Hooray! A new movie! And she's hooked herself up w/ OMG, Odagiri Joe <3

The plot sounds really gripping! From what I have seen, Kim Ki Duk's films always really make you think, I truly can't wait to see how LNY is going to develop in this film.

If all else fails, we are set up for major eye candy ^______^

Gosh, 2 beautiful people on one screen? It's gonna be hard to take, lol. I'm super excited about this. I saw Joe Odagiri's picture a while ago and thought that he was really, well, hot, for the lack of a better word. So now I'm curious about him. As for the lovely Lee Na Young, I don't doubt that she could pull of pretty much any role. What I'm really anticipating, tho, is the chemistry between her and JO. Ah, I'm itching with excitement!

ETA: Here's the article about the movie on Dramabeans:

Famed director Kim Ki Duk casts his newest film

Jan 2nd, 2008 by javabeans

Top Korean actress Lee Na Young is teaming up with top Japanese actor Joe Odagiri in a Kim Ki Duk film. Indie lovers rejoice!

(Although Kim Ki Duk is entirely underrated in his own native country, at least he’s gained much-deserved recognition outside of Korea as a premier arthouse director as the force behind such films as Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring, 3 Iron, Samaritan Girl, and The Coast Guard.)

The film, Bi-mong, draws an unusual love story between a man believing dreams to be reality (Odagiri) and a woman who experiences (suffers from?) sleepwalking (Lee). She encounters the man’s dreams in her reality, and wanders among his dreams as a mysterious figure.

This will be Lee Na Young’s first project back after a year’s absence following her 2006 film Our Happy Time, aka Maundy Thursday, which also starred Kang Dong Won.

The article doesn’t give an indication of the language issue — does Joe Odagiri speak Korean? But then again, 3 Iron proved that Kim Ki Duk can work wonders without any words at all.

Korean actress Lee Na-young, Japanese actor Jo Odagiri

Award-winning director Kim Ki-duk chose Japanese actor Jo Odagiri and Korean actress Lee Na-young for his 15th movie "Bimong (Sad Dream).''

"Bimong,'' produced by Kim Ki-duk Film and Sponge Ent, is about two people who are connected by dreams. Jin (played by Jo Odagiri) is a guy who dreams because he cannot forget his ex-girlfriend. Ran (Lee Na-young) sleepwalks in accordance with Jin's dream. They meet at a traffic accident scene where Ran behaves consistently with Jin's dream.

Kim is known for his distinctive experimental cinematic works. He received Best Director awards in 2004 at two film festivals, for two of his films. At the Berlin International Film Festival, he won an award for "Samaria'' (2004) while at the Venice Film Festival he took one for "3-Iron'' (2004). However, some of his movies are controversial due to their depiction of the abuse of women and animal cruelty.

Odagiri, 31, is a Japanese actor who studied acting in California State University. Debuting in the drama "Kamen Rider Kuuga'' (2000), Odagiri made a name for himself as a star in Korea through the movie "House of Himiko'' (2005) and "Tokyo Tower'' (2007).

Prominent actress Lee, 28, is said to have brought a new look to the Korean film industry. She won the Best Actress award at the 25th Blue Dragon Film Awards for her role in "Someone Special'' (2004). Her last appearance was in the movie "Maundy Thursday'' (2006). Lee played the character of a suicidal young woman who regularly visits a convicted murderer awaiting execution.

The movie started filming Jan. 4 in Seoul and is to be completed by the end of this month. The director, Kim, is famous for his low budget films and short shooting periods. It will be released in May.

Top Stars Join KIM Ki-duk’s 15th Feature

Controversial director KIM Ki-duk has cast South Korean leading actress LEE Na-young alongside one of Japan’s top actors, Joe Odagiri, in what will be his 15th feature film. Titled “Bi-mong” (Sad Dream), the new project began shooting January 4 in Seoul and is scheduled to wrap on January 25.

Much interest is being given the new project as actress LEE is one of Korea’s most adored stars, taking memorable roles in such films as Maundy Thursday (2006) and Someone Special (2004). Paired with Odagiri (Tokyo Tower (2007)), a favorite with women across Asia, the film carries much commercial potential despite the generally cold reception KIM’s films receive in his home country.

The new film will, as in many of KIM’s previous works, distort the boundaries between reality and dream. The story revolves around a man (Odagiri) who dreams that he caused a car accident. Waking, he goes to the place where the dream occurred, only to find that an actual hit-and-run accident has occurred, and that the police have traced it to a woman (LEE) with a sleepwalking disorder.

Director KIM has an impressive body of work, including last year’s Cannes screener Breath starring Taiwanese star Chen Chang, Time (2006), Samarian Girl (2004), Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring (2003) and Address Unknown (2001). His latest film is produced by Kim Ki-duk Film and Sponge Entertainment and is slated for a May release.

Showbox fulfills 'Dream'

Distrib picks up rights to Kim film

By DARCY PAQUET

SEOUL – Showbox has picked up int'l sales rights to high profile auteur Kim Ki-duk's upcoming movie, "Dream" (Bi-mong.) The Seoul-based distributor and investorwill open it for business at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

Company has the pic for all territories outside Japan, where investor Stylejam has the rights, and Korea, where local distribber Sponge is producer.

In Kim's typically highspeed lensing style, pic cranked up in the first week of the month and wrapped Jan 23. Sponge has set a Spring release date, and pic is skedded to be ready for possible Cannes selection.

