SEOUL, Aug. 9 (Yonhap) -- The first trial of actor Ha Jung-woo (real name Kim Sung-hoon), who has been charged for illegal use of propofol, will be held this week, according to the legal profession Monday.

Ha, for violating the law on drug management, will be brought to the Seoul Central District Court on the 10th. As it is a formal trial, Ha, as the defendant, must attend the court himself.

The defendant was summarily indicted with a fine of 10 million KRW over illegal use of propofol, a psychotropic drug, from January to September 2019, but was handed over to formal trial based on the court's judgment.

In a summary indictment, the prosecution can ask the court to issue a summary order only with a written hearing and without a formal trial for relatively light cases. But if the court considers the case inappropriate for a summary order, it can be handed over to trial for a hearing.

"I have been receiving dermatologic treatment for acne scars, and for laser treatments that can cause pain I have been treated under sleep anesthesia," explained Ha.

Prosecution seeks 10 mln-won fine for actor Ha Jung-woo over illegal propofol use

김나영 / 2021-08-10 14:25:47

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors on Tuesday demanded a 10 million-won (US$8,700) fine for actor Ha Jung-woo, who admitted to illegal use of propofol in 2019.

The 43-year-old screen star has been indicted on charges of taking shots of the anesthesia-inducing medication for non-medical purposes between January and September in 2019.

The prosecution requested the Seoul Central District Court impose a monetary penalty as the actor has no previous record of drug abuse and admitted to his crime.

Earlier in the hearing, Ha's attorney said the actor admits to all the allegations and asked the court to take into consideration that Ha mostly took propofol shots administered by doctors, along with dermatology treatments.

Ha said he "deeply regrets" his actions and will try to become an actor that "contributes to society."

The actor has starred in a number of hit movies, including "The Chaser" (2008) and "The Handmaiden" (2016).(END)

Ha Jung Woo Admits to Illegal Usages of Propofol; Prosecution Seeks $8,700 Fine

by krishkim

Ha Jung Woo was accused of administering propofol for other than therapeutic purposes. Today, the actor admitted all charges in court.

At the first trial held today, Ha’s lawyer shared, “The accused admits to all the charges. But please take into account the fact that most of the crimes were done along with the medical procedure and that they were administered by medical personnel.”

The trial was concluded because Ha did not contend with the charges. The prosecution sought a fine of 10 million KRW (about $8,700) in consideration of the fact that Ha had no history of drug use.

In the final statement, Ha said, “I deeply regret and deeply reflect on how careless I was. I bow my head and deeply apologize for causing concern and damage to my colleagues and family because of my mistake.”

“I am very embarrassed, but I will become a healthier actor that contributes to society. And I will live more carefully, so I don’t ever have to stand here again,” he continued. “I ask the judge for mercy so that I can make up for all my mistakes and pay off the debt.”

The lawyer added, “The defendant admits to all the crimes and is deeply reflecting on it. Please consider the fact that he is sincerely apologetic for his careless judgment.” Ha’s other lawyer said, “Since this case has hit the wire, he (Ha Jung Woo) has suffered financial damages because he can’t promote as an actor. If a sentence that exceeds the fine is sentenced, it will cause a major setback in the production of his upcoming dramas and movies.”

An additional court hearing session is scheduled to take place on September 14th.

Actor Ha Jung-woo fined 30 mln won for illegal propofol use

김나영 / 2021-09-14 15:41:36

▲ South Korean actor Ha Jung-woo walks into the Seoul Central District Court on Sept. 14, 2021, to attend a sentencing hearing on his drug abuse charges. (Yonhap)

SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- Actor Ha Jung-woo was fined 30 million won (US$25,600) Tuesday for illegal use of propofol in 2019.

The Seoul Central District Court ordered the 43-year-old screen star to pay a fine of 30 million won and forfeiture of 88,749 won for violating the Narcotics Control Act. The sentence was heavier than the 10 million-won fine sought by the prosecution.

Prosecutors had pressed a summary indictment against Ha on charges of taking shots of the anesthesia-inducing medication for non-medical purposes between January and September in 2019, but the court put him to a formal trial. A summary indictment is a measure taken on minor crimes in which an accused can be exempt from a trial with court approval.

The actor admitted to all the charges against him and asked for leniency during the first court hearing last month.

