40 K-Dramas You'll Be Completely Hooked On

If you're not watching Korean dramas, better known as K-dramas, then you're missing out in several ways. First, there's the big-picture, cultural impact to consider: K-dramas have become a worldwide phenomenon, and if you're going to be a pop culture connoisseur/productive denizen of the entertainment-loving internet—and you're here, so you obviously are both of those things—then you need to be versed in all things K-drama. And then there's the more important reason to watch K-dramas: They are addictive and amazing, and you'll thank yourself for adding them to your pop culture diet.

Known for their interesting storylines and intense (if sometimes predictable) plot twists, Korean dramas can go from super sappy to incredibly heartbreaking to "RickRoll'D, what was that?" in a heartbeat. That variety is exactly what keeps viewers coming back for more. Here, we've listed the best K-dramas to watch.

Boys Over Flowers

Boys Over Flowers is an old-school teen drama, focused on a group of popular/privileged/not-so-nice boys at the prestigious Shinhwa High School. The group, known as F4, bully others to get their way—until a working class girl named Geum Jan-di arrives at the school on scholarship and stands up to the boys.

The King: Eternal Monarch

This Korean drama has it all: parallel universes, time travel, a handsome king, a strong female detective, tragedy, and romance. The show tells the story of Lee Gon (played by one of South Korea's most popular actors: Lee Min-ho), a Korean emperor who rules The Kingdom of Corea (the North and South are still unified in this world) and discovers a portal opening in the bamboo forest that leads him to a parallel universe—the world that we know today. He meets, and falls in love, with detective Jung Tae-eul (played by Goblin's Kim Go-eun) in this world and they have to work together to close this time portal before their two worlds collide and freeze in time forever. Will they succeed in their journey and will their love be able to transcend time?

Spoiler

Actor Jung Ho-yeon's popularity is unexpected. As the popularity of "Squid Game" continues, her number of SNS followers, which was previously 400,000, is already about to surpass 20 million.

As of 10 a.m. on the 12th, Jung Ho-yeon's Instagram followers reached 1.19 million, nearly 20 million.

There are only two actors, Lee Min-ho and Lee Jong-seok, who have more than 20 million followers in Korea. Lee Min-ho has 26 million followers and Lee Jong-seok has 20.4 million followers, respectively.

"Find the 2nd Squid Game". Apple and Disney → TVing K-Contents.

Amid the movement to "make a second Squid Game," global interest in "Korean-style original" is flooding.

Global interest in Korean-style content is rising. The K-content market, which has already been recognized with Netflix's "Kingdom" and "Sweet Home," was popularized more by "Squid Game" as it continues to be a box office success that has changed its status from before. Amid this unprecedented sensation, global OTT (online video services) such as Disney Plus and Apple TV, as well as domestic OTT industries represented by TVing and Wavve, are competing to secure content to discover a second "squid game."

Disney Plus has declared its entry into the domestic OTT market, where Netflix's first-tier system has been solidified, and Apple TV+ has taken steps to advance into Korea, continuing to discover and produce original content. According to the industry, Apple TV Plus is producing content with a domestic production company. Apple TV is currently producing the drama Pachinko, of the same name with the novel by a Korean-American writer. It is a work featuring Yoon Yeo-jung, and Lee Min-ho.

2021.10.13

A Korean drama that evolves from year to year. What has stood out in the past few years is a work that draws in audiences with many highlights, combining multiple genres. This time, let's pay attention to the drama in which the main characters, crossing time and space, appear in different ways.

Lee Min Ho and Jung Ji Hyun starring! Fantasy love story "The Legend of the Blue Sea" about a fatal love between a handsome crook and a mermaid.

Don't miss a drama in which characters who continue to live on over time take an active role. "The Legend of the Blue Sea," by Park Chi Eun, writer of "My Love From the Star" and "Crash Landing On You," has the characteristic: "You can only fall in love once in a lifetime, and tears are shed. turn into pearls. ”, The main character is a mermaid who seems to have come out of a fairy tale. The relationship between the people of the Joseon era and the people living in the current era is gradually deteriorating. In the middle of the reign of the Joseon Dynasty, by decree of Tamryong Prefecture, he tried to return a mermaid caught in a village by the sea to the sea, but felt her overflow from the inside.

Over time, Tamrion, reincarnated as the talented crook Junjae, reunites with a mermaid on a beach in Spain. Jung Ji Hyun from "My Love from the Star" expresses his sad feelings for Jung Jae, who helped him with a few lines and an expressive expression. In addition, Lee Min Ho, who has starred in popular dramas such as Boys Above Flowers, Faith, and Heirs, behaves unpredictably like an alien. I have become a gentle and perfect guy who loves things.

