(Movie Review) 'Switch' presents relatable family comedy set in fantasy world

SEOUL, Dec. 20 (Yonhap) -- "Switch" is a fantasy comedy film where the identities of a top actor and his manager are swapped on Christmas Day, worth watching for light entertainment with the right amount of humor and sweetness.

Directed by Ma Dae-yoon, the movie follows a familiar storyline and uses cliches seen in Hollywood family movies, but you may be surprised at how much joy you get out of it.

 

"Switch" revolves around top actor Park Gang (Kwon Sang-woo), whose life turns upside down after his identity is switched with his manager, Jo Yoon (Oh Jung-se), on Christmas.

 

 

Park has it all but feels empty and can't sleep well at night.

 

His manager Jo is a down-to-earth family man of two children, who struggles to make ends meet with his tough job.

 

After receiving the best actor award on Christmas Eve, Park drinks with Jo and gets into a cab, where a mysterious driver asks him, "Are you happy now? What if you could choose a different life?"

 

The next morning, he wakes up in a small house where his first love, Su-hyun (played by Lee Min-jung), now his wife, and two children are hollering on a chaotic Christmas. Instead of his sports car, a mini car beeps.

 

Of course, Park at first denies his new identity but growingly adapts to his new life: an unknown actor in TV shows and theatrical plays.

 

Meanwhile, his former manager Jo transforms into an A-list actor who lives in a big house and drives a luxurious sports car.

 

The movie follows a similar plot as "Family Man" (2000), starring Nicolas Cage, in which an investment banker gets a chance to live a different life on Christmas by a taxi driver and wakes up the next morning as a suburban dad who married his college sweetheart and had two children.

 

"Switch" adds layer to the structure by blending the identity-swapping plot between two opposite characters, who show strong chemistry and creative moments.

 

The leading protagonist Kwon, who has appeared in several comedy films and drama series, does his old trick and creates a relatable character in a good ensemble with Lee, who acts as a lovable, dedicated wife.

 

The 46-year-old with two children in real life once again plays a middle-aged man grappling with harsh reality, similar to his role in the recent comedy drama series "Desperate Mr. X."

 

Oh daftly executes giggle-provoking scenes without being too cheesy. Though the 45-year-old acts in similar settings and clothing as his co-star in his alternate life, he looks and feels different from Kwon, and is fun in his own way.

 

Despite its sitcom-style comedy, the movie does a thoughtful job of asking the important question: "What makes you truly happy in your life?"

 

"Switch" will hit local theaters Jan. 4.

*** On the afternoon of Dec 19th, a press conference for the movie “Switch” was held at Lotte Cinema attented by its Director, actors Kwon Sang Woo, Oh Jung Se and Lee Min Jung. During the interview, Kwon Sang Woo said, “It’s fun to play a top star. I added a few excessive details, but those don’t affect the story. What if I’m a 100, but I cannot show my good sides?There will be moments when you can’t control your anger because you’re human. There are times when I laugh as well. For example, I think I was like my character because I was annoyed when the van was too cold. There were stories that I could relate to. What I felt after watching the movie was that I should be better to my family and make my family happy. I hope it’s a movie where other breadwinners of the family can watch and think that they should do well to their families. I have also been working with the same manager since I got married. To be able to do a work like this is not from an actor’s power only.”  He explained that actors can do better works only when they trust each other, and bond with each other like family. In addition, he said, “It’s not only for actors but also for singers. Watching this movie makes me think of many things. I’m grateful to the manager I’m working with. I liked the movie because I felt grateful to all the family members, managers, and everyone around me.”

Kwon Sang Woo commented on his impressions of working together as a couple with Lee Min Jung, “There are kissing scenes. Even if it’s acting, it can’t be comfortable. From my point of view, (Lee Byung Hun) will praise Lee Min Jung for choosing a movie well. I’m curious.”  While Lee Min Jung said, “My ideal type is a man with small eyes. So I thought we would go well together. I was told that the movie suits me well, so I felt good."

*** I've watched the movie, “Love, Again”. It opens up with a lavish affair that is soon revealed to be the exact opposite of the union of two people as husband and wife, the wedding. Hyun-woo (Kwon Sang-woo) and Sun-young (Lee Jung-hyun) are getting divorced in public way. And who would have thought that a divorce story could turn out to be quite an entertaining premise? But, “Love, Again” manages to pull the premise off. Things get even more complicated when Sang-chul (Lee Jong-hyuk) — an old schoolmate of Hyun-woo’s — saves Sun-young after an accident. This is a movie that isn’t shy about the complications that arise after a married couple gets a divorce. “Love, Again” has its moments of rom-com tropes. That said, not all are awkward, and some are pretty well-done. I love this movie because it’s not-too-melodramatic.

*** Kwon Sang-woo discussed his experiences with the film, "Switch" in a recent interview. Despite the common of the body swap premise, Kwon Sang-woo said he thought the screenplay was intriguing because the body swap takes place between an actor and his manager. He also said that Oh Jung-se had signed up for the project before he did. He noted that this was the first project from writer/director Ma Dae-yun. He said that Ma Dae-yun said to him, quite sincerely, that the role was actually written with him in mind. He said he had no regrets about trying to make the movie fun. "Switch" has earned 276,103 admissions through January 11th, its eighth day of availability at the South Korean box office. He will next appear in the feature film "We Grow Up" and the television drama "Hangang" later this year.