Delivering the ruling, the court said that the accused colluded with his doctor to fabricate his medical records to cover up illicit drug use.

"Ha's responsibility is heavier as he is a popular actor," the court said.

But it does not seem like Ha visited the hospital only to receive propofol injections or has drug dependence, the court added, noting that it also took into consideration that he deeply regrets his action and has no previous criminal record.

After the court ruling, Ha said he accepts the decision and will try to live a "more responsible and healthy life."

The actor has starred in a number of films, including "The Chaser" (2008), "The Handmaiden" (2016) and the 2017-18 smash hit series "Along With the Gods." (END)

Actor Ha Jung Woo was fined 30 million KRW (about $25,610) for the illegal use of propofol. He will accept the court’s decision without appeal.

On the 14th, Seoul Central District Court delivered a first-trial sentence on Ha’s charge of illegal propofol administration. The court sentenced him to a fine of $25,610 and charged an additional fee of 88,749 KRW (about $75.75).

Last month, the prosecution sought a fine of 10 million KRW (about $8,700). However, the judge sentenced him to a fine three times the amount. He pointed out, “He committed a crime as an actor loved by the public, which makes his responsibility for a crime bigger.”

He continued, “Considering the frequency, it is difficult to conclude that he had built a propofol dependence. I’ve also taken into account the fact that he had no criminal history.”

The actor stood in front of the reporters and calmly commented, “I humbly accept the results of the sentence. I want to say I’m sorry.” Ha admitted all of his charges at the final hearing. In the final statement, Ha said, “I deeply regret and deeply reflect on how careless I was. I bow my head and deeply apologize for causing concern and damage to my colleagues and family because of my mistake.”

Meanwhile, Ha was accused of habitually administering propofol 19 times from January to September 2019 at a plastic surgery clinic in Seoul.

The Next Wave: Netflix Unveils Korean Lineup for 2022

By Don Kang [VP, Content (Korea)] | January 18, 2022

From the iconic jumpsuits of Squid Game to the supernatural beings of Hellbound, Korean shows dominated global popular culture in 2021, and we have the numbers to prove it.

Overall, global viewing hours of our Korean shows grew six-fold last year, compared to 2019. To date, Squid Game is the biggest show we have ever launched, reigning as the most viewed Netflix show in 94 countries at its peak. In fact, 95% of Squid Game’s viewership came from outside Korea, and many of these viewers went on to explore other Korean content.

Two months after Squid Game, we launched Hellbound, whose premiere clocked 43.48 million viewing hours. Hellbound was among the Top 10 Netflix shows in 93 countries, and ranked number one in 34 countries. Sci-fi mystery The Silent Sea also made it to the number one spot on the weekly non-English Top 10 lists for its premiere.

Credit for this growing global interest goes to the talented Korean creators we have been working with for the past few years. From 2016 to 2021, we launched more than 130 Korean titles. As a result, Netflix has become a compelling destination for fans of Korean content, who know that this is the home of diverse and high-quality Korean storytelling.

As this fanbase increasingly includes viewers from all over the world, we are excited to continue collaborating with Korean storytellers to bring the K-wave to new heights.

To do that, we always ask ourselves: what are the kinds of stories that only Netflix can help these creators tell? You’ll find the answers in the more than 25 compelling Korean shows we are launching this year — our largest number to date.

Zombie apocalypses and kinky office rom-coms are just the beginning of what's in store for K-dramas on Netflix in 2022. There’s one and more for everyone no matter your taste, so set your reminders—what will you be watching?

Showbox unveils 27 upcoming Korean films, TV shows

Buoyed by the success of Korean cultural content, Showbox, one of the country's largest film production and distribution companies, has unveiled its plans to premiere 27 new films and TV dramas in the latter half of this year.

The company, which has been at the forefront of the Korean film industry for 20 years, also promised to provide solid support for filmmakers to create compelling and entertaining content.

"Last year, 'Squid Game' and 'Hellbound' proved inventive and gripping Korean storytelling that can cater to global audiences successfully. We will continue to invest in Korea's creative filmmakers and, together, we will keep on developing our original intellectual property (IP) into 'super IP,'" Showbox CEO Kim Do-soo said during a press conference held at Seoul Dragon City in Seoul, Wednesday.

Super IP refers to IP that can be expanded into other formats, for example a movie that can be transformed into a drama, game, webtoon or web novel while maintaining the original storyline and concept.

