JA not having enough confidence to attract DH at this point can be due to four scenarios:

    1. She does not find herself pretty, and thus lacks self-confidence that she can attract DH

    2. She knows she is pretty, but due to DH being righteous and thus having strong will-power to resist temptations, she doubts she can attract DH

    3. She knows she is pretty, but DH might not find her as such, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder

    4. She knows she is pretty, but her family, social, and educational background might be a hindrance for DH to like her

I thought your questions for a while.

My opinion is that Ji-An was prepared to bring scandal to Dong Hoon by seducing him in the beginning.

But I don't think she would think she is so pretty herself. Maybe she is just young and can attract some "Ahjussi".

When Dong-hoon was reluctant to have dinner with Ji-an, she was actually a bit surprised that this "Ahjussi" seemed different from others.

At the end of episode 8, we can tell that she really doesn't have a high opinion of herself, that is the reason she said “which man would be crazy enough to fall for a woman like me?”

She also acted confused about DJY's plan to ask her to date Dong-hoon, and stupidly asked, "What should I do?  Should I take off my clothes and jump on him?"

This is one of the few times that Ji-An showed her ignorance about an area.

All in all, I think she thinks she's just not ugly, but not necessarily pretty. And feels that she doesn't really have any real attraction to Dong-hoon.

That's why she was so shocked by the line —— “when he has dinner and drinks with you, he must like you" - it turns out that Ahjussi might have fallen for her.

It seems like many Korean people also ask about this question, so he answer this.

For us, if we apply The Death of the Author, then yes, they have divorced.
But for the other audience, his words mean DH and YH are not yet divorced, "maybe" in the future.
So I say he does not dare to confirm this fact too obviously.

The reason why JA never called Dong Hoon after going to Busan was because Dong Hoon's married status caused her not to do so.
Then at the end, Ji An invited Dong Hoon for dinner and said she would call him, showing that she had gotten a positive signal by Ahjussi holding her hand and not letting go.

So for me, it wasn't really necessary for the director to say himself if Dong-hoon is divorced or not.

I have another idea is that, KH finally going back to doing movies = DH finally restarts his new relationship(with LJA).
Because in EP5, what that both faces can match these two.
(KH faces his failure in the movie industry, and DH faces his failure in the relationship.)
And before the ending, they are both in an unsuitable environment of them.
(KH becomes a cleaning worker, and YH is not suitable for DH.)
DH had already started his new business, after all.
So my take on this equivalent is like this.

Ohh makes sense! The synchronization could indeed be on KH’s career and on DH’s love life. Great catch!!  :partyblob:

    spacer.png

Actually,KH was writing something in the autumn, 2018. I guess it was a script. And it was not success so he ripped it off.

This whole KH plot is full of various metaphors, but I'm not quite sure what exactly is being referred to.

For DH to realize that JA had heard all of his confrontations with DJY and with YH, and that she knew about the affair the entire time, made him even more grateful that she stuck by his side even "after hearing my miserable life." He was already feeling grateful that she was by his side, but after the awful revelation that she REALLY knew how miserable his life was, he was even more grateful in the shack.

And after all these, DH talked to the phone let JA call him. PDU let DH make a fake conversation to let JA appear. DH refused and said he had a good relationship with JA.

At that time, PDU also made a eye-rolling.

I think this eye-rolling was also very funny.  Maybe PDU thought that 'DH...So you are an ordinary man too....'

Very good point!! JA never told DH she knew! The closest thing JA did was to point out to DH about the phone booth in ep 5.

That now gives a different color to JA’s various love confession scenes in ep 10 and in ep 12 at the train. JA knew about the affair, so she might have a notion that things could be headed for a divorce for DH and YH. But for DH, JA didn’t know. He thought his façade of being in a happy marriage was also what JA is seeing. Now that gave me a fresh view of the “crazy bi***” remark and the hit on JA in ep 10. It’s like DH saying “How dare you say that to me, or worse shout it out to the entire neighborhood, when you know I’m a happily married man!?”

I was also surprised by some of DH's behavior when I first watched this show. Why did he react so much to JA's confession? Then I remembered on my second viewing that he didn't know that JA already knew about YH's cheating.

