[drama 2007] White Tower [ 하얀 거탑]

White Tower finished in So Cal a week ago. It only had subtitles since ep 5 or 6 so I was only really able to follow since then but I agree that this may the best drama I have seen. Even without the subs I watched because if KMM who impressed me in Beauty Beyond Expression/ More Beautiful that a Flower. That was the show that got me interested in Asian Dramas. I also really liked him in Yi Soon Shin and even in Bad Family. I think he chose his roles well and each let him show his range of acting ability. White Tower left me in shock. They wrapped it up to quickly. I know that cancer is a killer disease but it was almost beyond belief that it took him out so quickly and after all wasn't th a top cancer surgeon and wouldn't know that he was seriously ill. I guess he was distracted by the trial just as in my opinion he was seriously distracted by those were trying to hurt him and block him from realizing his potential as the brilliant surgeon he was. He had ambition yes and in that respect he reminded me of Dr. Benton, the surgical resident portrayed by Eric La Salle in early seasons ER who just simply want tho learn and try as much as he could to be the best. Both had to struggle and fight for every thing and neither had much money for education only their determined brilliance got them through.

I thought it was so touching how much his residents really loved Dr. Jang and how they cared for him when they realized he was sick. They really respected him. They even knew hem well enough to anticipate his thoroughness in asking for details of his condition. I did think it was wrong for the senior doctors not to tell Dr. Jang the seriousness of his condition. I didn't understand why they felt they had to keep the truth from him. Someone previously mentioned two letters left by Dr. Jang but I only saw the one about leaving his body to science. Typical of Dr. Jang until the end.

Well this is my first post and it turns out to be a long one but the show really left and impression. I look forward to the next KMM drama or movie.

me too it left me shocked at the turn of events.. everything happened so fast. that was why i didnt really understand how he got the disease in the first place.

nontheless, the drama was great. acting was superb. they definitely deserved the awards especially myungmin!

Finished watching episode 20 last night. Wow.

I watched the series to see who this poseur was who beat Song Il Guk for the best actor award. I'll admit that I was bitter.

There was so much about this series that frustrated me. What I realized in the end though, like with the other kdramas I've watched, I'm far more drawn to the characters than the realism of the story. I was so moved by Jang's illness and how he handled it. I cried for the last half hour of the episode - best moment - where Jang was dreaming he was operating again. It was so telling of the character. His life was in that operating room. It was the place where he felt most confident, whole, beautiful, loved and flawless. He was good and he knew it, he saved people's lives, his team loved him, the students admired him, even the other staff who despised him had to admit his gift. I saw all that in his face while he imagined the surgery, as he watched the students stand for him before he began, it was where Jang was at his best. Then he awoke and his hands started to tremble and his reality now was that he was going to die.

And I understood his refusal in the end to repent - in his mind his operation was flawless - he had nothing to apologize for. We even heard on trial that the small mark that indicated cancer in the man's lungs was not of a sufficient size to retest for cancer, so still, in his mind, he did the absolute best he could have done under the circumstances. He died absolutely certain he had done the best he could. Personally, if he had stuck to that I think he would not have been convicted of malpractice. It got all complicated and convoluted when he started to lie about it and forced others to do the same. I understood it, (I didn't support it, but I understood it) - it was all about the ends justifying the means - he had to make the hospital more successful and he had to become more successful and if he had to perjure himself and force others to do the same, it didn't matter. Not an admirable trait at all. But if I may, the apple didn't really fall far from the tree, did it? It seems to me that the entire hospital had no problem manipulating data to serve its own ends - lying to Jang about his illness and the extent of his disease - changed his charts, doctored x-rays and cat scans, handed him tissue samples from another patient, encouraged those around him to lie, even Dr. I'll Always Take The Moral High Ground Choi lied to his friend when Jang looked at him right in the face and demanded the truth. Jang wasn't the only liar in the series.

KMM totally deserved the best actor award, far and away over Song Il Guk. It was an exquisite performance and one I'm likely to remember for a long time.

thank you for taking the time to experience white tower. i rem i cant stopped crying at the last two esp . the raw emotion gripped me ..watching and witnessing dr jang in his last moment . kim myun min performance was brilliant

Hi! I haven't watched this drama, but I just saw that its playing on AZN and I just caught an episode of it and was impressed. I'm going to watch and see how i like it, it seems like people were really bowled over by the performances!

Anyway, if anyone is looking to watch it, its playing on AZN nowadays, english subbed, from 9:30pm - 11pm (central time), right after JuMong. I'm hoping the whole show will be subbed. Just wanted to pass the info!

Started watching this weekend...

Mostly true to real life... that is life in medical field...

Although I don't think it's that competitive in US (to become chief of surgeon)...

I am in medical field... don't claim to know everything that goes on behind the scene in selecting the chief of surgeon...

But, I don't think it's that complicated... at least not where I work... I do work at one of the largest university hospitals in US...

Anyhow, I started replying because this particular actor caught my attention...

Dr Yum (Yum Dong Il), I think he is first year surgical resident...

Actor's real name is Kee Tae Young (기태영)...

Birthdate: 12/9/78...

올해 초 국민적 관심 속에 메디컬 드라마의 새로운 지평을 열었다고 평가받은 MBC 드라마 '하얀거탑'이 감독판으로 다시 한 번 안방극장을 찾는다.

케이블채널 tvN은 오는 20일부터 매주 월요일부터 금요일까지 오후1시10분부터 '하얀거탑' 감독판을 방영한다.

tvN서 방송될 '하얀거탑-감독판'은 시간상 편집됐던 부분들이 새롭게 포함되면서 전체적인 극의 전개가 자연스러워졌다. 또 음악과 새로운 편집 작업으로 극의 완성도를 높였다.

무엇보다 네티즌들이 아쉬운 점으로 꼽았던 드라마 후반 재판 장면도 재편집을 통해 방송된다. 때문에 20부작에는 변함이 없지만 각 회별 러닝 타임이 조금씩 변경될 예정이다.
