190612 The Ups and Downs of 10th Year Idols: ‘The Idol of Idols’ - How To Survive Like Shinhwa?

‘7-year Jinx’ or ‘7-year Curse’ is the term now all K-pop fans know. However, while this expression is familiar, it is uncomfortable at the same time. This is because most idol groups that reach the end of contract duration have naturally disbanded as most agencies follow the Fair Trade Commission’s standard of 7-year maximum for contract duration.

 

However, not all idol groups are like that. As the influence of K-pop has been growing recently, there are groups that survive for more than 7 years.

 

Debut in 2014, global idol group GOT7 was positive about renewing its contract in an interview for their mini album ‘Spinning Top’. In the interview, Jinyoung from GOT7 said “Now the ‘7-Year Curse’ is gone right? We never thought of going separate way even once.”

 

If that is the case, how is the status of idol groups that debuted in the early 2010s which now have reached their 10th year this year? SportsQ tried to look at their current status. 

# ‘The Idol of Idols’ - How To Survive Like Shinhwa?

 

 

As if it feels like 10th year idol groups are hard to come by, there is a group that has been maintaining the team and performing for twice more the years.

 

Shinhwa, the boy idol group that SM Entertainment created in 1998 has been writing ‘legend’ in the music industry even till today. Their lifespan has exceeded 7000 days and they will reach 8000 days since debut next year.

 

Whenever idol members receive questions from reporters during showcases or interviews regarding performance duration, the senior group that they always mention like a ‘macro answer’ (t/n: auto-like answer) is ‘Shinhwa.’

 

Consisting of 6 members, the 22-year-old male idol group Shinhwa has been active since debut without a member withdrawal or substitution. Along with group’s activities, Eric and Kim Dong-wan have established their own successful acting career. Jun Jin and Andy have become more prominent and get closer to the public through big and small variety shows. Lee Min-woo, who is in charge of production, and Shin Hye-sung, the main vocalist, have continued their individual activities with their musical talents.

 

Unlike recent idol members, who appeal to certain generations, Shinhwa has been receiving love and attention from a wide range of audience as they continue to expand their range of activities. So, what is Shinhwa’s secret of longevity according to the people who are close to them?

 

An official from Shinhwa, Mr. J, responded with a smile to the reporter’s ‘obvious question’ by saying “Reporters always ask about Shinhwa’s secret of longevity whenever there is news about disbandment of idol groups.” The official also shared, “It is not true that there are fewer conflicts in Shinhwa. According to the members, they have had many fights and conflict of opinions but they said ‘How to resolve and make up after conflicts are important.’  They always have acknowledgement and trust among one another even if they don’t need to express or say anything.”

 

Just like Mr. J’s comments, fans also pointed out that Shinhwa has had quite a numbers of disbandment crises. The first crisis happened in 2003 when the contract with SM Entertainment came to an end. However Shinhwa unitedly got together and moved to a new company (Good Ent.).  In the following year, 2004, they won Daesang for their title song from the 7th official album ‘Brand New’.

 

As the management was de-listed in 2011, Shinhwa experienced another disbandment crisis. However they continue on and established their own company, Shinhwa Company. Until now Shinhwa has been loved steadily due to their policy of prioritizing group’s activities while respecting individual activities.

 

The Shinhwa’s official, Mr. J, also said, “With Eric as the group’s leader, Shinhwa is a team that values the opinions of individual members. Eric does not talk a lot but he pays attention to the members’ stories and respects their individual thoughts. Other members contribute their own opinions and ideas but they tend to prioritize and follow leader Eric’s opinion at crucial moments.”

 

He explained “Lastly, the most important thing is that all members prioritize group’s activities first. They like to say that the 6 of them always fight with one another but they make up with mutual empathy, trust, and thoughtfulness without holding onto any hard feelings.”

 

At Shinhwa’s press conference for their 20th Anniversary Special Album ‘HEART’ in August last year, Kim Dong-wan expressed a light complaint saying “We are not just a group with longevity. Please look at our achievements and results.” However, the symbolism behind the time they have protected the group is more than just the numbers.

 

Even SMAP, a famous Japanese idol group which seemed to last forever, also disbanded after its 25th Anniversary in 2016. Isn’t it all fans’ wish for the idol members, who left strong memories like their first love, to remain idol forever? I wish to see more idol members continue to be active in the entertainment industry with good performances even if they are no longer in a group.

Eric from Shinhwa once again played the role of Mandu-Ric in ‘4 Wheeled Restaurants 3’

 

In the recent episode of tvN ‘4 Wheeled Restaurant Season 3 - America’ broadcast on June 13^th, Bok’s Food that overcame the slump of Tteokgalbi burger with Galbi dumpling was captured.

 

On the same day, Eric who formed a BurgerBro duo with Lee Min-woo put their best effort to sell Tteokgalbi burger. However, he felt disappointed with poorer sales than expected that resulted to more than half of Tteokgalbi patties leftover.

 

Chef Lee Yeon-bok then declared to make Galbi dumpling with the remaining patties from the day before. Eric suggested spring roll but it was rejected immediately. Everyone was concentrating on making dumpling while Eric worked on making dumpling quietly, insinuating the resurrection of ‘Mandu-Ric’ that gathered attention.

