All three Korean films which were preparing to be released last December were postponed. As the COVID-19 situation worsened, Seobok, Life is Beautiful, and New Year Blues placed a halt in their promotional activities and yet again decided to wait without a solid plan for the future. This is not only relevant to the three. As COVID-19 hit the world last year, multiple works began to adjust their schedules and hence, freezing the culture of watching movies in theatres. Will the situation improve this year so that we can watch the works we’ve been waiting and anticipating for? Let’s have a look at some of the movies we could have greeted on big screens in 2020 if it wasn’t for COVID-19, as we hope to get to watch them this year.

 

 

Kingmaker

Choi Min Sik plays the role of prisoner number 203 who runs away in midst of serving prison time to find his last happiness, and Park Hae Il plays Nam Sik, who unexpectedly got to join in the special journey of 203.

After hitting 10 million sales in the box office with both Haeundae and Ode to My Father, Yoon Je Kyun has recreated the musical  Hero into a film. It draws the one last year of An Jung Geun who has passed away as he was sentenced to death by the Japanese court after assassinating Ito Hirobumi at Harbin in October of 1909. Jung Sung Hwa, the original cast of the musical, transformed as An Jung Geun in the movie as he gave a resolute and determined performance. The movie was originally planned to be released in the summer of 2020 to mark the 110th Anniversary of An Jung Geun’s death, but it was unfortunately postponed due to the COVID-10 situation.

Nana is the key to the case, Kim Sae Hee while Choi Kwang Il plays Han Young Seok, who tries to seek the truth of another case. Though the movie was planned to be released in the second half of last year, its production briefing session was canceled and postponed due to the pandemic.

Lee Sun Kyun, Yoo Teo, Lee Yoo Young and Seo Ji Hye will be working together in Apple TV Plus original series Mr. Robin (working title) directed by Kim Ji Woon.

 

According to Starnews, these four actors have recently decided to star in Mr. Robin and are coordinating details. Based on the webtoon Dr. Brain, medical mystery thriller Mr. Robin depicts what a genius brain scientist experiences as he accesses the dead people’s brain. Along with Mr. Robin, “Dr. Brain” and “Alfa-Romeo” are being considered for the title.

 

Director Kim was in talks to direct the drama version of Dr. Brain many years ago, but the production was halted for years and only recently began to specify the plans. YG Studio Plex will be producing the drama as a 6-part series. Originally, Kim was scheduled to lead the French drama Cloud 47 (working title), but the production was postponed indefinitely due to inside affairs and the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The fact that this is Kim Ji Woon’s first-ever series drama and a joint production with Apple TV Plus, which is preparing in earnest to enter the Korean market, has made headlines.

 

Director Kim has offered Lee Sun Kyun the title role early on and has recently completed the cast lineup that includes Yoo Teo, Lee Yoo Young, and Seo Ji Hye.

 

Meanwhile, Mr. Robin will begin filming in February, and the release date will be discussed with Apple TV Plus in line with their entry into South Korea.

Moon Jeong Hee talks about how she ended her life in France thanks to Lee Sun Kyun, her bestie from Korea National University of Arts.

In an episode of MBN’s food documentary Eat More Before You Leave (literal title) aired on the 24th, Moon Jeong Hee visits a house at the peak of a mountain as she spends a heart-warming day with Lim Ji Ho, Kang Ho Dong, and Hwang Je Sung.

 

On this day, the actress opens up, as she bursts into laughter while Hwang Je Sung impersonates Lee Sun Kyun, her best friend from the Korea National University of Arts. She then tells stories about her 20s to the members of the show.

She confesses, “I thought I’d get a good piece as soon as my graduation from college. But I ended up failing hundreds of auditions.” She also revealed that some works revoked her position even after accepting her as a cast member. Apparently, she left for France since then and lived there for three years, until her life was changed by Lee Sun Kyun’s phone call.

