Hwang Jungmin Returns to the Top of the Charts

by Pierce Conran | Aug 23, 2021

HOSTAGE: MISSING CELEBRITY Leads the Way as Local Films Command the Market

spacer.png

Major local releases continued to lead the way at the summer box office as the Korean industry claimed 87% of sales over the past weekend. Admissions also remained high relative to the rest of the year, down a fraction from last weekend’s total with 1.16 million sales counted.

Box office titan Hwang Jungmin returned to the top of the charts one year after DELIVER US FROM EVIL with the new action-thriller Hostage: Missing Celebrity. A remake of the Chinese film Saving Mr. Wu, and the second film from Ryoo Seungwan’s production company Filmmaker R & K this summer, the Pil Gamsung debut opened with 454,000 sales (USD 3.92 million) over the weekend, with a total to 639,000 entries (USD 5.4 million) recorded over its first five days in theaters.

Last week’s champ, the disaster comedy Sinkhole, fell 50%, welcoming 327,000 viewers (USD 2.77 million) during its sophomore weekend. To date, the film has brought in 1.66 million spectators (USD 13.88 million).

Ryoo Seungwan’s Escape from Mogadishu remained a threat on the charts, slowing just 36% as it sold 222,000 tickets (USD 1.18 million) over the course of its fourth weekend. After just under a month on the charts, the film has accumulated 2.78 million admissions (USD 22.86 million) and is hot on the tail of the year’s biggest hit Black Widow, which has sold just under three million tickets.

Opening in fourth place was M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film Old, which filled 52,000 seats (USD 448,000) over the weekend, with 85,000 sales (USD 714,000) counted over its first five days.

Last week’s new Hollywood entry Free Guy was down 66%, selling 36,000 tickets (USD 311,000) in fifth place. To date, the Ryan Reynolds vehicle has brought in 252,000 viewers (USD 2.18 million).

All three of the top local releases should remain strong this coming week, while a new homegrown title, the horror film GUIMOON: The Lightless Door with Kim Kangwoo, is also poised to open high on the charts.

———Hope all 3 films will cross their break-even points: Mogadishu (3 million admissions), Sinkhole (2 million), Hostage (2 million).——

HOSTAGE: MISSING CELEBRITY’s Director Pil Gamseong Blurs the Boundary Between Reality and Fiction

by Jung Silo | Aug 24, 2021

“Actor Hwang Jungmin and character Hwang Jungmin created synergy in this story”

spacer.png

The film Hostage: Missing Celebrity is a fictional action thriller that realistically depicts the unprecedented abduction of the famous actor Hwang Jungmin (played by Hwang Jungmin) on the streets of Korea. Director Pil Gamseong, who first set foot in the film industry as a member of the production team of Director Kim Sungsoo's Musa-The Warrior (2001), finally made his feature debut in 20 years with Hostage: Missing Celebrity. Having Hwang Jungmin play himself makes the story’s set-up attractive. In this film, director Pil Gamseong utilizes the images the actor has in real life and interestingly blurs the border between reality and fiction. The previous films Hwang was in and his famous lines will be mentioned in the film, which is something the viewers can look out for and enjoy. We met with Pil Gamseong who says he hopes Hostage: Missing celebrity will be a fun and thrilling ride, just like a roller coaster.

Hostage: Missing Celebrity is known to be a remake of the Chinese movie, Saving Mr. Wu (2015), but the plot and the ending seem quite different.
Actually, I came across this subject matter through a documentary film depicting a true story that happened in China. The story was about an actor being abducted then rescued in a day. I wondered how the actor would have reacted in the extreme situation of being abducted. I thought one might be able to use his acting skills to deceive the captors if he is an actor. That was the starting point of Hostage: Missing Celebrity. While researching, I found out that the story was already made into a movie called Saving Mr. Wu. It spoiled my fun a bit, but I thought it was still worth making because what Saving Mr. Wu pursued seemed different from what I wanted to direct. Saving Mr. Wu is a movie about how they rescued Mr. Wu, while in Hostage: Missing Celebrity, the actor escapes on his own. Since the flow of the story is quite different, I wasn’t particularly conscious of Saving Mr. Wu.

