Can't Play Video Files?

Windows Vista Home Premium

I bought a new laptop with Windows Vista. I can play files but it has some problems in VideoLAN.

I'm not sure if it's Windows Vista or if it's me. It displays like a few seconds of Goong S and after it just shows green, red, blue, black, brown screens where the video should be o_O.

I have xvid installed. Not sure what the problem is =(!

Personally i find that videos work best with WMP and others like vlc and media player classic has a few problems with video and sound.

try and install the k-lite codec pack which includes xvid.

VLC officially does not support Vista at the moment- even if you get all the codecs and such.

There is in fact, a work around.

In VLC, go to Settings> Preferences>Video (category)> Output modules>Direct X. (Click on the "Advanced options" button in the lower right).

Now, uncheck "Use hardware YUV->RGB conversions"

Then click on the "Output modules" category and select "Windows GDI video output" as the Video output module. It should work perfectly fine now. It's even compatible with Aero.