 

Moon Jeong Hee tells the story of Lee Sun Kyun, “thanks to people like him, I was able to gain positive energy. Thanks to him, I was able to stop escaping my reality in France.”

The production crew also said that Moon Jung Hee gave a big laugh since the beginning of her appearance on the show as she impersonated Song Yoon Ah and Lee Sun Kyun. “She told an honest and touching story about her past in which she was lost, and the lesson she learned from it. Following COVID-19 Draught Major Projects Hope to Meet Audiences This Year

 

 

Following its most difficult year, the Korean film industry is looking to stage a comeback later in 2021. The global COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the film industry, emptying out theaters, delaying releases and even shutting down some productions, but filmmakers and studios are collectively eyeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

 

The Korean film industry had to hold off on releasing many films last year, which has led to something of a backlog of exciting projects awaiting release. Add in all the new projects that went into production since the pandemic began and what you have is a long list of major titles with something for everyone. Beyond one film hitting Netflix next month, it is still unclear when any of these will find their way to theaters, but once the floodgate opens, it may well be hard to keep up. 

 

 

Decision to Leave

After venturing to TV with the John LE CARRÉ adaptation The Little Drummer Girl for the BBC, acclaimed director PARK Chan-wook is returning to Korea with his next project, the romantic thriller Decision to Leave.

 

Currently in production, the film stars PARK Hae-il (The Host, 2006) as a detective who becomes entangled with a mysterious widow, played by Chinese star TANG Wei (Late Autumn, 2010), who becomes a suspect in his latest murder investigation. The film co-stars GO Kyoung-pyo (Seven Years of Night, 2018), PARK Yong-woo (Hwayi: A Monster Boy, 2013), and LEE Jung-hyun (Peninsula, 2020).

 

 

Emergency Declaration

 

After Joint Security Area /JSA (2000), The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008) and The Age of Shadows (2016), superstars SONG Kang-ho and LEE Byung-hun are reuniting for the fourth time on Emergency Declaration (2020), a new aviation disaster film from The King (2017) director HAN Jae-rim, who previously directed SONG in The Show Must Go On (2007) and The Face Reader (2013).

 

The story takes place aboard a commercial airliner that is forced to make an emergency landing following a terror incident. Also on board in the star-studded production are JEON Do-yeon (Secret Sunshine, 2007), KIM Nam-gil (Pandora, 2016) and IM Si-wan (The Attorney, 2013).

 

 

Hansan: Rise of the Dragon

 

Seven years after claiming the top spot on the all-time box office charts, director KIM Han-min returns with Hansan: Rise of the Dragon, the second instalment in a trilogy of stories about the legendary admiral YI Sun-shin, which began with his previous smash hit Roaring Currents.

 

PARK Hae-il plays the admiral in this story, which focuses on the Battle of Hansan Island in 1592, five years before the events of Roaring Currents. Noryang, the third film in the trilogy with KIM Yun-seok in the main role, is expected to begin shooting this month.

Haeundae (2009) and Ode to My Father (2014) director JK YOUN has been busy producing major hits through his outfit JK Films of late, such as Confidential Assignment (2017), Keys to the Heart (2018) and Pawn (2020), but he’s finally back in the director’s chair for the big-budget period film Hero. 

 

Originally expected to hit theaters last summer, Hero is an adaptation of the hit musical of the same name and features CHUNG Sung-hwa reprising his role from the stage as independence fighter AN Jung-geun during the Japanese Colonial Era. He is co-starring KIM Go-eun (Coin Locker Girl, 2015) and NA Moon-hee (I Can Speak, 2017).

 

 

Life Is Beautiful

 

YUM Jung-ah (A Tale of Two Sisters, 2003) and RYU Seung-ryong (Extreme Job, 2019) lead the cast of the upcoming musical Life Is Beautiful, from Default (2018) director CHOI Kook-hee. YUM plays a woman who discovers she has a terminal illness and decides to track down her first love with the help of her husband, played by RYOO.