 

The next day, Eric prepared for the opening of food truck at the new location, foretelling the performance as Mandu-Ric, with his frying skill which became more proficient. Particularly, he showed amazing speed in supplying dumplings, which was given out as soon as order was made.

 

 

Eric, who earned many nicknames such as Yangpa-Ric, Mandu-Ric, E-Rabbit while performing as Chef Lee Yeon-bok’s disciple in ‘4 Wheeled Restaurants 3’, made a fancy return as ‘Mandu-Ric’ with Galbi Mandu in this episode. Expectation towards Eric’s new sides for the remaining episodes is getting amplified.

The episode of tvN ‘4 Wheeled Restaurants 3’ broadcast on June 20th captured Bokvengers (Lee Yeon-bok, Shinhwa’s Eric, Heo Kyung-hwan, Lee Min-woo, John Park) continuing its 9^th sale at UN Plaza in front of San Francisco City Hall.

 

When lunch time came, many customers including government office staffs started to gather. Lee Yeon-bok’s seafood rice special and Galbi mandu quickly became the best sellers. Customers appreciated as they said “This is the proper meal”, “I would like to eat more in future”, “It is really delicious.” In particular, orders for Galbi mandu continued to rise to the point that it was hard to cover the follow up.

 

During the sale at Bok’s Food, Eric checked the rice cooker and informed everyone, “Now, there is only one left.’ Lee Yeon-bok looked surprised. He did not realize rice was running out due to the constant influx of customers as he continued receiving orders.

 

As it took time to cook the rice, John Park approached the customer, apologized and offered Galbi mandu for free. The customer got the refund for the seafood rice and left without feeling offended due to the courteous apology. After that, team Lee Yeon-bok ended the seafood rice order and finished Day 9 as they sold the last order of Galbi dumpling.

 

The night before their final business day, members decided to gather at 8PM to prepare ingredients for their final business day. But John Park did not appear at 8AM. He set up alarm before he went to sleep, but he fell deep into his sleep and could not hear the alarm going off.

 

 

 Heo Kyung-hwan and Eric teased, “There is no John even though this is the last preparation. This is the time for John to be reincarnated.” and “There should be some alarm sound now.”

 

Members understood that John Park overslept due to fatigue. Heo Kyung-hwan blabbered, “John Park went to Korea?” Minwoo said, “It is hard. Before the sale started, they were given a mission. The quest was an opportunity to double the donation amount from the profit earned. Out of 10 missions so far, they failed Day-4 & 8 and succeeded 7 out of 10 missions.  Their last quest title was ‘Achieving The Best Sales”. Donation amount would be double if they completed the mission successfully. The members got motivated as they shouted “Let’s make the biggest sales today.”

 

Team Lee Yeon-bok prepared for their last sales by preparing meat and vegetables as the new menu was Jjamppong, Jjajangmyeon, and Tangsuyuk.

 

Bok’s Food’s last stage is ‘Fort Mason,’ the largest food truck gathering of its kind in the United States. It was a naval base camp, but now it is transformed into a Center for Arts & Culture for residents. Every Friday evening, the parking space transforms into food trucks galore.

 

On the day, there was a great crowd at the Food truck of Lee Yeon-bok. People queued in advance even before it was open. Orders piled up within a minute after the opening. Even Lee Yeon-bok, who has been in ‘4 Wheeled Restaurants’ series before, was astonished while saying, “It is the first time to be in this kind of place. This is really the biggest ever crowd and most challenging from all the places that we have been to.” Eric and Heo Kyung-hwan said, “We are working like machines.” Lee Yeon-bok told Lee Min-woo, who was in charge of boiling noodles, to “boil noodles as much as possible. I’ll keep on frying.” 

 

Especially Eric, who not only treated the customer with fluent English skills and kind smiles, but also handled the order slips in the truck skilfully. He managed both the food truck and the hall perfectly.

Eric has been wearing that neon green cap numerous times, as well as the the MMM tshirt that Hyemi is wearing.  The MMM tshirt is way back n 2016 when Oh Hae Young Again crew went for their reward trip in Thailand   It looks quite loose on her but she obviously went for the comfy look... I hope to hear his decision soon too.  Though, I feel like they are both accepting it cuz it's been more than 3 weeks since the news first came out.  To be honest, I wish to see him in a brand new drama but I'm also very curious what they'd do for this QSS 2.0, especially getting the whole original gang together (from main leads, to PD and writer...) that's very rare 

 

I also heard that the production is auditing for this drama so it looks like it's a go! Now we just need confirmation news

 

In the mean while, I'm happy to see Eric on TV through variety shows... with 4 Wheeled Restaurant's this Thursday and MBC's The Barber of Seville starting next Thursday, we're going to see Eric on TV for almost 6 whole months... That's really rare ahahaha  and then the drama?  *fingers crossed*

Here were Eric and Hyemi with Eric's mother at a church in 2018, also on July 1st to support Katie (Eric's niece) performing for GIM.  The way Eric called Katie up and how he embraced her was just sweet and heart warming.    It's n wonder the kids adore their samchon so much.
