has been on the road busy promoting Santa Barbara from theater to theater. Despite the crazy schedule, he seemed to be in a very good mood: lovely bright smile and animated facial expression.
Hm... with the glasses on, LSY looked so young, almost like a college student, just adorable!!
