  1. 12 episodes in; this show is really bad. I don't even mind the cheap props since I'm used to a lot of budget historical dramas like that, but the directing of the show is horrendous. Sometimes, it's far too zoomed in and we can't see the action properly or the cut is just so jarring everwhere.

The chemistry between the main leads is also non existent. NON EXISTENT. They just love to gloomily stare at each other all day long and even in the flashbacks there was no attraction. The female lead is so depressing to watch and there's just a lack of vitality to her character. The writing for their relationship is so forced. They like each other just because the writer says so.

CGI is bad, but that's a given. Most chinese dramas are like that.

Despite Chinese netizens slamming it left and right, it's viewcounts are actually doing pretty good, likely top 3 for tencent when it finishes airing, probably top 5 across all platforms? It's way less than what everyone is expecting (which is another JoL, which is about 3 times SSS in viewcounts I think, real rough estimate), but considering the absymal initial feedback, the completely misdirected promotion, somewhat slow pacing, I'm surprised it's doing fine.

That's the issue with casting the same lead in a similar role I think. His acting doesn't differ too much either so it'll be hard to distinguish this with his breakout role.

  3. I think I realized what my problem with Jiang Ni is. It's the actress' acting. Her character portrayal lacks what all the other females have in that era/time period. There's a lack of grace and elegance in her posture and in her speech. Even maids have that distinct bearing. Maids of XFN, the big sister's maid, women of lower class positions during that time still had that sort of graceful movements. But Jiang Ni's speech is so modern and brash. Her movements are so jerky and not smooth. It's very jarring to see how different her acting is from other females in the drama. Very out of place.

  4. Okay ... episode 15 and on is so darn boring now.

The problem with this show is that it treats its audience like children. They explain EVERYTHING to us. Oh how smart XFN is, oh how his actions are calculated. Yeah yeah we get it. It's so tiring after the first time. They even use other characters as a pretext of explaining.

For example, the Jiangnan Prince in Qingzhou explaining things to his brash son about the ploys, the steps, the traps. That was clearly for us to watch lol.

  5. So far:

After watching 8 episodes, I have to say I really enjoy the cinematography. I know people have said the action scenes are far too overdone with the slow motion; but I feel it really captures the movements of humans. Far too often, modern historical dramas always have too much CGI or zooming shots, but here we can see the way the body moves in a fight which is nice.

Most importantly, it's filmed like a damn painting. Especially Crystal Zhang's scenes. With her billowing white sleeves and the way the two strips of silk on her hat flies in the wind. Ooooooh man just like those paintings.

I like the subtlety of the relationships. It's not plain, dumb writing where people are immediately attracted to each other or falling over for one and other. Everyone feels like their own person. I really wish there were more productions like this, but then again, those romantic wuxia ones are usually aimed at a different audience anyways.

The cast is amazing! I know people complain that their favorite actors should be the lead or someone should have more screentime. But the thing is, with such amazing supporting cast, the quality of the show is apparent. Going from main role to support doesn't mean a bad career choice, if anything they can show off their versatility in acting.

Problem with the show  is I feel it overdoes this space and Game stuff, Like maybe keep it low. Reba was there for legit 7 minutes in a 70 minute 2 episodes this time. I mean I get the real story adaptation, it does become annoying. It did this time.

They adapted it so that Reba isn't the main character of this show. The main couple is forefront. Since we got a lot of Reba in the first half, now we will get YY in the next few episodes. Then they will go back to having equal screen time as an established couple in the last third of the show and we get cute couple fluff!

I think haven't such clear arcs are good considering a lot of other shows are all over the place. Especially those where people write extra lines and whole story plots for specific actors or actresses because of investment. Pillow Book's JiHeng in Reba's previous drama for example ( I know the actress had the rights though, just as an example ).

Besides, with China's emphasis on aerospace development, they might approve shows a whole lot faster if they butter up the government's successs. Less censorship and all. It isn't unheard of for the government to target shows after they air to make them censor even more after certain things receive public attention. Overtly lewd lines or territory maps with Taiwan/HK etc.

  7. I can see how affected Yu Tu was by what everyone around him was saying in Episode 18 during the phone call. It's not just money, it's time as well. Before in the hospital, Guan Zai's wife was lamenting how her husband could never spend time with her. How she always had to make excuses up for her son to explain why his dad is not around. Then the Lao Hu's wife (the elderly couple) was also reminiscing about her husband's abscence in her youth. His own mother was sick and he couldn't take enough leave to be with her. It's hard. Even though people told him that's not how love is calculated/counted, it really is when it gets to the point of divorce. If you keep fighting and fighting and crying over it. Luckily ... JJ is a celebrity who doesn't have a lot of free time herself. But if his love interest was a normal worker like Xia Qing his ex... then naturally the differences would result in fights. That's why he and JJ are a match!!! Hohohoho

It's nice the show is addressing how couples may have differences due to work life though. Adulting can be so tiring....

some viewers complained about jingjing's screen time but actually if you read the novel you will understand the novel is about yutu's story from jingjing's perspective. yangyang is the best choice for yutu. can't think about another actor for this position. he and reba are really nailed their character.