 

Originally scheduled for release at the end of last year, Life Is Beautiful is a road movie described as Korea’s first ‘Jukebox musical’ and will feature several popular songs from the 1970s to the 2000s.

 

 

Killing Romance

 

Director LEE Won-suk, known for the cult classic romcom How to Use Guys with Secret Tips (2013) and the period film The Royal Tailor (2014), will be back in theatres this year with his new comedy Killing Romance. 

 

Extreme Job (2019) actress LEE Ha-nee plays a former star who marries a corporate magnate on an island, played by LEE Sun-kyun of PARASITE (2019). LEE’s Extreme Job co-star GONG Myoung plays a young shirker she meets on the island who is studying for an exam.

 

 

Mogadishu

Action maestro RYOO Seung-wan, known for The Berlin File (2013), Veteran (2015) and The Battleship Island (2017), returns with a new action tale in Mogadishu, a ripped-from-the-headlines story of diplomats from North and South Korea who must join forces to escape Mogadishu when Civil War breaks out in Somalia in the 1990s.

 

Stars KIM Yun-seok (The Chaser, 2008) and ZO In-sung (The King, 2017) team up with RYOO for the first time in this action project that was shot on location in Morocco. The Lotte Entertainment production was thankfully able to complete production just before the pandemic struck.

 

 

Phantom

 

Like a Virgin (2006), The Silenced (2015) and Believer (2018) director LEE Hae-young is currently shooting his new project, a Japanese Occupation-set spy thriller called Phantom. 

 

SUL Kyung-gu (Cold Eyes, 2013), LEE Ha-nee, PARK So-dam (PARASITE) and PARK Hae-soo (Time to Hunt, 2020) lead the cast in this story which takes place in 1933 about five people suspected of being a spy for the anti-resistance codenamed ‘phantom’ who must keep their wits about them while being interrogated in an isolated hotel.

 

 

Seobok

 

Director LEE Yong-ju makes his long-awaited comeback following his hit romantic drama Architecture 101 (2012) with the highly anticipated sci-fi action-drama Seobok, which was originally scheduled to open in December.

 

GONG Yoo (TRAIN TO BUSAN, 2016) stars as a former intelligence agent who is tasked with escorting Seobok, the world’s first human clone, to a secure location. The agent strives to protect the clone from several different factions who try to abduct the clone along the way. Young TV superstar PARK Bo-gum, who plays the title character, looks set to conquer 2021 with starring roles in this and Wonderland.

 

 

Space Sweepers

 

Originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2020, the big-budget film SPACE SWEEPERS, Korea’s first ever space-set production, changed its plans late last year and is now scheduled to bow on Netflix this coming February 5.

 

Director JO Sung-hee reunites with his A Werewolf Boy (2012) star SONG Joong-ki for this tale of a spaceship named Victory that trawls outer space for scrap and takes on some unexpected cargo. SONG is the ship’s pilot while KIM Tae-ri of The Handmaiden (2016) plays the captain, Extreme Job (2019) star JIN Seon-kyu is the engineer and YOO Hae-jin of LUCK-KEY (2016) voices a robot on board.

 

 

Wonderland

 

Acclaimed filmmaker KIM Tae-yong, known for Memento Mori (1999), Family Ties (2005) and Late Autumn (2010), is another major director making a long-awaited return to screen this year. His new project is the big-budget sci-fi fantasy drama Wonderland.

 

‘Wonderland’ is a virtual world run by an institution that gives people the opportunity to spend time with people they’ve lost or who they are unable to communicate with. JUNG Yu-mi (The Silenced, 2011) and CHOI Woo-shik (PARASITE, 2019) play coordinators of Wonderland, while PARK Bo-gum, BAE Suzy (Architecture 101), GONG Yoo and TANG Wei play characters who use the service.

