2015031301201_0.jpg

Actress Bae Doo-na officially broke up with her British actor boyfriend Jim Sturgess.

Bae's agency on Thursday admitted the split but said it did not know the timing and reason as this was strictly a personal matter.

Bae and Sturgess were co-stars in the 2012 film "Cloud Atlas." Rumors of their relationship first surfaced in February 2013 on U.S. media, but they neither denied nor acknowledged their relationship until May 2014 during the Cannes International Film Festival.

Bae was in Cannes as a starring actress for "A Girl at My Door" featured in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, and Sturgess made a surprise visit to the event to give support. In an interview with Korean media, Bae introduced Sturgess as her boyfriend.

Bae is currently in Paris for Louis Vuitton's 2015-16 F/W fashion show. Her latest work, an American sci-fi series "Sense8," will be streamed on Netflix in June.

K-Drama Actors Who Would Ace An English Exam/BY Julie Jones | KDramaStars.com
Ko Ah Sung plays Seo Bom in the drama "Heard It Through The Grapevine." Because Seo Bom comes from a poor family she surprises her wealthy in-laws with her mastery of English. When her character had to read the pages of a difficult English book, her command of the language also surprised many k-drama fans.
The 23-year-old actress does have a gift for languages but she perfected her English when she played Song Kang Ho's daughter in the Bong Joon Ho film "Snowpiercer." The film had an international cast with many English-speaking characters. Playing Yona, a girl who grew up hearing many different languages spoken, she said she had to tailor her English in that film.
"Yona can speak little bit of every language existing on the train," said Ko in an interview with tenasia. "So I spoke with an accent that was a mix of the Philippines, India, the United States and other places. People in Korea complemented me on my English pronunciation, but it would sound funny to a native speaker."
Another k-drama actor known for his fluency in English is Im Si Wan. He took The English proficiency TOEIC exam shortly after he wrapped up his role in the hit drama "Misaeng." His exam score was 820 out of 990, which he was very happy about. He only hoped to reach a score of 800.
Being able to speak English fluently is key to landing Hollywood roles. Some actors who improved their English skills enough to make the transition are Lee Byung Hun, Kim Yunjin and Bae Doona.
Lee Byung Hun has had several roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as "Red 2" and can soon be seen in "Terminator Genysis." Yunjin Kim currently appears in the TV series "Mistresses" and played a pivotal character in the hit television show "Lost." Bae Doona has appeared in several Wachowski productions, including the film "Cloud Atlas."
Being fluent in English is no guarantee that an actor will land an English-speaking role.  2PM's Ok Taecyeon is another actor whose English is commendable, which is not surprising since he attended high school in the U.S. The singer-actor appeared in "Dream High," "Who Are You?" and earned praise for his performance in the weekend drama "Wonderful Days." But despite having language skills he has yet to interest any Hollywood producers.
Krystal Jung, the star of "My Lovely Girl" is also fluent in English but that's because she was born in San Francisco. The actress and f(x) singer was discovered by a talent agency on a family trip back to Korea.
English language skills also come in handy when a drama is set partly in the U.S., as was the case in "The Heirs," which Krystal played a role in.

'Blind Massage' takes top honour at Macau's 9th Asian Film AwardsChinese drama takes best film prize while local director Ann Hui wins for 'The Golden Era'
Vivienne Chow in MacauSouth China Morning Post

Best actress winner Bae Doo-na (left) with best director Ann Hui and best actor Liao Fan at the Asian Film Awards.
Chinese drama Blind Massage took top honours at the Asian Film Awards last night, beating out The Golden Era and Berlin International Film Festival Golden Bear winner Black Coal, Thin Ice for best film.
Blind Massage, a drama directed by Lou Ye that explores the world of sight-impaired masseurs, also won the best cinematography award.
While Hong Kong director Ann Hui On-wah's The Golden Era, a biopic of Chinese author Xiao Hong, led the nomination race with five, it went home with two awards: best director for Hui and best supporting actor for Wang Zhiwen's portrayal of Chinese writer Lu Xun.
"Half of this award should go to my scriptwriter [Li Qiang]," said Hui, who received a lifetime achievement award at the 2012 event.
Although noir thriller Black Coal, Thin Ice missed out on the best film award, director and writer Diao Yinan snagged the best screenwriter prize. The film's lead, Chinese actor Liao Fan, took the best actor award, as he did at the Berlinale.
But the night's biggest winner was more of a surprise. Chinese director Jiang Wen's film Gone With The Bullets, though panned by critics, scored three awards - best visual effects, best production designer and best costume designer for William Chang Suk-ping's flamboyant costumes.
The trilingual ceremony - in Cantonese, English and Putonghua - took place at the Venetian Macao casino's theatre. Forty-two films from eight regions in Asia were selected from out of 1,000 eligible works to compete for 14 awards. "It was a tough decision," said Hong Kong director Mabel Cheung Yuen-ting, who served as the awards' jury president this year.
Korean actress Bae Doo-na, who played a police academy instructor struggling to settle into a small town after being transferred from Seoul in the drama A Girl At My Door, beat Japanese actress Miyazawa Rie and Chinese leading ladies Zhao Wei, Gong Li and Tang Wei, to take home the best actress award. "I really didn't expect this," Bae said.