The concept of having actor Hwang Jungmin play the character Hwang Jungmin is very interesting, I think.
A thriller about an abduction is not new, so the issue for me was to find something new to bring to the table. While thinking about this, I came up with the idea of using the actor's real name and characterizing it. I was convinced that the stories the audience knows of the real actor and the story of the character Hwang Jungmin interprets in the movie would create a synergy. The film could not have been possible if the actor did not agree with the setting, but he accepted it willingly. I was even encouraged when Hwang enthusiastically shared his opinions.

What did you emphasize on the most while directing?
In how realistic it feels. When we say that a film is about Hwang Jungmin getting abducted, there was much room for it to be taken as a comedy. So it had to be realistic in order for the audience to get immersed in it. That’s why I researched and read the memoirs of abduction victims as well as information on abductors. I even met with the police to ask for advice on the psychology of abductors.

Casting seems like the most important aspect of the film due to the concept. The tone of the movie could completely change depending on the actor playing the role. Did you have Hwang Jungmin in your mind from the beginning?
When I was writing the script, I thought of Hwang Jungmin without hesitation. In this movie, the main character is tied to a chair for the most part. Therefore, I needed an actor who could show a panorama of spectacular emotions using just his upper body. When I thought about who could pull that off, actor Hwang Jungmin came to mind. Another reason why I chose him is because of his famous lines in other movies. Including Hwang Jungmin's popular lines such as “Hey, Brother” and “Bring it on, bring it on” (Famous lines from New World) in the film could ease the tension and reduce fatigue.

spacer.png

The more we know about Actor Hwang Jungmin and his works, the more interesting Hostage: Missing Celebrity becomes. On the other hand, it may not be so easy for international audiences to receive the film as you have intended it.
That’s a good point. I made a different version for the Cannes Film Festival, and I proofread the English subtitles at that time. I could see the problem you just mentioned at that point. For example, when translating a line like, “I’ll be merciful and let you live” into English, the nuance didn't translate perfectly, and it sounded very awkward. But I think international audiences are quick to catch on. When we watch foreign movies, we also understand that country’s culture and the background of the film easily. In that sense, I think foreign audiences will catch these points in Hostage: Missing Celebrity, too.

Given that the actor plays himself, your film reminds us of Director Lee Jyong's The Actresses (2009) and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich (1999). For an actor, acting themselves and acting to look realistic are two different things. What kind of thoughts did you put into that matter?
I was aware that having the film go back and forth between reality and fiction could become dangerous like a double-edged sword. The actor also thought hard about it. Fortunately, Hwang Jungmin did a great job in the part, walking cleverly and balanced on the tightrope. For example, when Hwang and the captors bump into each other for the first time at a convenience store in the movie, they pick up a fight. But in the original script, Hwang Jungmin avoids the rude captors while saying, “Yes, sir.” When Hwang read this, he said, “If this was me, I’d just swear right away.” Such suggestions were reflected in the film if they did not affect the flow of the story, and I believe those changes made the movie more realistic.

You chose new faces to act the five captors who play crucial roles in the film. Was this something you decided while building these characters?
If a well-known actor was cast to play a character with a different name, I thought it would break the audience’s concentration since Hwang Jungmin plays himself. One would ask, “Hwang Jungmin is playing himself, so why isn’t Brad Pitt playing Brad Pitt?” That’s why I cast new faces for the captors. And since I wanted Hostage: Missing Celebrity to be a tight, neat, and concise film, I didn’t give any other purposes for the abduction other than money. I didn’t think it would be helpful for the flow of the film if I dealt with the stories of the captors in depth.

Let me ask you a light question now. Which Hollywood actor would you like to abduct if you had the chance to expand Hostage: Missing Celebrity into a global project?
It's a light question, but the hardest to answer. Um... Actor Don Lee? Lee entered Hollywood with Marvel's The Eternals, and I think I can make many interesting scenes if he’s the one getting abducted.