Apple TV+ today announced an expansion of its sweeping international slate with a series order for “Dr. Brain,” a new sci-fi thriller based on the widely popular Korean webtoon that will be written and directed by visionary filmmaker KIM Jee-Woon (“A Tale of Two Sisters,” “I Saw the Devil”), and star SAG Award winner LEE Sun-Kyun (“Parasite”). The series marks the first Korean-language project for Apple TV+.

Now in production in South Korea and set to debut later this year, “Dr. Brain” is an emotional journey that follows a brain scientist who is obsessive about figuring out new technologies to access the consciousness and memories of the brain. His life goes sideways when his family falls victim to a mysterious accident, and  he uses his skills to access memories from his wife’s brain to piece together the mystery of what actually happened to his family and why.

Director Kim Jee-woon's new sci-fi thriller series "Dr. Brain" will be released on Apple TV+ this year, the streaming giant said Monday. The Apple TV+'s first Korean-language project is currently filming in Korea.

 

Based on the popular Korean web comic of the same title, the series revolves around a neuroscientist who tries to access the consciousness and memories of the brain in order to find out the truth behind a terrible tragedy that occurred to his family.

 

Actor Lee Sun-kyun, who rose to fame after starring in Oscar-winning "Parasite" (2019), plays the lead role.

 

Kim, who previously helmed thrillers such as "A Tale of Two Sisters" (2003) and "I Saw the Devil" (2010), said the premise of "Dr. Brain" was interesting to him.

 

"It was interesting to follow the protagonist's journey as he looks into a mysterious accident and unravels what actually happened to his family and why. I think I can offer a unique take on the sci-fi thriller," he said.

 

"I also loved the theme and subjects it explores. The series demonstrates how a character becomes self-aware of the ironies in life by accessing the minds and memories of others and studying how others had perceived him. He also rebuilds a broken relationship."

 

Dr. Brain is being produced for Apple TV+ by Korea-based studio Bound Entertainment along with Kakao Entertainment, Studioplex and Dark Circle Pictures. Kim will serve as an executive producer alongside Ha Yeun-ju, executive producer of Kim's "Illang: The Wolf Brigade" (2018) and director Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" (2017).

Kim also expressed excitement about partnering with Apple TV+. The company has not initiated its service in Korea yet, but is cashing in on Korean original content to benefit from the hallyu boom, or Korean Wave.

 

It is also producing the TV adaptation of the award-winning novel "Pachinko" written by Korean American author Lee Min-jin. The series delves into a story of four generations of a Korean family living in Japan and the U.S. It will star Korean actors Youn Yuh-jung and Lee Min-ho and will feature Korean, Japanese and English dialogue.

 

In February, Netflix announced its plan to spend $500 million on Korean films and TV series this year, with 13 works of Korean-language original content to be produced this year.

 

The surge in investment came after the massive success of the zombie period series "Kingdom" (2019-2020) and monster horror series "Sweet Home" (2020) among the global audience. Original content from Korea has seen concurrent breakout successes across Asia, which triggered the global streaming giant to invest more in Korean productions to grow its business in Asia.

 

Meanwhile, the Walt Disney Company is also gearing up its plan to launch in Korea this year. It recently announced new Asia-Pacific leadership team and confirmed its first original Korean TV series on Disney+, tentatively titled "Our Police Class." K-pop star Kang Daniel is in talks to star in a major role.