"Dream" features Japanese star Joe Odagiri, who enjoys a huge fan-base in Korea thanks to word-of-mouth indie hits "Maison de Himiko" and "Sway," and heavyweight Korean actress Lee Na-young ("Maundy Thursday.") The somewhat experimental film -- Kim's 15th as helmer -- sees lead couple speaking in two different languages, but understanding each other's words. Story revolves around a man who dreams of his former lover and comes across a woman who appears to act out his imaginings.

Showbox, which since last year is no longer linked to the Megabox exhibition chain, will also be pre-selling new titles "Sunny," a $7m drama by "The King and the Clown" helmer Lee Joon-ik, and erotic comedy "A Tale of Legendary Libido." Its titles completed and screening in Berlin include romantic drama "Love Exposure" and tearjerker "My 11th Mother."

KIM Ki-duk’s Dream to go to European Film Market

2007043010423239590_1.jpg

[photo=starnews]

Korea’s Showbox, a film investment, distribution and sales company has picked up international sales rights to KIM Ki-duk’s 15th feature film Dream. The company will take the film and a handful of other titles to the European Film Market which runs alongside the Berlinale February 7 – 17.

KIM’s Dream cranked out January 23 after a 3-week shoot in Seoul. The film is generating much buzz due to its high-caliber casting of top Korean actress LEE Na-young and male sensation Joe Odagiri from Japan. As with previous works, it will explore themes of dream, memory, love and the mystery of communication. In a bold experiment the film will have the lead couple speaking in two different languages yet understanding each other words.

Showbox holds sales rights on Dream for all territories outside Korea and Japan, where local distributor-exhibitor Sponge Entertainment and Japanese investor Stylejam own rights respectively. Sponge is set to release the film this Spring with a final cut ready in time for consideration at the 61st Cannes festival, this May.

KIM, whose Samaria won him a Berlin Silver Bear award in 2004, will not be absent from the program this year. A film he wrote and executively produced has been selected to screen in the Panorama section of the Berlinale. Beautiful, the feature debut of KIM’s assistant director, JUHN Jai-hong tells the story of a woman who is persecuted because of her beauty. Both Dream and Beautiful were produced through KIM’s production company, Kim Ki-duk Film.

[special Report] Is there a limit to the stars' guarantees?

Recently, the Minister of Culture and Arts, Yoo In-Chun's private property was revealed to be over 14 billion-won. Some said that he had gained too much wealth, but he thinks otherwise. He said, "These are all from my 30 years of acting career. Some may think I have too much private wealth, but look at Bae Yong-joon".

How much would the stars be paid? Recently, the guarantees of the Korean Waves stars' moved to around 50 million-won (~$US 50,000) for every drama episodes. The following article investigated the skyrocketing increases in the stars' guarantees.

At this very moment, the guarantees in the film industry remained relatively constant since 2005~2006. Even though, the stars get paid few billion-wons for every film, it's relatively slow increase compare to the geometric progression in the guarantees of the Korean Waves stars.

On top of that, as the Korean film industry had few downturns and the reduction in the production fees came about, some sensible actors reduced their guarantees to ease the situation. For example, the top star, Cha Seung-won halved his guarantee when he appeared in "A Day with My Son" last year; and Kim Hye-soo asked much lower than her usual standard in "Eleventh Mom". Lately Lee Na-young reduced her guarantee in the Director Kim Ki-duk's low-profit film, "Bi Mong" and Park Eun-hye appeared in the Director Hong Sang-soo's "Night and Day" without any payments.

The experts say this practice of finding the 'sensible amount of performance fee' between the stars and the production crew will continue for sometime.

However, the fierce competition between the stars for the highest guarantee still continues. Because their guarantee is directly linked to the star's power and influences. And furthermore, it is an indicator of their popularity and a source of their pride.

htm_200802250859380107000001070100-001.jpg

According to the experts, the guarantees of the 'A+' movie top stars are around 0.5 billion (~$US 500,000) to 0.55 billion-won (~$US 550,000). This standard had not changed since 2006, which had the peaked success in the Korean film industry.

The 'A+' category includes top actors such as Song Kang-ho and Seol Kyeong-gu. These actors worth their high guarantees because they have high naming values as well as making a strong appeal to the audiences. The Korean Waves stars such as Lee Byeong-Heon, Jang Dong-gun, Bae Yong-joon and Jung Woo-sung, also receives around 0.5 billion-won and are categorised as the 'A+' group. They may not receive as much, in terms of the actual amount of the guarantees, but they possess a great potential in success in the overseas countries and other additional business, which make them the no.1 choice by many film directors. This group includes Cha Seung-won, Jeong Joon-ho, Hwang Jeong-min and Lee Jeong-jae. In particular, Hwang Jeong-min had the most rapid increase in his guarantee ever since the hit of "You are my Sunshine" in 2005.

The next category includes stars such as Kwon Sang-woo, Song Seung-heon, Jo Seung-woo and Baek Yoon-sik, who receive around 0.4 billion-won (~$US 400,000). Kwon Sang-woo and Song Seung-heon have not yet proved their power in the film industry but they are at the top ranks as the popular Korean Waves stars. Both received 0.4 billion-won guarantee in their upcoming film, "Destiny", which is due release next month.

Among the female actors, Lee Young-ae, Kim Hye-soo, Jeon Do-yeon, Jang Jin-yeong, Jeon Ji-hyeon and Ha Ji-won are at the top of the list, whose guarantees are around 0.4 billion-won (~$US 400,000). The guarantees of other top female stars, like Kim Jeong-eun, Choi Ji-woo and Song Hye-kyo is around 0.35 0.4 billion-won (~$US 350,000 - ~$US 400,000). Kim Jeong-eun and Choi Ji-woo once were the highest-paying actresses, but as their films had low success, their guarantees have dropped a little.
