So I filled out the survey like j79 told me to, and I made a call to the apple store. I talked to the manager over the phone and I'm seeing her tomorrow. I've explained that tomorrow would be my 11th visit to the genius bar but I don't think I'm getting an exchange since the iMac's only had like, 2 problems (once the hard drive just died the second time this whole screen fiasco). I think I came out sounding really whiny
I could feel that the manager (who was a woman) was faking sympathy.Hopefully something good will come out of the meeting! A bit off topic, but how do you like your M8?

I'm now a proud new owner of a Macbook Pro....FINALLY!! It's exciting because it's my first mac (sadly, even though I am a designer). But I asked my boss for a mac, and he said yes!! YAY! I got a magenta colored casing for it, so it matches my iPod nano.
OMG, that's awesome! How do you like it!?! Where do you work?!? (I actually work in a .NET shop, so I'm on a Windows machine all day...it's quite sad
But, my immediate coworkers are Mac users, as well as a few PM/BAs ...so our skype chats typically turn into one large Windows-bash-fest.) -
So I took the iMac to the apple store for the fifth time and there were a bunch of what appeared to be dead pixels in the screen. It turned out that while they had taken off the glass casing, a lot of dust had set on the LCD panel so they cleaned it out, but there were still dust on it so it still looked like there were dead pixels. We turned it on after they had cleaned it and I could still see some of the dust. I know that I was the last appointment in the genius bar at 8:40pm, the employees were tired after a long day, and I was definitely nitpicking. But I got some serious attitude from two of the geniuses. The girl who was helping me out clearly showed that she was annoyed that I was nitpicking, and another genius (who wasn't even helping me out before) sort of sided with her and explained (sounded more like complaining though) that the environment isn't completely dust free like the manufacturing factory and they're not robots who can make it "perfect." And even though this is the fifth time I had to bring my iMac to the apple store, technically it still was just the LCD flickering problem that the iMac had (first time they replaced the wrong parts, second time they claimed it was perfect, third time they replaced a lot of parts but scratched up the computer, fourth time they replaced the scratched areas, and fifth time because of the dust), so I'm not eligible for an exchange. My brother was with me and he definitely noticed the attitude problems of the two geniuses (especially the guy who practically accused me of being some crazy strung up b_tch who needs everything to be perfect); I think I'm making a call to AppleCare and the store manager tomorrow or the day after.
I once got pretty lousy service from an Apple "Genius" -- I was more annoyed at his smugness with another customer than his lack of concern for my issue. Basically, he straight out lied to a guy, and I knew it was a lie...
Anyways, I went online and gave some feedback (http://www.apple.com/retail/feedback/) which was pretty negative. Very next day, I had managers calling me. If you haven't yet, you should give some feedback on those two Apple "Geniuses".
Got a new Mac Mini today. I hooked it up to the TV. Now I can watch all the streaming TV shows I wantNice!! I'm actually heading over to the Apple store to pick up a new Mac Mini as well

im just curious but is there an anti-virus program for the mac? also im running windows xp with fusion and i had norton 2009 installed on there and somehow when i installed the free update for it, it says that my product key is invalid and that my subscription went to trial mode. if i get a virus or something from the windows will it affect my mac hardware?
Hi,
If a virus infected your Windows install, it would be limited to just your Windows partition (or disk image if it's virtualized) and any shared folders you give access to.
If you are running Windows in a virtual environment (Parallels, for instance) a good way to protect yourself is to copy/back up the Windows disk image (the 'hdd' file for Parallels) after a fresh install, so you have a clean copy incase something were to happen.
okay so i have no clue what is up with my mac booklike the battery bar is sooo messed up
earlier in the day it would say it has 10 hours left(which is like impossible)
and now it says it has 0%
and without the charger after like 30 min of use it would shutdown
even if its fully charged
and with the charger the light says its green and fully charged but it isnt and the battert says not charging and has 0%
anyway to fix it? plus i dont have a warranty or w/e -____-

Have you tried calibrating your battery? It may give you a few extra cycles. Otherwise, it's probably time for a new battery. I would go into the Apple store and ask them what's up - depending on who you get (some Apple geniuses are cooler than others), they may just swap out the battery for you.

Here are the directions for calibrating a battery, if you haven't done so yet.
1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
3. Disconnect the power adapter with the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, you will see the low battery warning dialog on the screen.
4. Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep.
5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

Can anyone please answer my question? Or, possibly give me some feedback, please? It would really help. It's been a day since the possible installation of the virus into my macbook.