class="at_ttl"Nine Times K-Drama Stars Played Police Officers

BY Julie Jones | Mar 27, 2015 10:41 AM EDT

Trends definitely exist in the careers of k-drama characters and this year is looking to be a good one for police officers.

With Kim Bum considering a role as a gifted detective in the tvN drama "Hide Your Identity" and Kim Sun Ah probably taking the role of a tough chief of detectives in "Masked Investigator," it's a good time to look back at some exceptional k-drama police roles and the actors who looked good in their uniforms.

4.     Bae Doona won an award for playing a small town police officer investigating child abuse in the film "Girl At My Door."

class="at_ttl"Bae Doona Wins Best Actress Award

BY Julie Jones | Mar 30, 2015 01:21 PM EDT

Bae Doona

On March 25 Bae Doona received the Best Actress Award at the Ninth Asian Film Awards, which took place in Macau. The 35-year-old actress won the award for her work in the film "Girl At My Door," also known as "Do Hee Ya." Bae is only the third Korean actress to win the award.

In the film, Bae plays Inspector Lee Young Nam. Lee meets a teenaged girl named Do Hee, who is being abused by members of her family. Having been demoted at a previous position and thus transferred to the quiet town, Inspector Lee should be wary of making waves but ultimately finds that she must do the right thing.

Before being honored at the Asian Film Awards, Bae Doona's performance earned the actress a Best Actress award at Korea's Chunsa Film Art Awards and Best Actress in a Foreign Film Awards at China's Hundred Flowers and Golden Rooster Awards.

Bae seemed surprised when her name was announced, then expressed her gratitude.

"I'm grateful for getting this honor," she said. "I will keep working hard regardless of borders and locations."

So far, borders have not limited Bae Doona's career. She is one of the few Korean actresses to have become an international star. She has appeared in Korean films and dramas, Japanese films and American films and a drama.

She played an activist's girlfriend in Park Chan Wook's 2002 film "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance," an archer in Bong Joon Ho's 2006 horror film "The Host" and an inflatable sex doll in the 2009 Japanese film 2009.

That last role led to her being cast as a clone in the Wachowski's 2012 film "Cloud Atlas." She worked on two other projects with the Hollywood producers, a film titled "Jupiter Ascending" and a series titled "Sense 8."

Although Bae Doona worked on a Korean film after her last Hollywood film, she has not appeared in a k-drama since 2010 when she had roles in "Master of Study" and "How To Meet A Perfect Neighbor."

Bae competed for the Best Actress award with actresses Gong Li, Kalki Koechlin, Rie Miyazawa, Tang Wei and Zhao Wei.

The Korean actresses who previously won Best Actress Awards were Jeon Do Yeon in 2008 for the film "Secret Sunshine" and Kim Hye Ja in 2010 for the film "Mother."

Altogether 16 Korean film industry professionals were nominated in 14 categories at the film awards. Bae Doona also presented the Best Newcomer Prize to Zang Huiwen for her performance in the film "Coming Home."

