7 K-Dramas And Films That Use “Flower” In Their Titles

From bud to bloom, flowers are often seen as a metaphor for life, a confession of love, and a caress of hope. Their fragrance radiates happiness, drawing one into its healing embrace. From cherry blossoms to camellias, edelweiss, delphiniums, and orchids, each have had a significant role in K-dramas. The language of flowers plays a key role in the narrative, depicting the many emotions of love, passion, grief, agony, and even destruction.

Since spring is in the air, what could be more perfect than to revisit seven K-drama and films, which weave in the word flower in their title?

Boys Over Flowers

Boys-Over-Flowers.jpg

This show achieved a cult-like status amongst K-drama fans and was one of the key players in spurring the Hallyu wave beyond Korean shores. “Boys Over Flowers” also catapulted its leading man Lee Min Ho to matinée idol status, making him the ultimate poster boy of cool.

The F4 is headlined by Gu Jun Pyo (Lee Min Ho), the arrogant rich heir to the illustrious Shinhwa Group of Industries.

Along with him is Ji Hoo (Kim Hyun Joong), Woo Bin (Kim Joon), and Yi Jung (Kim Bum), who all have nobility status at the super elite Shinhwa High School. But the arrival of Geum Jan Di (Ku Hye Sun), the daughter of a dry cleaner, irks Jun Pyo endlessly. Jan Di does not care for Jun Pyo’s reputation, nor is she taken in with his wealth and status.

Though she is bullied and mocked by the F4 and their groupies at school, it’s not long until Jan Di’s feisty and spunky spirit makes her a favorite amongst the F4. It’s the push and pull between Jun Pyo’s feelings for Jan Di which form the core of the story as he realizes his love for her. However, winning her over is tougher than he has anticipated.

The classic “rich boy, poor girl” love story, “Boys Over Flowers” remains one of those frequently visited dramas even after 14 years since it first aired in 2009. A show that initiated many into K-drama land, it also found its way into popular culture with the fashion, dialogues, and scenes being parodied by fans. Also adding to its many credits is the incredible OST, which became a hit as well.

1 Year of Pachinko: Why the Lee Min Ho, Kim Min Ha and Youn Yuh Jung starrer series became popular

Let’s revisit the drama that follows three generations of a Korean family that were affected by war and violence.

1536552191_pachinko_1280*720.jpg

This drama is based on a novel by Lee Min Jin, a 1.5-generation Korean-American immigrant. It is said that the actual writer also went through a difficult process against her parents' opposition from immigrating to the United States to meeting and marrying her husband from Japan. Japan is a very special country for them when they think of the atmosphere of their nation, which will not be as sensitive as the 'Korea-Japan’ no matter what country in the world sports.

About Pachinko

The original novel 'Pachinko' is set in the 1900s, when Japan invaded Korea and suffered all sorts of persecution, how the hard-won daughter 'Sunja' grew up through the times and her country, what choices the 'Sunja' made to survive, How heavy was the weight of life that she had to bear with her choice, what 'hometown' meant to those who survived, and the descendants of 'Sunja' who left their homeland and settled in Japan. She calmly deals with how she lives under the influence.

The characters:

Youn Yun Jung, who won the Academy Award, played the role of the old 'Sunja', Lee Min Ho as 'Han Soo', Jin Ha as 'Solomon', Kim Min Ha as the teenage 'Sunja', Anna Saway as Naomi, Jung Eun Chae as the young Kyung Hee, Jung In Ji as Yang Jin, Jimmy Simpson as Tom, Han Jun Woo as Joseph, Minami Kaho as Etsuko, Noh Sang Hyun as Isaac, Soji Arai as Mojasu, and Jun Yuna as the young Sunja. Among them, people who are easily recognizable to the public are Youn Yun Jung, Lee Min Ho and Jung Eun Chae. The fact that a large number of unfamiliar faces appear and perform passionately as characters in the work is the condition that allows viewers to most easily believe that the work is 'real'.

Actors' acting and art that seem to show the real 1900's, and of course, the characters and art of the 2000's that feel like their real children.

Lee Min Ho: The SI unit of Chaebol Korean dramas

Below is a breakdown of three times when Lee Min Ho was the ‘It Chaebol’ of K-dramas.

