GONG Yoo Mulls Lead Role in XU FU

Top Star May Appear in Legend of Chinese Explorer

XScYZJpiBoSClTwAvKqS.jpg

GONG Yoo is considering an offer to appear in Xu Fu (working title), the latest film from Architecture 101 (2012) director LEE Yong-ju. Should the star sign on, it would be his first feature film role since 2016’s The Age of Shadows.

Xu Fu will be based on the legendary exploits of the Chinese explorer of that same name, who never returned after being tasked with tracking down the elixir of life.

The popular actor’s last screen performance was in the hit TV drama Goblin, alongside KIM Go-eun, which aired over the 2016-17 winter season. Prior to that, GONG had a particularly notable 2016 in theaters, as he appeared in no less than three films. First was the LEE Yoon-ki drama A Man and a Woman (2016) alongside JEON Do-yeon, which he followed with a pair of box office successes: the global smash TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) from YEON Sang-ho, that year’s biggest summer title, and the top offering for the Chuseok holiday season, KIM Jee-woon’s Colonial Era spy action-drama The Age of Shadows.

Prior to the smash hit romantic drama Architecture 101, which drew over four million viewers, LEE was responsible for the acclaimed horror film Possessed (2009).

Xu Fu is looking to begin shooting later this year for an anticipated release at some point in 2019.

K-drama idol Gong Yoo gets his own movie house in Hong Kong

Korean company CGV has dedicated one of its cinema houses in Hong Kong to the actor, and parts of the proceeds from ticket sales at that theatre house will go towards the city’s film industry

Popular South Korean actor Gong Yoo is getting his own theatre house in Hong Kong.

Korean cinema company CGV is opening its newest location in Hong Kong at D2 Place Phase II in Lai Chi Kok this month – and it is dedicating one of its houses to Gong Yoo.

“I am so honoured to have my name on one of the cinema [houses],” said Gong Yoo in a press release. “I hope that all of you can enjoy watching movies in comfort and joy in this house.”

The new CGV cinemas will be home to four houses, each with an individual theme, and will house a total of 500 people.

The Gong Yoo House aims to celebrate the actor, who has played a key role in promoting Korean movies on a global scale. Multimedia content related to Gong Yoo will be on display, while parts of the profits from ticket sales for movies screening in the Gong Yoo House will go towards Hong Kong’s film industry.

Gong Yoo is best known for his roles in blockbusters, including Train to Busan, as well as massively popular Korean dramas such as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (also known as Goblin).

Another highlight of the CGV cinema includes a ScreenX House, featuring 270-degree panoramic film projection technology. The curved screen, which stretches out along the surrounding walls, is meant to bring about a more immersive movie experience.

Gong Yoo Becomes First Figure To Be Honored By K Star Theater Project Overseas

62a5eef8feeb49639524b78f9c377c38.jpeg?s=

Gong Yoo will be the first person to participate in an overseas K STAR theater project.

K STAR Theater Project aims to increase awareness of Korean cinema abroad. The project thanks one figure central in advancing the film industry internationally by dedicating a theater to that figure. It also provides various observational experiences for viewers as well. The “Gong Yoo Theater” will take place in Hong Kong, at CGV Cinemas D2 Place in September, with a total of 128 seats.

The “Gong Yoo Theater” is the first theater project abroad, as well as the first film figure-related theater in Hong Kong. Part of the profits for the theater will go towards supporting developing the Hong Kong film industry, such as backing independent films, documentary films that contribute to society, young directors, and more.

Gong Yoo shared, “Congratulations and thank you for the ‘Gong Yoo Theater’ in CGV Cinemas D2 Place in Hong Kong. It’s an honor as an actor to contribute to such a meaningful project. Through this opportunity, I hope that many films will be exchanged in Hong Kong.”

The actor has appeared in a wide spectrum of films, such as “Silenced,” “A Man and A Woman,” “Train to Busan,” and more. “Train to Busan” in particular was invited to a midnight screening at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival. The film achieved 11.56 million moviegoers in Korea, and was a box office success in Hong Kong, bringing in over 68 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately $8.6 million). It also achieved first place in box offices in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