'A Girl at My Door' gets 7 Wildflower Awards nominations
By Jason Bechervaise The Korea Times16-03(242).jpg
The second Wildflower Awards Ceremony will take place at Literature House, central Seoul on April 9. / Courtesy of The Wildflower Film Awards Korea
Now in its second year, the Wildflower Film Awards Korea recognizes the achievements in the local independent film industry. Headed by Director of the awards Darcy Paquet, a Korean film specialist, along with film critic Oh Dong-jin who serves as the Organizing Director, the nominations were announced at a press conference on March 26 at the Press center in Gwanghamun, Seoul.
In an interview with The Korea Times, Paquet talks about why he started orchestrating the awards. "In recent years, a new film industry has grown up parallel to the mainstream commercial film industry. There is so much talent and creativity in the independent film sector, that it seemed to me they deserved their own awards ceremony."
"We're much smaller and more informal than the other awards ceremonies in Korea, but we have a somewhat more idealistic approach" Paquet continued.
The name "Wildflower Film Awards" is meant to symbolize the creative fertility and diversity of the independent film sector, which grows and thrives despite difficulties in funding and distribution where the local industry is dominated by vertically-integrated studios.
"Interestingly, the general public is becoming a bit more aware of independent films, thanks to breakout hits like Han Gong-ju, The King of Jogkuand My Love, Don't Cross That River. A positive image of independent films is starting to take form in the minds of the general public."
There are ten awards in total: the Grand Prize, Best Director - Narrative Films, Best Director - Documentaries, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best New Director, Best New Actor, Best New Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
The Grand Prize is chosen among the 14 nominees for Best Director - Narrative Films and Best Director - Documentaries. To be eligible, films must have a budget of under 1 billion won (approx. $900,000) and have been released between January 1 and December 31, 2014.
"There were more than 60 narrative features and close to 30 documentaries released in theaters last year. There were impressive films from both veteran directors like Hong Sang-soo and Zhang Lu, and very talented newcomers."
"At a time when many mainstream Korean films are becoming more formulaic, independent films showed tremendous creativity, energy and diversity" Paquet added.
This year's nominations reflect a strong twelve months for independent cinema in 2014. July Jung's layered social drama "A Girl at My Door" which was in invited to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last year received the most nominations with seven: Best Director Narrative, two Best Actress nominations for Bae Doo-na and Kim Sae-ron, Best Actor for Song Sae-byuk, Best New Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
"Han Gong-ju" directed by Lee Su-jin which went on to win numerous awards at festivals around the globe took five: Best Director Narrative, Best Actress for Chun Woo-hee, Best New Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
Also popular with audiences, Woo Moon-gi's "The King of Jokgu" about the sport of Jokgu a hybrid of football/soccer and volleyball of sorts - received five nominations while the renowned auteur Hong Sangsoo's "Hill of Freedom", Lee Yong-seung's workplace drama "10 Minutes" and Zhang Lu's offbeat romantic comedy "Gyeongju" each bagged four nominations.
Noting the strength of the documentaries last year, "right now there is tremendous creative energy in Korean documentaries. Some films help us to understand political issues in more depth, like "Non-Fiction Diary" (directed by Jung Yoonsuk) and "The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol" (directed by Lee Sang-ho and Ahn Hae-ryong).
"Some films help us to understand life better, such as The Hospice (directed by Lee Chang-jae) which is about dying, or the documentaries My Place (directed by Park Moon-chil) and My Father's Emails (directed by Hong Jae-hui) which are about family" said Paquet.
The directors behind these films along with Kelvin Kyung Kun Park ("A Dream of Iron") and Park Chan-kyong ("Manshin") were all nominated for Best Director in the documentary section.
In terms of how the voting was conducted for the nominations and the actual awards Paquet explained, "we established a selection committee of about 25 people -- including both critics and devoted fans of independent cinema -- who watched independent films all year long and then selected the nominations through voting."
"For the final awards, we had another round of voting by the selection committee plus a number of invited critics and programmers."
For such awards to take place, it needs to have the support of the local industry. "I feel tremendously grateful for the support we've received from the local film industry. Many producers and directors in the mainstream film industry have made significant financial donations, and without their support these awards wouldn't have been possible" Paquet said.
"Luckily for us, many people believe strongly in the need for an awards ceremony of this type."
The awards will be announced at a special ceremony on April 9 at Literature House, Seoul. Nominees and leading figures in the Korean film community will be invited to attend.
Prizewinners will each receive a specially designed ceramic trophy from Konkuk University professor Harin Lee, a well-known figure in Korea's ceramic arts community.
A book, the first volume of a bilingual Wildflower Film Awards Annual has also been published with essays and interviews on eleven selected films, and contains specially commissioned illustrations by local artists.
Meanwhile, six of the nominated films will be screened from April 6 to 8 at Seoul Theater, and will feature Q&A sessions with nominated directors and actors.
More details will be made available on its website: www.wildflower-awards.com.