After the confession and rejection, the story follows Yu Tu and how he realizes that she's worth fighting for. Of course it's important to see his own growth otherwise it would be pretty boring to just have Jing Jing's side of view and have him suddenly pop up and confess to her. After all the pain he put her through we need to see him suffer!

  9. In Episode 16, I think Xia Qing (the ex) tried to win him back after lamenting to her friend in the bar that she can't let him go. But after she implied that Jing Jing's rise to fame in the entertainment industry was because of ... dirty/sexual favours, Yu Tu completely rejected and shut her down. I think what annoyed me most about that scene was how a capable, high wage earner like her could say that Jing Jing slept her way to the top just to push her character down in front of Yu Tu. There was zero need for that. It's not as if this doesn't happen in the corporate world either; for the sake of promotions and whatnot. Before this she was also taking shots at Jing Jing saying how her grades in school sucked. Then Yu Tu defended Jing JIng saying she graduated from University.

I think Yu Tu himself knew that Xia Qing was deliberately saying this to him to make him feel that Jing Jing isn't suited to be his girlfriend.

It was completely underhanded. Yet Xia Qing acted righteously after Yu Tu rejected her. She made it seem like he didn't have to worry about money anymore since he's with a celebrity so he can return to his low wage job in the aerospace industry.

She was pretty hypocritical and disgusting at the bar with her friend too. We knew she broke up with Yu Tu because of his low income, long houred job. She said she felt unfair that she had to take on financial burden with housing and kids etc (whatever happened to equality that women wanted???). If anything, the strong, mature woman was her friend. She was so DONE with Xia Qing always mooning over Yu Tu.

  10. Man ... I can't believe they cut out an entire dance portion in Episode 36 and filled it with their manhua drawing instead. It was fine before when using as transitions as it looked really pretty. But when they started to use it for entire segments like the battlefield ... it really interrupts the flow of the story. Quite jarring too since it happend after several episodes of absence.

Oh him, no, he shot it due to the pressure of proving himself not being CG’s side so as to not implicate his family, and that’s why she doesn’t like him essentially. To her, that was a great betrayal, as much as she understood why he did it, it created a crack that could never be healed

I thought he shot her because he saw the other guy take his bow and arrow out. And he knew he would shoot to kill. So WSY was probably hoping to shoot her just on her arm to help her escape certain death.

  12. It's subbed up to 24 on dramacool or other sites. Youtube is just slower since it has the official one I think. HD too.

    Spoiler

Up to there, getting really annoyed with CG at the way she disregards everything to save that General. Pretty much sacrificed everyone else and dragged them all down. She is totally responsible for the death of his mom. Completely tunnel minded and selfish.

Buuut ... this is good because that means her character can have development and growth.

  13. I think it was implied in the manga that her mother chose to marry the brother because he was the crown prince, so there was more security in that marriage? Or she could get a better position? But that may have been one perspective, because there were scenes where showed she was more interested in the second Prince; blushing and being shy around him. It's possible she was violated and forced into marriage but who knows.

Oh does anyone know what the deal is with the controversy with the author? Back then, she stopped publishing because of copyright or something so the manga was never finished. What's the whole story behind that?

Now with a heavy heart I should metiontion some personal "cons". I am very, very dissappointed with the male lead Leo Wu. Since the drama started I've read some info re the actor, and it is my understanding he is considered to be some kind of wunderkind in the film industry, but it seems may be it would be harder for him to transfer to adult roles. I feel a bit sorry for Dilraba, because seems like she is doing all the "connection" and "chemistry" stuff for herself and her partner. However, I should admit, they look ok next to each other, so looking forward to the next episodes (to be ,hopefully, proved wrong).

I think the reason why I find it hard to believe his acting is because of how young he looks and the way his body is built. He is pretty small! Slim and thin! Having read the manhua before, he just doesn't fit the character he's portraying. I wished they had a taller, buffer dude playing. Luckily ... he isn't babyfaced. It would be so much worse if he had an idol face or something. He has cheekbones at the very least.

  15. I'm glad for the actors themselves. GJ and ZZH's acting are a lot more diverse and expressive here than in their other historical works. GJ in Unique Lady was a bit hard to watch and ZZH in Legend of Yun Xi was just one expression lol. I get that it's part of the character but it's still an ice block face XD.

At least with this new work on their resume they can perhaps nail bigger projects! All the best to their acting career!