Starting this year, the film production company is bringing in 27 Korean films and dramas, expanding its library of K-content.

First on the list is "Emergency Declaration," which will premiere in August. The film, which was invited to last year's Cannes Film Festival, centers on a commercial airline that faces a lethal virus outbreak on one of its planes, which forces the pilot and passengers to take unconventional emergency measures.

Then there is plastic surgery-themed comedy drama, "Apgujeong Report," which stars Ma Dong-seok, also known by his English name Don Lee, and Jung Kyung-ho, and "Citizen Deok-hee," about a voice phishing victim who takes revenge on scammers.

"One of the most-anticipated films is 'Kidnapped,' starring actors Ha Jung-woo and Ju Ji-hoon. It will finish filming in August and be released next summer. Among the upcoming films and shows, I also recommend director Jang Jae-hyun's new occult film 'Pamyo' (working title), starring Choi Min-sik," Kim said.

The company has been pushing lately for content production mergers and acquisitions to survive in the fast-changing environment of the global content market.  In April, Showbox received an investment from U.S. investment firm Maum Capital Group as part of its efforts to push for M&As. The two will jointly develop metaverse and non-fungible token businesses in the U.S.

Established in 2002, Showbox has developed several record-breaking hits, such as "Taegukgi" (2004), "The Host" (2006), "The Thieves" (2012), "Assassination" (2015) and "Taxi Driver" (2017), each recording over 10 million ticket sales. In 2020, it made a foray into the TV drama industry with JTBC's "Itaewon Class."

Korea’s Showbox unveils global K-content expansion plans

BY JEAN NOH | 15 JUNE 2022

In South Korea, major investor-distributor Showbox has announced plans to increase its global competitiveness with a new infusion of capital and a creator-centred business model for K-contents.

At a media event in Seoul on June 15, Showbox CEO Do Soo Kim revealed the company had received an investment of $108.4m (KW140bn) from Silicon Valley-based Maum Capital Group (MCG) in April and plans to use it to expand its platform value chains to metaverse and NFTs.

Kim said the company is focusing on partnering with creators to develop intellectual properties (IP) that can be expanded to multiple formats – for example, films that can be adapted into series, games, webtoons (aka online comics) and/or web novels.

He unveiled 27 of their more than 40 IP in development and production, including A Hard Day and Tunnel director Kim Seong-hun’s Kidnapped (working title), starring Ha Jung-woo and Ju Ji-hoon. Based on a true hostage crisis story in 1980s Beirut, the film is set to wrap production in August, aiming for a summer 2023 release.

Showbox is also readying the pandemic-delayed release of last year’s Cannes title Emergency Declaration for this August. The film’s director Han Jae-rim is working on a new film for the company: based on a popular webtoon set in 1935 Japanese-occupied Seoul, the story deals with a series of mysterious incidents surrounding a woman.

Longlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize, Love In The Big City, written by Sang Young Park, will see a story from it adapted into a film by Lee Eon-hee (Missing) at Showbox as well.

In addition to Korean remakes of Chinese, Japanese and Spanish content in the works, the company is also set to produce documentary/reality series such as Another Record 2, directed by Rotterdam-awarded Yoon Dan-bi (Moving On), and whisky travelogue Angel’s Share, directed by Kim Jong-kwan (The Table).

Showbox has been behind five of the 26 films in South Korean box office history that surpassed the local landmark record of 10 million admissions: Taegukgi (2004), The Host (2006), The Thieves (2012), Assassination (2015) and Taxi Driver (2017).

A new Netflix original series, "Narco-Saints," created by top director Yoon Jong-bin, will be released on Sept. 9, the streaming service platform said, Monday.

The much-anticipated series is about a man who has no choice but to take on a secret mission for the National Intelligence Service (NIS) after being framed by a Korean drug lord operating in Suriname.

It has drawn attention since the production was announced last year, as it is helmed by Yoon, who has been recognized for excellence in storytelling and direction in previous films, including "Nameless Gangster: Rules of Time" (2011) and "The Spy Gone North" (2018).

Its star-studded cast also raises expectations, especially because some of the actors have already proven to be good partners with director Yoon.