After graduating from the School of Drama at the Korea National University of Arts, Lee Sunkyun began his acting career through the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show and TV sitcom Lovers in 2001.  Lee is a versatile actor who can play various roles in different genres and platforms.  He made impressions with some small roles in various popular genre films such as comic, action, and melodrama films.  The year 2007 was when he started to enjoy huge popularity.  In the medical drama Behind the White Tower, he appeared as Choi Doyoung, a young doctor who sticks to his values and beliefs at a general hospital intertwined with chaotic politics, imprinting his image into the audience. After that, Lee played Choi Hansung, a caring character in the romantic comedy series Coffee Prince, which would be recorded in the history of Korean dramas.  Thanks to the character, Lee has been ranked among the top actors.  Since then, the actor has achieved his unique status in the romantic comedy genre by playing an angry chef in the much-talked romantic comedy Pasta (2010). Meanwhile, Lee expanded his scope to the action and noir genre on screen through the crime action film A Hard Day (2014), which was invited to the Midnight Screening section of the Cannes Film Festival.  The actor was well-received for his excellent performance with his unique portrayal of the loser and twerp character Ko Geonsoo, a detective who revealed his true nature to cover up the murder he committed.

 

President Park in Bong Joonho’s PARASITE served as another turning point for Lee, who kept renewing his heyday.  From director Bong’s perspective, Lee Sunkyun was a new card, and it was an unexpected casting for both the actor himself and the audience.  Expanding his signature multi-layered performance, Lee has taken another leap as an actor, performing President Park, who is at the top of the class pyramid created through capitalism that cannot be defined as good or evil.  PARASITE won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG.

 

Lee Sunkyun’s strength can be compared to a dish rich in ingredients.  He expresses a humble and weak side, along with a caring and human side at the same time, the qualities everyone has.  Also, his unique character with an annoyed voice tone serves as a good ingredient for his performance.  In My Mister, which was recently distributed on Netflix and highly praised by Paula Coelho, he played Park Donghoon, who revealed the lonely inner side of a middle-aged man, confirming his status in romantic melodrama to audiences around the world.  His next film is the disaster movie Silence, chosen among a flurry of casting proposals from everywhere, including Hollywood.  Lee depicts Cha Jungwon, who struggles to survive a disaster with his daughter.  Lee Hwajung

Oh you guys <3, I only got into kdramas back in October, and since then I've watched quite a few. Three with LSK: Coffee Prince, My Mister, and Pasta. Also recently watched Parasite, which is a different journey altogether! Netflix here has A Hard Day so once I convince my husband to watch it, we will, even if it's not usually my favorite genre. And I can't wait to watch Miss Korea one day.

 

I joined the Soompi Forum just a few days ago, and I have bittersweet feelings seeing this thread. SO glad you guys are posting (and @widala and @sadiesmith you guys REALLY like LSK ) and glad for all the news about him. But it also makes me sad that there's not more commentary and action on this thread. He's such a talented actor and all-around good, humble guy that I want him to get much more praise and attention.

 

Also, I LOVE that photo of him and the Parasite cast meeting Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt has been my favorite actor for years and years. Fun that a new favorite, LSK, and Brad could be in the same room and generate this pic.

I just finished "This Week, My Wife is Having an Affair." Really enjoyed it! I'd expected a heavier, sadder drama with a name like that, but the tone and pacing were so well-done. I was surprised by how funny it was, too. And the show did a good job making you root for Hyun Woo and Soo Yeon even though she cheated. The chemistry between the writer-PD couple was also super cute.

 

After having fallen down the My Mister rabbit hole, I thought it was interesting to see LSK deal with another affair in TWMWIHAA but with a more open, less reserved personality. I wish Park Dong Hoon could learn some things from PD Hyun Woo about sharing his pain with his close friends :). I wasn't as crazy about Hyun Woo sharing so openly with all the netizens, but I get that that was central to the story and it was neat to see how much his story affected them by the end.

 

What I'm so SO glad about is that even though he had already played a scorned husband in TWMWIHAA, LSK still took on the role of PDH in MM. The idea of playing a husband with a cheating wife in two dramas, back-to-back, perhaps wasn't that attractive to him, but I'm glad he chose to do MM since he wanted to work with the PD. He's so gifted in how he dialed his emotions way back in PDH. It's really like watching two different people.

 

And someone mentioned earlier that he's wearing a similar sweatshirt in his crying scene in MM as his crying scene in TWMWIHAA. So true! Too funny.