You started working in the movie industry as a staff member of the production team for Musa-The Warrior in 2001. You’ve been in the industry for quite a time, and you were finally able to debut as a director with Hostage: Missing Celebrity 20 years later. What do you think is the most important thing when trying to become a director in Korea?
I was offered to direct a movie at an early age, so I thought I would become a director soon. However, the films I were working on dropped repeatedly. I didn't know why things weren’t working out at first and became skeptical about making films. Then I concluded that my scripts had failed to persuade the actors and investors. After that, I wrote while thinking that only my scripts could save me. That’s how Hostage: Missing Celebrity was born. So if you ask me what's important when trying to become a director in Korea, a good script is the answer! I think you can persuade anybody if you have a solid story.

The film industry all around the world is suffering not only because of COVID-19, but because of growing streaming services. How do you feel about releasing your first feature film in this situation?
We never expected the pandemic to break out while we were planning, preparing, and shooting Hostage: Missing Celebrity. The OTT (over-the-top media service) business has shown great progress due to the pandemic, so we are in a completely different situation than before we started preparing for Hostage: Missing Celebrity. However, I think it is still a good experience to release a feature film in this situation. I noticed how well Escape from Mogadishu is performing right now in theaters despite the difficult conditions, and I became confident again thinking that the audience will go to the theaters if there is a good movie. I also believe theaters will continue to live on. I hope Hostage: Missing Celebrity can play a part in this trend. Since it’s an unpredictable roller coaster-like movie, I recommend you to go to a theater to watch it.

[A Look Back on Korea's 'Cheonman Movie' #5] 'Veteran'

by Ra Hwak Jin / Lee Hyo Yoon | 2021-08-29

[Episode 5] Veteran (2015, Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan)

spacer.png

▲ This photo shows the poster of the film "Veteran." (Yonhap)

“Veteran,” a detective-action film released in August 2015, is the 5th biggest hit of all Korean movies having attracted 13.41 million audiences. The film, which was produced aiming for popularity from the beginning, was even introduced as “My most entertaining production of all,” by its director Ryoo Seung-wan. But the message it carried depicting a rich man who acts as if he is on top of a county’s law, cannot be considered casual.

The beginning scene of catching the fraud luxury car sellers does not match with the overall plot but it well shows director Ryoo’s specialty in actions. In the scene where detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) and Jo Tae-oh (Yoo Ah-in) 3rd generation of a rich family first meet, actor Yoo’s insane acting clenches the hearts of the watchers. The two’s tense relationship continues until the end of the film making the watchers feel constantly nervous.

The film was remade into “Big Shot” (2019) in China, recording a hit in the country earning 380 million yuan (about 69 billion won).

◇ "Movie by the actors, for the actors and of the actors"

“It is a movie by the actors, for the actors and of the actors,” commented the director on a press interview in 2015 facing the film’s release.

A number of gemlike Korean-film actors emitted their talents through the film. Hwang who took the role of the veteran detective Seo Do-cheol unyielding to money and power, completes his character saying “What we don’t have is the money, not the pride!” to his fellow police who seemed to have accepted bribes from a rich family.

Yoo who played as an arrogant young man with a rich-family background clashing against detective Seo, shows the characteristics of the ‘bad guy’ who tries to solve everything with money by saying, “Think you’ll be able to cope with the consequences of doing this to me?”

The actor gives off a peculiar sense of power and atmosphere with the sniffing to show that the character was a drug addict. Many pick the scene of Yoo making a creepy joke-ish warning saying “Ridiculous” using the term “millstone handle” as the most impressive moment.

Former top model Jang Yoon-ju debuted to the movie scene with the film. She catches the eyes from the first scene in which she appears in the screen with Hwang. She has practiced her acting skills appearing in her second film “Three Sisters” which is her return to the screens in 6 years, at the start of this year.

Also the actors for the sub-characters, Yoo Hae-jin, Oh Dal-su, Jung Woong-in, Cheon ho-jin, Jung Man-sik, Yoo In-young, Kim Eung-soo, Song Young-chang, Bae Seong-woo and, Lee Dong-hwi, all played fantastically for their roles.

