Various Korean Actors Will Go Head-To-Head In Theaters This Summer
By Joanne+ dramafever.com summer2013.jpg
Get ready! This summer, multiple movies starring Korean actors are going to be released at about the same time, going head-to-head. Here’s a roundup of a few of them:

First off, Ha Jung Woo will star in the film The Terror Live, playing the role of a news anchor, Yoon Young Hwa, who receives a threatening call from a terrorist during a live broadcast stating, “Will bomb Han River’s Mapo Bridge.” The film then plunges headlong into multiple breath-taking head-to-head combat scenes.
Next, in the film Cold Eyes, surveillance experts will try to track down a trace-less organized crime, with Jung Woo Sung taking on the role of cold and secretive criminal James. The actor will attempt to brush off his soft image and delve into his first villainous role, battling with Sul Kyung Kyu, who plays the chief detective.
Also, fresh off the success of the Hollywood blockbuster G.I. Joe, actor Lee Byung Hun will continue his Hollywood adventure, this time as a simple yet strongly obsessed killer named Han in Red: The Legend, where the CIA agent “R.E.D.” returns ten years after retiring in order to take out deadly weapon called “Night Shadow.”
Lastly, the film Snow Piercer, which takes place during an ice age, on a train in which the last human survivors are riding, during an unstoppable rebellion. Reuniting once again with director Bong Jun Ho, actor Song Kang Ho plays the role of Nam Goong Min Soo, who is the train’s security specialist. It’s a rough and strong character, which we haven’t seen for a long time from the actor.
There are high expectations for the prideful head-to-head combat of Korea’s representative stars both in name and reality. It’ll be hard to choose just one film to see — we might check them all out!

Ha Jung-woo’s new terror flick will close this year’s Puchon film fest, an official of the film fest said on Wednesday.

She told TenAsia over the phone that Ha Jung-woo’s film “THE TERROR LIVE” was chosen as the closing film of the 17th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival [PiFan], held from July 18 to 28.

“THE TERROR LIVE,” set to be released on August 1 in Korea, revolves around a morning radio show host who breaks the news of a terrorist act exclusively.

The unique Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, first held in 1997, represents marginalized film genres highlighting horror, phycho-thriller, sci-fi, and sexually themed films.

Other notable Korean films invited to the film fest include romantic comedy film “How to Use Guys with Secret Tips,” omnibus scary movie “Horror Stories II,” thriller film “Oldmen Never Die,” superhero film “Southern Superhero Showdown,” and horror film “The Truth.”

NIFFF Takes 4 from Korea

by Pierce Conran /  Jun 20, 2013

Korean Genre Cinema Heads to Swiss Fantastic Fest

9lbakg.jpg

A quarter of Korean films will be heading to the Jura province in Switzerland to take part in the lakeside Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival, which is set to unspool from July 5th to 13th. NIFFF is one of the premiere events for genre cinema in Europe. With their strong focus on Asian cinema, Korean films figure strongly on the festival’s lineup year after year.

This year’s batch of Korean cinema includes Ghost Sweepers and The Berlin File in the New Cinema from Asia section. From director SHIN Jeong-won, Ghost Sweepers is a high concept supernatural comedy which, though not a commercial success in its native country, has been well received by critics. It previously screened at this year’s Udine Far East Film Festival. Far more popular at home RYOO Seung-wan’s The Berlin File, which scored over seven million admissions to become the most successful Korean action film of all time. With its location setting, tense pacing, tight choreography and top cast, featuring the likes of HA Jung-woo, HAN Suk-kyu, JEON Ji-hyeon and RYOO Seung-beom, the film has also been embraced overseas. Its selection at NIFFF follows a slew of other invitations to fests around the world.

LEE Wonsuk’s debut film How to Use Guys with Secret Tips will be featured in the ‘Films of the Third Kind’ sidebar. LEE’s work is a fresh take on romantic comedies, which for its color, liveliness and endearing cast, has earned itself spots at many spring and summers festivals, including Udine, the New York Asian Film Festival and next month’s Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan).

Meanwhile, PARK Chan-wook’s Hollywood bow Stoker, starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode, will be on of two ‘Ceremonies’ screenings. Following its strong critical reception at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, PARK’s latest has impressed viewers around the world for its stunning mise-en-scene and gothic coming-of-age story.

NIFFF, now in its 13 edition, has featured a great many Korean films over the years. Hello Ghost, which was recently picked up for a Hollywood remake, took the top Asian film prize in 2011. Tokyo!, the omnibus featuring BONG Joon-ho, also picked up two prizes in 2008.