I would not worry! Applications (exe files) intended for a Windows machine can not run in OS X (without some sort of emulation such as VMWare/Parallels/Darwine)
The site you encountered was most likely an attempt to sell you software! Seriously, Virus Doctor Software, along with a ton of other spyware/malware/grayware/etc. scanners all have one objective : To scare you into buying their software. Those flashy banners, "Your computer is infected with spyware! Scan here to remove it!" are nothing but sales leads for these companies. The worst (and often humorous for us Mac users) are those that have been designed to mimic Windows operating systems to really add that extra "fear factor"
That's not to say our beloved OS is perfect....but rest assured, right now, you're pretty much safe from all the malicious viruses/spyware/adware/etc that plagues our PC brethren ;D

Most consumer laptops are pretty much impossible to upgrade the video cards. When I purchased my MBP, I went with the cheapest model that had the best video card, intending to upgrade the RAM and HDD later (especially the RAM -- it's way over priced from Apple...)

Besides aesthetics, one of the biggest differences between the MacBook and MacBook Pro are their graphics cards. MacBooks utilize Shared Integrated Video (Intel GMA X3100) whereas the MacBook Pro has a dedicated video card. Higher end software will sometimes require the higher end graphics cards to run (for instance, Apple's Final Cut Studio...)
Also, it's becoming more popular for the OS to use the graphics card to render things (for better performance)
Depends on what you're looking to do in school/life
Trungy, my favorite is, without a doubt, Screen Sharing - I know it's basically VCN, but the fact that it's built in and works perfectly, makes it great. I use it everyday!
Third party, I LOVE BBEdit.

I just received my new black Macbook today as a graduation present from a teacher I've known for long time. I wish I hadn't opted for the 4GB version because I could have installed 4GB of RAM myself for half the cost Apple charges. Oh well.
If you guys have tried both Microsoft Office for Mac and iWorks, which do you prefer?
I really wanted to like iWorks, but Numbers is horribly slow after a while. I tried out Excel and have stuck with Office since...

I installed bootcamp though and Clubbox does not work =[ You can install it, but it never runs. Same thing happened to my friend's sister who has a macbook.
That's weird. It runs perfectly fine through Parallels. I would imagine that Boot Camp would be more "compatible" than Parallels (or any other emulation environment..)
Maybe I'm wrong?

Transmission is the best app for BT
I use Azureus and Transmission. Transmission is perfect for private trackers (since it has no DHT support) - but for public trackers, lack of DHT kind of hurts speeds. I hear that uTorrent is in the works for Mac OS X, but it's going sloooooow....
But I agree - Transmission is awesome!! Nice, light weight app

does anyone know if BT, Clubbox, and Maplestory work for MACbooks.
Is "BT" Bit-Torrent? If it is, then yes, Bit-Torrent works fine on a Mac (in OS X)
However, ClubBox and Maplestory do not work natively on OS X. You can either dual boot (choose OS X or Windows at boot time) or run Windows under an emulated environment - along side OS X (which, btw is awesome!) The latest version of OS X allows you to set up "spaces" - so you can run all your Windows apps in one space and all your OS X apps in another space.
Here's an example of it:
OS X dock/menu bar are usually hidden (so, it looks like Windows full screen)
You can also run Parallels in "Coherence" or "Windows" mode (both shown in following youtube video)

So I jumped the gun and purchased a new MacBook. I love it thus far. Of course, the two greatest challenges for me right now is: A. Trying to adapt to the new operating system. I went from 10.3 (What is that, Panther?) to 10.5. According to some Mac enthusiasts, the jump is monumental. I don't disagree. B. Trying to figure out how to change the fricken time zone. For the past hour, I've been keeping track of what time it is in pacific time zone. That's great for when/if I move there, but currently, it is a pain to keep thinking, "Oh wait, it is only 2. Whew~"
I could imagine!! After I upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4, I helped a friend out with her iBook that was running 10.3. It was foreign to me! Haha. I can't even imagine going back to 10.3 now....
You may have figured this out, but to change the Time Zone, go to System Preferences, click Date & Time, choose Time Zone, and click roughly the location of where you want to set the Time Zone for.

Why would I get an external hard drive AND a time machine? A time machine is an external hard drive O_O
Actually, Time Machine refers to the software in OS X that does the back up. Apple sells "Time Capsule", which is a wireless router with either 500GB or 1TB HDD built in that allows you to sync/backup wirelessly. If you don't need the wireless router, Time Capsule isn't the right product.

When I was using the video in Photo Booth with Macbook, it said it was recording and when I stopped only a few seconds came out.
Like it would say 4:30:24 and then when I clicked the button it would say 9 seconds.
Is there something wrong with my photo booth or is that just how it is?
I didn't know you could record video in Photo Booth???

But i have another question (it's my first time using a laptop). It's about the battery, what's the best way to preserve it? Some people it's better not to charge it when using the MBP, but others say it's ok to charge the battery while using the laptop.
And can someone explain what Apple means with the cycle thing, about charging battery's...? I don't really understand what they are saying...When does a new cycle begins? When i charge the battery till 100%?
In the past, laptop batteries used NiMH technology. With these, you had to fully charge and then fully drain the battery to extend the life. If you charged the battery, and then recharged the battery at half drain, the battery could develop a "memory" issue. This was actually a hardening of the material inside the battery (the battery would crystalize) - Almost all new batteries use Lithium Ion (or Li-ion) which does not suffer the NiMH memory issue (no hardened crystals.) Inside a Li-ion battery is a microchip that basically tells the computer how many times the battery has been charged, the remaining life of the battery, etc.
There are some people who will say you shouldn't charge your battery if it's full - but, this stems from the days of NiMH - it's okay to charge your battery while using your laptop with Li-Ion batteries.
However, with Li-Ion batteries, you do want to re-calibrate your battery at least once a month. While it doesn't suffer from the NiMH-type "memory" issue, the microchip inside can become "confused" and start reporting inaccurate numbers to your laptop. One thing, though: Li-Ion batteries begin degrading the moment they're manufactured. So, if you bought a laptop that was sitting on a shelf for a year (doing nothing), there's a good chance it's lost anywhere from 4 - 15% of it's charge (depending on battery charge and temperature)
Even worse! The hotter it gets, the quicker your battery will die. So, you can probably imagine the effect laptops have on Li-Ion batteries
Especially after a year of using it in a MBP! Haha... -

I have one as well! It's so much better than any Netgear/Linksys I owned in the past. I have it running in "N" mode only (for my MBP) and have my Mini and G5 hooked up via gigabit. Everything is SOOO fast. When I wake up my MBP from sleep, it takes less than a second to jump on the network.Also, you can plug in a USB hub, and throw multiple HDs or even printers! When you're transferring files (either Mac to Mac or Mac to External HD), you should really stick with FireWire. While the cables are a few extra bucks, compared to USB cables, the sustained throughput of FireWire (vs USB) is definitely worth it. USB 2.0 might be 480mbps, but it's a short spike, and actually drops a lot, as you continue sending data. Plus, there other devices (my scanner, printer, and externals all have FireWire ports) and if you have a friend who has a MacBook/Pro and needs to transfer a file quickly, that extra FireWire cable will be handy

Read Test:
5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0
Write Test:
5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

The "wake from sleep" works as advertised. I actually woke up before the alarm (I was nervous my MBP wouldn't actually wake up! lol) but my MBP spun up and starting playing classical music.

Easy wake (gradually increases volume over a specified range... no jarring, "BEEP BEEP BEEP!" - Instead, I woke up to Schubert and Smetana...haha)
Apple Remote compatible - click Pause to snooze for a 8 (or whatever you specify) minutes right from bed.
Can wake your computer up from sleep! (I haven't tested this feature yet - gonna try tonight)
Resides in Menu Bar (no Dock icon)

invest in an external drive and use time machine. that way if it happens again you can just restore your drive like nothing happened.
As bad as this sounds, i still don't have an external set up for Time Machine!

I had a problem with my battery a few weeks ago, and my hard drive completely failed on Sunday. I had to bring in my macbook to the apple store and they replaced my battery and hard drive free of charge. Thank god for that 3 year warranty.
They had to restore my hard drive and I lost photobooth, garage band, iphoto, imovie and all those programs...Is there a way of getting those programs back? or am I supposed to pay to get for them??
Those are probably on the DVDs that were included with your MacBook. If you pop in the "Mac OS X Install" DVD, you'll probably see an icon for "Install Bundled Software Only"
If not, I'd take it back to the store and explain the situation. I've read other people had similar issues and they installed iLife right then and there...

Depending on your external drive and the "symptoms" you have (if it's doing a "double clicking", your drive is bad...otherwise, it's probably the directory structure...) you may be able to rescue the data using Disk Warrior.

Apple has Disk Utility, which attempts to repair directory issues, but I've never had Disk Utility actually repair anything... Disk Warrior, on the other hand, has worked wonders for me.

Converting video files for your iPod -- I recommend Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) -- It's free! Has presets (Windows --> Presets Drawer) so you don't have to fuss around with the settings. Very easy to use.
