Choi Si Won Is One Funny Con Man In 'My Fellow Citizens'

With his quirky, comic facial expressions and model good looks, Choi Si Won creates a very persuasive con man character.

Chronologically Choi Si Won is an actor who sings, rather than an idol who acts. The talented singer, songwriter and dancer appeared in the dramas Precious Family, Eighteen: Twenty Nine, and Spring Waltz, before he debuted as a member of the k-pop band Super Junior. Yet it took more than a decade for k-drama viewers to recognize just how funny the actor could be.

There’s no longer any doubt about the actor’s comedic skills, given his last few successful dramas and his current role as a third-generation con man in My Fellow Citizens.

Although Choi’s character, Yang Jung Kook, is committed to a life of crime, as a lucrative family tradition, he somehow winds up marrying a police officer. It only works because neither spouse knows what the other spouse actually does during the day. Choi’s fictional wife, played by Lee Yoo Young, thinks he’s a businessman, working in his family’s business, which is almost true. He thinks she has a desk job and doesn’t pursue criminals, which is almost true. He doesn’t know she worked as a detective in the violent crimes unit, but asked for a transfer when she heard men don’t date female detectives.

 

The desk job is too boring so she secretly transfers again, but this time she transfers to the police department her husband fears the most, the one dedicated to catching white collar criminals. Conflict is inevitable, but that might not be a bad thing. While she may eventually have to handcuff him, keeping secrets has not been good for their marriage.

My Fellow Citizens is the third in a series of standout comedy roles for Choi. His natural comedic flair won praise in She’s Pretty, which co-starred Park Seo Joon and Hwang Jung Eum. In that comedy he played a fashion magazine editor who falls for Hwang Jung Eum’s unique charms when no one else recognizes them. He takes one look at her white socks, worn with black shoes, thinks she’s purposely channeling Michael Jackson’s unique style, and decides to call her “Jackson.” For many viewers, his portrayal of the easygoing, eccentric editor was a breakout performance.

According to Korea’s Joongang Daily, it was the role that established him as an actor rather than an idol-actor, even though he was technically an actor first. In an interview with Joongang Daily, Choi Si Won said that his previous roles limited him and in order to break free from such limitations, he explored comical characters. It was a smart move.

After She’s Pretty, he enlisted for his two-year mandatory military duty, which is required of all able-bodied Korean males between the ages of 18 and 35. After his release in 2017, the actor promptly appeared in the drama Revolutionary Love, playing an unemployed third-generation heir, who develops some revolutionary ideas because of his love for a hardworking young woman, played by Kang So Ra. His “revolutionary” ideas about treating workers equitably do not appeal to his fictional moneyed family. The drama was popular not only because it mirrored the struggles and aspirations of many young Koreans, but much of the appeal was due to Choi’s self-deprecating performance as an entitled heir. In real-life, Choi comes from a well-to-do family, but he has supported himself since being discovered by a talent agent at the age of 16.

Choi also did a brief comic turn in the English language production Dramaworld, financed by the online video streaming site, Viki.com. Dramaworld laughingly played up all the tropes that exist in dramas. In his brief appearance, Choi is hit by a car and in a classic K-drama trope, wakes up to fall-in-love-at-first-sight with the heroine before being whisked out of the plot. With just a few of his signature facial expressions, he makes a lasting impression.

Choi might not limit himself to comedy roles in the future, but he’s created some memorable comic characters, including one very funny con man in My Fellow Citizens.

Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, EXID’s Hani, Lee Yeon Hee, Lee Dong Hwi, And More Confirmed For MBC’s Sci-Fi Crossover Project “SF8”

 

The cast of “SF8” has been confirmed!

 

On April 1, MBC revealed a star-studded lineup of actors that have signed on for the film/drama crossover project.

 

Set in the near future, “SF8” tells the story of people who dream of a perfect society through technological advancements. This project is a Korean original sci-fi anthology series about an array of subjects including artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robots, gaming, fantasy, horror, superpowers, and disasters.

 

The eight Directors Guild of Korea (DGK) directors participating in this project include Kim Eui Deok, Roh Deok, Min Kyu Dong, Ahn Gooc Jin, Oh Ki Hwan, Lee Yoon Jung, Jang Cheol Soo, and Han Ka Ram. Each director will present a 40-minute project for “SF8.”

Uee and Super Junior’s Choi Siwon will star in director Oh Ki Hwan’s romantic comedy “Augmented Infatuation” (literal title), which takes place in a world where virtual reality is commonplace.

 

“SF8” will start filming and premiere the director’s cut in July via wavve before airing two original series at a time for four weeks in August.

Choi Siwon and Uee to star in new MBC project

 

Casting has been confirmed for actors Uee (My Only One) and Choi Siwon (My Fellow Citizens) in a new MBC rom-com, called Augmented Bean Pod.

 

Choi Siwon stars in the drama as Min-joon, a character who enjoys virtual reality dating as a pastime and struggles with finding genuine love in real life. Enter Uee, playing the role of Ji-won, who meets Choi’s character through a virtual reality app. Naturally the two fall in love and, as their feelings grow, they try to navigate their relationship from the virtual platform into reality.

 

Directed by film director Oh Ki-hwan (Fashion King, The Art of Seduction), the drama is one of eight single-episode features in a sci-fi anthology series called the SF8 Project. In a collaboration between MBC, the Directors Guild of Korea, and Wavve (a streaming platform), each story will be produced by a different director. All stories will follow the same theme: imagining a future in which human society has become further entwined with advanced technology.

The director’s cut of Augmented Bean Pod and the SF8 series is set to be released in July, through Wavve, and the original standard version premieres on MBC in August.

Super Junior's Siwon is featuring on the upcoming variety show 'Yacht Expedition' alongside Jin Goo, Jang Ki Ha, and Song Ho Joon.

MBC's 'Yacht Expedition' is a documentary variety program that'll follow the 4 men as they go sailing on a yacht in the Pacific Ocean for 21 days. Viewers are curious how Siwon, Jin Goo, Jang Ki Ha, and Song Ho Joon will work together as they're not known for appearing often on variety shows.

Siwon is said to have taken a lot of time to prepare and get close to his fellow cast members, Jin Goo formerly served in the navy, Jang Ki Ha is known to travel nature sites, and Song Ho Joon was the first person to launch a self-built, privately owned satellite.

Jin Goo, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, And More Confirmed For New Variety Program

Jin Goo, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, Jang Ki Ha, and Song Ho Jun have been cast in a new variety show!

Launched by MBC every1 and titled “Yacht Expedition” (literal translation), the show is a “documentary variety program” about four men who take on the challenge of sailing a yacht in the Pacific Ocean for 21 days.

 

The cast is composed of actor Jin Goo, actor and singer Choi Siwon, singer Jang Ki Ha, and writer Song Ho Jun. These artists are not known for regularly appearing on variety programs, making their participation in the show more intriguing.

Each brings their own set of skills to the unique format of the program. Jin Goo, who rose to fame for his role in “Descendants of the Sun,” was formerly in the navy. Choi Siwon was reported by the production staff to have spent a large amount of time and effort in preparing and getting to know the other members. Jang Ki Ha has a taste for natural exploration and has visited sites like the Joshua Tree Desert and the Alps. Song Ho Jun was the first person in the world to launch a self-built, privately owned satellite into orbit.

“Yacht Expedition” is scheduled to premiere sometime in early August.