Ha Jung-woo plays the role of Kang In-su, an entrepreneur who wished to make money in Suriname but gets involved in drug crime. Ha partnered with Yoon since the latter's directoral debut, "The Unforgiven" (2005), through which both Ha and Yoon received recognition in the nation's cinema scene. Ha also starred in Yoon's other works: "The Moonlight of Seoul" (2008), "Nameless Gangster: Rules of Time" and "KUNDO: Age of the Rampant" (2014).

Another A-lister in the new series is Hwang Jung-min, who also appeared in "A Violent Prosecutor," (2015) for which Yoon was a producer and "The Spy Gone North" for which Yoon was the director. In the new series, he plays the role of Jeon Yo-hwan, the top boss of a Suriname's drug cartel.

Park Hae-soo, who is nicknamed a "worker at Netflix" because his recent filmography centers on Netflix series such as "Squid Game" (2021) and "Money Heist: Korea ― Joint Economic Area" (2022), takes the role of Choi Chang-ho, an NIS agent who leads the mission to apprehend Jeon.

Yoo Yeon-seok plays David Park, a lawyer who helps protect Jeon's organization, while Jo Woo-jin is transformed into Byun Ki-tae, who is Jeon's right-hand man.

Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, who has strong international foothold with his appearance in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000), "The Grandmaster" (2013) and "Dune" (2021), will guest-star as the leader of a Chinese crime ring in Suriname.

Ha Jung Woo, Hwang Jung Min, Park Hae Soo, Jo Woo Jin, and Yoo Yeon Seok revealed why they chose to star in Netflix’s Narco-Saints.

Narco-Saints follows a civilian businessman who becomes involved in the National Intelligence Service’s covert operation to bring down a Korean drug lord operating in the South American country of Suriname.

The upcoming series came to be on Netflix with Ha Jung Woo’s proposal to director Yoon Jong Bin as he got fascinated by the gripping story of a civilian entrepreneur starting his business in Suriname. The director and The Spy Gone North writer Kwon Seong Hwi reportedly worked hand in hand together to come up with its script. Ha Jung Woo shared his first impression of the script, saying, “The story hooked me from the beginning as the characters were so alive and unique.”

Playing drug lord Jeon Yo Han in the upcoming series, Hwang Jung Min gushed, “Every episode left me wondering what would happen next. The script is just incredibly well-written.” Park Hae Soo, who stars as NIS agent Choi Chang Ho, added, “I love how characters play mind tricks on each other in this series. I think viewers will have fun guessing what will happen next.”

Jo Woo Jin, who takes on the role of the second-in-command of the drug ring, commented, “I thought I’ve worked with some of the cast members from this series, but I realized that I haven’t worked with any of them. We were dying to meet each other in person, and the brilliant cast was one reason I hopped on this project.”

Yoo Yeon Seok, who plays the legal advisor of Yo Han, remarked, “This is my first time working with director Yoon. I felt extremely thrilled to work with all of the actors starring in the series.”
Narco-Saints will drop on September 9th.

South Korea’s highest-grossing actors come together for the first time in new trailer for ‘Narco-Saints’

By Grace Kim | August 11, 2022

Ha Jung-woo and Hwang Jung-min lead the star-studded cast featured in the new teaser trailer for the upcoming Korean crime-thriller drama “Narco-Saints.” The series also stars Park Hae-soo in his third Netflix original following “Squid Game” and “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.”

“Narco-Saints” — previously titled “Suriname” and "The Accidental Narco” before the latest was finalized — is based on the real-life events of a civilian entrepreneur who has no choice but to go undercover in a government operation to catch a powerful drug lord who has taken control of Suriname.

Ha Jung-woo takes on the role of Kang In-gu, the entrepreneur who seeks out a profitable venture in Suriname only to find himself involved in a drug smuggling operation. Hwang Jung-min stars opposite Ha as the drug lord Jeon Yo-hwan, who stays under the radar as a pastor.

The two are some of South Korea’s highest-grossing movie stars, whose projects are said to guarantee box office success. While “Narco-Saints” is the first time Ha and Hwang are joining forces, they’ve previously worked individually alongside the show’s renowned director Yoon Jong-bin in his hit movies “Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time” and “The Spy Gone North,” respectively.

Yoon is breaking new grounds for this upcoming series, having only directed films in the past. It is also his first time collaborating with Netflix.