Lee Sun Kyun will star in the new movie The Land of Happiness (literal title).

According to JTBC News, Lee Sun Kyun recently joined The Land of Happiness and is coordinating details. As a result, he will work with Jo Jung Suk, who already confirmed his appearance.

The Land of Happiness follows a lawyer who struggles to save a person who is caught up in a case that shook modern history. It’s a new project by Choo Chang Min, who has attracted 12.32 million moviegoers with his movie Masquerade. Lee Sun Kyun will play the soldier who gets involved in a case that shocked modern society.

Since Parasite had swept the world last year, Lee worked on three new projects – films Silence and Killing Romance and Apple TV original series Dr. Brain.

Meanwhile, The Land of Happiness is co-produced by Papa’s Film and Oscar10studio and distributed by NEW. The filming will begin later this year.

Choo Changmin’s new film Land of Happiness (translated title) is beginning to shape up as Yu Jaemyeong has become the latest name to join a cast that also includes actors Lee Sunkyun and Jo Jungsuk.

The film concerns an upright soldier who becomes involved in a case that impacts modern Korean history, as well as the lawyer defending him. Lee Sunkyun will appear as the soldier while Jo was cast as the lawyer. Yu will play another soldier who is also connected to the case.

Director Choo is known for his period drama smash Masquerade (2012) with Lee Byunghun, which welcomed over 12 million viewers in 2012. He last helmed the revenge thriller Seven Years of Night (2018).

Veteran actor Lee Sunkyun is known for A Hard Day (2014) and the Oscar-winning Parasite (2019) as well as the hit series My Mister. Jo Jungsuk appeared in the hit EXIT (2019) and is currently on the small screen in Hospital Playlist 2. Yu Jaemyeong recently appeared alongside Yoo Ahin in the award-winning black comedy Voice of Silence last year.

Land of Happiness is being co-produced by Papas Film and Oscar 10 Studio, while Next Entertainment World is on board as investor and distributor. The film is scheduled to enter production in mid-September.

Just finished reading this entire thread from the beginning!

 

@widala and  @sadiesmith THANK YOU for faithfully posting and for keeping this thread alive for so long. I'm really impressed by how you're able to find news, photos, videos, and BTS on LSK so regularly. @Helena, too!

 

By now, since last December, I've watched:
- Coffee Prince

- My Mister

- Pasta

- Parasite

- A Hard Day

- This Week, My Wife Is Having An Affair

- The Advocate: A Missing Body

- aaannd the last few episodes of My Mister over and over again.

 

Going through many of the interviews and videos on this thread, it again strikes me how humble, self-effacing, and FUNNY Lee Sun-kyun is. He just seems like such a relaxed, normal, likeable guy you want to root for. He's very relatable. And he is so honest in his interviews, talking way openly about previous PDnims and actors he's worked with. Made me laugh sometimes.

 

Watching so many of his films and dramas in such a short time, I'm in awe of his talent and his ability to fully embody such different characters and make them so believable. His subdued, melancholy Park Dong-hoon is very different from his brash, cocky Byun Ho-sung in The Advocate...and I loved him in both roles. Yet they're both so different from Choi Han-sung, too, which I enjoyed.

 

Parasite, A Hard Day, The Advocate are totally not the genres I ever gravitate toward, but because LSK is in them I chose to watch them and wasn't disappointed. In that sense I can credit LSK for stretching my film horizons and pushing me to watch things I normally wouldn't.

 

I'm still hoping to watch more of his better shows and films without having to pay for Viki Pass . Netflix here (I'm in the EU) also has Jo Pil-Ho and A Special Lady, which I haven't watched....but I'm not sure I will given the lukewarm reviews for both of those.

 

Looking forward to watching Dr. Brain when it comes out, although that one, too, is not a genre I'd usually watch.

 

Anyhoo, just wanted to drop a line and say hello again to all who are on this thread!
