On January 28, South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Foundation for International Culture Exchange released their 2021 Overseas Hallyu (Korean Wave) Survey. Respondents included 8,500 Korean cultural content consumers from 18 countries, such as the United States, China, Japan, and more. They were asked questions about Korean culture including television shows, films, music, and other topics, and the survey was conducted online from September 24 to November 4, 2020.

When asked to name their favorite Korean singer, 22 percent of respondents chose BTS—a rise of 6.8 percent points for the group since the previous year’s 15.2 percent. BLACKPINK came in second (chosen by 13.5 percent of respondents), PSY was third (2.9 percent), TWICE fourth (2.4 percent), and EXO fifth (2.1 percent).

Lee Min Ho topped the list of favorite Korean actors, chosen by 9.6 percent of respondents. Hyun Bin was second (3.5 percent), Gong Yoo third (2.3 percent), Song Hye Kyo fourth (2.1 percent), and Lee Jong Suk fifth (2 percent).

Among the respondents’ favorite Korean films, “Parasite” ranked No. 1 with 18.4 percent, followed by “Train to Busan” in second with 10.2 percent. “Peninsula” grabbed third with 3.5 percent, “#ALIVE” took fourth with 2.1 percent, and “Time to Hunt” came in fifth with 1.6 pecent.

“Crash Landing on You” was the leading favorite Korean drama with a score of 9.5 percent. It was followed by “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” with 4.1 percent, “The World of the Married” and “Itaewon Class” both with 2.8 percent, and “Kingdom” with 2.5 percent.

Dramas were the most popular Korean content, with 29.7 percent of respondents answering that they watch Korean dramas. Beauty products and videos were the next popular (27.5 percent), followed by variety shows (26.9 percent) and fashion (24.8 percent). Many people stated that they consumed more Korean variety shows, dramas, and games compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic.

SILENT SEA PRODUCTION UPDATE

The series production originally targeted January 2021 to wrap up filming, then it was moved to February but now they estimate to finish filming in March.

Just a note: Sweet Home also finished filming in March last year and was shown December. Expect Silent Sea to be on Netflix on or before December 2021 or even first quarter of 2022.

Train To Busan” Is Getting An American Remake… And Fans Are Not Happy

Remakes are always a slippery topic…

Yesterday, it was confirmed that the hit Korean movie Train to Busan is getting an American remake with Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto to create it.

FeQxK0lu5zCuigIAQS1nZa-GSg_BIi21MfIXfURPUQpJrSPmJDEZwPQCcjO-5NgIx-5plFzL-NlUYr4w14J7tLyHdZIJxz6-6OUJVlGOuP44ow=w32-fSoften=1,100,0-rp-e365

Train to Busan‘s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 launched it into popularity, quickly becoming one of the most iconic and recognized Korean films (before Parasite now). Its popularity led to the less popular sequel Train to Busan: Peninsula, which was released last year. As with most popular movies, the idea of sequels and remakes is always a possibility.

As soon as the news of an American remake of Train to Busan hit the internet, fans around the world took to social media.

American fans have been comparing it to the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action film and now upcoming live-action TV series remake which was heavily criticized for white-washing the cast and chopping up the story. Even the original creators of the show have left production.

Remakes of any movie (or show) are notorious for disappointing audiences and often white-washing casts. Many fans just don’t want the same to happen to the beloved classic.

Can't wait for Silent Sea.

Seeing Gong Yoo golfing in Discovery Expedition cf was really something lol. I just never thought to see him golf before hahaa. I guess so use to seeing GY fish ;)

I realized Kim Sun Young did confirm when the drama would air in her interview in January - I read this before but I didn't read carefully about the drama:

The relationship with Jung Woo-sung continued to Netflix's'Sea of Silence'. Kim Sun-young pointed out, "I am filming the 'Sea of Silence' produced by Jung Woo-sung with Bae Doona and Gong Yoo," and "It will be open in the second half of this year and the first half of next year.