I think in episode 14 when DH knew about JA's wiretapping, he must have thought about what  A exactly  about him. And when he  found  that JA had already known about YH's cheating, he must have understood why JA had been pursuing him.

The only other time I laugh at Ji An is in Ep 10, when she's waiting for DH to give him slippers, and she's listening to DH make his way home. He tells Sang Hoon that he hopes no one stands in front of him so he can remain seated all the way home. Then JA hears him tell someone to please sit down...and she gives a little eye roll. It's subtle but so cute. It's like she knew it, but she can't fault him for being kind. But she wishes he would take care of himself.

I think this eye-roll also meant "that pathetic fool" which she told to YH.

JA was like the more mature one, while YR was like a naive girl.....

I can't help but imagine how funny it will be when they become sisters-in-law......

I mean, because it seems KDL will fall in love with the girl who already has a boyfriend, so......

KDL was repeating Chief Seo's words in EP13 and making fun of him, not saying he likes LJA.  And in this scene we can learn that all DH's subordinates knew LJA likes DH. So in the end DH invited JA to his company also a signal that he was divorced. If not , he would never invite JA to a place that everybody knew she likes him.

The little flaw I felt is that DJY being a very perceptive and intelligent man, when he already perceived JA to be truly liking DH in that scene, why did he still trust her with his plans? JA liking DH should have already been a huge red flag for him.  My guess is that with time running out, DJY might have thought it would be too late in the game for any drastic change in plans. Also, he did hire that photographer to also tail DH and JA as a backup plan

The reason DJY wanted to listen to the recording of JA's confession was because he heard that DH hit JA.  He knew DH so well that it is very uncommon. Why would DH hit a girl ?  Unless he likes the girl and won't let others know it.  So DJY thought it was really a progress.

    A new idea

YR faced a new director during the shooting of her new movie, but had the exact same encounter ——being bullied by the director .

As a comparison, I feel as if JA goes to a new company and still encounters the same workplace problems as well. It's true that she can actively make new friends there, but that doesn't mean that company is a paradise. Maybe the care from the top of the company will make her feel better, but her dubious background may still be questioned by her direct supervisor.

It's only after many comparisons that she'll feel even more strongly about how rare a good person her Ahjussi is.

I know - it seriously drove me so bonkers!!! But as several of you have mentioned before, if there was nothing romantic there, it would have been easier for them to stay in touch comfortably (like DH and Jung Hee). It's like why did DH avoid Jung Hee's bar when Ji An was staying there? It's in that same realm.

Now I get it —— In this way, the PDnim wanted to emphasize that their feelings for each other were ambiguous love, not friendship. People in ambiguous relationships will be hesitant to contact, while friends will not. And the green light on a warm spring day at the end of the show symbolizes that their relationship can be made public.

recently discussed with @Thomas Zhang and have an idea that the screenwriter has already used the comparisons to show you that DH and YH will divorce.

SH and AR vs. DH and YH is the most important one.
The situations of these two groups in EP1 and in EP16 are completely reversed.

    Nice!

This inspired me that the state of a couple would be going to divorce or not is totally different.

These two couples must be another contrast.

I have seen many couples who have been fighting for decades, some may mention the divorce, but in the end it did not.

Other couples who seemed to be very much in love got divorced suddenly.

Only afterwards did their friends learn that they had long ignored each other.

And I think the dilemma with DH and YH's marriage is that DH would never initiate a divorce, and YH is a relatively decent middle-class woman who can't initiate a divorce when she's made a mistake and DH is not (which is why she's indifferent to DH possibly losing his job, because it's a good excuse to initiate a divorce).

And there seems to be a post here that mentioned that in Korea the cheating one can't file for divorce.

So that's one of the points I made earlier, that it's really very out of character for DH to initiate a divorce and then to stay together with JA. It was impossible for DH to do these things. He even would not make any promise to JA.
So DH & JA must be separated and get reunited later.  (But why don't you contact each other, why?why?why?  Just to show us that how JA missed her Ahjussi by a sign language lesson???)

And  YH eventually went public with her cheating and defended JA allowed her to finally be in a position where she could get DH to accept the divorce.