For those who are watching this film now, we recommend them to pay attention to the two actors who were nameless at the time of its release, Park So-dam and Uhm Tae-goo. Although they don’t make a long appearance, their presences definitely stand out in the scenes. Park and Uhm later rises to stardom with “Parasite” and Netflix original film “Night in Paradise” respectively.

◇ Director Ryoo Seoung-wan who adds times to

Director Ryoo who has showed gripping action films such as “Arahan” (2004), “The City of Violence” (2006), “Dachimawa Lee” (2008) has widened his spectrum of eras reflected in his productions through “The Unjust” (2010), “The Berlin File” (2013). “Veteran” has received positive responses both in popularity and from the critics for making optimal balance between action and reflection of the times.

However, his later 2017-production “Gunhamdo / Battleship Island” was criticized for marketing strategies focused on the watchers’ patriotism for the truth of Gunhamdo rather than his specialty, actions. It was also harshly rated regarding with historical truths.

The director has recently produced and released “Escape from Mogadishu” even in the situation where consumers are reluctant to visit the movies due to the COVID-19 infection. The film has made a tremendous hit accumulating 3 million audiences and ranked this year’s best film until now.

◇ Reality more movie-like than the movie

In the film, Jo Tae-oh (Yoo) brings a cargo driver (Jung) protesting in front of his company claiming for his wage to his office and gives him the money in turn of getting brutally beaten up.

The scene was based on a similar real event. In 2010, Choi Cheol-won, head of M&M and cousin of chairman Chey Tae-won of SK Group, called in tank truck driver who made a one-man protest in front of the SK headquarters saying that the company would not legally continue his employment during its merger with another firm. Choi Cheol-won then beat up the driver with a baseball bat and fists later compensating with 20 million won.

He was sentenced to prison for 1 year and 6 months in first trial but was added with 3 years of suspension in second trial and could get away with his crime.

He has gained attention once again for being elected as the 24th chairman of Korea Ice Hockey Association in December 2020. Korea Sport & Olympic Committee, the superior organization of the association has disapproved the election due to Choi’s criminal record. He is undergoing a legal dispute regarding the disapproval.

Action thriller film “Hostage: Missing Celebrity” continues to top the box office two weeks after premiering on Aug. 18, according to the Korean Film Council’s Korea Box Office Information System on Monday.

“Hostage” sold over 280 thousand tickets from Friday to Sunday, attracting more than 1.1 million moviegoers in total.

Disaster comedy “Sinkhole” is in second place and “Escape From Mogadishu,” which recently surpassed the ticket sales for “Black Widow," is in third.

HOSTAGE: MISSING CELEBRITY Holds on to Top Spot, GUIMOON Debuts at No. 4

by Pierce Conran | Aug 31, 2021

ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU Becomes Top-Grossing Film of the Year

spacer.png

With no hot new release driving sales, business slowed about 30% over the past weekend, with 768,000 admissions recorded over the last weekend in August. Local holdovers led the way and kept the local market share high at 87%.

The Hwang Jungmin vehicle Hostage: Missing Celebrity remained in the top spot, clinching 285,000 sales (USD 2.48 million) as it slowed a slight 37% after its debut last week. The film has so far welcomed 1.14 million viewers (USD 9.6 million) but though it has been well-received, strong competition is likely to hamper its chances of reaching another major box office milestone.

Also faring well was Sinkhole, which was down 45% in second place. The disaster comedy added 180,000 spectators (USD 1.55 million) over the weekend and has sold 1.98 million tickets (USD 16.68 million) to date.

Ryoo Seungwan’s had a stellar 28% hold during its fifth weekend on the charts. The acclaimed action film added 160,000 entries to its haul (USD 1.37 million), which has now reached 3.06 million admissions (USD 25.18 million). The film overtook Black Widow over the weekend to become the most well-attended film at the Korean box office this year.

Debuting in fourth place was the local horror title GUIMOON: THE Lightless Door with Kim Kangwoo. The film kicked off its run with 40,000 sales (USD 330,000) over the weekend and has filled a total of 71,000 seats (USD 536,000) over its first five days in theaters.

Down 35% was the Hollywood action film Free Guy, which added 23,000 viewers (USD 210,000) during its third weekend. The film has now reached 292,000 spectators (USD 2.54 million).