294876341_102434814_554509325247260_4143

South Korean model and actor Lee Min Ho is one of the most popular names both within and outside South Korea. His 2009 drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’ is often referred to as the flagbearer of the Hallyu wave. The show was a massive commercial success and is to date a favourite amongst the better part of K-drama fans across the world. While Lee Min Ho has been a part of a plethora of K-dramas, his roles as the Chaebol protagonist in ‘Boys Over Flowers’ and ‘King: Eternal Monarch’ has made him the SI unit of chaebol K-dramas. The aforementioned dramas are to date incredibly popular and have massively contributed to putting Lee Min Ho on the Hallyu Stars map.

Spoiler

1 | Boys Over Flowers (2009)

'Boys Over Flowers' is a 2009 K-drama based on a Japanese Manga of the same name. The show follows Geum Jan Di, a scholarship student, into her new, fancy high-school - Shinhwa High. Geum Jan Di has a hard time fitting in at her new school given the sharp difference between her and her peers’ economic backgrounds. Her time at school gets worse when she manages to get on the bad side of the school’s chairwoman’s son Go Jun Pyo (Lee in Ho). Lee Min Ho’s role in the show was loved for its immaculate visual appeal and Go Jun Pyo’s ultimate ‘bad boy’ charm.

2 | The Heirs

‘The Heirs’ is a 2013 Korean high-school drama that narrates the story of Cha Eun Sang, a diligent girl from a humble background as she navigates her way through an arrogant group of privileged high-school students who never shy away from boasting about their money. Here, Lee Min Ho was seen playing the role of Kim Tan, a former bully who has now reformed himself into a better person. For many, ‘The Heirs’ was nothing short of a tribute to Lee Min Ho’s first commercial hit ‘Boys Over Flowers’. The only difference between the two shows was the progression of Lee Min Ho’s character arc.

3 | King: The Eternal Monarch (2020)

The makers of ‘King: Eternal Monarch’ did not shy away from presenting Lee Min Ho to the viewers as the ultimate Chaebol that he is. Only this time, he was richer and he was a king. ‘King: Eternal Monarch’ was Lee Min Ho’s most recent appearance as the rich main lead. The show went on to receive excellent viewership ratings and became one of the most popular K-dramas that year.

*** After I watched again the video of  "7 First Kisses", I suddenly thought that I hope LMH and Ji Chang Wook could collaborate in a drama in the future. But, will this be possible? Who will play the 2nd lead? In case, I want them to be in a rom-com genre. Besides, they're one amongst the romance kings of the K-Drama world. And their visuals are out of this world. But, with this love triangle in a rom-com genre, would you be able to choose one of them?  Sigh..... this combination would be virtually impossible, huh?   Well, if this will happen in the future.......... :kisslevel:   it would be a dream come true.

Happy 13th Anniversary PT!  I think this an underrated LMH drama.

********

So, my cousin, who lives outside Boston, saw a LMH standee for the ginseng in Hmart.  She said she would have stolen the standee for me if she thought she could have gotten away with it lol!  Has anyone else in the US found a product LMH endorses with his picture or better yet, standee?  @CallieP and I check our respective Hmart, but haven't found anything.  I haven't found other celebrity endorsement other than IU and BTS.

@CarolynH  I agree with you - The drama is underappreciated. It is a popular drama yet however rarely mentioned compared to other Lee MinHo's dramas. This is his drama where it did not receive the same level of attention as others. I feel it didn't get the credit it deserved.   :weary:  :tears:

*** "Pachinko"  has the most hypnotizing opening sequences ever - where all our main characters are seen dancing their hearts out gleefully. There's no way we're ever skipping this. In fact, we might just dance along! This is one of the most gorgeous opening credit scenes. This is important since this is the first thing we see when we start the show. Usually, opening intros is accompanied by visuals that hint at the storyline and sometimes introduce the characters along with an opening song. Oftentimes, after seeing it once, we tend to press the "Skip Intro" button to quickly get to the start of the episode. However, there are some K-drama intros that simply cannot be skipped and this drama is one of them.   :sweet:
