Evil isn't really the right word for Sasuke's actions/decisions. Besides it's necessarily for Sasuke to do so to reach Itachi.

If Sasuke was truely evil, Naruto would have been dead at the end of their epic battle already. I think Neji got it right when he said that right now Sasuke is in darkness...