But I am curious why when DJY suggests that she date PDH, she becomes negative and thinks PDH won't love her?
Then why has she had the confidence that the scandal would success at first?

After the EP10 confession, DJY urged JA to do something effectively. JA said that she would try to sleep with DH. Then, we all see that DJY raised a doubt ——“will he sleep with you?”

JA knew that DJY won't believe a positive anwser. She did not believe that herself. So she only talked about the method by pouring wine and drugging.

Actually every role who was familar with DH thought that JA was not the one that DH would be interested in.

The board of SAMAN all thought JA was a "low-end woman" for DH. That's why PDU was not quite sure firstly if JA was sent by DJY to frame up DH.

Another interesting thing is, DH and JA like each other but they also think that they did not deserve each other.

@YukawaCattle I noticed the moon showed up three times as well, but I wasn't sure how to see if it lined up with the dates the show gave us in writing.  It was too complicated for me.

    I will check it later.

Maybe use lunar calendar can find something.

(I hope KWS will keep staying such detail.)

About the specific timeline of the play, here are a few pictures for your reference.

    spacer.png

EP1. The whiteboard in the lower left corner reads January 15.   JA took out her grandma from nursing house at a weekend. It was the same time that DH's niece get married and YH went out with JY. After these weekend scenes,DH started to climb and almost fall from the building.

    spacer.png

EP1. When the bribe was given to DH, JA was typing the invoice records. The date shown here was January 20. Then the day of the incident would have been January 21.

    spacer.png

EP10. The date when JA paid off all the money was February 21. Then the fight should have happened on February 20. Two days later, on February 23, Grandma was admitted to the new nursing home

Maybe we don't have to think too much about the exact time as the reality of 2018. Because the 2018 Lunar New Year is February 12. This is also an important holiday for Koreans, but we don't see the corresponding scenes in the drama at all.

I heard there are "extra" scenes in the Director's Cut of the show that weren't aired during the live showing - can you tell us what some of them are? You also got the script, right? So fun. I'm glad the show did that for its fans.

My video. One of the extra scenes as an Easter Egg at the end of the drama.

I translated it from English subtitle to Chinese.

Everything JA said in this scene was a metaphor for how much she missed her Ahjussi.

I see nothing's wrong if DJY surpassing PDH in office. Perhaps DJY is more capable and he is more capable if not how could he being promote. What is unacceptable is the thing that he sleeps with PDH's wife.

Traditionally, East Asian societies have always considered older people to be privileged over younger people.

what I don’t understand from PDH’s wife is, if she needs to have a new relationship to make her happy and complete then why she did not ask for divorce?

Maybe she was waiting for an excuse to ask for divorce.  DH was transferred from Design Group to Security Check Group last year, which means that his career was finished. She definitely knew that and didn't do anything to stop it.

When DH was fired and failed to start his own business and went bankrupt like his elder brother, she would definitely file for divorce.

I guess it helped that Ji An was still very disheveled in the first few episodes.

Comparing the image of Yura and Jian together in episode 15, Yura does look like a mature woman, while Jian is very much like a little girl. Considering that Kwon Nara is only two years older than IU .....

    1. Park Dong Hoon

Nice observation! Yes, DH is passive in many aspects of his life and that includes his career. I think that is one aspect of his story arc that might or might not be addressed in future episodes.

Park Dong Hoon is like the typical family good boy in East Asian society. All of his actions come from his family's expectations, not his own will, so he lives a miserable life. I was exactly the same as him until I was 32  , so I can understand him very well.

According to AR's word at the promotion party, Park Dong Hoon was good-looking, had good grades, and had good athletic ability. So this person is actually very proud inside and has some sense of superiority. He is really better suited to start his own business rather than holding back in a big company, especially considering the state of the Korean workplace.

Another I’ve also read somewhere (sorry, can’t recall where) is that JA’s lines of “Thank you for meeting me. Let’s meet again” is a symbol of her relationship with DH and is a foreshadowing of their separation and eventual reunion.

You reminded me that there is a kind of symbolic link between Dong-hoon and Ji-an's grandmother in terms of roles. “Dear moon ”is obviously a song about Ji-an's love for Dong-hoon. But this song always comes up in the grandmother scene. I have to think a little more about the symbolism.