Son Ye Jin – Lee Min Ho once filmed a steamy bed scene together, Hyun Bin might get jealous

“Personal Taste” is not considered a success, but the double visuals of Lee Min Ho and Son Ye Jin are undeniable.

Throughout her nearly 20-year career in the industry, Son Ye Jin has acted alongside many handsome male co-stars, Lee Min Ho is one of them. Unfortunately, their drama – “Personal Taste” could not achieve the success as expected, so not many viewers remember this collaboration.

scale_1200

The story of “Personal Taste” has a special starting point. The two leads initially have a casual relationship when Gae In (Son Ye Jin) originally thinks Jin Ho (Lee Min Ho) is gay, so she let him move in with her. The couple then has countless close and sweet moments. In the last episode of the drama, when the two characters officially live together as romantic partners, Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ho even filmed a steamy bed scene. Although she is an actress who is not afraid to look revealing on screen, Son Ye Jin rarely plays hot scenes on TV, so this scene in “Personal Taste” makes fans of the actress extremely excited.

“Personal Taste” is a romantic comedy series about Jeon Jin Ho (played by Lee Min Ho) – a young, talented and handsome architect. He was trying to find a way to live at the house called Sang Gu Je to do some research and find the inspiration for his Art Museum design project. The owner of the house was Park Gae In – a clumsy, unknown interior designer and the daughter of a famous architect. To get into the house, Jin Ho pretended to be gay to convince the heartbroken house owner who needed a gay friend. Even though this drama was not a very big hit, the sweet chemistry between Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ho still made fans’ hearts go pit-a-pat.

Interesting article from the BBC News:

Squid Game: The rise of Korean drama addiction

The K-drama takeover is far from the overnight sensation it may first seem.

Although they've only recently gripped worldwide audiences, K-dramas have been popular in Asia for decades.

Increasing liberalisation throughout the country in the 90s saw huge amounts of money poured into the entertainment industry. As Japan battled economic decline and China rose, South Korean culture pounced - offering TV that was both more relatable than US shows and morally palatable to Beijing.

Over the next decade it challenged Japanese might to become a new purveyor of Asian cool, with 20% of viewers in Japan watching 2003 drama Winter Sonata.

A 2011 report by the Korean Culture and Information Service concluded: "In many Asian cities, Korean dramas seem to be influencing lifestyles and consumer behaviour, which speaks to their cultural appeal"

Then the pandemic happened, and with the western entertainment industry (literally) shuttered down, K-drama fever truly hit. Netflix revealed that viewing of Korean content across Asia increased fourfold in 2020 compared to 2019.

London-based writer and K-drama fanatic Taylor-Dior Rumble explains: "Most popular K-dramas are typically ultra stylised, glossy and quite removed from reality, which is why they're such a great form of escapism".

"After such a bleak few years, people are gravitating more towards heart-warming forms of entertainment" she says.

But while many of most accessible K-drama romantic comedies conform to predictable Bollywood-style conventions, be it a love triangle or a cliff-hanger moment, Rumble says there's also a "wide range of shows containing plenty of unique ideas and unexpected storylines that you'd probably never get from a British or American channel", and she says they range from "fantasy, sci-fi, action to thriller".

This broad appeal is helped by the family-friendly tone. "There's practically no nudity or sex," adds Rumble. "Korean society is quite conservative so this means a lot of their shows hold cross-culture appeal."

Add in high-end production values and stunning locations, and Rumble says the dramas offer "a rich and pleasurable viewing experience that you simply don't get enough of anywhere else".

K-dramas also reflect worldwide social stresses that resonate with many younger generations.

"It tackled a lot of situations, such as debt and the pressures of providing, which was probably somewhat relatable to a world still recovering from a pandemic that has been incredibly difficult for a lot of people."

Hooked after Squid Game? Here are six K-drama alternatives

Inheritors (for KUWTK fans)

Also known as The Heirs, Inheritors depicts the friendships, rivalries and love lives of young, rich heirs led by Kim Tan (Lee Min-Ho) and a girl named Cha Eun-Sang (Park Shin-Hye).

Expect love triangles, drama that would make the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful blush and storylines the Kardashians could only dream of.

It’s good to see the BBC article recommending Heirs- but it’s a shame that

Netflix UK only has  BOF; Heirs  and TKEM on. Unlike other countries LOBS has never been on Netflix UK.   I have requested via the online suggestion form that Netflix put City Hunter and LOBS on but no luck!

@syntyche I guess it still works. But, if Netflix recognizes you using a VPN, you can get this message : Netflix VPN Blocked – Connect to a Different Server - But, this only happens when the DNS server location doesn't match up to your IP address. ... If this doesn't match the IP address you are using, Netflix will flag you as using a VPN. A way around this is to connect to a different server. :Megalol:
