'Veteran' to be shown to LAPD ahead of N. America release

SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Yonhap) -- Director Ryoo Seung-wan will showcase his action thriller "Veteran" to Los Angeles police ahead of its North American release, the movie's distributor said Wednesday.

A special premiere inviting officers at the L.A. Police Department (LAPD) and their families will take place next Wednesday, CJ Entertainment said, adding Ryoo will join them.

In "Veteran," a detective delves into the mysterious death of a truck driver and enters into a cat-and-mouse game with an arrogant heir of a rich family in the process.

The distributor also said Ryoo will attend the Toronto International Film Festival, where his film has been invited, on Sunday. The director is scheduled to hold a press conference and a premiere on Sept. 17.

"The invitation to Toronto has raised anticipation for its North American release," Lee Yoo-min, a team manager in CJ E&M's film business department, said. "Ryoo also has a strong following among the Korean-American community. We expect the film to be a hit because it covers the universal theme of justice."

The film was watched by more than 12 million movie-goers in South Korea and is the ninth best-selling film of all time here.

"Veteran" is set to open at 46 theaters in North America, including in New York, Chicago, Vancouver and Toronto.

Director Ryoo Seung-wan mulls sequel to ‘Veteran’

“We’re currently researching what social issues the public is interested in and what kind of individual they are curious to know more about,” Ryoo told reporters,

The high-flying “Veteran” portrayed a seasoned investigator’s struggle and cathartic victory in uncovering criminal acts of a corrupt corporate heir.

Kang Hye-jeong, CEO of Filmmaker R&K, said it would take two to three years to make the sequel. “We’re brainstorming on various aspects to find a bigger villain than Jo Tae-oh,” she said, referring to the corrupt millionaire character played by actor Yoo Ah-in.

Actor Hwang Jung-min, who played the protagonist in the film, said that “the outline (for sequel) has not been set yet, but I think I would be in it.”

Hwang, a fan of the “Alien” franchise, explored a possibility that “Veteran” would transform into a strong franchise here. “The reason I want to do this ‘Veteran’ series is that those who watch the film will age together. That’s fun,” Hwang said.

The popularity of Korea's latest hit movie "Veteran" has inspired the team who made it to produce a sequel.

The movie's director Ryoo Seung-wan and producer Filmmaker R&K were quoted in media reports that they have already agreed to make a sequel. They haven't yet decided the details of the forthcoming production, including whether the original film's main actor Hwang Jung-min will join the cast.

Ryoo is currently looking for material to include in the sequel and create another villain who must be more evil than Cho Tae-oh (played by Yoo Ah-in) in the original.

"The sequel will revolve around real social issues that many people will relate to," Ryoo was quoted as saying.

Filmmaker R&K's insider also said that the sequel will likely hit theaters within two to three years.

The original movie features tough and moral Seoul police officers fighting for social justice against a rebellious heir to a powerful conglomerate.

The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia has unveiled part of its lineup for next month’s 48th edition, and among the announcements were five Korean films hailing from the country’s commercial sector.

A major local newspaper ‘Pagina 12’ reviewed the film as “a superb harmony of the Eastern intellectual game of go and eye-catching action.”

On September 7th, the Cultural Council co-hosted a Korean cinema seminar with Directores Argentinos Cinematográifocs (DAC) for the filmmakers and distributors. It aimed to help the soft landing of Korean cinema in Latin America by stimulating copyrights sales and cooperation, through informing the superiority of Korean cinema industry and well made commercial films.

“The organizers worked hard to make this year’s festival a venue to introduce Korean cinema from several different approaches including press screening and seminars,” says LEE Jong-ryul, the president of the council. “We expect it to be a fruitful festival where all the three parties of film lovers, press and distributors could be happy and fall in love with Korean cinema.”

The Buenos Aires Korean Film Festival began in 2014 and it is the first of its kind to be hosted at a local commercial multiplex movie theater. Cinemark Palermo is among the most familiar and easily accessed movie theaters, which makes this festival more open and accessible to the public.

'Veteran’ likely to surpass ‘Assassination’

Crime-action film “Veteran” is expected to overtake the period flick “Assassination” in terms of ticket sales this week, according to KOBIS, a box-office tracking service of the Korean Film Council, Tuesday.

“Assassination” had sold a total of 12,652,000 tickets, with “Veteran” closely trailing behind with 12,542,000 tickets.

Film observers said the ranking will change this week, given that “Veteran” is now being shown on 622 screens with a 4.3 percent reservation rate, while “Assassination” is available on 358 screens with a 1.1 percent reservation rate.

The two films both set records last month by breaking the 10-million in ticket sales mark. “Assassination” had the advantage of being released two weeks ahead of rival “Veteran,” but the latter has narrowed the race, with just 109,586 moviegoers separating them.

South Korean Blockbuster 'Veteran' to Get U.S. Release

by Lee Hyo-won   THR

A special screening of the crime actioner will be held for LAPD officers before it hits local theaters.

Veteran, one of South Korea's highest grossing films of all time, will open across North American theaters on Sept. 18 following its international premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, its local distributor CJ Entertainment announced.

Before hitting screens across Boston, Chicago, New York, Seattle, Vancouver and Toronto, the action flick will be shown to Los Angeles Police Department officers and their families on Sept. 16. On Sept. 17, director Ryoo Seung-wan will take part in a press junket as well as a Q&A session with the audience invited to a preview screening.

The film is due to be shown across 46 screens in the North American region, which is significantly higher than the number of screens allotted to other recent CJ Entertainment titles, including The Admiral: Roaring Currents (30 screens) and Ode to My Father (38 screens).

Starring Korean A-listers Hwang Jung-min (Ode to My Father) and Yoo Ah-in (The Throne, Korea's entry for the 2016 foreign-language Oscar category), Veteran is about a cop facing off against a corrupt, sociopathic business mogul. “The film embodies Ryoo Seung-wan’s style as a writer-director, with humorous dialog and social commentaries,” said film critic Jeong Ji-ouk.

As of Thursday, Veteran ranks No. 2 in the Korean box office since opening here over a month ago on Aug. 5, and has earned $79.2 million according to the Korean Film Council's KOBIS database. In terms of admissions, by which local industry observers measure a film's performance, it has become one of the top 10 homegrown titles of all time with over 12 million admissions — or close to a fourth of Korea's population of 50 million.

CJ Entertainment America will handle the North American release. The company began directly distributing films in the U.S. in 2009 and is one of the largest distributors of Asian films in the region, handling around 20 to 24 titles per year.
