Kara (카라, often stylized as KARA) is a popular girl group from South Korea signed with Daesung Entertainment (DSP). The band name Kara comes from the Greek Word "chara" (χαρά, lit. "joy"), which the group interpreted to mean "sweet melody".[1]

Kara started as a four-member group and debuted with their first album The First Blooming in 2007. In 2008, Kim Sunghee departed the group due to parental pressure, and two members were brought in; as such, the group consists of five members: Park Gyuri, Han Seung-yeon, Goo Hara, Nicole and Kang Jiyoung. The five-member band achieved their first number one song with "Honey".[2] Other successful singles include "Pretty Girl", "Wanna", "Mister", and "Lupin." continue

► What does KARA stand for? How did they come up with the name?

--- KARA means "sweet melody" in Greek. When the group got together, they were discussing names. The leader, Park Gyuri, suggested Kara. The members took a strong liking to it, and decided to keep it thereafter.

► What is Park Gyuri's background ethnicity?

--- Gyuri's facial features certainly stand out. There has been no confirmation whether she is full-blooded korean or not.

► Was Jung Nicole born in the states?

--- It is said that Jung Nicole was born in Korea, but moved to the America while she was still a baby. She did not live in California all her life. She was currently residing in California before she went back to Korea to train.

► Did Han Seungyeon live in the US?

--- Yes. In some of her teen years she attended a school in Tenafly, New Jersey.

► I thought Park Gyuri was the one that lived in the US!

--- There has not been any confirmed accounts whether she has or hasn't been in the U.S. It is unlikely that she lived in the America, regardless.

► How long were they trained?

--- Sunghee was trained in 3 years, then other 3 members joined the company & they were trained together in 1 year, and finally debuted under the name "KARA" in March 2007. No official information is revealed but Hara and Jiyoung are believed to have the trainee time of less than half a year.

► Did Sunghee have any activity as a soloist before becoming a KARA member?

--- She has never officially debuted as a soloist. However, Sunghee participated in the OST of the drama "Three leaf clover" (2004) and sang the title song "Then it's done".

► Do they live together?

--- Yes, they share a dorm. Gyuri & Seungyeon are room mates while Nicole, Hara & Jiyoung share another room. Watch their YTN Interview, Selfcam or Zoo Zoo Club series to have a look at their place <3

--- KARA just recently (2010) moved to a new dorm with 4 bedrooms, so 3 members would have a solo room while the other 2 (Hara and Jiyoung) would be sharing.

their song is okay. it's nothing too special at all. i was expecting more from them since they're supposed to be the 2nd finkl. i'm hoping they'll at least sing live for their debut. & it might just be me, but sung hee looks like a mixture of hyori and park bom.

I wish people stop comparing them with finkl, they're kara and not finkl. DSP wants them to be famous as finkl and not the 2nd finkl.

I watched what would load for me from their debut. Their voices are really high! lol They seem promising. I liked the song. They sounded best when singing together (harmonizing), which makes me look forward to hearing more from them. (:

their concept is like kinda kid hip hop.

i feel like the youngest one has a lot of parts O_O

even more than like the other two (other than leader)

and i feel like she needs a bit more practice on vocal

because it sounds like she's having hard time reaching high notes

and she goes off tune a bit more than others.

i don't think they sing that well...except like sung hee or seung yun.

i think kim sung hee's the best singer out of them.

sorry to the leader but she doesn't seem like the leader >_<

i don't know if i like them yet...

Their song "못 지킨 말" reminds me of Juice - Best Days. I think they only revive it. Anyway its a very nice song!!! I love KARA songs!!!

Hmm, they should be compared to FinKL.. DSP used the same formula, so in order to see if it works, you would need to compare. Just as people compare Baby VOX with Baby VOX Re.V. Their song is okay. Somewhat catchy, but they seem to be a step behind in the music. Their debut sounds like something that would've came out from Sugar's 2nd album. Their dancing is in synch though i give them that. Im not sure i really like their concept, but it does give them a distinct look. They aren't as good looking as their previous counterparts.

its a couple of times to like the song. A couple of more performances from them and i might end up liking them.

so far kim sung hee stood out the most out of the entire group. Just her presence and her amazing vocal just make me pay attention to her more. She does look like a mix of park bom and lee hyori and i'd say shes pretty gorgeous ^^.

I thought for a second that the 2nd girl on the picture was the youngest and nicole was like the 2nd oldest or something. She has that mature look and her voice is really good.

In their debut performance, i thought it was pretty good. There were some parts that were out of tune, but hey they just debuted so i'm sure with a couple of more practices and stage appearance they will be more comfortable. I like their "tomboy" image, but if only they had an outfit that was synch with one another. It seems like the stylist didn't know what to do and ended up throwing whatever to put on.

other then that great performance and i'm beginning to like the song ^^.

some of their songs from the album remind me a lot of britney spears - pop-ish sound. i think their album is pretty catchy and good. from the album, it seems as if the girls have pretty stable voices.

Big Bang wrote, composed, and arranged the last two songs for the girls, WOW O.O

Big Bang is sure not just another hip-hop group.