The reign of local dominance this summer is set to come to an end this week with the launch of the latest Marvel film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which is currently enjoying a comfortable lead atop the reservations chart.

Local Films Fill Top Four Korea Box Office Places at COVID-Struck Weekend

By Patrick Frater | August 29, 2021

“Hostage: Missing Celebrity” held on to top spot at the South Korean box office as new release “Guimoon: The Lightless Door” gave local films the top four chart places over the weekend. But business is being held back by new health measures in the Greater Seoul area that were reintroduced last week.

“Hostage,” starring Hwang Jung-min, was a comfortable winner with a 38% market share, ahead of another holdover “Sinkhole” with 24%, according to data from the Kobis data service operated by the Korean Film Council.

“Hostage” earned $2.48 million on its second weekend of release, down 38% from its debut. Since its Aug. 18. launch it has accumulated $9.59 million.

“Sinkhole” earned $1.55 million on its third weekend. Since its Aug. 11 start in cinemas, it has built a cumulative total of $16.7 million.

“Escape From Mogadishu” held on to third place with a 20% market share and a $1.37 million weekend haul. Since its July 28 debut in Korean theaters it has amassed $25.1 million. That makes it the second highest grossing film of the year behind “Black Widow.” In terms of spectators and ticket sales, however, “Mogadishu” is now the most watched movie of the year in Korea, with 3.07 million spectators.

In terms of year-to-date aggregates, “Sinkhole” is now the sixth ranking film of 2021 in Korea. “Hostage” is already up to eighth place.

“Guimoon” scared up fourth place over the weekend with a $330,000 score earned from 692 screens. In the five days since its Aug. 25 release, it has earned $536,000. It is the story of a professor and some of his students who enter a closed down training center where a number of mysterious deaths previously occurred. The film was distributed by CJ Entertainment and benefited from some presentations in 4DX (moving chairs and atmospheric effects) and ScreenX (which makes use of a cinema’s side walls for a 270 degree show).

“Free Guy” held on to fifth place and was the top-scoring foreign title of the weekend, with $209,000. Since its Aug. 11 debut, it has accumulated $2.54 million.

While the return to chart dominance for so many local films is a fillip for the Korean production sector, the weekend was one of the weakest of the summer. Aggregate national box office was $6.68 million, compared with $9.82 million a week earlier. The downturn reflected the re-imposition of new social distancing measures intended to limit the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Kang Hye-jung, head producer "'Mogadishu'·'Hostage' released in hard times...Heart-touching moment"

SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- Korean films have saved the movies from crisis amid the COVID-19 pandemic this summer.

Produced by production company Filmmaker R&K “Escape from Mogadishu” directed by Ryu Seung-wan and “Hostage” starring veteran actor Hwang Jung-min hit the theaters in July and August with 3 weeks in between.

Although the films have been a success attracting 3 million and 1 million audiences respectively, the company had a lot of worries until their releases.

“It is too unfortunate to call this a hit,” said Kang Hye-jung who has lead the company with her husband, director Ryu Seung-wan for 17 years. The head producer exclaimed her mix of happiness and regret on an online interview Tuesday.

“Mogadishu” beat Marvel production “Black Widow” and recorded this year’s most views. “Hostage” also showed a brilliant score ranking No. 8 on this year’s Box Office.

But the high scores seem humble compared to that of before the COVID-19 when there were a million audiences watching a film in a day and when there hit movies attracting 10 million audiences.

“Most production companies will be planning to release their productions when the pandemic settles down, regardless of the films’ scales,” said Kang.

“Neither have I thought that the two films would have to struggle against the coronavirus.”

“There was the time we waited for the release after finishing all production process. Also, the distributions companies were confident of the films and wanted to drop them in the summer season. We put our heads together about whether it would be more effective to put off the release dates before final decision. Fortunately the two productions’ genres didn’t clash so we dropped them consecutively,” explained the head of Filmmaker R&K.

The films’ break-even points are 3.5 million audiences for “Mogadishu” and 1.7~1.8 million audiences for “Hostage”. If the streak continues throughout the Chuseok holidays, they would be able avoid loss.