Actor Ha Jung-woo to Direct and Star in a New Film

2013/07/12 by Lee Eun Ah

Korean top actor Ha Jung-woo will direct and star in a new film, the films’ promoter said on Friday.

1st Look said through a press release that the actor will cinematize Chinese writer Hua Yu’s novel “Chronicle of a Blood Merchant.”

After making his directorical debut through film “Roller Coaster” (2012), this will be Ha’s second directorial work, the promoter added.

The novel, published in 1996, satirically depicts a man who willingly sells his blood for the sake of his family. Ha will play the role of that man in the movie.

Although the book has been a bestseller all over the world and has been translated in to German, Italian, French, Korean, Japanese, English and Japanese, the novel will be made into a film in Korea for the first time.

Writer Hua Yu was quoted in a statement as saying, ”Although many countries wanted to make my book into a film, I trusted my friendship with the production company that currently owns the publication rights so I hope that my book will be made into a film in Korea. … Since I have been impressed by Ha’s acting and directing, I am looking forward to what kind of attraction the film will hold.”

The film is set to crank up in early 2014 and open in Korean theaters after the Korean Thanksgiving holidays which will be around September of the same year.

Meanwhile, Ha’s new film “THE TERROR LIVE,” set to be released on August 1, was chosen as the closing film of the 17th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), held from July 18 to 28.

Ha Jung-woo to direct Blood Merchant

By Stephen Cremin

Production News

South Korea's HA Jung-woo 하정우 | 河正佑 will direct Chronicle of a Blood Merchant 허삼관 매혈기, an adaptation of YU Hua 余華's Chinese novel. It is the actor's second feature film as a director. He will also act in the film.

Ha, best known internationally for his roles in The Chaser 추격자 (2008) and The Berlin File 베를린, is in post-production on his directorial debut, Roller Coaster 롤러코스터, a comedy about a plane caught in a typhoon between Tokyo and Seoul.

Yu's blackly comic novel, published in 1995, is about a factory worker who sells his blood to provide for his family. It spans three decades spanning his youth in the 1950s to the 1980s, through famines and the turmoils of the Cultural Revolution.

A previous novel by the author was adapted into ZHANG Yimou 張藝謀's To Live 活著 (1994) about another Chinese family's experience of the 1950s. Yu also co-wrote the script of ZHANG Yuan 張元's Seventeen Years 過年回家 (1999).

News of the new film was announced today by main investor and distributor Next Entertainment World NEW who told Film Business Asia that the film will begin shooting in Feb 2014 in South Korea. The release date has not yet been fixed.

The film is to be produced by Dhuta 두타연 who previously collaborated with NEW on The Grand Heist 바람과 함께 사라지다. On release last summer, the period action-comedy made ₩34.6 billion (US$30.8 million) on 4.9 million admissions.

The budget and additional cast of Chronicle have yet to be announced.

Ha back with deskbound thriller

‘... there was a rough side to the character - a roughneck can be a newscaster, too.’

July 16,2013

2bru.jpg
Ha Jung-woo

Ha Jung-woo is back on the big screen. The star of last year’s hit action film “The Berlin File” will take on another thriller, this time in “The Terror Live,” directed by first-time feature film director Kim Byung-woo.

As the title suggests, the subject matter is terrorism, and the trailer has attracted plenty of attention for its explosive attack on the Mapo Bridge.

But, unlike in his previous films, this time around Ha does most of his action while sitting down, as he plays a panicked radio host who broadcasts a live phone conversation with the terrorist.

With less than a month until the film’s release, Ha took the time to talk about “The Terror Live,” which will see him play one of his most serious characters yet.

Q. What is so intriguing about this work?

A. The fact that there is just one lead from start to end was new, and despite this, the scenario was entertaining. I wondered how it would be possible to film it, but as I worked on it, I realized that the scenario was really quality stuff.

Were there any challenges that came with filming a movie where most of the scenes are of a studio?

The movie goes by in chapters lasting from five to 12 minutes each. We recorded each chapter without stopping, so we had to tackle it like a play rather than a movie. It had to flow and you had to know your material well. We wanted viewers to not be bored as 95 percent of the movie was me sitting at a desk. It was frustrating, to be confined to one space from start to end. It was just [me] speaking nonstop. The amount of script was insane. The only way was to learn my lines, again and again.

On your commute to the set, you must have travelled on the Mapo Bridge, which of course gets blown up. Was it strange driving on it?

Sure, but not to an unusual degree. I’d be travelling on it and think “Oh, this is that bridge.”

You’ve played a lot of tough guys before. Playing an anchorman must have been a new thing. What was your first thought upon landing the lead?