“Narco-Saints” also stars Park Hae-soo as Choi Chang-ho, a National Intelligence Service agent who recruits Kang In-gu into the operation to catch Jeon Yo-hwan. Jo Woo-jin takes on the role of Jeon Yo-hwan’s right-hand man Byun Ki-Tae, while Yoo Yeon-seok plays the cartel’s lawyer David Park.

The series will be available for streaming on Netflix on Sept. 9.

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming star-studded Korean drama “Narco-Saints."

Directed by Yoon Jong-bin, the crime-thriller is led by two of South Korea’s highest-grossing movie stars: Ha Jung-woo and Hwang Jung-min. The two are working together for the first time for the series but have individually worked with the director in his hit movies “Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time” and “The Spy Gone North,” respectively.

In “Narco-Saints,” Kang In-gu (Ha) is an entrepreneur who gets himself unwittingly involved in a drug smuggling operation while seeking out a business opportunity in Suriname and ends up being framed by the area’s powerful drug lord, Jeon Yo-hwan (Hwang).

“Narco-Saints” also sees the return of Park Hae-soo to Netflix after starring in the hit shows “Squid Game” and “Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area.” Park takes on the role of Choi Chang-ho, a National Intelligence Service agent who ropes Kang into a government operation to catch Jeon just as he’s about to begin his prison sentence.

Yoo Yeon-seok (“Hospital Playlist”), Jo Woo-jin ("Alienoid," "Happiness") and Taiwanese actor Chang Chen (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) round out the supporting cast.

Director Yoon shared, “While writing the script, I thought it was like a kind of mafia game. It will be exciting to see characters with two different sides.”

The new trailer provides a glimpse into the series’ intense action sequences, leaving viewers on edge as the voice of Jeon is heard asking Kang: “Do we still have the goal in mind?”

“Narco-Saints” will be released on Netflix on Sept. 9. Check out the official trailer below:

Netflix recently dropped a new trailer for Narco-Saints starring Ha Jung Woo, Hwang Jung Min, Park Hae Soo, Jo Woo Jin and Yoo Yeon Seok.

Narco-Saints follows a civilian businessman who becomes involved in the National Intelligence Service’s covert operation to bring down a Korean drug lord operating in the South American country of Suriname.

The trailer begins with Kang In Goo (played by Ha Jung Woo) starting a business in Suriname in the hope of getting rich. However, he ends up being falsely accused of smuggling drugs when bags of cocaine were found loaded on his ship.

While serving his time in prison, a NIS agent named Choi Chang Ho (Park Hae Soo) visits him and tells him the shocking truth that he has been framed by a South Korean pastor named Jeon Yo Hwan (Hwang Jung Min). The agent then asks In Goo if he could help him take down the pastor, and In Goo takes the offer to reduce his prison sentence and clear his name. Upon accepting the mission, he returns to Suriname as an under-cover agent of NIS.

Paster Jeon Yo Han, who is backed by the Suriname government, once again threatens him, but this time, In Goo does not give in as he knows that this is his last chance. He becomes a human bait to catch the vicious pastor and survive every crisis he faces in the foreign, tropical country.

However, In Goo constantly gets tempted by a ridiculous amount of money while he puts his life on the line in the field, unlike what Chang Ho promised. Being suspicious of In Goo, the trailer ends with Chang Ho asking him a daring question, “Do we still have the same goal?”

Narco-Saints will drop on September 9th.

With autumn just around the corner and South Korea ready to celebrate Chuseok, the Korean version of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the drama industry has scheduled a dizzying number of major new show launches in September, including a quartet of legal dramas and Netflix Korea’s biggest show of the year.

4. Narco-Saints

Taking the Chuseok holiday slot that provided the launch pad for Squid Game last year will be the crime drama Narco-Saints.

The most expensive Korean drama ever made (per episode), the series stars Ha Jung-woo (Along with the Gods), Hwang Jung-min (Veteran) and Park Hae-soo and marks the drama debut of acclaimed filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin (The Spy Gone North).

Ha plays a Korean businessman who sets up shop in Suriname in South America and unwittingly becomes involved in the local crime scene when he is forced to cooperate with the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to take down a drug king played by Hwang. (Netflix, September 9)

3/5 stars

Korean men seek to make their fortunes in South America in director Yoon Jong-bin’s epic and explosive Netflix crime saga Narco-Saints.

Ha Jung-woo (Along with the Gods) and Hwang Jung-min (Veteran), two of South Korea’s biggest box office stars, lead a predominantly male cast in this richly realised romp through the streets and jungles of Suriname (the Korean title of the series).