“Mogadishu” which used about 20 billion won for production, has been promised half of the cost by Korean Theater Organization (translated).

Kang shook her head saying that the movies these days is an ‘unimaginable market.’ She, at the same time, expressed her touched heart thanks to the theater visitors also adding her proudness for Korean movies’ unique talent of comforting the Korean watchers.

“I really feel so moved when thinking of the audiences who came to see the two films. They overcame their fear-hurdles (about the risk of infection) to visit the movies. Personally, it is such a heart-touching moment. I think I am emotionally compensated for the physical sadness over the popularity. I feel sincere happiness having communicated with the audiences regardless of the score.”

She also bragged about the two films’ attractiveness. “Mogadishu” features the most dramatic event of all Korean history and they have put their ever-most effort into the movie. Kang explained that “Hostage,” is a perfect thriller that fully actor Hwang’s charms.

As the film was designed for the theaters from the beginning, the company had no intentions of releasing the productions on OTT platforms. That is because the sense of immersion in the theaters with a big screen and sound effects differ from that in an ordinary house. In particular, as “Hostage” was the debut production of director Pil Gam-seong, she wanted to let him hit the theaters first.

Although, her company started mainly with director Ryu’s productions, they are putting effort into discovering new-faces as well. Also their genres diversified from action to comedy “Dachimawa Lee,” horror “Savaha,” disaster comedy “Exit” and romance “On Your Wedding Day.”

“We went through all kinds of hardships. We think that what really matters is the story we want to portray not the scale,” said Kang.

“We have grown from our difficult times. The hardships became a turning point for the company’s system, which was dependent on director Ryu, to expand our producers and search for new directors.”

Kang said she wanted to give the audiences ‘the faith that the film is worth watching.’ She said that she and her crews endlessly think to create films not shameful when launched to the market.

“Our lives have changed a lot due to the COVID-19 infection. We must come up with a big picture of how culture will be consumed. But as a film producer I stay the same; raise the hurdle, the level of my productions. I believe we can produce movies that can survive if we can give the faith, ‘That movie is definitely worth watching in the theater.’  (END)

Hwang Jungmin and Jeon Doyeon reunite in Kill Boksoon

by Pierce Conran | Dec 21, 2021

SUL Kyunggu, KOO Kyohwan and E Som to Co-Star in in BYUN Sunghyun’s Netflix Debut

17 years after You Are My Sunshine (2005), Hwang Jungmin and Jeon Doyeon are set to reunite in the film Kill Boksoon (literal title), a Netflix original. From The Merciless (2017) director Byun Sunghyun, the project will also feature Sul Kyunggu, Koo Kyohwan, and E Som. The streaming feature will follow the story of a female killer, and production is set to get underway by the end of the year.

One of Korea’s most beloved actors, Hwang Jungmin has led box office smashes such as Ode to My Father (2014), Veteran (2015), The Wailing (2016), and last summer’s DELIVER US FROM EVIL (2020). Kill Boksoon is the second Netflix project Hwang has signed on to, following the Yoon Jongbin series Suriname, which is currently in production in the Dominican Republic. Hwang appeared in theaters this summer in the action-thriller Hostage: Missing Celebrity, in which he played himself.

One of Korea’s most popular screen actresses since the late 1990s, Jeon Doyeon is known for Happy End (1999), Untold Scandal (2003), and The Housemaid (2010). She also won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 for Lee Changdong’s Secret Sunshine. This year she was seen on the small screen in the Hur Jinsho drama Lost and will next appear in the disaster film Emergency Declaration, which premiered at Cannes during the summer.

Co-star Sul Kyunggu has also acted with Jeon before, in I Wish I Had a Wife (2001) and Birthday (2019). E Som is known for Microhabitat (2018) and the drama Taxi Driver, and Koo Kyohwan is a rising name known for Peninsula (2020) and the Netflix series D.P..

The project will be Director Byun’s fifth, following his Cannes-invited gangster drama The Merciless, and the upcoming election drama Kingmaker, both of which also feature Sul.