I thought “Wow, I’ll be speaking in a Seoul dialect for the first time in a long time.” But then I was burdened by the amount of it all.

Also, playing an anchorman, as I was speaking I’d ponder over whether a word was the right one, and so on. Plus, there was still a rough side to the character - a roughneck can be a newscaster, too.

What were your initial thoughts about working with Kim, who of course is a newcomer compared to you.

Even before filming I went down to the location for a month to prepare, because I thought I had to soak up as much as I could.

When I met Kim he handed me a graph depicting a character’s emotions. When I saw it, I realized it was going to be intense and knew it would be a great film. I felt like I could trust him.

You are famous for your trademark eating scenes. Can we expect some comical moments of you eating in this movie?

In this film, sitting at the desk I consumed a lot of tea and water.

Because of the pace of the plot, we couldn’t really slot in an eating scene. At first we did plan for some sandwich and gimbap scenes, but we couldn’t really fit it in. I know that it is an element of my acting that viewers look forward to and I’m grateful for that, but because it broke the rhythm of the film, we had to be mindful of that.

You are up against some stiff competition with some major Korean films coming out next month. How do you feel about your competitors?

I like and respect director Bong Joon-ho [“Snowpiercer”] and would like to work with him at some point. Kim Yong-hwa [“Mr. Go”] I’ve worked with on “Take Off” and we’ve remained close. Then there’s my film, which stars just me. We are all paving the way for Korean cinema and I hope we will all at least break even and be rewarded for our hard work.

Ha Jung-woo to direct film adaptation of Chinese novel

Published : 2013-07-17 19:53 // Updated : 2013-07-17 19:53

Popular actor Ha Jung-woo will direct and star in a film adaptation of famed Chinese author Yu Hua’s 1995 novel “Chronicle of a Blood Merchant,” Korean film house NEW said.

The novel, which is set from the early years of the People’s Republic of China until after the Cultural Revolution in the early 1950s to the 1980s, deals with a man who sells his blood for many years to support his family.

The upcoming movie will be the first film adaptation of the novel. Author Yu’s 1992 novel “To Live” was famously made into a movie by internationally acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou.

0qli.jpg
Actor Ha Jung-woo speaks during a press conference promoting his upcoming film “The Terror Live” in Seoul on July 10. (Yonhap News)

On top of directing the film, Ha will star as the movie’s protagonist. According to NEW, Yu has watched all of Ha’s films and is happy that the Korean actor is directing the film as well as starring in it.

“I think Ha is perfect for the role,” the author said through the Korean promoters. “I am very excited to see how this movie will turn out.”

Ha, on the other hand, said he very much enjoyed Yu’s novel.

“I was touched by the book and am honored to make it into a film,” he said through the promoters. “I will try my best to make it a good one.”

Ha, who is considered one of the most prominent actors in the local film industry, has enjoyed much success in recent years with works including director Ryoo Seung-wan’s spy thriller “The Berlin File” and Yoon Jong-bin’s “Nameless Gangster.”

He has worked with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the country, including Kim Ki-duk, Na Hong-jin and Lee Yoon-ki.

The upcoming project will be Ha’s second film as a director. His directing debut “Rollercoaster” is slated to open in theaters this fall. The comedy tells the story of a Korean hallyu star who gets on a plane to Seoul from Tokyo and encounters severe turbulence during the flight due to a typhoon.

Ha reportedly wrote the script based on his friend and actor Ryoo Seung-bum’s real-life experience. Ryoo said the plane turbulence went on for almost seven hours ― it normally only takes about two hours to get to Seoul from Tokyo ― and he genuinely thought he was going to die.

Before that, Ha’s latest starring film, director Kim Byung-woo’s “The Terror Live,” opens in theaters Aug. 1. In the thriller, he plays a prominent news anchor who receives a call from a terrorist after he bombs Seoul’s Mapo Bridge.

Ha Jung-woo promises an overseas trip to all staff members
By Lee Sun-min Korea JoongAng Daily

24213703.jpg

Actor Ha Jung-woo, who is directing “Fasten Your Seatbelt,” has reportedly promised his staff that he will take them on a trip to an overseas country.
It has recently become common for staff and cast members to take trips to nearby countries after a certain TV drama or movie has gained popularity. However, Ha said he will take everyone on a trip regardless of the movie’s success.
His four friends, who have known Ha for the past decade, recently had a media interview and revealed the promise.
It has been said that Ha suggested Hawaii as a travel destination, but because theaters are not doing so well recently, the staff and cast are considering going somewhere close, such as Phuket, Thailand.
The movie was released in local theaters on Thursday.