Like many of director Yoon’s previous films (this is his first TV drama), the story follows the tense relationship between two ambitious men who cautiously come to respect each other.

Netflix has afforded Yoon his biggest canvas yet, with a show that was shot on location in the Dominican Republic and is said to have by far the highest per episode budget of any Korean drama.

Echoing grand drug lord sagas like Narcos and Scarface, Narco-Saints is a suitably bloody and operatic affair, but beneath its filmmaking chutzpah is a story that doesn’t add anything new to the mix, beyond a novel location and an intriguing fake religion backdrop – a storyline that is quickly abandoned in favour of classic crime elements.

Loosely based on real events, the six-episode series follows Kang Ingu (Ha), a man who worked his way up from poverty to provide for his family. He still can’t keep the wolves from the door, so when a friend approaches him with a business proposal in a faraway land, it proves impossible to resist.

Leaving his family behind, he relocates to Suriname, an impoverished former Dutch colony. He proceeds to buy up skate from local fishermen on the cheap and exports it back to Korea, where it is a delicacy.

The wily Ingu knows when to grease the pipes, but when the local Chinese gang comes a-knocking, led by the gruff and hirsute Chen Jin (Chang Chen), the kickbacks are beyond what he can pay.

On orders from his Christian wife, Ingu visits a local Korean church, run by the charismatic Pastor Jeon Yohwan (Hwang). Pastor Jeon offers a helping hand and to Ingu’s surprise, his troubles are soon over, though in reality they’ve only just begun.

Ingu soon becomes an unwitting pawn in the international drug trade, and the next person who bails him out is the strait-laced Korean National Intelligence Service agent Choi Changho (Squid Game’s Park Hae-soo).

Changho lays a bombshell on Ingu: Pastor Jeon is actually the cocaine king of Suriname and if Ingu wants Changho’s help, he’s going to need to go undercover and gain the pastor’s trust.

Narco-Saints kicks off with an extended montage of Ingu’s backstory, but it’s only after he arrives in Suriname that it comes to life. Hwang Jung-min’s electric entrance as Pastor Jeon, the vivid location photography and evocative costume and production design are a big part of this, but it’s also because this is the story of Korean men on the road.

Appropriately the first scene, which is a moment we catch up with later in the series, introduces us to Ingu on the road. He’s riding in the back of a truck driving through a Surinamese jungle and intently staring at a baseball signed by pitcher Chan Ho Park, the first Korean-born player in the MLB.

The baseball was given to Ingu by Pastor Jeon, who lionises the achievements of fellow countrymen in Western sports, but is it real? At a different point, the pastor offers a similar gift to a non-Korean, but we know this one is a fake.

Yoon’s films are strongly rooted in male camaraderie, from his edgy indie debut film about military service, The Unforgiven, to his superlative North Korean espionage drama The Spy Gone North; both films screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Much like in The Spy Gone North, which chronicled the tense and surprising friendship between a North Korean diplomat and a South Korean spy posing as a businessman, the unusual bond between Ingu and Pastor Jeon is at the heart of Narco-Saints.

The relationship gets off on the wrong foot, to put it mildly, but ultimately they are both Korean men away from home, trying to make their fortunes. Pastor Jeon has other people around him, like the Chinese-Korean gangster Byeon Kitae (Jo Woo-jin) and the American-raised lawyer David Park (Yoo Yeon-seok), but Ingu is closest to a home that he can’t go back to.

Given its macho focus, it’s perhaps unsurprising that women are given short shrift in the story. Ingu’s wife, Hyejin (Choo Ja-hyun), who barely features after the opening episode, is painted as a nag, and there are only a handful of lines spoken by other women in the story.

Also missing are local characters, save for a greedy president in Pastor Jeon’s pocket and local prostitutes who hang around but never utter a word.

Period blockbusters set in third world countries are currently a major trend in the Korean film industry (including Escape from Mogadishu and several upcoming films), but many of these stories, which are loosely based on actual events, fail to incorporate local protagonists.

With its charismatic drug lord, high production standards and catchy theme from composer Cho Young-wook, Narco-Saints is often a treat to watch. But it is sometimes let down by an overreliance on English scenes between non-native speakers and a story that lacks depth.

Narco-Saints will start streaming on Netflix on September 9.
